The Versatile Employer: Retaining Employees by Meeting Their Needs

Highly qualified personnel is a hard to come by — particularly in certain industries and fields of expertise. In order to recruit and retain top talent, companies need to ensure that their employees are happy. And one way to do that is being a versatile employer.

What exactly does that mean? It means that you have implemented a set of systems and regulations that allow employees to shape their working lives according to the most important needs of their private lives. Here are six measures that can help achieve a high degree of versatility.

Flexitime models
This is not a new idea, but it may just be the most important measure for most employees: Being able to interrupt work for private obligations, e.g. picking up a child from nursery or going to the dentist, without having to fill out a permission sheet every single time, is a freedom that is greatly appreciated by many employees.

Individual working hours
Many people, especially parents, love their job but can’t work fulltime anymore. Depending on their individual situation, 20, 25, or 30 hours per week may be their ideal number. If you are flexible in this regard, you will have a much higher chance attracting talents with time constraints.

Job sharing
If you have a job opening for a full-time position, you shouldn’t disregard all the applicants that want to work part-time. Instead you could set up a job sharing system where two people share the responsibilities of a single full-time job. The advantage for you: You will have to people fully qualified for the position which can come in handy in case of sickness etc.

Telecommuting
Nowadays, many jobs can be done anywhere, provided you have a computer or laptop and a working internet connection. Allowing people to work from home (or from any other place) – for special occasions (e.g. waiting for a water-meter reading) or regularly (e.g. twice a week) – will give them some additional flexibility to manage their private lives.

Sabbaticals
There can be many reasons for employees to request a break from work: They may feel the emotional need of an extended timeout, have private challenges to tend to, or want to study in order to become better at their job. Enabling employees to do that shows your willingness to adapt to their individual needs – and, in some cases, will ensure that an employee stays on board.

Child care and elder care provisions
One of the most common challenges for employees trying to juggle their work and life is that they have to take care of someone – this can be a child, a spouse, or a parent. You can help those individuals by offering various child care and elder care measures, such as sponsoring places in existing child care centres, establishing carers’ rooms and breastfeeding facilities, and introducing employees to community support networks on elder care.

Those are a few measures you can offer to your employees. They will make life easier for them and show them that you care about their wellbeing as much as you care about their productivity – and that you understand those two are interconnected.

An Immigrant Father's Letter To His Kids

2016-08-29-1472498561-9625207-FullSizeRender.jpg

My Dearest Aleena and Yara,

Happy Birthday!

Aleena, you are now putting together full sentences. Yara, you have just started to walk. It’s time for the 4th installment of my letter.

(Here are the letters from the past 3 years: 2013 , 2014 , 2015.)

This year I am going to tell you about America.

America is in the middle of a heated presidential election. I am deeply concerned by the divisive language used by the Republican candidate, Donald Trump. During his campaign, he initially expressed that all Muslims should be banned from coming to America. Then, he changed the ban to cover Muslims from countries compromised by terrorism. Either way, in Trump’s version of America, I wouldn’t be able to come to the United States. In Trump’s version of America, you wouldn’t have happened.

But, you did happen. And I am so grateful for that.

You represent the American promise that is at this country’s core! The promise that it doesn’t matter where you come from; what matters is where you go. The promise that if you work hard and do the right things, you will be rewarded with opportunities. It is a promise that doesn’t discriminate against race, religion, or gender.

I came to America in 1997 to pursue better opportunities, but I am not unique. Around the world, people look to the United States, like I did, and see a land of opportunity.

I arrived as a student of Angelo State University  —  a small university in western Texas, that I was able to attend because they offered me a full scholarship. Then, Microsoft  –  an American company  —  believed in me enough to give me a job. Today, I lead LiveStories  –  a company that governments across America depend on to make data-driven decisions related to building healthier, safer, and better communities.

I am grateful to the United States for the opportunities it has presented to me and I hope my efforts and contributions will build a better and stronger America.

For many people, the United States represents hope and justice. Whenever, the world finds itself in dark places of history, America is there to shine the light of reason and guidance. America gives opportunities to those in despair. America stands up for those who are unable to defend themselves. America gives voice to the voiceless. It is not perfect, but every day, guided by these principles, America gets closer to those ideals.

America’s foundation  —  the promise of a better future for hard-working, honest people, regardless of background  —  seems more fragile than ever. By the time I write the next letter, it could all be very different.

However, one thing will never change: your story. You are the result of that American promise. You are here because millions before you have made sacrifices upholding these values. Now it is your responsibility to cherish and protect these values and pass them on to future generations.

Don’t ever forget that!

Love,
Bazaan

Strong Deep Space Signal Discovered Could Be from an Advanced Civilization

Over a year ago, Russian scientists operating the RATAN-600 radio telescope discovered a very strong deep space signal. But they kept their discovery from the rest of the world until now. The story broke after journalist Paul Gilster laid hands on a research paper announcing the discovery of a “strong signal in the direction of HD164595.” This is a star in the Hercules constellation about 95 light years from Earth.

The signal was so strong and convincing that scientists are calling for permanent monitoring of the target and SETI along with other agencies are now in on the investigation. If the signal is from a planet with intelligent life, it could be a civilization much more advanced than ours.

A couple of scenarios are being tossed around; one suggests a Kardashev Type II civilization capable of sending out the signal out in all directions using enormous power generated by something along the lines of a Dyson sphere. The other is a Type I civilization that sent out a signal directly aimed at us. This latter option would need much less power and could be a civilization more on par with Earth.

I can’t wait to see how this investigation pans out over time and we will be looking out for more details.
