Quick—which side of your car is your fuel filler on? No running outside to look, that’s cheating, and you might get hurt pulling your pants on. Chances are most of you at the very least had to take a moment to think about this. I suspect you won’t think long about what side your steering wheel is on. That’s because,…
Samsung’s plans to release a working and commercially available foldable smartphone has been rumored about for years. We know that the company has been working on the technology as they have demonstrated it in the past, but when exactly will we see it commercialized and available is a different story.
However it seems that we could be getting pretty close. According to the folks at Galaxyclub.nl (via PhoneArena), it seems that Samsung has recently filed for a trademark for the name “Galaxy X”, which coincidentally enough has been rumored to be the lineup of smartphones that will feature a foldable display.
This trademark was filed at KIPRIS, which is basically the body in Korea that deals with intellectual property. While Samsung has had phones with flexible displays, these flexible displays were fixed in their shape and design, meaning that they could flexed enough to be designed that way, but not flexible enough where you could fold/unfold it, which is what we’re hearing about the rumored Galaxy X smartphones.
There has been a bit of back and forth regarding the Galaxy X rumors where we heard at one point in time that Samsung almost decided to scrap their plans, but last we heard it seems that their plans are back on track and we could be seeing it launched in Q3 2017, which should also be roughly when the Galaxy Note 8 will be announced (unless they’re one and the same device).

When it comes to LG’s VR efforts, we have to say that the company hasn’t really seen much success in that regard. Last year they launched the LG 360 VR headset and the LG 36 CAM camera for capturing content in VR, but safe to say that it did not exactly take off the way that LG had anticipated.
However that could change because Valve has recently confirmed that they would be teaming up with LG to create a SteamVR-powered headset. LG isn’t the first to launch such a headset as that honor actually goes to HTC and the HTC Vive, and actually HTC has been pretty successful in that regard, with reviews suggesting that the HTC Vive is better than the Oculus Rift.
We’re not sure when this headset will be officially released, what kind of specs we can expect, and how much it will cost. However it has been confirmed that the prototype of the headset will be shown off at GDC at Valve’s booth later this week in San Francisco, so we guess we should find out additional details by then.
It will be interesting to see how the market will be reacting to LG’s VR efforts, especially when there are more established players in the field, but it will be nice to see how LG plans to go head-to-head with Samsung who has had some help in their VR efforts by Oculus.

[MWC 2017] There have been a few companies that have debuted proprietary fast-charging technology. For example last year Oppo unveiled their own Super VOOC charging technology, and OnePlus also debuted their own technology in the form of Dash Charge, so it doesn’t really come as a complete surprise that Meizu decided to create something of their own as well.
Announced at MWC 2017, Meizu has taken the wraps off the Super mCharge, the company’s proprietary fast-charging technology that will apparently fully charge a phone from zero to 100% in a blinding 20 minutes. Yup, this means that you could go for a meal, come back, and your phone is good to go.
According to Meizu, this was made possible thanks to the use of charge pumps which utilizes “two groups of conversion circuits to directly output half of the voltage.” This supposedly helps increase the charging efficiency from 9% to 98%, and according to Meizu, they measured the temperatures of the batteries while charging and found that they topped at 39 degrees Celsius, which should still be relatively safe.
Meizu did not mention when their Super mCharge technology would find its way into their phones or other third-party devices, although we have a feeling that another proprietary fast-charging technology is something that Google can’t be too thrilled about.

Xiaomi Mi 5c Officially Announced
Posted in: Today's Chili[MWC 2017] Whenever we hear about new Android smartphones that aren’t of Samsung or Huawei’s making, more often than not we’ll hear about how they are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series of chipsets. However this year at MWC 2017, Xiaomi is doing things a little differently.
The company has officially announced their latest smartphone in the form of the Xiaomi Mi 5c which will be the first phone from the company to be powered by Xiaomi’s newly announced Surge S1 chipset (previously codenamed “Pinecone”), which in case you forgot is an octa-core chipset with four cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and an additional four cores clocked at 1.4GHz.
The Mi 5c will also feature a 5.15-inch Full HD IPS display, and it will also be accompanied by 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. We’re also looking at a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP front-facing camera, a 2,860mAh battery, a fingerprint sensor on the front, and it is also expected to run on Android 7.1 Nougat.
In terms of pricing, Xiaomi will be launching the phone in China where it will be priced at 1,499 yuan which is roughly $218 after conversion. There’s a good chance we won’t be seeing the Mi 5c debut stateside anytime soon, but it will be interesting to see what other devices the new Surge S1 chipset will find its way into.

With the iPhone 5, Apple did away with the 30-pin dock connector and replaced it with a smaller and reversible Lightning connector. Sure there were some complaints at the start, but eventually Lightning became the standard connector for the iPhone and many accessories that were launched for it.
However come the iPhone 8, Apple is rumored to make some changes yet again. In a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall; via 9to5Mac), they are claiming that Apple is expected to ditch the Lightning connector on the iPhone 8 and instead replace it with the industry standard USB-C.
Apple is a company that is notorious for using proprietary technology, going as far as creating non-conventional screws so that the iPhone would be harder to be disassembled, so for Apple to decide to conform to USB-C is an interesting move (although there are some who have speculated that USB-C’s invention was helped along by Apple).
However given that the MacBooks have already made the transition to USB-C, maybe Apple is hoping to bring it all together somehow. The WSJ’s report had also previously suggested that the iPhone 8, which is said to be the 10th anniversary iPhone, will feature a curved OLED display. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think of Apple potentially moving to USB-C for the iPhone 8? Yay or nay?

Not all great music has to come from big record labels. Virtual reality is about to be invaded by derpy, mischievous rabbits. Ubisoft’s long-running Rabbids franchise is coming to Google’s Daydream VR platform sometime this spring, the publisher announced.
Quite understandably, all anyone could talk about after the Oscars gaffe for the ages between Best Picture nominees “La La Land” and “Moonlight” were those two films. But according to social media research firm Fizziology, another Best Picture contender had been the talk of Twitter on the film industry’s biggest night of the year before the mix-up.
“Hidden Figures,” the space race –era drama starring Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae, was mentioned over 80,000 times on the social media platform during the Academy Awards broadcast, the company found.
The film didn’t take home awards that night, but people raved about the cast’s “stunning” looks and used emotional words such as “moving” when the black former NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, whose work inspired the film, took the stage in front of millions.
“Many also took to social to generally praise the film, saying how it was their favorite of the year,” the firm said in a statement provided to The Huffington Post. Actress Henson was talked about the most, followed by her two co-stars.
The research company found that “Hidden Figures” saw “heavy organic conversation” ― meaning that a lot of real people, not media outlets, were talking about the film during the event. It was on par with the conversation around “Moonlight” throughout the night. And although “La La Land” garnered the most mentions, the company noted that those were mostly neutral and driven by the number of awards the film was winning (six out of 14 nominations).
For those who haven’t, there’s never been a better time to catch “Hidden Figures” in theaters.
