A High School Report Card

I just dropped my son off at soccer tryouts. He starts high school (yikes!) in less than two weeks.

We’ve been talking about and planning for this big day for some time now. He’s excited and nervous. So am I. And I think he might be getting a little tired of how much I remind him of the importance of his high school report card, that it’s an indicator of how he’s doing, and how it can impact his future.

Our nation got a report card recently, and the grades are alarming. For the first time, the federal government has produced a detailed look at what it is like to be a gay, lesbian and bisexual high school student today.

We all know that high school isn’t easy for anyone. But for LGBTQ youth, it can be nothing short of hell.

Released earlier this month, the groundbreaking report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed more than 15,000 American high school students unearthed some alarming data.

Among the findings: Lesbian, gay and bisexual high school students are significantly more likely to be bullied at school or online; be physically forced to have sex; or experience sexual and/or dating violence.

But that’s just the start. The report includes other statistics that the CDC’s Dr. Jonathan Mermin described to the New York Times as “heartbreaking.”

Among lesbian, gay and bisexual teens, more than 40 percent have seriously considered suicide, and nearly 30 percent have tried to kill themselves in the past year. Sixty percent reported feeling so sad or hopeless that they had stopped participating in usual activities. These teens are five times more likely than straight kids to use illegal drugs, and many of them skip school out of concern for their personal safety.

The report states that “while physical and sexual violence and bullying are serious health dangers on their own, a combination of complex factors can place young people at high risk for suicide, depression, addiction, poor academic performance, and other severe consequences. Data demonstrate that LGB students may be at substantial risk for these serious outcomes.” Outcomes driven by anti-LGBTQ bullying, harassment, and discrimination and ones that are preventable should we take the task of addressing homophobia, transphobia, and other prejudices as seriously as this crisis requires.

The results are not a complete picture, since several states opted out of asking questions related to sexual orientation, it did not include an option for teens to identify as transgender, and it did not include current dropouts, homeschooled teens or others not currently attending high school. Yet, we are still talking about a lot of kids: about 8 percent of the respondents identified as gay, lesbian and bisexual and that translates into an estimated 1.3 million gay, lesbian and bisexual high school students across our country.

While the survey does not yet ask about trans identities among high schoolers, existing data demonstrate that their situation is even worse. A 2012 study by the Human Rights Campaign found that 40 percent of trans and gender-expansive youth reported feeling frequently or often excluded by their peers and 37 percent said they were frequently or often verbally harassed. Today, trans students are all too often subjected to state-sanctioned discrimination with the adoption of anti-trans policies and laws that forbid transgender students from accessing facilities consistent with their gender identity.

There is a false perception of what life is like today for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer high schoolers in America. Yes, it is certainly better than it was for me 35 years ago in Nebraska, but every high school isn’t a great, or even safe, place for every student. Not every kid is alright.

This is something our community has known for a long time. Groups like GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), the True Colors Fund, and The Trevor Project have done incredible work in K-12 schools and among LGBTQ youth to combat stigma and improve the climate for LGBTQ students and young people. But no one can do it alone. There are still too many kids suffering at school; too many real faces behind these government statistics.

The reality is that for every inspiring news report we see about a lesbian or trans student elected homecoming queen, there are still too many experiencing sexual violence. For every heart warming story of the gay football team captain, there are still too many committing suicide. For every bisexual teenager who is out and proud and president of the student council, there are still countless others who feel so unsafe at their school that they don’t even show up. Too many fail and drop out. Too many turn to drugs or alcohol.

Supportive families are our front line of defense. So are inclusive schools and communities.

The Human Rights Campaign plays a role in helping families, schools and communities succeed. Through innovative training and direct consultation with schools, child welfare agencies and other service providers, HRC’s Children, Youth and Families Program creates welcoming, affirming and supportive environments for LGBTQ youth, as well as LGBTQ prospective parents and LGBTQ-led families. They’ve worked with the American Counseling Association to create online learning modules for counselors who work with LGBTQ young people

Our efforts focus on making an impact well before high school. For example, our Welcoming Schools program works to reduce stigma and bullying starting in the elementary grades.

Through our All Children – All Families project, we train child welfare workers to better and more appropriately support LGBTQ youth in out-of-home care. And our annual Time to Thrive conference gives youth-serving professionals the tools they need to promote LGBTQ youth well-being.

Policymakers have a big role as well. An important and impactful start is with the passage and implementation of local, state and federal anti-bullying policies and nondiscrimination protections. We must also acknowledge the impact of state-sanctioned bullying that LGBTQ youth face every day in states like North Carolina by their community leaders and representatives. We must hold elected officials and candidates who engage in toxic anti-LGBTQ rhetoric accountable. And we can all do our part to end stigma by reading up on how to talk to the kids in our lives about LGBTQ issues.

We tell our kids to work hard to improve their report cards. As a nation, it’s obvious we’ve got to do that, too. But it takes more than study. It takes action.

Tesla Just Unveiled The Fastest Car You Can Actually Buy

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Tesla Motors Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Tuesday the company will offer a larger upgraded battery pack for performance versions of its Model S and X vehicles that will extend range and allow for super fast acceleration.

The new 100 kilowatt hour battery pack means high end versions of the Model S sedan, called the P 100D, will be the world’s fastest accelerating car in production, the Silicon Valley automaker said.

“These are very profound milestones and I think will help convince people around the world that electric is the future,” said Musk on a conference call with journalists.

The new battery extends the range of performance versions of the new Model S beyond 300 miles (482.8 km), Tesla said. Musk said that if the weather is not too hot, a driver could travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles without recharging.
After rising 2.1 percent to $227.71 in afternoon trade, shares dipped from session highs to $224.87, up less than 1 percent.

News of the upgrade comes as the all-electric car maker lays the groundwork for a controversial buyout of SolarCity Corp , while it also prepares for next year’s launch of its high profile Model 3 mass-market vehicle.

SolarCity agreed to Tesla’s $2.6 billion offer to buy the solar panel installer earlier this month, clearing one obstacle in the way of Musk’s ambitious goal to create a carbon-free energy and transportation company.

Both companies are still trading below where they were when SolarCity’s approval for the deal was announced.

In May, Tesla said it was stepping up production plans for its upcoming Model 3 mass-market sedan and would build a total of 500,000 all-electric vehicles in 2018, two years ahead of schedule, but it warned that spending will ramp up as well.

Tesla earlier this month reported a steeper than expected quarterly loss on higher spending at its vehicle and battery factories.

HUFFPOST HILL – Obama Visits Disaster Area, Tells It To Stay The Hell Away From His Legacy

Russian hackers have breached the New York Times, giving intelligence officials in that country access to 14 unfinished style section pieces on people named Poppie. Bono once asked Hillary Clinton for help broadcasting to the International Space Station, really upending what we thought her private servers were capable of. And CNN livestreamed Mike Pence’s haircut, though that content will completely pale in comparison to next week’s Breitbart livestreaming of Steve Bannon being fit for a new skin suit. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016:

OBAMA BELATEDLY VISITS BATON ROUGE – Theodore Schleifer, Allie Malloy and Nick Valencia: “President Barack Obama toured flood-ravaged Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Tuesday, surveying wreckage that has also become a political football. ‘We are heartbroken by the loss of life,’ Obama said after seeing firsthand the damage in the state’s capital that has caused more than 106,000 residents and households to register for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. More than 60,000 homes were damaged, officials said, and 13 people were killed.” [CNN]

STEVE SCALISE THANKS TRUMP AND OBAMA: “Their presence contradicts Hillary Clinton’s unbelievable claim that her presence would be a ‘distraction’ from our recovery.”

CLINTON EMAILS SUGGEST FOUNDATION QUID PRO QUOLight quid pro quo, let’s say. Rosalind S. Helderman, Spencer S. Hsu and Tom Hamburger:  “A sports executive who was a major donor to the Clinton Foundation and whose firm paid Bill Clinton millions of dollars in consulting fees wanted help getting a visa for a British soccer player with a criminal past. The crown prince of Bahrain, whose government gave more than $50,000 to the Clintons’ charity and who participated in its glitzy annual conference, wanted a last-minute meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. U2 rocker and philanthropist Bono, also a regular at foundation events, wanted high-level help broadcasting a live link to the International Space Station during concerts. In each case, according to emails released Monday from Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state, the requests were directed to Clinton’s deputy chief of staff and confidante, Huma Abedin, who engaged with other top aides and sometimes Clinton herself about how to respond…The exchanges, among 725 pages of correspondence from Abedin disclosed as part of a lawsuit by the conservative group Judicial Watch, illustrate the way the Clintons’ international network of friends and donors was able to get access to Hillary Clinton and her inner circle during her tenure running the State Department.” [WaPo]

@AP: BREAKING: AP analysis: More than half those who met Clinton as Cabinet secretary gave money to Clinton Foundation.

‘FIGHT SONG’ IS TERRIBLE: WHY WON’T CROOKED HILLARY TELL THE TRUTH? – We never thought we’d find ourselves longong for “Born Free,” but here we are. Hunter Walker: “Before and after the Democratic nominee takes the stage at rallies, her campaign inevitably plays the 2015 pop hit ‘Fight Song’ by Rachel Platten. The catchy tune inspires hatred from some outsiders, but some Clinton campaign staffers insist they’ve grown to love it One aide referred requests for comment about the tune to campaign’s director of millennial media, Christopher Huntley, who suggested that it epitomizes Clinton’s values. ‘I actually love ‘Fight Song.’ It represents how Hillary Clinton will never give up, and she will do everything she can to make sure families to get ahead and stay ahead,’ Huntley said…’’Fight Song’ is an anthem. ‘Fight Song’ is a way of f***ing life,’ [another] staffer said. ‘It un-ironically brings me joy.’” [Yahoo News]

HuffPost Haircuts: Mike Pence (h/t: CNN, which literally livestreamed his goddamned haircut)

TRUMP LOSING SO BAD – Hillary Clinton is essentially tied with Donald Trump in red-tinted Missouri, according to a new poll.  Clinton garners 43 percent support to Trump’s 44 percent among likely Missouri voters in a Monmouth University poll that has a margin of error of 4.9 percent. While the survey is strikingly bad news for Trump ― Missouri went for the Republican in each of the past four presidential contests ― it’s just one survey. Others show Trump ahead, and HuffPost Pollster tracking shows the conspiracy theorist-in-chief maintaining his advantage in the state. [HuffPost]

BICKERING ‘BOUT BERNIE’S BONES – It’s getting in the way of wringing money out of people with ankle tattoos.  Edwards-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti: “Less than a week before its official launch on Wednesday, Bernie Sanders’ new political group is working its way through an internal war that led to the departure of digital director Kenneth Pennington and at least four others from a team of 15, and the return of presidential campaign manager Jeff Weaver as the group’s new president…People familiar with what occurred say that the board, which is chaired by the Vermont senator’s wife Jane, was growing increasingly concerned about campaign finance questions being raised over the last week. Their concern reached a breaking point, one person deeply involved with the Sanders world said, with a story last Friday from ABC News about how the group would handle the particular tax questions raised by having a senator so closely associated with a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization that has strict restrictions on its political work.” [Politico]

WHY CLINTON IS LAYING OFF THE ‘FLIP FLOPPER’ ATTACK – Plus, you know, her flip flops. Sam Stein: “[T]he main reason the Clinton camp has kept the ‘flip-flopper’ charge on the shelf is because their research shows that voters respond better to the idea that Trump’s motives are subconscious, rather than political. It was, the aide said, the difference between being opportunistic and being ‘unstable’ ― a word used by other Clinton officials in recent interviews to describe the GOP nominee. ‘The effectiveness is showing people who he is,’ explained Joel Benenson, Clinton’s chief strategist. ‘When you make bigoted and racist comments, attack war heroes, it shows your lack of character to the American people. And our job is to not let voters forget who this man is and how he has vilified so many different groups of people through this campaign. It is part of what makes him unfit and it is what are explaining in very simple terms.’” [HuffPost]

Bewildered billionaires: “An ABC News analysis of several of Mitt Romney’s top donors in 2012 revealed that they have so far declined to donate to Donald Trump’s campaign, joint victory fund, or super PACs backing him, instead shifting their contributions to congressional re-election campaigns. Hedge fund manager Paul Singer, an outspoken critic of Trump, donated $1 million to Restore Our Future, the super PAC that backed Romney in 2012, and $5 million this election cycle to Conservative Solutions, a super PAC supporting Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.” [ABC News]

WIKILEAKS REALLY GOING OFF THE RAILS – The organization is starting to feel a bit like the Stanford prison experiment of transparency groups. Raphael Satter and Maggie Michael:  WikiLeaks’ global crusade to expose government secrets is causing collateral damage to the privacy of hundreds of innocent people, including survivors of sexual abuse, sick children and the mentally ill, The Associated Press has found. In the past year alone, the radical transparency group has published medical files belonging to scores of ordinary citizens while many hundreds more have had sensitive family, financial or identity records posted to the web. In two particularly egregious cases, WikiLeaks named teenage rape victims. In a third case, the site published the name of a Saudi citizen arrested for being gay, an extraordinary move given that homosexuality is punishable by death in the ultraconservative Muslim kingdom. ‘They published everything: my phone, address, name, details,’ said a Saudi man who told AP he was bewildered that WikiLeaks had revealed the details of a paternity dispute with a former partner. ‘If the family of my wife saw this … Publishing personal stuff like that could destroy people.’” [AP]

RUSSIANS HACK NEW YORK TIMES – “President Putin, we have accessed Tom Friedman’s files, apparently Indian food vendors are the future.” Evan Perez and Shimon Prokupecz: “Hackers thought to be working for Russian intelligence have carried out a series of cyber breaches targeting reporters at the New York Times and other US news organizations, according to US officials briefed on the matter. The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.” [CNN]

FOX NEWS TERRIBLE, LAWSUIT ALLEDGES –  Michael Calderone: “Former Fox News host Andrea Tantaros claims in an explosive new lawsuit that disgraced ex-network chairman Roger Ailes sexually harassed her and that high-ranking executives fostered a newsroom culture in which abusive behavior flourished.  ‘Fox News masquerades as defender of traditional family values, but behind the scenes, it operates like a sex-fueled, Playboy Mansion-like cult, steeped in intimidation, indecency and misogyny,’ the suit reads. Ailes was ‘the primary culprit,’ according to the suit, but ‘his actions were condoned by his most senior lieutenants who engaged in a concerted effort to silence Tantaros by threats, humiliation, and retaliation.’ Tantaros’ suit is the second leveled against Ailes, but the first to name the network itself and several current executives as co-defendants ― recently promoted co-president Bill Shine, general counsel Dianne Brandi, media relations chief Irena Briganti and executive vice president Suzanne Scott.” [HuffPost]

CLINTON CAMPAIGN OPENING OFFICE IN UTAH – Still unclear how much of a presence the Trump campaign has in Ohio. Dennis Romboy: “Seeing a rare opportunity to turn Utah blue, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will open a campaign office Tuesday in Salt Lake City. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has opened paths for Clinton to win the 270 electoral votes to become president, and maybe one of those paths runs through Utah, said Addisu Demissie, national voter outreach and mobilization director for Hillary for America…Donald Trump holds a 12-point lead over Clinton in Utah, according to the most recent local poll. But Utahns haven’t exactly embraced the billionaire businessman. Another poll showed they believe Clinton will win the election. Earlier this year, NBC News moved Utah to “lean Republican,” meaning the state is considered a competitive battleground in the presidential race.” [Deseret News]

HOW ANTONIO WEISS BROKERED THE ONLY ECONOMIC POLICY CONGRESS MADE THIS YEAR – Laura Barron-Lopez: “In 2015, as talk began to circulate on Capitol Hill of crafting legislation to help Puerto Rico manage its billions in debt, a hedge fund creditor paid a visit to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew’s new special counselor. The creditor told Antonio Weiss, who would become the point person on the island’s fiscal crisis, that the Puerto Rico government should simply eliminate some waste and cut a certain number of jobs to pay back its debt. Don’t bet on Congress helping, the creditor said. A year ago, the idea of lawmakers lifting a finger to help the beleaguered commonwealth was indeed a pipe dream. But Weiss knew better. He told the creditor that history indicated otherwise. When Americans’ livelihoods are threatened, he said, Congress moves in. Puerto Rico is home to 3.5 million Americans. Earlier this summer, after a year of haggling and revising, Congress passed legislation allowing the commonwealth to restructure its $70 billion in debt under the supervision of an oversight board. The bill didn’t satisfy everyone, but it is nevertheless the only piece of major economic policy to pass Congress this year ― a sign of Treasury’s persistence in the face of incredible gridlock.” [HuffPost]

Do Mormons Worship Joseph Smith?

In church this Sunday, we sang the hymn “Praise to the Man” which contains these two phrase:

“Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven!”

and

“Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren.”

I felt acutely uncomfortable with the words and stopped singing it. The tune is rousing. The words were written by William W. Phelps, a contemporary with Joseph Smith, and who fell out with Joseph Smith, but later asked for forgiveness and to be accepted back into the church. When Joseph Smith was martyred at Carthage Jail in Illinois, he penned this poem to the prophet.

While I appreciate the feeling of those who loved Joseph Smith and who were devastated by his murder, the words of this song now seem to me to be akin to worship, which is not what modern Mormons feel for this prophet. We honor him and his sacrifice. We think that The Book of Mormon is the word of God. But we also recognize Joseph Smith’s flaws. Yet this song seems to elevate him to nearly divine status and I am unsure that is the way that I feel about the early Mormon prophet.

To non-Mormons, I would hasten to add that Mormons do not now nor ever have prayed to Joseph Smith. We do not believe that he has become a god. We do not think that he intervenes in our lives or in the present workings of the church. The current prophet of the church is inspired by Jesus Christ, not by Joseph Smith, and it is Christ who is the head of our current church.

And yet, I am still bothered by what seem to me remnants of a near deification of Joseph Smith that happened shortly after his martyrdom. Joseph Smith was a prophet, yes. He was also, by his own admission, involved in treasure-seeking in his early years. He was notably bad with finances his whole life, which was part of the reason he ended up in Liberty Jail before his martyrdom, and part of the reason many of the most faithful Saints turned against him. He lied to his wife Emma about his involvement in polygamy for years before it became public. Also by his own admission, he lost the first 116 pages of the translation of The Book of Mormon, pages which were never found and which he was never allowed to translate again. The Book of Mormon which we have today is only a partial translation of the Gold Plates because of Joseph Smith’s flaws.

In the Doctrine and Covenants 135, our scripture claims that “Joseph Smith “has done more save Jesus only for the salvation of men in this world”. I worry that this sounds as if we think that Joseph Smith is in some way on the same level as Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith was a man, not the son of God. He was not divine in any way. He did not have the capacity to resurrect himself or to resurrect others from the dead. He could not suffer the Atonement of Christ which allows all of us to repent of our sins and return to God.

While I usually think Mormons do a good job of making Joseph Smith seem like a human being rather than god-like, there are moments like singing this song when I feel a twinge of unease, not just because of Joseph Smith, but because of our current leaders. Deifying our leaders creates problems in the church today. It makes it difficult for members to have their own opinions, politically and spiritually. It encourages members who agree wholeheartedly with the current leadership to shun those who speak out about their disagreement.

Disagreement, even in spiritual matters, is healthy within a church. Since Mormons believe that everyone has the right to receive individual spiritual enlightenment from God (even if not everyone is entitled to receive instruction about leadership matters), it is important to remember that God may speak differently to all of us. Figuring out how to hear God’s voice on your own is one of the elements of spiritual adulthood. If we remain forever depending on others to tell us what God says, we are spiritually infants and also in danger of being led astray.

Miss'd America Fifi DuBois — "It Was Really Great And Humbling To Be Crowned Miss'd America"

Profiling so many amazing queens this summer in my #PrideSeries has been a thrill, but Fifi DuBois is particularly special, as she’s a hometown girl of sorts. She is the current reigning Miss’d America and has been making her way to Atlantic City many times this year to give them their own regular dose of Fifi’s amazing talents and eye popping choreography. Fifi sat down with me to chat about what her year as MIss’d America has been like, how she got her start in New York City in front of some of the biggest names in the business, and what Fifi’s pride really means to her.

2016-08-20-1471698276-311130-13406741_1360801190614410_8783760927393842066_n.jpg

For those that have never seen Fifi DuBois on stage, how would you describe your performance style and “drag” as a whole?
I pride myself on being a classically trained dancer with a knack for comedy. So you’re gonna get a lot of dancing, high energy, some great story telling, and a few giggles to boot.

How did Fifi DuBois get her start in the extremely competitive New York City drag scene?
I started drag in college in Westchester and a friend of mine suggested I tried Shequida’s co-host contest at Bar-tini at the time. I get there end up performing in front of not only Shequida but also Pandora Boxx, Saharra Davenport, Alexis Arquette, and Manilla Luzon. Talk about being star struck! Beyond the nerves, it was extremely rewarding to perform for such legends. I also ended up winning the contest and booking the gig all by default because I was the only competitor… well and the rest is history.

You are the current reigning Miss’D America! How has your reign been, looking back over the past year? Favorite highlights?
It’s been great I was extremely humbled to be crowned; Miss’d America is actually my first official pageant title/crown. I had a blast going to mixers and press events in Atlantic City. I got to travel to different pride parades/festivals and perform with some amazing people. My favorite highlight would have to be riding in my first ever NYC pride parade! it’s just such a great thing to see miles of LGBTQ people and supporters stretched out cheering you on in one of the greatest cities in the world.

2016-08-20-1471698427-6877088-13151579_1162874680423979_5616161054275775787_n.jpg

What are some of your career highlights so far?
Besides winning Miss’d America, I would say getting to just do what I love for a living, getting to travel and entertain people all over. I have one of the most fun jobs in the world.

What is left that you want to achieve as Fifi DuBois? Any aspirations to be on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” perhaps?
One of my biggest goals is to headline my own show in Vegas. I would love to be a part of the “Drag Race” legacy its an incredible opportunity and you really get out of it what you put into it.

Speaking of “Drag Race” several NYC girls have won the crown. How do you think the show as a whole has been for the drag community?
Its exposed drag to an audience that may have never been exposed to it prior to the shows existence. A lot of queens like to harp on the negative aspects like an over saturation of queens, but one simply has to rise to the occasion, prove their worth and take the great with the slightly inconvenient obstacles. I love “Drag Race” and a lot of the queens that come out of it.

What does Fifi DuBois do when she’s not on stage?
I sit at home and work on costumes, or set lists, learn new songs, and anything else I can to avoid cleaning/organizing my disaster area I call an apartment.

2016-08-20-1471698458-8429400-13179180_1162874683757312_4061470774753472899_n.jpg

The gay community has had a very trying summer. What do you think are the biggest issues facing our community and what do you see as your part in helping to address them?
This is a tough question because I can honestly say I haven’t done enough, My best suggestions is to raise awareness; be seen, don’t turn a blind eye, and don’t hide. Be the difference you want to see in the world and please go out and Vote!

What does “pride” mean to you?
Pride is knowing yourself as best you can and showing it to the world, not having to live in fear of what other’s think. If someone else isn’t proud of who you are, that’s the least of your worries as long as you are.

Most importantly’-where can people see you perform?!
You can catch me every second and third Sunday of the month from 5-7pm at Boots and Saddle Drag Lounge 100A 7th ave south in New York. You can also follow me on social media @fifiduboisdq for updates on where else you can see me perform, and don’t miss the Miss’d America Pageant September 24th at The Borgata in Atlantic City!

New Study Pokes Hole In The Idea Of 'Healthy Obesity'

The most current conventional wisdom among doctors and obesity researchers goes something like this: While people who are obese are at high risk for metabolic syndrome ― a constellation of symptoms that increase the risk for Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and more ― there is also a significant group of obese people who are totally healthy and will remain healthy. This so-called “healthy obese” idea has been somewhat controversial ― a departure from decades of medical science that held obesity will, more often than not, had adverse effects on health.

Now new genetic research from scientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden suggests “healthy obesity” isn’t as clear-cut as it seems.

A genetic analysis showed that people who were obese but qualified as metabolically healthy still had fundamental differences in the way that genes in their fatty tissue express themselves. It’s unclear whether or not these genetic differences correspond to different disease risks, but the fact that genetic expression is altered on a cellular level suggests that there’s a lot more to healthy obesity than we think.

“Insulin-sensitive obese individuals may not be as metabolically healthy as previously believed,” said study author Mikael Rydén in a statement.

Genetic differences between obese and never-obese people

To see how genes expressed themselves in different types of people, Rydén recruited 65 people to participate in the study. Fifteen had never been obese, while the rest were obese people who were part of a clinical study on gastric bypass surgery and preparing for an operation.

Rydén and his team tested the obese patients for metabolic health by checking their insulin response; those who were sensitive to insulin are considered metabolically healthy, while the insulin-resistant are not.

Then the researchers took biopsy samples of abdominal white fat tissue from each participant for genetic sequencing.

Rydén found a big difference between the mRNA in samples from the never-obese and the obese. But abnormal gene expressions in biopsies from the group of obese participants were “very similar,” he said, with almost no difference between insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant participants.

This suggests that obesity may drive this unique gene expression even in cases when it doesn’t drive insulin resistance, Rydén explained.

Healthy obese people are distinct from the never-obese

While the results don’t offer any clear takeaways for obese people, Rydén says his research could indicate that people who are obese but healthy may still need medical surveillance for obesity-related conditions. Further study is needed to determine what the gene expression differences actually mean for health.

Other researchers praised the study’s design, but agreed its implications are not yet clear. Dr. Caroline Kramer, an endocrinologist and obesity researcher at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, pointed out that it remains to be shown whether or not the genetic differences in fat tissue are responsible for or even linked to metabolic differences in people of different weights.

Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the Washington University School of Medicine, felt the study affirmed the current thinking on “healthy obesity” through the insulin response tests.

“It shows clearly that there’s a real subset of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obese people, but it may not be so easily explained by differences in fat tissue biology,” Klein said.

Why the controversy over healthy obesity is so important

More than a third of U.S. adults, or about 79 million people, are considered obese and at higher risk for conditions like Type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease.

But research that raises the possibility of metabolically healthy obesity has not yet agreed on a definition of what exactly metabolic health is, which is why studies estimate that anywhere from six to 75 percent of obese people may be metabolically healthy, according to a 2014 review on the issue. Harvard professor Dr. Frank Hu outlined four criteria for healthy obesity in a 2013 op-ed: a normal waist size, sensitivity to insulin, normal blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and good physical fitness.

But to be clear, most scientists agree that people who clock in at 30 or over on the body mass index scale are probably at risk for serious health conditions ― if not now, then perhaps down the road. The reason researchers are so interested in the concept of healthy obesity is that obesity doesn’t appear to be a one-size-fits-all condition. And the more we learn about how obesity affects different types of people, the more precise doctors can be when it comes to recommendations for patients who aren’t sure if they should try to lose weight or just keep exercising and eating well while maintaining their weight.

“Further exploration of metabolically healthy obesity could help us fine-tune the implications of obesity,” Hu told Harvard Health. “It supports the idea that we shouldn’t use BMI as the sole yardstick for health, and must consider other factors.”

A Delaware-Sized Chunk Of Ice May Soon Detach From Antarctic Shelf

A massive crack in one of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves has grown exponentially in recent months, and scientists worry a break-off could destabilize the entire structure.

For two years, United Kingdom-based Project MIDAS has been monitoring a large rift in the Larsen C ice shelf, located on the northern end of the Antarctic peninsula. And if the project’s latest findings are any indication, Larsen C could be headed for a similar fate as nearby Larsen A and Larsen B, which collapsed and disintegrated in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

Since March, the last time satellites were able to observe Larsen C, Project MIDAS said the crack has extended nearly 14 miles ― about 3 miles per month.

“As this rift continues to extend, it will eventually cause a large section of the ice shelf to break away as an iceberg,” the research project wrote.

Now, measuring some 80 miles in length, the crack could ultimately dislodge a chunk of ice the size of Delaware, The Washington Post reports.

At 21,000 square miles, Larsen C is the largest ice shelf in the region, according to a 2015 report. In recent years, however, what was once a small fracture has rapidly moved through the frozen structure, widening to more than 1,000 feet. The crack, scientists wrote in last year’s report, “is likely in the near future to generate the largest calving event since the 1980s and result in a new minimum area for the ice shelf.”

Project MIDAS previously estimated the breakaway would remove between 9 and 12 percent of the ice shelf.

“The trajectory of the rift now implies that the higher of these two estimates is more likely,” the MIDAS team wrote in its post last week. “Computer modeling suggests that the remaining ice could become unstable, and that Larsen C may follow the example of its neighbour (sic) Larsen B, which disintegrated in 2002 following a similar rift-induced calving event.”

In 2014, more than a decade after its collapse, scientists determined the event was triggered by warming air temperatures.

Since ice shelves float on the ocean’s surface, the calving event wouldn’t immediately raise sea levels. An event of this scale, however, could destabilize the entire shelf, resulting in its disintegration and the release of the glacier ice it holds back ― ultimately raising sea levels.

As for when the iceberg will make its break, that’s hard to say, Martin O’Leary, a glaciologist at Swansea University in the United Kingdom, told The Washington Post.

It’s a lot like predicting an earthquake ― exact timings are hard to come by,” he told the Post. “Probably not tomorrow, probably not more than a few years.”

When it does, it could spark a vanishing act that resembles what happened at Larsen B, which NASA highlights in the video below:

The Makeup Industry's Frustrating Cycle of Struggle and Progress for Women of Color

Three years ago, I made a trip to Sephora with one specific purpose in mind: to search for the perfect foundation. Surely, some mystical brown shade existed at the elusive nexus of “good” and “right.” Having spent most of my life wearing solely mascara and a resting bitch face, this was my first time hunting for just one decent cream or powder amid the cascading options available for skin tones ranging from white to very white to kinda brown.

This all-analog DNA circuit calculates without going digital

DNA It’s a sign that we’re living in the future when using our own genetic machinery as a form of calculator or storage is nothing new — but make no mistake, it’s still very early days in this field and there are plenty of surprises ahead. Today’s surprise, for instance, is the use of DNA to do exact arithmetical calculations entirely in analog. Read More
