Common Causes Of Heel Pain:
1. Baxter nerve compression (Figure 2)
2. Plantar fasciitis (Figure 2)
3. Fat pad atrophy (Figure 2)
4. Achilles tendonitis (Figure 3)
5. Stress fractures of the calcaneus (Figure 4)

Baxter Nerve Compression (Figure 5)
Baxter nerve compression occurs when the first branch of the lateral plantar nerve becomes entrapped in the medial heel. The entrapment results in heel pain, paresthesia, medial heel tenderness, and abnormal sensation on the plantar aspect (bottom) of the heel. Typically, baxter nerve compression is seen in sprinters, dancers and gymnasts, who are frequently on their toes. This is because these athletes commonly have well developed abductor hallucis muscles, which often compress the lateral plantar nerve.

Treatment
Treatment includes heel stretching exercises, NSAIDS, orthoses, and surgery. Surgery will decompress the nerve at the fascia between the abductor hallucis and quadratus.

Plantar Fasciitis (Figure 6)
Plantar fasciitis is characterized by irritation and swelling of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot. This fascia can become inflamed and painful making walking more difficult. Plantar fasciitis is most severe in the morning when patients first stand on their feet. Pain symptoms will intensify with prolonged exercise or standing.

Treatment
Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes anti-inflammatory medications, heel stretching exercises, and shoe inserts (heel padding). Simply walking often helps relieve the pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

Fat Pad Atrophy (Figure 7)
In fat pad atrophy the fat that cushions the calcaneus is thinned. This condition is common in elderly people and can cause significant pain while walking. Fat pad atrophy is also seen in patients with a history of steroid injections.

Treatment
Treatment for fat pad atrophy includes anti-inflammatory medications, and shoe inserts (custom orthotics).

Achilles Tendonitis (Figure 8)
Achilles tendonitis is a chronic injury to the tendon that joins the heel to the muscles of the lower leg primarily occurring from overuse. Achilles tendonitis can make walking not just painful but also difficult. The achilles tendon gives us the ability to rise up on our toes, allowing for the act of walking.

Treatment
Treatment for achilles tendonitis includes anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, massage therapy, ice therapy and immobilization.

Stress Fractures (Figure 9)
Stress fractures of the calcaneus can occur as a result of overuse injuries. When a patient has a stress fracture they experience weight bearing pain and pain with side to side compression of the calcaneus. Stress fracture injuries of the heel are typically seen in patients who participate in running sports due to repetitive shock placed on the heel.

Treatment
Treatment of stress fractures includes rest, immobilization (partial to complete), and activity modification.

A Long Wait

Our nation is at a crossroads. What’s going on has been a century in the making. I, myself, have been following this nonstop, day in and day out, 45 years straight. Every day brings yet another piece of jaw-dropping news that makes me more and more nervous.

Soon it will all be over — we’ll see how it this process finally ends, and we’ll have to pick up the pieces and deal with our new reality. The country needs this more than ever. And if it should happen, it will be my happiest day in 45 years.

And that day is coming very soon. Not on November 8th, but October 8th. Go, Cubs, go!

Passenger On First Massive Cruise Ship Through Climate-Changed Northwest Passage: 'Makes U Think'

The first luxury cruise ship to pass through the Northwest Passage stopped at a remote Canadian beach town this week and was surprised, for some reason, to find that all the ice had melted. “Makes you think more about the global warming,” one Texan tourist on the ship remarked. Indeed it does.

Bowers & Wilkins Launches A Wireless Version Of Its P7 Headphones

bnw_p7Bowers & Wilkins is a brand known for their audio products, but if you have ever walked into a headphones shop or any of Apple’s retail outlets, there’s a good chance you would have come across Bowers & Wilkins’ P7 headphones, which you can probably recognize in the photo above.

Now it looks like the British audio company has finally made some changes to the P7 headphones that we’re sure some users can appreciate, and that is by cutting its cord. The company has recently announced a Bluetooth wireless version of its P7 headphones, meaning that you’ll get pretty much the same quality audio, just without the hassle of dealing with cables.

Of course there are some who might argue that audio when transmitted wirelessly won’t be of the same quality compared to wired headphones, but unless your hearing is that sensitive, there’s a very good chance that you won’t be able to tell the difference. However the only downside to the wireless model is that it will be priced higher.

The wireless P7 headphones will set customers back $400, with the wired version costing $50 less at $350, so if you think the convenience of a wireless pair of headphones is worth the difference of $50, hit up Bowers & Wilkins’ website to place your order.

Judge Rules In Rockstar’s Favor Over Lindsay Lohan GTA Lawsuit

gta5-2013A couple of years ago, Lindsay Lohan filed a lawsuit against Rockstar over the Grand Theft Auto V game. The actress/singer claimed that the developers used her likeness without her permission. The complaint at that time read, “Lohan argues that defendants purposefully used Lohan’s bikini, shoulder-length blonde hair, jewelry, cell phone, and ‘signature peace sign’ pose’ in one image.”

Unfortunately for Lohan, it seems that the courts do not feel the same way and have since ruled in Rockstar’s favor. According to the courts, even if Rockstar had purposely used Lohan’s likeness in the game, since GTA 5 is a work of fiction, it falls outside the statutory definitions of “advertising” or “trade”, meaning that Lohan can’t argue that Rockstar had profited from using her likeness to sell the game.

They add, “This video game’s unique story, characters, dialogue, and environment, combined with the player’s ability to choose how to proceed in the game, render it a work of fiction and satire.” It should also be noted that Lohan’s name or photo did not even make its way into the game. As it stands, Lohan’s case against Rockstar has since been dismissed, along with Karen Gravano’s case in which she too claimed that Rockstar had used her likeness and life story in the game without her permission.

Google’s New Phones Rumored To Be Called The Pixel & Pixel XL

htc nexusSo according to the rumors, Google is said to be dropping the Nexus brand for its smartphone lineup. We also know that HTC is rumored to be making two handsets for Google this year codenamed Sailfish and Marlin, so if they aren’t going to be known as Nexus devices, what will they be known as?

According to Android Police, they have learned from two independent sources that the handsets will be known as the Pixel and Pixel XL. The Pixel will be “Sailfish” while the Pixel XL will be “Marlin”, and given what we know about both devices (based on the rumors), it makes sense that they are so closely named.

According to the rumors, both handsets are expected to be largely similar in terms of hardware specs, save for some differences in screen size and possibly resolution, which is why the larger “Marlin” will be known as the Pixel XL. Plus Google has used the Pixel brand for its Pixel C tablet and Chromebooks before, so for them to start adopting it for their smartphones isn’t really that much of a stretch either.

In any case take it with a grain of salt, but Android Police has a very good track record when it comes to these things so there could be some truth to their claims, but in the meantime how do you guys feel about the Pixel and Pixel XL names for Google’s upcoming phones?

Blizzard Introduces Class Trials To World Of Warcraft

wow class trialsWith so many classes to choose from, we’re sure many gamers are torn between which character they should use their 100 boost in World of Warcraft. After all boosting the wrong class would be a waste of a boost, and paying $60 for another boost does seem to be a rather expensive lesson.

According to Blizzard, that will no longer be the case with the introduction of Class Trials. Basically players will now have the option of taking a level 100 class through a tutorial experience to give them the feel of a particular class before deciding whether or not they want to commit to it. If not they can just keep repeating the process until they find something they like.

“On the character-creation screen, players who have the World of Warcraft: Legion expansion now have the option to create and play a level-100 ‘Class Trial’ character with a preset class specialization. You’ll take this character through a tutorial experience and get a chance to play until you acquire your Artifact weapon—after that, if you’d like to play the class further, just apply a level-100 character boost to continue your adventure on the Broken Isles.”

This is a pretty clever idea and one we’re wondering why Blizzard did not introduce much earlier when character boosts were offered, but we suppose better late than never. In the meantime World of Warcraft’s latest expansion Legion is now live and players who have bought the game will be given one free 100 boost.
