Pleurobot Acts Just Like a Real Salamander

One of the latest amazing robots to come out of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is based on a Salamander. It can mimic the way a salamander moves, on land or in the water. It goes by the name of Pleurobot (named after the species Pleurodeles waltl). It was designed by studying x-ray videos showing real salamanders walking and swimming.

He’s pretty cute for a robot, and has the most realistic movements of any amphibian bot so far. They have built others. This is also the first one that’s “accurately based on the 3D motion of the animal’s skeleton.” Pleurobot has 3D-printed bones, motorized joints and an electronic circuitry that is basically a synthetic central nervous system.

One difference is that it has fewer vertebrae than a real salamander. This was intentional, in order to get the machine’s movements to look as authentic and natural as possible. If you wonder why researchers would spend time building a robot salamander, there’s a good underlying cause. This robot will help the team better understand vertebrate locomotion, which could in turn lead to better neuroprosthetic devices for amputees and paraplegic patients.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Is Writing A Book

satya nadella
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been with the Redmond company for a very long time, and it has only been a couple of years since he was tapped as the third CEO this multi-billion dollar corporation has ever had. It goes without saying that his job is not an easy one and I’m sure we can all learn a thing or two from his experiences, which is why many of us will be glad to hear that Satya Nadella is writing a book called Hit Refresh.

Hit Refresh will focus on Nadella’s life, his time at Microsoft, and how he sees technology shaping the future. The book is going to be published by Harper and is expected to be released by fall 2017.

This is the first book that Nadella has written and it appears that he doesn’t want it to be just another book from a business leader. Nadella’s book is going to be released through Harper Business and he intends to give away all of the earnings from Hit Refresh to Microsoft Philanthropies.

He points out that this book is not a memoir and it’s also not a “how to succeed” book, it’s more about transformation, and we might get to read about how he’s transformed Microsoft ever since he took the reins from Steve Ballmer.

“Nadella explores how people, organizations, and societies can and must transform — hit refresh — in their persistent quest for new energy, new ideas, relevance and renewal,” reads the official description of this book from Harper.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to Microsoft Philanthropies that’s going to use the money from it to support nonprofits working on “public cloud for public good projects.”

Tesla Model 3 Performance Could Be Similar To Model S

tesla-model3
Telsa unveiled its first mass-market electric car – the Model 3 – earlier this year. It’s going to unveil this car in two parts and we saw the exterior and were told about some of its features in part one, part two will hopefully touch on its performance and other features when it takes place later this year. A new report suggests that the Tesla Model 3 performance could actually be quite similar to that of the considerably expensive Tesla Model S.

Electrek reports that the Tesla Model 3 is going to have a 300kW power inverter which means it’s going to have similar power and possibly similar 0-60 times as the expensive Model S.

It’s claimed that Tesla has tasked the same engineers who worked on the dual motor inverter architecture for the Model S to develop the motor for the Model 3 and that they were given a blank sheet to develop the power package for this car from the ground up, that includes the power semiconductor package.

An unnamed source claims that this strategy has worked for Tesla and that the inverter architecture for the Model 3 has a capacity of over 300kW which is comparable to the Model S’ RWD system despite the fact that the Model S can cost nearly $100,000 while the Model 3 is priced at $35,000 excluding federal and state subsidies.

None of this has been officially confirmed yet so take it with a grain of salt. Tesla is yet to confirm when it’s going to hold part two of the Model 3 unveiling, the car itself is going to hit the production line next year.

Samsung Releases Unlocked Galaxy S7 In The U.S.

Samsung-Galaxy-S7-vs-S7-edge-03_900
Customers in the United States can finally purchase an unlocked Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge directly from Samsung. The company is now selling its 2016 flagships unlocked in the United States. Previously, customers who wanted one had to rely on eBay sellers but it’s much easier to get one now and that too through a proper channel. The unlocked units are being sold directly through Samsung’s website.

The unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will work on both GSM and CDMA networks in the United States, meaning that they will place nice with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and also U.S. Cellular.

Customers can either purchase them from Samsung’s website or through Target, Best Buy, and Sam’s Club. The unlocked Galaxy S7 is available in black for $669.99 and the Galaxy S7 Edge is available in silver with a price tag of $769.99.

These variants have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, and all of the same specifications that you get on any other Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge variant so there is nothing fundamentally different about unlocked units.

Unlocked handsets are a great option for those who don’t want to be locked to a carrier or sign a two-year contract. Since the major carriers are moving away from two-year contracts, those who can afford it are likely to prefer putting down the full price for their handset in return for the convenience that an unlocked smartphone offers.
