Sardinia Journal: Shepherding

2016-08-25-1472103106-2548503-IMG_1576.JPGIf you want to meet a shepherd who also likes Edward Hopper because of his light, you will have to journey to Sardinia. At one point the Mediterranean was a smaller, though not less turbulent world, and the tradition of shepherding comes from ancient Palestine, amongst other places. The Adoration of the Shepherds of course derives from the Nativity. Talking about art and shepherding Giotto was a shepherd. Shepherds not only herd goats and sheep, but some like Salvatore Porcu, the shepherd from Bosa with the interest in Hopper, turn their spiritual leanings into the art of making cheese. For instance Pecorino is made from sheep’s milk. The process of making such cheeses is an ancient skill. Ricotta means twice cooked. Antonio Gramsci the Marxist philosopher who was born on Sardinia would probably have admired shepherd’s work since it’s one in which the worker experiences little of the alienation that results from division of labor and economy of scale, two principal tenets of capitalism that Marx indicted in his Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of l844. Come to Sardinia if you want a brief respite from the industrial revolution and the world of processed cheese.

Truck Driver Playing 'Pokemon Go' Kills Pedestrian In Japan, Police Say

TOKYO, Aug 25 (Reuters) – A Japanese truck driver playing Pokemon Go while driving hit two women, killing one and injuring the other, in Japan’s first death related to the Nintendo Co craze.

The driver said he had been distracted by the game after his arrest for negligent driving following the accident on Wednesday evening, a spokesman for the Tokushima prefectural police said.

“The driver is still in custody. No decision has been made yet on whether to proceed with a prosecution,” he added

A spokesman for Niantic, which developed Pokemon GO jointly with Nintendo affiliate Pokemon Company, said the company had added a pop-up to the Pokemon Go screen when it detected an increase in speed asking for confirmation the user was not driving.

He didn’t say whether the developer would take further steps to guard against accidents.

A spokesman for Nintendo offered condolences to the family of the dead woman.

“Pokemon Company and Niantic endeavor to create an environment where people can play the game safely and we will continue to do that,” he added when asked whether the company would take any new measures to guard against accidents.

The popularity of augmented-reality Pokemon Go around the world has generated crowds of people in parks and other public places as user search for monsters, but has also been blamed for injuries and robberies of distracted users.

Signs at parks and other places in Japan have asked users to avoid creating a nuisance.

Why The 25-Year Independence Anniversary Will Ring Hollow With Many Armenians

2016-08-25-1472095601-3402961-Yerevan_2012_February.JPG

Image: A winter view of Armenia’s capital of Yerevan. Author: Serouj Ourishian (Wikipedia)

In less than a month Armenia will mark the 25th anniversary of its independence.

It should be a time for joy.

But like many Armenians I will be thinking about what might have been, about the opportunities lost.

As our country approaches the September 21 anniversary date, it remains one of the poorest in the former Soviet Union.

Corruption is rampant, and there’s a huge gap between the rich and poor.

It’s no consolation that corruption and a wealth gap are the norm in every other country in the region.

Armenians don’t think much about what’s going on elsewhere. Their focus is their own survival.

It makes me sad that many Armenians — particularly older ones — long for the days of the Soviet Union.

Although most Soviet citizens had few material possessions, everyone who wasn’t a dissident was guaranteed a job, a roof over his head, enough to eat, electricity, water, gas, an education and medical care.

Now the guarantees are gone.

The government’s pension reform program of 2013 didn’t help our strapped pensioners. It simply made working people’s paychecks smaller by forcing them to make mandatory pension-system contributions.

The change led to street demonstrations, as did the government’s approval of transit-fee increases in 2013 and electricity-price increases in 2015.

During the Soviet era, all of Armenia’s brightest students could gain entry to a top university.

Now, money talks. Mediocre students can enter an elite university by paying bribes. And they can get through it without even having to attend class — also with bribes.

Money also talks in health care. If you need an operation or extensive treatment, you’d better have bribe money. Otherwise, you may not last long.

One of the major reasons why Armenia has been unable to do better since independence is that it is independent in name only.

In reality, it is still a Russian colony.

Russia provides Armenia with most of its gas. It also owns the pipeline system that delivers the gas across the country.

In addition, a Russian company owns Armenia’s largest electric utility. It was that company that informed the government in the summer of 2015 that it planned to raised its rates 17 percent — news that sparked nationwide protests.

Armenia had a great chance to reduce its economic dependence on Russia when, in the fall of 2013, it was ready to sign an association agreement with the European Union.

That agreement would have set it on a path toward full EU membership.

Armenians who knew anything about the world were eager to see their country join the EU because Europe is more prosperous than the former Soviet Union — and why not go with the best?

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been trying to recreate the Soviet Union, would have none of that.

He summoned Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to the Kremlin for talks.

No one except Putin, Sargsyan and a few insiders from both governments know exactly what was said.

But it was obvious that Putin gave Sargsyan an ultimatum.

Shortly after the discussion ended, Sargsyan announced that Armenia would be joining the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Community instead of the EU. The announcement was greeted with street demonstrations in Armenia — to no avail.

Not only is Russia maintaining its stranglehold on Armenia’s economy, but it’s also stationed troops in Armenia to insure that its vassal does not get out of line.

Putin hates the color revolutions that ushered in regime change in Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine. The last thing he wants is a liberal or even pro-Western political movement in Armenia, a country that Russia has subjugated for 300 years.

Ostensibly Russia’s army and air force bases are in Armenia to protect the country from external threats.

But Armenians know full well that if anything that resembled a color revolution began bubbling on their soil, and Armenian troops were unable to contain it, Russian troops would.

Given Russia’s continuing economic and military subjugation of Armenia, I will take no joy in marking Armenia’s 25th year of independence on September 21.

Because our country is not yet independent.

My overriding emotion on that day is likely to be sadness rather than joy — sadness for what might have been if the country had looked westward instead of remaining under Russia’s thumb.

To make a perfect family-friendly adventure film is a difficult task to achieve. You have to make it both entertaining and kid-friendly while including a positive, preferably inspirational message. Pup Star, the latest installment in the Air Bud series, succeeds in this goal with assistance of wonderful music and fantastic acting.

2016-08-25-1472097260-7946768-unnamed5.jpg

The adventurous feel of the movie appeals to the audience. This film has more than that to offer though with its comedy, positive messages and a slight bit of drama. There is even some romance to keep the viewer entertained and at the edge of their seat.
The story starts when a young puppy named Tiny goes on a dog singing show and does quite well. She receives a golden ticket from the judge which allows her to go straight to the finals. Everything changes when Tiny gets captured by animal control and must go on a huge adventure to get back to her owner and also to the competition finals.

2016-08-25-1472097299-1090705-unnamed6.jpg

Pup Star has a wonderful story line and great acting by Tom Everett Scott, Kaitlyn Maher and Jed Rees. The voice over cast for the animals matches their characters and feels quite authentic. They each make their characters truly come to life. But, the best part of this film is that the story which is entertaining, suitable for young kids and easy to follow.
My favorite scene is when we first meet Tiny. She gets on stage and starts singing. Her song is beautiful and serves to introduce the style and the feel of the film. I also love this scene because, although the talking dogs are animated, it looks very realistic, as if the dogs are actually talking.
Pup Star would appeal to families and younger kids. I recommend it for kids ages 4 to 13 and rate it 5 out of 5 stars for its excellent acting that truly makes the characters come alive, its realistic animation, beautiful music and its fantastic story.

Pup Star is a fun, fantastic, family-friendly film! It really is an amazing and inspiring movie with talking and singing dogs. I found myself cheering for the super talented Tiny and booing the bad guys, or should I say bad dogs!
The story is about Tiny, an adorable Yorkie pup who dreams of becoming the next Pup Star, which is a spinoff of the popular TV singing competition reality shows. The celebrity judges include Dog Gnarly, Blake Sheltie, Lady Paw Paw and of course, Simone Growl.

2016-08-25-1472097373-1209768-unnamed.png

Along Tiny’s journey, she is dog napped, meets colorful companions and becomes a more inspired singer with the help of Charlie, who is on his own journey. Tiny is encouraged by everyone she meets to keep going and not give up on her dreams. My favorite part is when Tiny sings. Kaitlyn Maher’s voice over and singing of Tiny is outstanding and all 13 original songs are so strong melodically that I found myself humming along to the song Blue Skies after watching it. Additionally, the various voice over and singing talents for all the other dogs are equally impressive.

The message of this film is never give up and follow your dreams. Tiny faces many challenges and tries her hardest to persevere and reconnect with her loving family.

The talking and singing dogs are created with amazing special effects. Their mouths move in perfect harmony with the words and lyrics. Also, I love the rich and emotional music composed by Brahm Wenger which draws you in from the get go. I recently had the privilege to interview the writer and producer of Pup Star, Anna McRoberts and she mentioned that this is the biggest cast of talking and singing dogs ever in one movie – 31 total. Bow Wow!!!

2016-08-25-1472097438-6878744-unnamed.jpg

Out of all the Air Bud Entertainment movies, this is my favorite. We can all relate to following our dreams no matter what they are and cheering for the underdog. I recommend this film to kids age 5 to 18 as well as anyone who loves dogs – kids and adults alike. With so many wonderful things to love about this family friendly film movie, I give it 5 out of 5 pup stars! I want to share one more thing: throughout this entire film, I actually forgot that dogs don’t really talk… or do they?

Afternoon Slump Got You Down? There’s A Nap For That

There’s a reason you, like clockwork, feel sluggish when 3 p.m. rolls around each day. Scientists call it the circadian dip, and it happens because our bodies regulate periods of wakefulness and sleepiness, the latter of which peaks for most adults during the nighttime hours of 2 and 4 a.m., and the daytime hours of 1 and 3 p.m.

The good news? There’s an easy solution. We’ve partnered with Sleep Number to get to the bottom of the #PowerOfSleep. Check out the video below to learn more.

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Just like diet and exercise, sleep is unique to each person and important for optimal health. Sleep Number® beds adjust on each side to your ideal level of firmness, comfort and support — your Sleep Number® setting. And when you add SleepIQ® technology you’ll know what to adjust for your best possible sleep.

Canon 5D Mark IV DSLR Announced

2016-08-25-1472099736-1742107-canon5d4.jpg
After way too long of a wait, we finally have a sequel from the famed Canon 5D Mark III. While Canon has enjoyed plenty of success with that camera, it certainly has felt a little old in recent months, especially in comparison to the newer mirrorless Sony A7RII and Nikon D810 DSLR. Thankfully, we have quite a few new things to get excited over in the Canon 5D Mark IV so let’s take a look.

You can Pre-order today: B&H Photo

Canon has upped the resolution to 30MP, less than the 36MP D810 and far less than the 42MP A7RII but still more than enough for most shooters and this should help them in low light results. Canon has struggled in their sensor technology so I remain skeptical that this new sensor will deliver the high dynamic range and crisp black levels of the competition. We have a similar 61pt AF system with 41 cross type points this time with High Density Reticular AF for better tracking, dual pixel autofocus which is great for video/live view, and larger coverage across the frame. Shooting speed also gets a small bump to 7fps and the camera now comes standard with Wifi, GPS, and NFC as well as USB 3.0.

At last we finally have 4k video though it comes with some strings attached. The format is mjpeg similar to the Canon 1DXII which is an aging format with massive file sizes with the advantage being super high bit rates of 500Mbps. Additionally, 4k video will yield a massive 1.7x crop factor for 1 to 1 pixel sampling. 1080p video at up to 60p will thankfully still have the h.264 option for more efficient recording. Video will be 4.2.2 8 bit in camera but unfortunately you will NOT be able to output 4k video over the HDMI output. An added touch screen will also simplify control in video and certainly help with controlling the dual pixel AF system which has been one of the best autofocus systems for video I have ever used. Don’t expect to see any video features here like focus peaking, zebras, and log recording as Canon is still keeping those exclusively for its video camera line.

Overall, the camera gets a nice bump and should be a worthy upgrade. That said, Canon is still hard at work setting strict limitations to its cameras seemly to protect other cameras in the market. This strategy is a polar opposite to Sony for example who threw almost every major professional feature in its consumer friendly Sony a6300 that costs under $1000. That said, the 5D Mark IV is set to be a major hit and I’m looking forward to getting it in my hands for a full review so stay tuned. The Canon 5D Mark IV is set to begin shipping in September at $3,499.
