China’s OnePlus 3 Rumored To Feature Ads Baked Into System Apps

OP3_adsPicture this scenario: you launch the phone dialer app on your phone, but instead of being greeted with a pristine dialer screen, your screen is instead littered with banner ads for products, services, and restaurants. Wouldn’t that be annoying? If you think that it is, be thankful that you do not live in China.

According to reports, it seems that the OnePlus 3 handset in China has ads baked into the system apps on the phone. Users are claiming that the dialer interface has a “Live Services” feed which shows banners for all kinds of products and services, and to make it worse, it seems that these ads are outsourced meaning that OnePlus doesn’t even get to control what ads are displayed.

Now you’re probably wondering, “But I don’t live in China, this shouldn’t affect me, right?” For the most part you’re probably right and you can go ahead and buy the OnePlus 3 without any issues. However OnePlus did announce that they have plans to eventually merge its operating systems. Right now there is Oxygen OS which is for everywhere else but China, while in China OnePlus uses Hydrogen OS.

We can only hope that by merging the platforms that ads baked into system apps will not be a feature that is brought over.

Opera Claims That Its Browser Is A Better Battery Saver Than Microsoft’s

opera-powersaverRecently Microsoft tried to make Google look bad by releasing a video that seemed to “prove” that their Edge browser is better at managing battery life compared to Chrome. That being said, it is no secret that Google’s Chrome browser is a bit of a resource hog, but considering how it ties in with Google’s services that many people use, Chrome users have over the years learnt to deal with it.

However it seems that Opera isn’t content with letting Microsoft think that they have won the browser wars. The company has recently put out benchmark results that prove that despite Microsoft’s claims, its Opera browser actually beat out both the Edge and Chrome in terms of being better at utilizing battery.

This feature isn’t particularly new to Opera as it was earlier this month that its battery saving feature was rolled out to its users. The company even detailed how they went about their testing methods and also released a timelapse video to show the testing in action (check out Opera’s blog for the details). That being said, at the end of the day we guess it really depends on the user.

While battery is no doubt important, features are also important as well as usability, plus some users might be light users and might not even be able to tell the difference, but if you’re looking at min/maxing battery life, for now it looks like Opera could be in the lead.

Pantech Returns After 20 Months With The Sky IM-100 Smartphone

pantech sky im-100Pantech is a smartphone brand that isn’t exactly well-known in the US, although in the past the company has launched a couple of handsets here and there. However they are South Korea’s third largest smartphone maker and it seems that after some restructuring over the course of 20 months, the company has made a return to the smartphone scene with the Sky IM-100.

According to ZDNet, “100” in Korean is pronounced as “back” (or at least close enough), so IM-100 could be thought of as the company’s way of saying that “I am back.” Now as you can see in the photo above, the IM-100 is a pretty stylish-looking handset. It sports a unique jog wheel on the side of the handset which according to Pantech, will allow users greater control over features like volume, versus the more traditional rockers you would find on most smartphones these days.

It can also be used to quickly scroll through pictures and videos. There is even an accompanying accessory called the Stone (pictured above) which acts as a Bluetooth speaker and a wireless charger for the phone. Unfortunately in terms of hardware, this isn’t exactly a high-end phone. It packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset with 2GB of RAM and a 3,000mAh battery.

The Pantech Sky IM-100 is priced at $380 which is rather pricey given that it isn’t exactly a very feature-rich phone. No word on whether Pantech plans on bringing the phone stateside, so we wouldn’t get our hopes up until the company announces otherwise.

OnePlus Co-Founder Defends The OnePlus 3’s Display

oneplus_3_002The OnePlus 3 is an affordable handset and presumably one of the reasons it is affordable because in terms of its display, the handset is still relying on the Full HD resolution versus QHD that we’re seeing in flagship smartphones these days. Unfortunately it also serves as a point of contention when it comes to reviews of the phone.

However enough is enough because the company’s co-founder Carl Pei has since taken to Reddit to defend (and to rant) the company’s decision of going with a Full HD resolution instead of QHD, which is what many had expected and hoped the company would do. According to Pei, “Do you think the price delta between a 2K AMOLED and a 1080p AMOLED is huge? It’s a product decision, and spec by spec is not how to judge a product.”

Prior to this, Pei also had to explain what Optic OLED meant, and he also defended the reason why they used it and not something else like sRGB. “The vast majority of our users, and reviewers love Optic AMOLED. It is NOT tuned to sRGB, and was never meant to be. sRGB tuning is a niche requirement and is not the right choice for the vast majority of smartphone users. Why do you think it’s hidden under developer settings on the 6P? For those who need it, we’ve taken note, and have added it to the next OTA.”

Now whether or not you take Pei’s word for it is entirely up to you, but like we said, the OnePlus 3 packs some of the latest hardware specs available for smartphones today, save for its display, and if you’re the type that can truly tell the difference between Full HD and QHD at a glance, then maybe the OnePlus 3 might not be the phone for you.

Trademark Hints That The Nintendo NX Could Use Cartridges

zelda breath of the wild 3A patent filing from last year seemed to suggest that the upcoming Nintendo NX won’t have an optical drive. However if you thought that this meant that the console would digital-only, think again. Instead we have been hearing rumors that the Nintendo NX could actually be going back to the good old days of cartridges.

Now it seems that there is more evidence that this could be the case. According to a recent trademark filing for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it reads, “Downloadable electronic game programs; downloadable electronic video game software; electronic game programs; electronic game software; video game cartridges; video game discs; video game memory cards; video game programs; video game software”.

Note that it says “video game cartridges” in the filing alongside video game discs and memory cards. Now it is entirely possible that Nintendo is simply covering their bases when it comes to the distribution of their games. With the Wii U accepting discs, we guess the “game discs” portion is probably for the Wii U.

However what’s interesting is the mention of cartridges and memory cards which hints at potential ways NX games could be distributed. In any case perhaps we shouldn’t get too excited yet since nothing about the NX has been confirmed yet, but with details expected this coming fall, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Solar Plane Lands In Spain After Historic Atlantic Crossing

SEVILLE, Spain (Reuters) — An airplane powered solely by the sun landed safely in Seville in Spain early on Thursday after an almost three-day flight across the Atlantic from New York in one of the longest legs of the first ever fuel-less flight around the world.

The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 touched down shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time in Seville after leaving John F. Kennedy International Airport about 2.30 a.m. ET on Jun. 20.

The flight of just over 71 hours was the 15th leg of the round-the-world journey by the plane piloted in turns by Swiss aviators Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg.

“Oh-la-la, absolutely perfect,” Piccard said after landing, thanking his engineering crew for their efforts.

With a cruising speed of around 70 kilometers an hour (43 miles per hour), similar to an average car, the plane has more than 17,0000 solar cells built in to wings with a span bigger than that of a Boeing 747.

Standout Strawberry Shortcake Recipes, From The Classic To New Twists

Strawberry shortcake is one of America’s favorite summertime desserts, and it’s easy to understand why. It has all the right components of a truly great recipe: fresh summer berries (a food everyone must experience in life), biscuits or shortcake (two champions of baking), and whipped cream. Lots of whipped cream.

The strawberry shortcake is put together in a great messy stack that gives us just the excuse we need to dig in with no reservations. It’s basically the sweet representation of what summer freedom is all about. The classic strawberry shortcake couldn’t disappoint even the greediest of sugar freaks, and then there are twists on the classic that are sometimes even more amazing. We have both of those options for you in the recipes below.

Why You Shouldn't Rely On BMI To Assess Your Health

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Move over BMI: It’s time for waist circumference to shine.

Since the 19th century, the body mass index scale, or BMI, has been the most reliable way to calculate a healthy body weight. The calculations categorize people into levels of normal weight, underweight, overweight, or obese depending on their weight to height proportions.

However, because BMI cannot distinguish between body fat and lean tissue, this measurement is not the most accurate way to assess your health in relation to your body weight.

For example, a professional football player who is 6 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds would be considered “obese” according to the BMI scale. But as an NFL athlete, most of that weight comes from lean tissue, not unhealthy body fat. In this case, BMI wrongly categorizes the player as “unhealthy” because muscle isn’t distinguished from fat.

The second problem with BMI is the fact that the measurement cannot tell us where the fat in our bodies is located. Fat around our belly is more dangerous than fat around arms and legs, because belly fat is linked to greater risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

As The Today Show segment above notes, having the same BMI as someone else does not mean that you are at equal risk for the same things. Two people could have the same BMI, but completely different body shapes and body fat percentages. This single metric wouldn’t tell either very much about their disease risks.

Instead of relying on BMI, it would be more beneficial to rely on waist circumference to assess health risks. By measuring waist circumference, you are actually measuring the amount of body fat around your waist that poses more risk than the fat around your arms or legs.

Your waistline, which should measure no more than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women, is a more accurate screening tool than BMI when it comes to determining whether you are at risk for developing obesity-related conditions.

Congresswoman Fights For Gun Control Because She Almost Lost Her Life To Gun Violence

House Democrats occupied the chamber floor Thursday morning in an hourslong sit-in to demand action on gun control. Among them was Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), a woman who has experienced gun violence firsthand.

“I lived in a house with a man that should not have had a gun,” she said in a chilling speech met with resounding applause. “I know what it’s like to see a gun pointed at you and wonder if you are going to live. I know what it’s like to hide in a closet and pray to God, ‘Do not let anything happen to me.'”

Dingell has spoken openly before about her history with domestic violence and proposed legislation last July to prevent abusers from owning firearms.

It’s illegal for those convicted of domestic assault to own or buy a gun. The law reflects current research that abusers who have access to guns are five times more likely to kill their victims. However, the law doesn’t apply to those who are awaiting conviction– even if they have a restraining order. It also doesn’t apply to stalkers.
