Facebook Redesigned It ‘Like’ Social Plugin Button

redesigned like buttonIf you’ve noticed, you’ll realize that there are many sites (including ours) that have included Facebook “Like” buttons on their page. This is where users can “Like” the site’s Facebook page in general, or they can “Like” a particular post. In the past, the old design had the Facebook logo and the “Like” word written on it.

However it looks like that has changed because in an announcement by Facebook, they have revealed a redesigned social plugin button. As you can see in the photo above, it shows the new Like button that has done away with the Facebook logo. Instead we are greeted with the “thumb” and the word “Like”.

Given how people have come to associate the blue with Facebook, we guess there is no longer the need for the logo. Facebook also claims that because the thumbs up design is more recognizable, it has led to an increase in engagement, which is why they have instituted these changes.

“Our hypothesis was that more people would understand the thumbs up icon on the Like button, so we conducted qualitative and quantitative tests to measure them side-by-side. The results revealed an increase in engagement, so we are switching the Like button from the Facebook “f” logo to the thumbs up icon.”

Evernote Announces An Increase In Price for Plus & Premium Users

evernotewebclientRecently Evernote announced that a feature that was limited to its paying customers would now be available to all users for free. Sounds good, right? However we have to wonder if it was a part of a larger plan because Evernote has just announced that they will be hiking up the prices for both its Plus and Premium tiers.

They also announced that for their Basic users, the number of devices that can be shared has been limited to 2, meaning that if you have Evernote on your computer, tablet, and phone, you will have to eventually decide on one device that you’ll have to give Evernote up on. “Beginning today, the prices for our Plus and Premium tiers will change for new subscriptions, and access from Evernote Basic accounts will be limited to two devices.”

As for current customers, unfortunately you guys won’t be grandfathered in the old pricing plans. Evernote states that eventually the changes in prices will reach everyone, and that users will be notified by email when the changes are made. “Not everyone will be affected by a price change. If you are affected by a price change, you will be notified of the details by email in the next few weeks. This applies to both monthly and yearly renewals.”

Presumably those who already paid for the month/year will not be affected, but subsequent payments and renewals will be based on the new prices. Evernote Plus will now be priced at $3.99 a month and $34.99 a year. Premium will be priced at $7.99 a month and $69.99 a year.

IMAX Will Build A Theatre In Your Home For $400,000

imax private theatreWhen it comes to movies and going to the cinema, there are many moviegoers who are more than happy with the standard that is being offered. However there are some who swear by IMAX and will only watch movies in IMAX. If you fall into the latter camp, there is good news because you could have an IMAX theatre in your home one day.

According to a report from Bloomberg, IMAX has launched a new IMAX Private Theatre division with the goal of bringing the IMAX experience to your home. Unfortunately it will cost you at least $400,000 meaning that obviously it won’t be making its way into the homes of your average Joe, and that only the rich will have the means to pay for it.

Like we said, it will cost at least $400,000 which will be the “basic” Palais model that will come with dual 4K 2D/3D projectors, the IMAX sound system, a touchscreen remote, and seating that will accommodate 7-18 people. Unfortunately movies will not be provided, but you can add on $10,000 to get the set-top box that can play the latest IMAX movies, oh but rental isn’t included either, all of which we reckon will add up to a lot of money.

According to Robert Lister, Imax’s chief business, “It is the perfect marriage of a lot of trends we are seeing in entertainment consumption and our technology. People are demanding content, when they want it, where they want it, how they want it.” So, any takers?

AI Could Potentially Be Used To Identify Smuggled Cars

identify carsWith the number of things that are imported on a daily basis, it would not be humanly possible to check every single thing, which is why sometimes certain things slip through the cracks. Either that or smugglers have gotten smarter at hiding their illegal imports which could easily fool the human eye, which is where computers come in.

Over at the University College London, researchers have come up with an idea which will rely on AI to detect smuggled cars in shipping containers. Basically these containers will be put through the X-ray, but from the scans, the AI will be able to pick out and identify cars and even those that might have been cleverly hidden from human eyes.

So far it seems that the system is very, very adept at what it does and has successfully managed to identify with 100% accuracy with few false alarms. That being said, we reckon that further testing and study needs to be done on this before it can be implemented as a proper tool that can be used by customs, but like we said, the researchers are boasting a pretty high success rate which is rather encouraging.

For those interested in finding out more, you can check out the rest of the study here.

Mozilla Creates A Game To Teach Users About Encryption

codemoji Nowadays we are hearing the term “encryption” being tossed around a lot. For example recently it was discovered that Apple had shipped the latest beta of iOS 10 with an unencrypted kernel, and we’re sure some of you guys are wondering what the big deal is? Sure, some of you might have a rough idea of what encryption is, but if you wanted more in-depth knowledge, Mozilla is here to help.

Mozilla has recently launched a new web-based game called Codemoji. The idea behind the game is to teach/educate the public about encryption in a fun manner, instead of throwing walls of text at users, some of whom could be completely clueless about tech to begin with. According to the company, “Mozilla built Codemoji alongside our friends at TODO, the Turin, Italy-based design and creative agency. Our goal: To educate everyday Internet users about ciphers and the basics of encryption.”

So how does one “play” Codemoji? Basically the game simulates text messages. You type in the message you want and then send it to a friend. However the message won’t be sent as-is, instead it will be encrypted in the form of emojis to give users an idea of how encryption works, thus educating them in a way that is fun and that they are familiar with (we’re sure everyone has sent text messages before, right?).

According to Mark Surman, Mozilla’s Executive Director, “When more people understand how encryption works and why it’s important to them, more people can stand up for encryption when it matters most. This is crucial: Currently, encryption is being threatened around the world. From France to Australia to the UK, governments are proposing policies that would harm user security by weakening encryption. And in the U.S., the FBI recently asked Apple to undermine the security of its own products.”

Pinterest Will Soon Let You Shop For Items By Snapping A Photo

pinterest_shoppingThe difference between shopping on websites like Pinterest and Amazon is that the latter is more about recommending you items based on what you’ve shopped for in the past or products you’ve searched for before. Pinterest on the other hand feels like items have been handpicked, which we guess is true to a certain extent as users can share their Pins and items that they find interesting.

Now it seems that Pinterest is taking its shopping experience to the next level. Announced at an event held in San Francisco recently Pinterest revealed an upcoming feature (via Engadget) that basically allows users to shop for items by snapping a photo of it. For example if you’re in a hotel and you love the way the room is decorated, just snap a photo and you will be able to find similar items.

As you can see in the screenshot to the right, basically when you snap a photo of the object (or objects), Pinterest will attempt to identify said objects in the photo and will then search for items on its website that are identical (or as identical as it can be) to it. We suppose it could be less creepy if you were to approach a person to ask them where they got their bag from rather than sneakily trying to grab a photo.

However if you’re shy about approaching people or if they’re not helpful, this could come in handy.

Apple Patent Fuels Micro LED Rumors For 2017’s Apple Watch

apple micro ledLast week we heard a rumor that 2017’s Apple Watch could feature the use of micro LEDs. Given that the Apple watch is the first Apple product to adopt OLEDs, the move to micro LEDs does seem like a pretty big leap. However in 2014 Apple did acquire a company by the name of LuxVue that specializes in micro LEDs, so the rumors did not feel like a stretch.

Now thanks to a patent discovered by AppleInsider, it seems that the rumors of the Apple Watch using micro LEDs seems stronger than ever. The patent basically describes a way to stabilize LEDs and microchips on a carrier substrate, which in turn allows it to be transferred onto another substrate.

Interestingly enough, AppleInsider notes that one of the credit inventors of the patent is Andreas Bibl, who for those unfamiliar used to be the CEO at LuxVue before it was acquired by Apple. Bibl is also credited on another Apple patent that is related to micro LED. Now it should be pointed out that this patent in no way guarantees the features of the next-gen Apple Watch.

Obviously Apple is interested in the technology which is why the bought the company in the first place, but whether or not they will use the company’s products in future Apple devices is another story, but we suppose at least the interest is there.

Google Search Could Soon Let You Test Your Internet Speed

google internet speedWhile Google search is meant to point users in the direction of what they’re looking for, the recent years have shown that Google is more interested in making itself the one-stop shop for all your queries, whether it be to solve basic math problems, defining words, translating different languages, displaying song lyrics, and even diagnosing medical symptoms.

Now it seems that Google is testing out a way for users to test their internet speeds from the search results itself. As discovered by Dr. Pete Meyers, it seems that searching for “check internet speed” will be able to run the test, although he notes that the feature isn’t live at the moment as we have tried checking for it ourselves.

It is likely that Google is still testing out this feature which is why it isn’t live for all users yet, but assuming this is true, it looks like users looking to test their internet speeds will now have a more efficient way of doing so, unless you’ve already bookmarked speed testing websites. At the very least we guess users will have one more alternative tool to ensure the figures are more or less on the same page.

In any case we’ll keep an eye out for it and for when it goes live, but what do you guys think of this latest addition? Useful? Or are you already happy with current options like Fast.com and Speedtest.net?
