The way things are going now, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050. An ambitious United Nations campaign aims to stop this from happening.

On Wednesday, UN Environment announced its #CleanSeas initiative at the Economist World Ocean Summit in Bali, Indonesia. The campaign focuses on two major sources of marine litter: single-use plastic bags and microplastics in cosmetic products. The goal is to eliminate these major sources of marine litter by 2022.

“We’ve stood by too long as the problem has gotten worse,” Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment, said in a statement. “It must stop.”

Each year, more than 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the oceans. Much of it can’t be broken down and will remain in the oceans for centuries. The debris injures and kills fish, seabirds and marine mammals. It also causes fish to be smaller and slower than those raised in clean water.

There’s also a concern that it could be harmful for humans to consume fish that have ingested plastic, but more research needs to be done on the issue.

Plastic pollution costs $8 billion in damage to marine ecosystems each year, according to UN Environment.

Ten countries, which are considered pioneers in addressing the issue, have joined the #CleanSeas initiative. They include Indonesia, Uruguay, Belgium, Costa Rica and France. The United States hasn’t yet joined in.

It’s up to the participating countries to find ways to reduce the amount of plastic being introduced to the oceans.

Indonesia, for example, has committed to slashing its marine litter by 70 percent by 2025. Uruguay said it will tax single-use plastic bags later this year.

Major companies are also getting involved.

Dell Computers announced that its product packaging will incorporate plastic that has been fished out of the sea near Haiti.

The UN also hopes to target the personal care industry’s use of microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles that are found in toothpaste and skin care products. In many cases these plastic beads have replaced natural ingredients. Waste treatment facilities don’t always trap microbeads after they’re flushed down the drain, allowing the beads to find their way into the oceans.

“On bathroom shelves around the world sit products that are destroying life in our oceans,” actress and advocate Nadya Hutagalung said in a statement. “No beauty product is worth destroying the world’s beautiful oceans, not to mention our own human well-being.”

All of Wonder Woman's Crazy History in One Comic Collection

Wonder Woman wasn’t always a member of DC’s holy trinity of superheroes. She was just another hero in the DC lineup. Sometimes she kicked ass, sometimes she watched her pal Etta Candy eat hams, and sometimes she was a powerless spy stalking Steve Trevor. But in 1972 Gloria Steinem put Wonder Woman on the cover of Ms.

NASA Discovers 7 Earth-Sized Planets 40 Light Years Away From Us

There are some who say that to think that Earth is the only planet in the universe that has living creatures is a very arrogant way of thinking, but so far from all of our explorations into space, there hasn’t really been much evidence to suggest otherwise, or at least as far as living creatures/organisms are concerned.

However during a recent news conference held by NASA, they believe that could change with the discovery of 7 Earth-sized planets that are 40 light years away from us and are within the “Goldilocks zone”. This recent discovery made possible thanks to the Spitzer Space Telescope marks the first time that astronomers have discovered another solar system that has planets that are roughly the same size as Earth.

NASA also believes that with the right atmospheric conditions, these planets should contain liquid surface water, along with oxygen, methane, ozone, and carbon dioxide in their atmospheres. According to Michael Gillon, lead author of the paper and the principal investigator of the TRAPPIST exoplanet survey, this “would tell us there is life with 99 percent confidence.”

Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate adds, “This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life.” If this sounds like exciting news to you, you’ll be able to find more information about these exoplanets on NASA’s website, as well as a recent Reddit AMA held by the team.

EVE Online To Crowdsource The Search For Exoplanets

With NASA recently announcing the discovery of 7 Earth-sized exoplanets (planets that are outside of our solar system), it is clear that there are still a ton of other planets out there in the universe that we have yet to discover. So much so that the developer of EVE Online, CCP Games, has announced that they’ll be helping to crowdsource the search for exoplanets.

Given that the game is space-based and is rather complex in terms of its politics, economy, and so on, it almost makes perfect sense for them to do this. According to the announcement, “Within EVE’s virtual universe, players will interact with real-world astronomical data provided by the University of Geneva through a fully integrated part of the EVE Online game experience called Project Discovery. Once enough players reach comparative consensus on classification of the data, it will be sent back to the University of Geneva for use in refining the search for exoplanets.”

Basically it sounds like real-world data will be used in the game itself, so while players play the game, they’ll be able to interact and interpret the data, which will then be sent back to the scientists to help them with their search for new exoplanets. Whether or not this will be successful remains to be seen, but this isn’t the first time something like this has been done.

A previous iteration of Project Discovery about the classifications of human cells proved to be very successful and had great results, so it is possible that the same could be achieved here with this particular iteration.

Google To Expand Waze’s Ride-Sharing Service

Depending on where you live, Waze might be more than just your standard navigation app. Now you might recall that back in 2016, Google launched a ride-sharing service using Waze. The initial rollout of the service was limited to San Francisco, but a report from The Wall Street Journal (via Fortune) has revealed that Google plans on expanding further.

Now before you get too excited, note that this expansion is only within the US and Latin America, meaning that Google’s expansion of Waze’s ride-sharing service will be more internal than external, so those of you living outside those regions probably shouldn’t expect these changes just yet.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Waze’s CEO Noam Bardin said, “Can we get the average person on his way to work to pick someone up and drop them off once in a while? That’s the biggest challenge.” The report is also claiming that the service will differentiate themselves from other ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft with its pricing where it will be considerably cheaper.

For example a ride downtown from Oakland, California to downtown San Francisco is expected to cost around $4.50, where UberPool and Lyft Line are priced at $10.57 and $12.40 respectively. No mention of any specific cities that the service will be expanded to, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more info.

A Definitive Analysis Of Donald Trump's Handshake

President Trump is a mediocre businessman, but he’ll tell you that he’s the best businessman and there’s no better businessman than him. Businessmen need to shake a lot of hands. It’s one of the best ways to seal a deal and we all know who wrote the definitive book on business: Donald Trump. While we’re not sure if there’s an entire chapter dedicated to handshakes in The Art of The Deal, it does look like President Trump has it on lock.

Honestly just take a moment the next time you see a Trump handshake and watch him pull people in with a strong and firm embrace. It’s been nicknamed the “clasp and yank.” It might sound like a sex move but it’s really just a strategic maneuver that shows a man in complete control.

It’s a good thing he’s got that handshake on lock because most of the other times he’s in front of a camera he’s not in control. So much so that it could be easy to assume the only thing Donald Trump knows how to do right is shake hands. He certainly doesn’t know how to speak to the public. He certainly doesn’t know how to deal with the media. And he certainly doesn’t know what’s beneath his sad sack of a gut (hint: it’s his penis.)

Anyway, we digress. Ozzy Man Reviews is here to give Donald Trump’s vice-grip handshake a definitive analysis that is sure to make you cringe with laughter. Let’s all take a moment and laugh at the President together. God knows most of us need it.
