It’s been said that party vendors ― DJs, venues, videographers and the like ― charge more for weddings than for other types of celebrations. But is that true?

“Today” show correspondent Jeff Rossen and producer Lindsey Bomnin went undercover to find out. They separately visited the same photographer, DJ and venue and requested quotes for a birthday party and wedding, respectively.

Who got a higher estimate? Watch the video above to find out.

Giant Ken Burns Fan Ron Johnson Once Tried To Defund PBS

WASHINGTON ― Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who last week said students would learn more from a Ken Burns documentary than from a teacher, once tried to defund PBS, the TV network that has aired the filmmaker’s work for decades.

Johnson joined an unsuccessful push to eliminate federal funding for public broadcasting in 2012, two years into his first term. He signed a letter authored by then-Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), calling on appropriations leaders to push legislation that would defund public broadcasting, including PBS.

We face many hard choices ahead, but defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting should be one of the easier decisions to make,” the letter stated. “We simply cannot afford to continue funding all of the programs that we have in the past.”

Burns, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose work includes “The Civil War” and “Jazz,” has produced many documentaries since 1981 that aired exclusively on PBS ― Public Broadcasting Service.

Watching Burns’ work, Johnson argued last week, is the way to break up the “higher education cartel.” Johnson’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on whether the senator still supports defunding PBS.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is the nonprofit overseer of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting, which includes PBS and NPR ― National Public Radio.

DeMint and Lamborn also introduced legislation in 2012 to defund PBS and NPR via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The bill went nowhere, but proponents did pass a measure requiring the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to research alternative funding sources for public broadcasting stations.

Here’s what that research concluded:

“Without the federal appropriation, the public broadcasting system as we know it will not survive. For $1.35 per American this service leverages additional operating revenue from a variety of sources in communities across the country. Compare this entrepreneurial public-private partnership to the almost total funding provided by other countries for their public broadcasting service—in Canada it is $22.48 per citizen, for Japan $58.86, for the United Kingdom $80.36, and for Denmark it is $101 per citizen.”

The debate reached a fever pitch in 2012, after then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he, too, supported defunding PBS, but had nothing against Big Bird.

If PBS lost its federal support, as Johnson wanted, Burns would need to find a new outlet for his work. That may not be difficult. But it may mean that fewer students would have access to his documentaries. Those whose families can’t afford cable TV might be out of luck.

Johnson is up for re-election. Polls show his challenger, former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who lost the seat to Johnson in 2010, ahead by roughly 10 points. (Only two polls have come out since July.)

Quiz: Is America Dating A Bad Boy?

In 1991, the movie Sleeping with the Enemy premiered. A psychological thriller about the “perfect couple” who live a different life within their own home, the film exposes the terror of living with a controlling, abusive spouse. I was in college when I saw it, and I remember thinking, “I would never let a man treat me that way. I’m too strong for that.”

Two years later, I entered a relationship that was, in many ways, the kind of relationship that made me walk on eggshells and fear. It didn’t start that way, however, and that’s the kicker. He was charming and handsome and fun, at first, gradually escalating the verbal and physical abuse once I was attached to him. Ten years later – and coincidentally, after four years of marriage, just like the characters in the movie – I got out. Luckily, he had found someone else and wasn’t interested in hunting me down.

America is being courted by this kind of dangerous, controlling man for the highest office in our country: the presidency. Some followers love his every move because it makes them feel better about their own lives and channels the anger that has been simmering under their skin. Others stubbornly pretend not to see. Or they hate the other candidate so much that they believe that he must be the better alternative.

Is Donald Trump the guy your mother warned you about? This short quiz may clear things up.

1. DOES HE TAKE CHARGE?

Your new paramour is charming, at first, making you laugh and impressing you with his ability to work the room. He’s strong and powerful, and you feel safe with him, because he takes charge and seems to know just what the people around you want to hear. It stirs them in a way you hadn’t imagined, and you feel proud. You can’t believe he picked you, out of all people, to bestow his gifts.

But then, you start to notice that he laughs a little louder than necessary, and you see his scowl when he turns away. He begins to tell you how to dress, or who to hang out with when you’re not with him. When he starts insulting you in public, you feel shame and guilt; you must surely deserve this. What did you do to push his buttons? He just speaks his mind and he has the right to say whatever he wants. Even when he’s belittling, disdaining, or encouraging violence.

See, that’s how it works. When we see someone for who they portray versus what they are, we miss the danger signs.

2. DOES HE PREY ON FEAR AND ANGER?

You see that some people leave the room when he enters, because he takes up all the air. Friends hint that maybe he’s taking over your life. One very close friend confronts you with an intervention and tries to get you to see that he’s unhealthy for you; he’s toxic.

And then, he punches you in the face. You’re blindsided, both literally and figuratively. You lick your wounds and hide the damage and pretend it never happened. You look the other way when he starts telling cruel jokes and you excuse his behavior because, well, you know how much he loves you. He has you so convinced of his worth that you can’t seem to walk out the door, even knowing that he is poison.

Very gradually, my ex’s negative comments started to chip at my view of myself. He said that I wasn’t really his type. He told me that he didn’t like what I wore. He disrespected my friends and my parents. I kept making excuses, even after he socked me in the left side of my jaw.

The problem is that once we enter this cycle, it’s hard to get out. Already, our children are displaying the effects of the cult of personality and acting out in ways that are, at best, unkind, and at worst, xenophobic and racist. The bruises have been under the surface, but they’re starting to look like a very visible black eye.

3. DOES HE TELL YOU THAT HE LOVES YOU, BUT…?

We loved to hate him as the man who said “You’re Fired!” every season on his reality show. We laughed at his antics when they didn’t affect us. He says “Let’s Make America Great Again!” but he doesn’t say how. Or for whom, in particular.

You might walk on eggshells and do everything you can do to placate him, because you remember how charming and funny he can be. Besides, he loves you. He says so all the time. He says no one can love you the way he does. He can make you better than ever, with his guidance, he tells you.
When you protest, he tells you that you’re too sensitive. You’re too “politically correct.” You’re weak and stupid. You believe him.

My ex made me feel important, at first. I felt so lucky. I fell in love with him and then I made the mistake of thinking that love could fix everything, including him.

****

Did you answer “yes” to any of these questions? Then yes, it’s time to get out of this relationship. This presidential campaign has preyed on fear and anger, caused the most resentful of the middle class to pick up the pitchforks to join the poking and prodding of the fabric of our country, ripping us to shreds. Donald Trump’s speeches, full of hate and violence, have turned our attention from what we can improve to the worst side of ourselves.

He stumps for freedom of speech, but only for him; in the meantime, he has banned various media outlets from his events.

He tells us we are too politically correct; and the white supremacists come out of the woodwork to cheer and laud him.

Trump cheated on his first wife, left the second one, and is on a third, while his party’s platform preaches about the “sanctity of marriage”; and he ridicules his opponent for salvaging her marriage when her husband’s indiscretions humiliated her.

He encourages his crowd to scream “Lock her up!” of his opponent; he insults military veterans and POWs. Women who are sexually harassed should just get a new job, he says. But he loves women, he reports. He loves them all the way under his thumb.

Just because he’s not screaming at you right now doesn’t mean that he won’t. Just in the last several months, he has painted the people of Mexico as rapists; female reporters as weak and stupid; a disabled man the butt of his jokes; and Muslim people as potential terrorists who should wear some kind of symbol on their person, harking back to the German fascists of WWII.

It’s time to break up with him, America. This is not the America we know. This is not the America we love. It’s not too late to turn away from the ugly, hateful, bleak vision of our country he wants us to see; we are better than this.

When I was finally free of my ex-husband, I could see the damage that had been done. I was bruised and battered from the inside out, but I started to see with my own eyes what I couldn’t see before: this man wasn’t good for me.

And Donald Trump isn’t good for us, either. He’s giving all of us a black eye.

NASA Wants To Make Space Habitats From Orbiting Rocket Fuel Tanks

The idea of re-purposing an (ideally) empty rocket fuel tank and turning it into a space habitat has been around for a long time, because it’s a really appealing idea. America’s first space station, Skylab
, was designed from a Saturn V rocket’s upper-stage fuel tank, albeit one that was never filled with fuel. Now NASA has selected a company to develop habitats made from used rocket fuel tanks.

Researchers suggest ancient round ‘tools’ were actually weapons

Ancient stone objects are often rudimentary in design and, due to their age and possible exposure to the elements, sometimes lacking in finer details. This can make it difficult to discern what exactly any particular discovery is, and few things are more ambiguous than simple stone spheres. Were previously discovered round hand-sized stones used as tools? Researchers have thought so, … Continue reading

The World’s Largest Aircraft Falls To The Ground

airlander-crash-2016We had mentioned the Airlander back in 2014 when it made the news for being the largest aircraft. This time, the Airlander 10 is back in your feed because it failed its second test-flight. After 20mn of flight, the 300-feet long aircraft from Hybrid Air Vehicle went nose down to the ground in a testing area north of London.

The good news is that no-one got hurt, and it’s one of the bright points of “air vehicles” because they don’t crash as hard (back in the days, they had been known to explode).

Airlander 10 is filled with 38,000 cubic meters of Helium gas. Although memories of the Hindenburg disaster may resurface, few people know about the USS Akron helium-filled US Navy airship destruction by a storm, causing the death of 73 people on board.

Since this is a test flight, it’s not completely surprising to see technical glitches either. At the moment, the Hybrid Air Vehicle don’t yet know what happened and have not commented on the specifics of this incident. The UK’s government has started an inquiry through its “air accident investigation” branch.

The Airlander 10 isn’t designed as a passenger aircraft but is thought to have the potential for communications or surveillance, two applications that require an aircraft capable of staying afloat for extended periods of time (~5 days) in a safe, and cost-efficient (and energy-efficient) way.

It could even be used for transport since it can carry a 10-ton payload. It is said that the military has been looking at its capabilities. It costs $33M to build, and its creators hope to start shipping some around the end of this decade.

Potentially Life-Supporting Planet Found Orbiting Nearest Star

An artist concept of the planet

An artistic concept of the planet

Recent scientific developments point to the existence of an Earth-size planet orbiting the closest star to the Sun: Proxima Centauri (4.2 light years, 26 Trillion miles).  The planet is at the right distance to its star to have liquid water, the essential element of life as we know it. This area which is not to close, but not too far from the sun is called the Goldilocks Zone.

Part of the Pale Red Dot initiative, scientists, have been observing the Proxima Centauri star in search of evidence of a planet. Because planets are usually tiny in relation to their star, and because the star tends to overwhelm any light-based sensors we have, it is very hard to actually “see” a planet.

There are several methods for detecting planets. One consists of looking at regular drops in the level of brightness of the star, which may indicate that something in orbit is passing in front of it. The other is to look at a wobble of the star, which would be caused by the gravity attraction between the star and the planet (the planet also pulls the star towards itself).

This wobbling motion of the star is probably induced by a nearby planet

This wobbling motion of the star is probably induced by a nearby planet

It is this gravity-induced wobbling that leads scientists to establish a “fingerprint” of a planet, saying that this was strong evidence that something estimated to have 1.3X the mass of Earth was orbiting this star. According to the readings, the planet would orbit around its star every 11.2 days.

This means that the planet is extremely close to its sun when compared to Earth. However, Proxima Centauri is also much dimmer than the Sun, so the Goldilocks Zone is located closer as well. Before you get too excited, it should be said that although the conditions on the planet should allow for liquid water to exist, there’s also a good chance that the short distance to the sun makes the planet’s surface very exposed to solar radiations (X-Rays, UVs…). It’s just hard to tell.

Also, it is unclear at the moment if the planet’s surface has half of it always oriented towards the sun, or if it has a rotation which would distribute the solar exposure more evenly. In short: we need more direct observations, although it will take a very long time for a human satellite to reach that location: an estimated 81,000 years with current technologies. Although space may become key to our survival at some point, this new discovery is only one (very) tiny step towards space colonization.

This Pic Proves Simone Biles Is A Mere Mortal After All

For two weeks Simone Biles took the Olympic stage and proved to the world she is not one of us.

Some might call her god-like ― since she can do things like this…

And this…

And this…

Did we mention she won five Olympic medals? And that four were gold? That would be the most gold medals won by a U.S. gymnast ever.

So we extend a hearty thank you to Aly Raisman for snapping this photo and posting it to Instagram earlier this week, proving that at the end of the day (and sometimes sooner), the amazing Simone Biles is a mere mortal, just like the rest of us:

Miss @simonebiles fell asleep before we took off. WHO’S THE GRANDMA NOW GUYS

A photo posted by Alexandra Raisman (@alyraisman) on Aug 22, 2016 at 5:36pm PDT

The photo shows Biles snoozing on the plane ride back from Rio de Janeiro “before we took off,” according to Raisman’s caption.

“WHO’S THE GRANDMA NOW GUYS,” Raisman added.

Science says catching those Zs are one of the smartest ways for Biles to spend her time after all that record breaking in Rio.

Sleep helps athletes recover physically after a hard workout or Olympic competition, Henri Tuomilehto, clinical director at Oivauni Sleep Clinics in Finland, previously told The Huffington Post.

“Most of muscle recovery happens during sleep ― not lying on the couch watching TV,” he said.

Research also shows sleep helps you manage stress, think clearly so you can make better decisions, focus, be more creative and better learn new things. And it brings a plethora of health benefits, like helping reduce your risk of heart disease and obesity.

What’s more, sleep experts say you can get some of those benefits from even just a 20-minute snooze. (Though it’s important to mention that napping doesn’t necessarily make up for a bad night’s sleep.)

A caveat: chances are most of us can’t sleep long enough to do this:
