Nest App Updated With Apple Watch Support

nest camOne of the perks of having a “smart” and connected home is that unlike traditional household appliances, you can control these gadgets from afar, set schedules, and adjust them without having to get up from your bed. Now it looks like controlling Nest’s products have gotten much more convenient thanks to an update to its app.

The Nest app for iOS has been updated to include support for the Apple Watch. The update is pretty much as it suggests, which is that users will now be able to use the app and control their Nest devices from their Apple Watch, so if you’d rather not whip out your phone all the time, or if your phone is somewhere else charging, you can still have access to your devices.

While we wouldn’t exactly call this a groundbreaking feature, it’s small changes and improvements made to the quality of life that helps enhance the user experience. The update is now live via the iTunes App Store and it will work for all of Nest’s products, like the Nest Protect, Learning Thermostat, Nest Cam, and Dropcam.

In addition to support for the Apple Watch, the update to the app includes a password-protected live view from the camera, 1080p support for the Dropcam Pro, automatic video quality adjustments to ensure a steady and smooth stream, and more.

Kickstarter Has Managed To Create Over 300,000 Jobs

kickstarter-pledgeEvery now and then we cover projects launched on Kickstarter. The benefits to projects on Kickstarter is that instead of a group of people deciding whether or not a product is viable, it is left to the public whom the product will be sold to. Successfully funded projects are usually a sign that yes, this is something the people want.

This in turn has created a ton of amazing new products, like the Pebble smartwatch and the Oculus Rift. However a side effect of those new products is that it has also managed to create a ton of jobs. In a study (via Engadget) by a certain Professor Ethan Mollick of the University of Pennsylvania, it seems that Kickstarter has so far managed to create over 300,000 jobs.

According to Mollick, 283,000 those jobs are part-time jobs, while 29,600 are full time jobs. Kickstarter has also successfully led to the creation of 8,800 companies. Of course not all the companies created on Kickstarter have been successful. We have seen many projects fail to reach their funding goals.

We’ve also seen projects that sounded like dream projects and have had huge successes only to crash and burn once they have made it to the market. However we suppose at the end of the day, it does prove that Kickstarter is a pretty viable platform if you’re looking to launch a new career/product.

Waze Beta Now Reminds Parents Not To Leave Their Kids In The Car

waze_child_reminderIt’s unfortunate but sometimes you hear about it in the news where a parent forgot that their child is in the car and run off to do their errands, only to come back a few hours later and discover their child has died due to a heatstroke. Thankfully the folks at Waze want to do something about it, and in their latest beta they included a child reminder.

Basically the app will now come with a child reminder that when enabled, will prompt users that they have a child in the car. This prompt will appear once the driver has reached their destination. Of course it’s not always that you might travel with your kids, but we suppose leaving it on probably wouldn’t hurt.

We suppose while it is technically a child reminder, it could work for pets as we have also heard stories of how some pet owners have forgotten about their pets, or have left their pets in the car thinking that a few minutes probably wouldn’t hurt (it does), so hopefully with this new feature from Waze, parents and pet owners will be more aware and reminded that it’s not ok to leave your kids or pets in the car.

Xiaomi’s VR Headset Could Be Launched 1st August

xiaomi vrWhen it comes to smartphone OEMs launching VR headsets, Samsung was pretty much first to the market with the Gear VR. We also have Google’s Cardboard headset and earlier this year we saw LG and Huawei toss their names into the mix. In fact just last month, we heard rumors that Xiaomi could be next.

According to recent teaser images uploaded by Xiaomi, it seems that the company has somewhat “confirmed” that they are planning on launching a VR headset of their own. One of those teaser images is above which is written in Chinese, and according to the big white text in the middle, it says “I Am Xiaomi VR”.

We’re not sure what it means, but some have speculated it could mean that the company is planning a VR headset. There are also some who speculate that this could be a teaser for a Xiaomi handset that is Google Daydream compatible. Earlier this month Xiaomi did confirm their plans to launch a $600 smartphone, so could this be it?

In any case we will have to wait until the 1st of August which is when the details will be confirmed, so do check back with us this coming Monday for more information. In the meantime do you guys think that maybe there might be just a bit too many VR headsets in the market right now?

New Renders Of The Samsung Gear VR Have Surfaced

GearVR-2016-PressYesterday we reported that a blurry photo had surfaced which showed the alleged new Samsung Gear VR headset. It is a bit hard to tell from the photo exactly how the new Gear VR headset looks like, but now thanks to a report from Nowhereelse.fr, a newer and clearer rendering of the upcoming Gear VR headset has been revealed.

Just like we said before, there does not appear to be much difference in design from this version and the older version, with maybe some changes in the choice of color, but for the most part Samsung appears to have kept the form factor. However the report claims that we can expect USB-C support.

There are also some changes made to the dimension and its viewing angle, which according to publication will now measure 207mm x 122mm x 98.5mm, and its new field of view has expanded to 110 degrees, an increase from its predecessor which was at 96 degrees. Presumably the changes to the dimensions is to accommodate the upcoming Galaxy Note 7 which will be launched on the 2nd of August.

We’re not sure when the new Gear VR headset will be launched, but with the Note 7’s launch set for Tuesday, it is possible we’ll learn more then. Alternatively IFA is taking place this September so if we don’t learn more next week, we’ll find out more in the coming months, hopefully.

Twitch Lets Users Host Other Streams From Their Mobile Phones

The point of Twitch is so that you can broadcast your own content. However sometimes you’re not always available because you know, real life and stuff, which also means that during the time you’re not hosting, there is nothing going on in your channel. However that doesn’t have to be the case.

Twitch has announced a new feature called Mobile Host Mode (basically the mobile version of the feature that was launched a while ago) which basically lets users host another person’s stream on their channel from their phones. This means that when you’re away, you can choose to host someone else’s stream so that your channel won’t be empty, and at the same time you will be able to give other Twitch streamers some exposure.

For example if you are going on holiday, you could make a deal with another streamer to stream on your channel while you’re away, and you’ll return the favor when you’re back. Or if you have a friend just starting out, you could use your audience base to help give him/her more coverage. An advantage is also that the chat will not change.

This means that your audience and their current conversations will be retained, but the stream hasn’t, so your followers won’t have to join someone else’s channel just for certain bits of content. The feature is live for iOS users and is expected to roll out to Android users soon, so check it out if you haven’t already.
