Rep. Marsha Blackburn Besieged By Boos At Tennessee Town Hall

A passionate group of constituents and protesters alike greeted Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) at a meeting in Fairview, Tenn., on Tuesday afternoon.

About 130 prescreened people filled Fairview City Hall to hear Blackburn’s remarks. The city’s website said the event was open only to residents (population 8,000) who had reserved seats.

What began as a relatively sedate meeting at times escalated sharply as Blackburn fielded numerous questions, many about health care and the future of the Affordable Care Act.

After a brief overview of her legislative agenda, during which she affirmed her desire to “phase out” the ACA, Blackburn opened the floor to questions from the public.

The first question came from a constituent who said he was “concerned about oversight in Washington,” specifically the elevation of Steve Bannon, whom he identified as “a notorious white nationalist,” to the National Security Council.

Blackburn initially deflected, saying only, “I don’t speak for the president,” then, after saying she had personally had no problems interacting with Bannon, added, “I am not aware that he’s taken anybody’s place on the NSC.”

A chorus of incredulous boos followed. “It’s all over the national media,” the man asking the question replied.

Several audience members also shared critical opinions of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet appointees. A Franklin High School senior expressed concern about the abilities of newly confirmed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

“I think Miss DeVos is going to be a fine secretary,” Blackburn said to loud boos from the crowd. “She’s going to do a fine job.”

“We are not stupid,” someone in the crowd fired back. “Stop this.”

Jeers also followed a similar question about the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt.

“We’re all for clean air, clean water and want to have a healthy environment,” Blackburn told a woman who expressed concern that Pruitt would dismantle critical environmental safeguards. “Next question,” she said tersely, as someone countered, “You voted against that just this month!”

Do you think it’s right to prioritize people based on their religion? Yes or no?

Another Franklin High student asked the representative to comment on Trump’s statement that he wants to prioritize refugees who are Christian.

“Is it right to prioritize people based on their religion?” he asked, to applause from the crowd.

Instead of answering the question directly, Blackburn launched into a discussion of refugees and the need for more vetting, prompting the student to ask again, pointedly:

“Do you think it’s right to prioritize people based on their religion? Yes or no?”

“I know that Christians have seen incredible persecution,” Blackburn replied, prompting another chorus of boos.

Nashville’s WSMV-TV estimated 150 people gathered outside the town hall to protest. Reporter Kevin Trager said that officers prepared for up to 1,000 protesters, bringing about a dozen squad cars to City Hall hours before the event.

Unlike many of her colleagues who were caught off-guard by the large, unwelcoming crowds at town halls in their home districts, Blackburn knew what to expect.

Staffers for the congresswoman sought to downplay the event earlier this week, with Fairview Mayor Patti Carroll at one point removing information about it from the city’s website. Carroll told CNN Monday that she sought to classify the town hall as more of a “community meeting” intended as a “low-key” gathering with other local elected officials. As of Tuesday afternoon, the online listing appeared to have been restored

Across the country, representatives and senators have been skipping constituent meetings during their weeklong February recess.

In Colorado, where Republican Sen. Cory Gardner has declined to schedule any public forums, protesters planned an “in absentia” town hall instead.

“It’s his job to plan an in-person town hall, but since he has not, we will,” Katie Farnan, one of the organizers of the Denver event, told The Huffington Post in an emailed statement. “We have invited the Senator and sincerely hope he will come, but will hold the town hall with or without him.”

It’s a somewhat hypocritical twist for Gardner. Last month, the senator dismissed the sharp uptick in phone calls to his office as coming from out-of-state “paid protesters” who were preventing the voices of his constituents from being heard. Given the opportunity, it seems many politicians ― Gardner included ― don’t want to hear from their constituents in person, either.

Classic Toy Etch A Sketch Gets A Hi-Tech Makeover With An LCD Screen

Remember when you were young and one of the toys you used to play with was the incredibly frustrating Etch A Sketch, which would take you hours to put together a simple drawing? Perhaps kids these days with their smartphones and tablets might not see much fun in such “low-tech” toys, but not to worry.

Spin Master, the company that acquired Etch A Sketch back in 2016, and BoogieBoard have come together and have given the toy a hi-tech and modern makeover with the Etch A Sketch Freestyle. On the surface it still looks and feels like the old toy, except that under the hood it comes equipped with an LCD screen.

What this means is that you can kiss that black aluminum powder goodbye and instead kids will now be able to draw on the LCD screen using a stylus. As for the knobs on the sides of the toy, they will no longer be used for tracing, but instead they will act as stamps in which kids can make shapes on the LCD screen to enhance their drawings.

Essentially what this has become is a tablet of sorts, and the only part that remains of the classic toy would be its shake-to-erase functionality. We also guess that gone is the frustration of accidentally bumping into the toy and having your drawing erased. However if you think that this would still make for a great toy for your kids, the Etch A Sketch Freestyle will be available this coming fall for $20.

Apple Watch Series 3 Rumored To Use Different Display Technology

The Apple Watch was released back in 2015, and in 2016 we got the Apple Watch Series 2. This means that this year we should be able to expect the Series 3, but unfortunately not much is known about the Series 3 at the moment, save for this little tidbit from DigiTimes (via 9to5Mac).

According to the report, it seems that one of Apple’s suppliers TPK might stop producing touch panels for the Apple Watch. Apparently the company has been struggling to produce enough of these components for Apple, which some have speculated to be the reason why there might have been some supply constraint with the Apple Watch.

The report also goes on to add that Apple will also be using a different display technology for the Apple Watch. Instead of a touch on lens panel, Apple could be switching to a glass-film touch solution for the Apple Watch Series 3. It is unclear as to what kind of differences we might be able to expect in terms of responsiveness, thinness, more energy efficient, and so on, but those are one of the rumored changes that Apple will be making.

Assuming Apple does unveil a new Apple Watch this year, chances are we’ll be looking at a Q3 announcement, which was roughly when Apple made the Series 2 announcement last year when they announced it alongside the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Facebook Rumored To Get Into MLB Live Streaming

As you might have heard, Facebook recently more or less confirmed their plan for more video content by announcing a separate and dedicated video app designed for smart TVs. In the past we have heard how Facebook planned to use its reach to potentially become the next YouTube, or at least become a platform that could give YouTube a run for its money.

Now according to a report from Reuters, it seems that they have learnt that Facebook’s video plans could be expanding into the world of sports. The report claims that Facebook is currently in talks with Major League Baseball (MLB) to potentially live stream an MLB game at least once a week via its platform.

Consultants seem to be pretty optimistic about this deal as apparently it will help to attract a younger audience, something that Facebook seems to be lacking these days as teens and youth in general are turning to other social media platforms, such as Snapchat. It is unclear as to which MLB games Facebook could potentially live stream, but unsurprisingly both Facebook and MLB have declined to comment on the report.

We’re not sure if and when this live stream option will surface, but given that they are currently in talks it’s hard to say if Facebook’s attempts to court MLB will be successful in the first place, so take it with a grain of salt and check back with us later for more updates if there are any to be had.
