17 Rules For Love And Marriage, According To Donald Trump

Thrice-married Donald Trump may not be the best person to dole out marital advice — or any advice, for that matter — but that hasn’t stopped him from giving it through the years.

The Republican presidential candidate and “traditional marriage” advocate has been married to third wife Melania Knauss since 2005. His first marriage to Ivana Zelnickova lasted from 1977 to 1992, reportedly ending in a $25 million settlement for Ivana. He was married to second wife Marla Maples from 1993 to 1999.

Below, some of the most questionable things Trump has ever said about marital bliss in his books and in interviews.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

What's At Stake

Anton, an engineering student, speaking to delegates in Yalta

June 23, 2016

In the historic port city of Yalta, located on the Crimean Peninsula, we visited the site where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin, in February of 1945, concluded negotiations ending World War II.

These leaders and their top advisors were also present at the creation of the United Nations and other instruments of international negotiation and non-military cooperation. Tragically, the creation of the “Cold War” was underway soon after. Reviving tensions between the United States and Russia make it seem as though the Cold War might not have ended.

We also met with groups of young adults, teachers, and veterans of foreign wars. At each meeting, participants readily agreed that new peace agreements are needed.

Olga, a tour guide, told me that she was fairly sure most young people here in Yalta would know what NATO is, what the acronym stands for, and they would know about recent NATO developments. Our delegation has been wondering how to cope with a quite different reality in the U.S., where many people may be poorly informed about NATO and would know even less about the Anti -Ballistic Missile treaty that the U.S. more or less tore up in 2001.

The Federation of American Scientists, in its 2016 inventory of nuclear forces, states that approximately 93 percent of all nuclear warheads are owned by Russia and the United States who each have roughly 4,500-4,700 warheads in their military stockpiles.

Konstatin, a veteran from the USSR war in Afghanistan, now a grandfather, spoke to us about Yalta’s history during World War II. “Many people perished here,” he said. “More than a million perished during WWII. This tourist resort was founded from the bones of people killed in the war.” Some 22 million Russians overall died during World War II, most of them civilians. Konstatin urged all of us to find ways for avoiding further war, and he spoke about how funds spent on weapons are crucially needed to help heal children afflicted by disease or hunger.

Julia, a University student who wants to become an interpreter working with diplomats, said that she is glad and grateful never to have lived through a war.” I always want to choose words instead of weapons,” Julia said.

We asked university students what they thought of prospects for abolition of nuclear weapons. Anton, who studies engineering, told us that he believes “the youth of different countries would like to bridge the gap and work out ways to unite people.” His words are extremely important now, as Russia and the U.S., possessing such huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons, engage in intensifying conflict. “All of us should soften the geopolitical relations between our countries,” Anton continued, “and try to get together on the same level, on the same ground. The idea of this future should be attractive to everyone and enable us to solve ecological problems. And if we all put efforts into reaching this idea of development and creativity, in the future, then the nuclear abolition will be something we can accomplish”

In 1954 the Soviet government transferred this largely Russian-speaking area from Russia to the Ukraine. In 2014, after Ukraine’s elected president was ousted and its new government formed in part by avowed neo-Nazis, Russia occupied the Crimea and after overwhelmingly winning an uncomfortably hasty vote, annexed it or “reunited” the Crimean peninsula with Russia, depending on who describes the history. The Ukraine ouster, it is widely believed here and in much of the world outside the United States, is considered to have been engineered by the United States and NATO. What plays in the U.S. as Russian aggression is seen by many here as a response to antidemocratic NATO interference along the Russian border.

It can be credibly argued that at its creation NATO’s mission was essentially defensive. Stalin was a terrifying dictator, suffering from increasing psychosis, with a long history of betraying even those who seemed to be his closest allies. Yet, as one Russian World War II veteran noted, the Russians had not tried to take over other countries far from their borders. They actually had been very cautious and conservative about extending the boundaries or reach of the Soviet empire by military force, and after World War II Russia needed to focus on rebuilding the internal Soviet economy and society.

The continuously assertive military posturing of NATO undermines and conflicts with the mission and development of instruments for international negotiation and constructive cooperation. Among the most striking examples in recent years are:

i) the decision to expand NATO into eastern and southern Europe by accepting the membership or candidacy of countries as far south as Georgia;

ii) the 2001 decision by George Bush to abrogate the U.S. – Russian Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems treaty and to build a so-called ballistic missile shield system in East European countries, allegedly intended to protect against prospective Iranian missile launches directed toward Europe;

iii) the 2001 to the present decisions by the U.S. and NATO to invade Afghanistan and to establish long term military bases there, anchoring a military presence in the center of Central Asia.

New conflicts around the Ukraine are still brewing.

Milan Rai, writing for Peace News, helps put this conflict in context:

“Since Vladimir Putin’s first ascendancy to the Russian presidency in 2000, the Russian state has used its armed forces against other countries twice: against Georgia, in 2008; and now against Ukraine…

In the same time period, the US has used its armed forces in a criminal fashion against a number of countries, including: Afghanistan (2001-present); https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/category/projects/drones/drones-yemen/Yemen (drone attacks, 2002-present); Iraq (2003-present); Pakistan (drone attacks, 2004-present); Libya (2011); Somalia (2011-present)….

The western powers are in no position to lecture Putin, whose actions in Crimea look like a Gandhian direct action when compared to the normal US-UK mode of operation. From 28 February to 18 March, Russian forces captured over a dozen Ukrainian bases or military posts without the loss of a single life. Compare this to the US use of tank-mounted ploughs to bury alive perhaps thousands of Iraqi conscripts in desert trenches during the opening moves of the 1991 invasion of Iraq. (US colonel Lon Maggart, in charge of one of the brigades involved, estimated that between 80 and 250 Iraqis had been buried alive.)

When one thinks of the number of deaths caused by US-UK aggression since 2000, including the grim ongoing tragedy of the Iraqi civil war, it is difficult to listen to the wave of western outrage.”

“This is not to deny that Putin has presided over a repressive administration,” Mil continues, noting that Putin has also carried out atrocities, particularly the indiscriminate bombing of civilians in the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, which followed massacres and the enforced disappearance of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Chechens.”

I believe that the greatest threat to the long range peace and security of Europe and the United States is the reality that the military sectors of western governments and the military spending sectors of western economies are so huge and bloated, like incurable cancers, that they cannot give up on inventing military threats and advocating military solutions which powerfully undermine diplomatic efforts to secure peace.

I hope Anton’s ideas will echo in the U.S. and help steer his generation toward pursuit of new acutely needed agreements.

Improve Your E-Commerce Conversion Rates With These Simple Tips

For e-commerce websites, the fast road to increased revenue is reached by improving conversion rates. More visitors converting into sales is naturally going to increase net revenue and ultimately profits.

Through my online marketing consulting agency, I have analyzed e-commerce websites in almost every industry, and I’ve worked with the in-house teams at multiple brands to optimize, therefore improving, their conversion rates in an effort to drive more sales and revenue. Here are five tips you can implement that will help you greatly improve your conversion rates.

Convey trust with HTTPS, social proof and badges.

If a consumer doesn’t trust your website they aren’t going to feel comfortable taking out their wallet and entering in their credit card details, regardless of how good your deals and pricing is.

I can’t stress how important switching to “HTTPS” is. HTTPS stands for “Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure” and it’s the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your website and the visitors browser. A website that is using HTTPS means all the communications between your website and their browser is encrypted.

The cost for this typically runs between $100 and $200 per year, depending on the type of SSL (secure sockets layer) certificate you purchase. Personally, I suggest all my consulting clients use an extended validation certificate, which shows the secure green bar as well as the company name in most browsers. (If you want to see an example of an extended validation SSL, check out my company’s website)

You also want to display as much social proof as possible. You only have one chance to make a first impression, and highlighting media outlets and partners that your visitors will connect with will immediately instill trust. Here’s an example of some of the social proof I include on my website’s homepage:

Including badges of trust also build trust, which is needed if you want your visitors to feel comfortable placing an order through your website. The Better Business Bureau logo (if you are an accredited member) and logos that highlight the security of your website should be visible, like shown here:

Make your important buttons stand out by using attention grabbing colors.

The buttons you want your visitors to click on need to stand out. While some web designers like to create pages that have a very uniform feel when it comes to colors, you need to be very keen on what colors you use for your important buttons.

Tours4fun.com, an online discount tours and travel website, has performed extensive conversion optimization to find the right button size, location and color that results in the highest possible conversion rate. If you look at their page for Grand Canyon tours you will see that the “View Details” button similar in color to the prices. Why? The first thing visitors are looking at on a discount travel website are the prices. If they like the price, they gravitate toward the desired button because it’s similar in color.

Don’t be afraid to test multiple color variations for your buttons until you find a winner.

Reduce cart abandonment with an exit offer.

I’m a huge fan of exit offers that fire when a visitor is leaving the shopping cart before completing a purchase. Yes, some popups can be intrusive and annoying, but most website visitors will never return. So, for the sake of converting more of your abandoned cart visits into sales, you shouldn’t be worried about a few people getting ‘annoyed’ with your offer.

I see two types of abandoned cart exit offers: immediate offers like a discount code or free shipping offer, and then offers to join a newsletter for special offers in the future. The email offer is giving the visitor a reason to not make an immediate purchase. They may intent to come back at a later time, but most will not, and they will end up purchasing from elsewhere.

Place an exit offer in front of their face as they are leaving that they can’t pass up. A discount coupon code with a countdown timer creates a sense of urgency and will cause many of its recipients to complete their abandoned purchase. These are visitors that had the intention of leaving, so any increase in converting abandoning traffic is a win.

If you are a large company looking for a hands-free white glove service, check out Bounce Exchange (they handle my company’s exit traffic), but if you are on a tight budget and want more of a DIY solution, there are several options available, including Picreel, Optin Monster and Optimonk, to just name a few.

Make sure your user experience is flawless across all devices and browsers.

This is very simple: if your conversion path and checkout experience is flawed on a particular browser or device, you are essentially throwing money out the window. Constantly running your website through a browser testing program, especially after changes and updates are made to your website, should be a no-brainer, but I see many brands drop the ball.

There are many services, such as BrowserStack, that allow you to quickly test across every mobile and desktop browser. While these types of tests should be part of your routine, nothing beats real human testing. Feedback from real users is a great way to see what they like and dislike about your conversion path and check out process. You can have friends and family test in front of your and get live feedback, or you can poll your actual users by using surveys, either real-time or emailed.

Increased conversions result in increased revenue — so take the time to implement these simple tips and watch your e-commerce sales rise.

Investigation Underway After Video Shows Men Apparently Dumping Chemical Waste

A distressing video that appears to show several men dumping barrels of chemical waste — and claiming that their employers ordered them to do so — has led to an investigation by Nevada state officials.

In a statement Thursday, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection said it is carrying out tests on the soil located near Carson City, Nevada, after the explosive video surfaced on YouTube this week, garnering more than 1 million views. (The video was uploaded Tuesday, but in the clip itself, the men claim it was filmed on March 3 of this year.)

The men in the video say they’ve been forced to dump out the contents of the barrels for weeks or face being fired from their jobs. “God forgive me,” one of them says. “This feels wrong. This is wrong.”

Production Pattern & Foundry, a local business, has come forward as the company depicted in the video. Craig Banko, a spokesman for the company, told The Huffington Post that the men seen in the video are some of PPF’s current and former employees.

“It’s a disturbing video,” Banko said of the nearly two-minute clip.

“That it happened is pretty much indisputable,” Banko said. As far as what the men are actually dumping, though, he pointed out that it remains unknown.

“We are working with state and local agencies,” he said. “The results, unfortunately, take several days to be analyzed.”

Banko said the men’s apparent actions violate company protocol, and that their claims of being threatened with termination unless they carry out the dumping are unfounded.

“We are trying to get the validity of that, because there has to be a name associated with it so there will be two sides to the story,” he said.

He said one of the three men in the video is no longer with the company. As far as he knows, the former employee left for reasons unrelated to the video. The others, Banko said, still work for PPF.

Houghton International, a Pennsylvania-based company whose name appears on the barrels in the video, has also responded to the disturbing scene. Like PPF, Houghton says there are still many questions that won’t be answered until the investigation is complete.

“Although a Houghton drum is shown in the video, we are unable to determine whether any Houghton products were among the fluids being dumped or even contained in the drum with a Houghton label,” the company told HuffPost in a statement.

Houghton went on to defend its environmental practices, stating: “Houghton provides current Safety Data Sheets and labels for all our products. This documentation provides information on the safe handling, use and disposal of our products. We are always available to answer any customer questions.”

Banko acknowledged those data sheets and said PPF abides by them.

“You can’t be in business without following those,” he said.

Why Independence Day Is So Much Better Than Other Disaster Movies

Disaster movies are one and the same—we’re all just watching them to see the world come under attack and famous landmarks get destroyed. “Oh my god, did they just do that to the Golden Gate Bridge?” “Not the Sydney Opera House!” But there’s one disaster movie that’s better than them all: Independence Day.
