U.S. State Department Deleted Tweet Congratulating Iranian Filmmaker's Oscar Win

The U.S. State Department’s official Persian-language Twitter account tweeted and then deleted a congratulatory message to Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi, Reuters reported on Monday.

After President Donald Trump issued an executive order blocking immigration and travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Persian film director Farhadi said he would boycott attending the 89th annual Academy Awards, even though he was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for “The Salesman.”

“I hereby express my condemnation of the unjust conditions forced upon some of my compatriots and the citizens of the other six countries trying to legally enter the United States of America and hope that the current situation will not give rise to further divide between nations,” Farhadi said in a statement to The New York Times in January when he announced he would not attend the ceremony.

When Farhadi won the Oscar Sunday night, Iranian-American engineer Anousheh Ansari, the first Iranian to go into space, accepted the award and read a statement on his behalf.

A State Department spokesperson told Reuters that a congratulatory tweet was posted after the award was announced, but then deleted “to avoid any misperception” that the U.S. government “endorsed the comments made in the acceptance speech.”

Farhadi’s statement that Ansari read indicated that the director was not attending the ceremony “out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.”

Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan hosted the United Kingdom capital’s premiere of the film with a free, open-air screening in Trafalgar Square Sunday..

Khan said London was holding the screening to celebrate the city’s diversity.

The Guardian reports that the crowd applauded Khan as he declared, “President Trump can’t silence me.”

“We stand in solidarity with Asghar Farhadi,” he added. “We stand in solidarity with all those who are discriminated against because of their nationality, faith or background. We don’t just tolerate difference. We respect it, we celebrate it, and we embrace it.”

Farhadi told the crowd in a recorded video message during the screening that “despite our different religions, cultures and nationalities, we are all citizens of the world.”

Actress and model Lily Cole, who helped organize the event, said in a blog for The Huffington Post UK Monday that “it’s more vital than ever that individuals play an active role protecting and championing the spirit of openness” that the London screening celebrated.

Chrissy Teigen Roasts John Legend Over That 'La La Land' Oscar Loss

In 2015, John Legend won Best Original Song with rapper Common at the Oscars for the “Selma” tune “Glory.” In 2017, Legend’s work was up for another award after he appeared in the Best-Picture-nominated “La La Land,” which famously lost to “Moonlight” after a mix-up at the event on Sunday.

The singer’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, has refused to let the loss go by without comment.

In a series of videos posted to Snapchat Monday, the model-slash-social-media-queen teased Legend relentlessly by telling her followers ― and once, a van full of tourists ― that her husband won an Oscar! Just not this year.

Legend, who appeared onstage at the event with co-stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling before the “Moonight” cast and crew claimed their rightful spot, had tweeted his congratulations for the year’s Best Picture winners earlier.

“It truly is a beautiful film. Well done,” he wrote.

House Republicans Are Helping Donald Trump Keep His Tax Returns Secret

House Republicans shot down an effort to finally make President Donald Trump’s tax returns public.

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) on Monday proposed a resolution to invoke an obscure law allowing the Internal Revenue Service to turn over the president’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee for review. But the House voted 229-185, almost exclusively on party lines, to reject the effort.

The House used the law in 2014 during its investigation into the IRS’ treatment of tea party groups.

Pascrell first raised the idea of using the law again earlier this month, but was shot down by the Ways and Means committee chair, Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas.)

“If Congress begins to use its powers to rummage around in the tax returns of the president, what prevents Congress from doing the same to average Americans?,” Brady told Politico at the time.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) slammed Republicans for blocking efforts to release the documents.

“If there’s nothing there, then what are Republicans afraid of?” she said.

Trump is the first president in modern history to not release his federal tax returns. He blamed the decision on an IRS audit, even though the bureau has said it’s fine for him to release them anyway. He has also said that Americans don’t care about his taxes, a statement that polls have repeatedly disproven.

Demands for Trump to release information about his finances have not gone away since he took office. A White House petition demanding that the returns be made public has received over 1 million signatures.

Democrats have said that the president’s tax returns could help clear up his relationship with Russia following reports that the country meddled in the U.S. election to help Trump win.

Earlier on Monday, reporters asked House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) if Congress would consider issuing a subpoena over the returns.

“No, we’re not gonna do that,” Nunes said.

Robert De Niro Goes Full ‘Taxi Driver’ On People's Mean Tweets

Robert de Niro unloads on trash-tweeters in a new clip posted online.

The movie legend was among A-listers who responded to people’s horrible posts during Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars edition of “Mean Tweets.”

Each celebrity was filmed reading numerous tweets about themselves beforehand, with the best one from each used in Sunday night’s broadcast.

But as the “Taxi Driver” star’s responses were so honest and funny, Kimmel dedicated an entire segment to them Monday night.

Cartoon Donald Trump Gives Nightmarish White House Correspondents Dinner Speech

President Donald Trump says he won’t attend this year’s White House correspondents dinner.

So on Monday, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” imagined what would happen if a cartoon version of the commander in chief gave a speech in his place. See how it goes down in the clip above.

Colbert also suggested just why Trump was missing the event (apparently, he’s double booked) and predicted what he may talk about during his first address to Congress.
