SEX AND CENSORSHIP

2016-06-16-1466081841-3492223-sMOVIESsmall.jpg

Although I believe censorship is a potential danger to the First Amendment’s protection of free speech, I find myself wistful for the bad old days of the Motion Picture Production Code of the 1930s and 1940s.

The Code was in response to Catholic groups that formed the Legion of Decency in 1933 because of movies like “Cleopatra” in which Claudette Colbert sat naked in a tub, “The Vamp” with half-dressed seductress Theda Bara, Mae West’s blatant personification of sex in “She Done Him Wrong,” and others.

Headed by Joseph Breen (1888-1965) the Code required that all films released after July 1, 1934 be subjected to the prohibition of:

Nudity
Illegal drugs
Profanity, including the words, God, Lord, Jesus, Christ, hell, damn
Sex between the white and black races
Ridicule of the clergy
The use of firearms
A woman selling her virtue
Rape or attempted rape
A man and woman in bed together
Lustful kissing
Sympathy for criminals
Technique of committing murder by whatever method
Theft, robbery, safe-cracking
Arson
Actual hangings or electrocutions as legal punishment for crime

You would think that all that censorship would cripple films, but it turns out that the opposite was true. Without being able to use sex to titillate and shock, writers, directors and producers were forced to be inventive, resulting in a renascence of imagination, creativity and quality in films and in matters of sex. In “Gone With The Wind,” Clark Gable carried Vivian Leigh up the stairs and Leigh was seen the next morning in bed smiling in obvious post-coitus pleasure. Imagining her hoop and layers of petticoats and pantaloons and skirts coming off one by one, the scene is sexier than today’s graphic intercourse. “It Happened One Night” showed Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in separate beds with a blanket hanging between them. With witty dialogue their only connection, the scene couldn’t have been sexier. In one of the greatest love stories on film, “Wuthering Heights,” Merle Oberon and Lawrence Olivier kept their clothes on all the way to the end with Kathy’s heartbreaking death, Heathcliff at her side.

But, in spite of that success, over the years Hollywood has managed to chip away at the Code until we have come full circle to the uncensored pre-Code time. There’s the smarmy sexualization of “family” sitcoms and the suggestive advertising using sex to sell. The fact is, the once-shocking Playboy magazine is now almost mainstream.

Soft- and hard-core porn blanket the internet, available with a click to dangerous sexual predators, children, and untold numbers of men like Anthony Weiner whose repressed erotic fantasies find sick expression online, destroying careers, reputations and families.

It’s as if the culture of Walt Disney, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Caroline Astor has become tacky. Four-letter words have lost their power, commonplace even to 8-year-olds on the playground. We communicate in texting language that is not language. Lives are on public display as social media provides anonymity and opportunity to those seduced into becoming exhibitionists. Creating an internet persona may offer temporary respite from life’s vicissitudes, but the real world waits in the wings where we can connect with actual voices, bodies and friends and remember what it is like to be human.

Duchess Kate Repeats One Of Her Old Outfit On Our Best-Dressed List

Our best-dressed list is always full of gorgeous designer dresses — which celebrities typically wear once. But this week, the Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) repeated a beautiful gown that she’s worn before.

The brunette beauty stepped out in a Jenny Packham number that she had already worn back in 2011 and all we have to say is, YES. Why not re-wear a gown as stunning as this?

Check out all the best-dressed stars of the week and let us know if you agree with our picks:

This Surprise Bread Is Making Sandwiches Great Again

Japanese baker and Instagrammer RAN of Konel Bread is single-handedly making sandwiches great again with her surprise bread creations. In her round loaf pans, she bakes circular breads with fun designs hidden inside. Some of her loaves are cheeky, like this specimen that makes you ask: is it an orange slice or a slice of bread?

Some of them are fashion-forward, getting fresh with animal prints.

And some of them are almost too adorable to eat. <3 SNOOPY <3

We’ve seen lots of cute bread in our life — like this amazing pugloaf — but these surprise breads are something truly special. The designs are created using ropes of dough layered together and the dyes are all-natural and vegetable-derived. Here’s one more example, just for good measure.

How Couples Can Live Well On $2,000 A Month In This Romantic European Locale

By Nazareen Heazle, InternationalLiving.com

Cosmopolitan cities, glorious sunshine, delicious cuisine, and low costs — as a retirement or second-home destination, Spain is hard to beat.

The southern province of Andalucia, particularly the area around the Costa del Sol, is the epitome of good-value, romantic Spanish living.

It has everything: long sandy beaches perfect for strolling on … romantic, white-washed hill towns cling to the Andalusian hillsides … a sunny climate where snow and even rain are a rarity … and a cost of living so affordable you’ll find it hard to believe you’re in a European country.

You’ll share a three-course meal with a friend for as little as $22, rent from $540 a month … All told a couple can live comfortably on $2,000 a month — and that includes the costs of exploring all the country has to offer.

Southern Spain is most famous for its beaches and resort towns. If you’re a beach lover, you’ll find plenty of options for beachside living. Marbella is the glitzy heart of this stretch of coastline, attracting tourists and the wealthy jet set from around the world.

Marbella’s Old Town, Marbella, Spain
It has restaurants offering cuisines from around the world, lots of boutique clothing stores, and a pretty Old Town that’s a pleasure to ramble through. Despite its glamorous reputation, Marbella is still affordable. You can buy two-bedroom apartments, about a 10-minute walk from the town’s popular beach, from $157,000. If you’d prefer to be closer to the sea, you’ll pay around $225,000.

Although I love the beaches of the Costa del Sol, it’s the area’s mountain towns that really charm me.

Just a short drive from the coast, hidden among the green hills, are some of Spain’s most enchanting and affordable towns. My favorite was Mijas. This “white town” (pueblo blanco) sits on a hilltop 20 minutes from Malaga. Founded in the second century, it’s held onto its traditional Andalusian atmosphere: narrow cobblestone streets, crammed on either side by whitewashed stone buildings. Many are boutiques, local artisan jewelry stores, and expat-owned chocolate shops.

The cherry on top of this cake is the cost of real estate. I found a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with a terrace, a short walk from the town center for just $92,400. Rentals are equally good value. A two-bedroom apartment in the heart of the village can be yours for $565 a month.

Pueblo of Torrox, Spain
Another of this area’s mountain towns that stole my heart is the peaceful pueblo of Torrox. It’s the kind of place where time stands still. The quaint village square, Plaza de la Constitucíon, is lined with orange trees, their faint scent filling the air. Here locals sit in cafes or on one of the many wooden benches to watch the world go by. The town hall stands proudly at the end of the square, its green shutters a colorful contrast to its brilliant white walls. Life in Torrox is easy and serene.

The price of a new home in Torrox will also be easy on your pocketbook. Currently a three-bedroom apartment, right near the main square, with its own terrace is on offer for just $107,700. A townhouse with three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 1,400 square feet of living space can be rented on a long-term basis for $540 a month.

As I’ve mentioned, real estate isn’t the only thing in southern Spain that’s good value. The food, in particular, is great value. My favorite dining experience was a three-course meal of crispy deep-fried Camembert, a Mediterranean fish bisque, followed by warm chocolate cake smothered in cream for just $16.

The perfect end to a serene day in southern Spain.

Lindsay Lohan Turns Roving EU Reporter On Social Media

As the world comes to terms with the United Kingdom’s decision Thursday to leave the European Union, spare a thought for Lindsay Lohan.

The London resident’s Twitter and Instagram accounts featured a series of posts backing Britain to remain in the EU, along with live tweets on the referendum results.

The “Mean Girls” star’s running commentary began with this bizarre video, where she focused on a Chanel bag before panning over to the BBC’s coverage of the vote:

“#besmart pay attention and work hard to buy @chanelofficial #remain where’s Sunderland? Does Sarah Palin live there? Lol,” she wrote.

Lohan then responded to an article The Independent ran on how the pound was plummeting following the city of Sunderland’s overwhelming decision to vote “leave.”

There then followed a short, sharp message for small business owners:

She briefly pondered on what former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher would have thought of Brexit:

Lohan’s official account rejected speculation that she had been hacked:

She then had some harsh words for The Daily Mail newspaper:

The stream of consciousness went on:

And on:

And on, with a personal thank-you note to the people of Fife, in Scotland, for voting to remain in the EU.

Lohan wrapped up her coverage by 4:15 a.m. Friday with this Instagram post — featuring the hashtag #remain and an emoji of praying hands.

We don’t know what prompted Lohan to cover the results in her own unique way. But we suspect she awoke to news of the result devastated that her squad lost. So go easy on her.

Even President Obama Tells J.R. Smith To Put On A Shirt

When the leader of the free world tells you to put on a shirt, it’s time to put on a shirt. OK, J.R. Smith?

The Cleveland Cavaliers player, who has turned his team’s NBA Finals title celebration into a topless romp at parties and even the victory parade, got an executive order to add clothing on Thursday.

President Barack Obama couldn’t resist raising the issue when he made a congratulatory phone call to Cavs Coach Tyronn Lue. “Tell J.R. and everybody to put on a shirt,” Obama said. “You can’t be just walking around without a shirt. … Now Shumpert’s taking off his shirt, Kyrie’s taking off his shirt. Come on, man.”

Smith was actually spotted fully clothed on Thursday, For The Win noted. So that’s one less worry for our nation’s commander in chief.

Here’s a longer clip of the conversation.

And if you haven’t had enough of Smith stripped to the waist, here’s an ESPN highlight reel of his shirtless moments since the Cavaliers took Game 7 over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday:

Pretty sure J.R. Smith hasn’t worn a shirt since Sunday.
