Sardinia Journal: A Tree Grows in Alghero

2016-08-23-1471932063-3034287-IMG_15502.jpg
Emily Dickinson once reputedly said something to the effect of, “I know Amherst well.” It doesn’t take long to realize that three of the items that are most characteristic of Alghero are caramel, coral and octagonal shaped structures and that sunbathers like to nestle themselves into the rock formations that lie all along the shoreline–finding little plateaus of comfort in seemingly precarious spots like birds do when they find their perches. Alghero, known as “The Coral Riviera,” actually had its own Musee della Corallo. Though it appears to have been recently shuttered, if you look through its iron gates you can see tree branches in its courtyard painted red to imitate the way coral looks. A version of medieval Catalan is still the indigenous language the way Ladino is in the Tyrol. When you walk down into the town you will actually see many remnants of the medieval era, one of them in the l7th Torre di San Giacomo (Tower of St. James) whose architecture is mirrored in the Villa Mosca or charming house, another octagonal structure that is set on a promontory above the main drag. Nature has unusual and inventive ways of accommodating itself to the rocky terrain. You may see a branch jutting straight out of rock and when you walk down into the old town you will note a solitary oasis amidst the old stone buildings. Yes a tree grows in Alghero, and one other thing, unlike many other towns in Italy, the toilets have seats.

Daughter Of Ex-Major League Baseball Player: ‘I Hate My Drunk Dad’

Richie Lewis was an elite college pitcher and a dynamic Major League Baseball player who faced off against some of the biggest names in the sport.

But now, his family claims Richie is a drunk who is embarrassing the family and slowly killing himself with whiskey, beer and pills, a claim Richie denies.

“I hate my drunk dad,” Richie’s eldest daughter, McKenzie, says. “I don’t know my father as a sober, functioning person.”

Former Pro Baseball Star’s Wife: ‘My Husband Has Told Me Alcohol Is His Best Friend’

McKenzie and her two siblings claim their father has been drunk at numerous family events over the years, including McKenzie’s high school graduation, his daughter Mariah’s soccer game, and even his own father’s funeral.

“He is, 100 percent, an embarrassment to the family,” Mariah says. “I just hate the person he becomes when he drinks.”

Richie, however, denies he has a drinking problem and says it’s his battle with depression that is the real issue.

Retired Baseball Star Richie Lewis Responds To Family’s Claim He Has A Drinking Problem

“Beating this depression is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Richie says. “I would rather face nine Hall of Famers at the plate than to try and beat depression.”

According to Richie, who spent seven seasons in the major leagues, his battle with depression started when injuries cut his baseball career short.

“Ever since I retired from baseball, it’s like, ‘Who am I?’” he admits. “I’m physically alive, but my spirit inside just died.”

Deion Sanders Offers Support To Former Teammate Struggling With Alcohol, Depression

Still, Richie’s children claim it’s the drinking that is taking a toll on their father’s physical condition – and they fear it could cost him his life if he doesn’t stop.

“It is sad knowing that your dad is going to kill himself slowly,” Richie’s son, Jake, says.

“In my book, it’s just a drawn out suicide,” McKenzie adds.

Dr. Phil On Being Raised By An Alcoholic Father

On Tuesday’s Dr. Phil, Richie’s family asks for help in getting the ex-baseball star to face his problem. Plus, his former college teammate and former MLB and NFL star Deion Sanders pays Richie a visit to try and talk some sense into his longtime friend. Watch more here.

Clinton, Conquering Pickle Jar, Laughs Off Claims Of Ill Health On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

During an appearance Monday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Hillary Clinton said she was unfazed by a new series of attacks questioning her health.

Allies of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, have been alleging that the media have failed “to point out several signs of illness by her.”

“Go online and put down ‘Hillary Clinton illness,’ take a look at the videos for yourself,” Giuliani urged viewers on Fox News last weekend.

In good humor, Clinton asked host Jimmy Kimmel to monitor her pulse while she addressed the claims (”There’s nothing there!”), which she called part of a “wacky strategy” that’s forced her to “sort of step into the alternative reality and answer questions about am I alive.”

“I don’t know why they are saying this,” Clinton said. “I think on the one hand it’s part of the wacky strategy ― just say all these crazy things and maybe you can get some people to believe you. On the other hand it just absolutely makes no sense. I don’t go around questioning Donald Trump’s health.”

Clinton went on to conquer an “untampered” pickle jar Kimmel gave her to prove her fitness.

While she claimed she wasn’t upset by such statements (”I don’t get upset anymore, because I’d be upset all the time.”), the former secretary of state noted such talk could hurt the country.

Kimmel also asked if Clinton would prefer to run against someone “more boring,” like Mitt Romney.

“I would prefer to be running against somebody I thought was qualified to be president and temperamentally fit,” Clinton said. “Yes, I would, absolutely.”

Take a look above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Augmented reality makes prototyping easy on Shaper’s Origin CNC machine

SONY DSC Innovations in 3D printing have done their part to inspire maker-culture. We print, or at-least try to print, drones, human organs, and even medications. John Kerry Warns South Sudan: Stick To The Peace Deal Or Face Sanctions

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

(Reuters) ― U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has urged South Sudan’s leaders to “get the job done” by fully implementing a peace deal or face a U.N. arms embargo and sanctions.

His warning followed meetings in Nairobi on Monday with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and foreign ministers from Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan to discuss escalating violence in South Sudan and the deployment of a U.N. protection force.

“It’s really up to the people, the leadership of South Sudan to lead and to do the things that they’ve promised to do,” Kerry said in an interview with South Sudan’s “Eye Radio” broadcast on Tuesday morning.

“If they don’t, then obviously it may be that the U.N. arms embargo and sanctions are going to be the tools of last resort. It’s not what people wanted to have to do, but our hope is that the government, the transition government will seize the bull by the horns here and get the job done,” he added.

Fighting in the capital Juba last month has raised fears that the five-year-old nation could slide back into civil war.

The violence prompted the United Nations to authorize the deployment of 4,000 extra U.N. troops to bolster a U.N. mission there, warning South Sudan it would face an arms embargo if it did not cooperate.

South Sudan’s government initially said it would not cooperate with the new U.N. troops which will be under the command of the 12,000-strong UNMISS mission. But since then it has said it was still considering its position.

Kerry said the force was not an intervention force that would challenge the sovereignty of the country. Its main task would be to protect property and civilians in Juba.

South Sudan secured its independence in 2011, but by December 2013 the longtime political rivalry between Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, and Machar, a Nuer, had led to civil conflict that often followed ethnic lines.

The two men signed a peace deal in August 2015, but spent months wrangling over details while sporadic violence flared. Crucial elements of the deal, such as integrating the government and former rebel forces, have not been carried out.

The fighting has killed thousands of people and driven more than 2 million people from their homes, with many of them fleeing to neighboring states.

Ask whether the United States was willing to help South Sudan’s economy recover, Kerry said it would only do so if the nation’s leaders implemented a peace agreement and was doing whatever necessary to stabilise the country.

“If they choose not to do that, then we, who have been the largest donor in the world to the government of South Sudan, will have to rethink what we’re doing,” he added.

Dog Elected Mayor Of Cormorant, Minnesota — Again

Duke may be the most popular politician in America, winning re-election for a landmark third time in a landslide.

What’s his secret? Probably the fact that he’s a dog, and everyone loves dogs.

In a vote held over the weekend, the 9-year-old Great Pyrenees won his third consecutive term as mayor of Cormorant, Minnesota. Voters paid $1 each to cast ballots in the election, which was held during the annual “Cormorant Daze” festival.

Everybody voted for Duke, except for one vote for his girlfriend, Lassie,” David Rick, Duke’s owner, told local ABC station WDAY.

As mayor, Duke appears on three highway billboards promoting the community.

While Duke’s role is somewhat unusual, he’s not the first animal to be elected to office in the U.S. Roadtrippers has a fascinating look at some of the nation’s non-human mayors, including two other dogs, a cat, a cow and a beer-drinking goat named Mayor Clay Henry III.

Casio G-SHOCK introduces Vintage Gold theme To Master Of G

vintage-gold-master-of-gCasio is a name not to be reckoned with when it comes to two things — the calculator, as well as their range of G-Shock timepieces. Granted, these are not the only two things that the Japanese company is famous for, but this does not mean that they are darn good at the mentioned pair of areas. This time around, we will concentrate on the fact that a couple of new Vintage Gold models will make their debut under the Master of G collection.

The G-Shock range of watches have long lived up to their namesake, being tough as nails and more or less capable of surviving just about any extreme condition without missing a beat. The latest vintage-inspired black and gold color scheme would cover the new Gulfmaster model (GN1000GB-1A) and Mudmaster model (GG1000GB-1A), delivering a stylish, classic look and toughness at a price point that would not be a burden to your pockets.

The Mudmaster range of watches happen to fall within the Master of G Series that have been specially designed for land, sea and air, and are famous for their ability to withstand extreme conditions anywhere on earth — unless you decide to take a journey into the earth’s core and get burnt up along the way, of course.

With tools and machinery being the inspiration, the gold accents on both the GN1000GB-1A and GG1000GB-1A have been specially designed to arrive with a weathered look, presenting them as though they’ve gone through years of service.

For instance, the bezel on the Gulfmaster GN1000GB-1A does make one think of a ship’s porthole which has been unrelentlessly exposed to wind and rain, whereas the gold detail on the Mudmaster GG1000GB-1A happens to resemble that of tools that have been polished by digging in the ground.

Regardless of which model you select, both of them will come with Twin Sensor technology that makes them very unique. These sensors will be used to control compass bearing, not to mention to measure temperatures, while bearing memory that indicates the bearing from a starting point to a destination, so that you know you are not lost and on track. They will both feature an asking price of $320 each.
