Google Wi-Fi Assistant Expanded To All Nexus Smartphones

google-wi-fi-assistant
Google’s Wi-Fi Assistant is a feature that was previously exclusive to users of its Project Fi cell service. The feature lets a Nexus device automatically connect to countless open and free Wi-Fi hotspots in a bid to reduce cellular data use and provide better mobile data speeds. Google today confirmed that it’s expanding Wi-Fi Assistant to all Nexus smartphones and that the feature is no longer a Project Fi exclusive.

The Wi-Fi Assistant feature is now available to users with any Nexus smartphone, however, the feature is only supported in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, and Nordic countries. The feature will roll out to users in the markets mentioned above in the coming weeks.

Wi-Fi Assistant can be located in the handset’s Settings app, open it up and go to Networking to toggle this feature on and off. If a device is connected to an open and free Wi-Fi hotspot using this feature, users will see a small key in the upper corner of the device. The key icon is similar to Android’s VPN icon.

Users will have the option to disconnect from any particular network, all they need to do is tap on “forget” by long pressing on that network’s name in the Wi-Fi settings panel. Bear in mind that the Nexus smartphone needs to be running Android 5.1 Lollipop and up in order to access Wi-Fi Assistant.

Best Buy Will Demo Oculus Rift At 500 Stores Across The US

Oculus-Rift-5

Best Buy was one of the first retail partners that Oculus signed up to demonstrate its Rift virtual reality headset. It first started demoing the Rift back in May at select locations across the country but the retailer is now going all in. Best Buy is going to demo Oculus Rift headsets at 500 stores across the United States in time for the lucrative holiday season.

Bloomberg reports that Best Buy is going to have Oculus Rift headsets in 500 stores for the holiday season. The retailer sees virtual reality technology as a way to boost growth. It’s also running 200 demos for Sony’s PlayStation VR that’s due to be released in October. PS VR’s demos rotate between Best Buy locations in the country.

Oculus has already released its Rift headset so it’s available for purchase today. Customers who are impressed by the demo can instantly purchase one and that’s something that Best Buy will be counting on as it continues to build up the headset’s presence in its stores.

However, there’s also the issue of affordability. The headset costs $600 and that’s more than what a casual gamer will be willing to spend on the first-generation of a product. Most dedicated gamers will have purchased a unit already so it really comes down to the demos and their ability to convince people who have not yet experienced VR to spend $600 of their hard-earned money on the Oculus Rift at Best Buy.

SpaceX Building Facility To Refurbish Rockets

spacex_falcon_9
SpaceX has already demonstrated multiple times that it’s more than capable of landing its reusable Falcon 9 rocket back on Earth after it completes a mission in space. It’s the only private space company that has managed to successively land the rockets on a floating barge out at sea. SpaceX will eventually be refurbishing and relaunching these rockets, it’s now building facilities in Florida where rockets will be refurbished.

Port Canaveral chief John Murray has told Florida Today that SpaceX is planning to lease one building and construct a new second building at the port. SpaceX will be processing and refurbishing its Falcon rockets at this facility.

SpaceX is planning to lease a 52,000 square foot Spacehab building that previously belong to an aerospace company that’s now known as Astrotech Corporation.

“With SpaceX’s recent progress in recovering first stage Falcon 9 boosters, we’re looking to expand our facilities on the Space Coast to support rocket refurbishment,” confirmed SpaceX spokesman John Taylor.

From the looks of it, in the future SpaceX will continue to launch its rockets from Cape Canaveral, recover them at sea and then send them to the port where they will be retooled and readied for subsequent relaunching.

SpaceX is yet to relaunch any of the rockets that it has successfully recovered so far, it’s on track to try and make that happen by the end of this year.
