iPhone Users Spending More On Apps Than Ever

As we have said in the past, there is more to a smartphone’s success than just its hardware and design. Take for example how there are quite a few high-end Windows Phone handsets that never quite made it big namely because of its ecosystem, while at the same time we have low and mid-range Android handsets that are thick and clunky but yet sell like hotcakes.

That being said while iPhone sales appear to be on the decline, it seems that the spending of iPhone users isn’t. According to the latest stats from SensorTower (via Cult of Mac), it shows that iPhone users are spending more money than ever on apps, as you can see in the graph above where across the board, spending on apps in 2016 is pretty much higher than 2015.

This only goes to show how important having a good ecosystem of apps is. According to SensorTower’s stats, it is clear that gaming apps are leading the way in terms of generating revenue. Given how much money games like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Pokemon GO, and Super Mario Run have been earning, it shouldn’t be surprising.

However one of the biggest jumps comes in the form of Entertainment apps which increased by 130% from $1 to $2.30 per iPhone. It has been attributed to likes of apps such as HBO Now, Hulu, and Netflix which allows users to subscribe via in-app purchases, but what do you guys make of these numbers? Do you think you spent more on apps last year than the year before?

The MotherBox Brings ‘True’ Wireless Charging To Your Smartphone

Wireless charging tech isn’t new, but yet there are many who seem to be pretty excited about the iPhone 8’s rumored wireless charging. This is because Apple is rumored to introduce “true” wireless charging later this year where the need for wireless charging mats will no longer be required, and where you could theoretically walk around your house while your phone charges.

However whether or not those rumors will be proven true remains to be seen, but in the meantime if you’d prefer something a little more “real”, there is an Indiegogo project for a device called the MotherBox that is meant to offer up “true” wireless charging as well. Created by Yank Tech, the MotherBox is a hub that can supply up to 2 watts of power to a smartphone within a range of 20-inches, with the amount of power going up the closer the device is to the hub.

This means if you place your phone within 5-inches of the MotherBox, you could get power up to 10W. Now we know that a range of 20-inches isn’t exactly very far, but it is considerably more than what you can expect from wireless chargers today. The only downside is that your phone needs to be connected to a receiver, so your phone’s ports will be taken up.

Now as is the case with crowdfunded projects, it’s hard to say if the final product will actually deliver as promised. However if you think that the MotherBox could be a good investment, then head on over to its Indiegogo page and pledge your support.

Best Buy Slashes MacBook Air’s Price To $900

Apple’s MacBook Air laptops are pretty solid devices which did help kick off the whole Ultrabook category of laptops, but it definitely looks like Apple isn’t that interested in keeping the lineup alive for much longer, especially when you consider that Apple hasn’t released a major refresh of the laptop since 2015.

In fact to a certain extent, Apple is kind of positioning its low-end 13-inch MacBook Pro as a possible MacBook Air alternative. That being said if you just can’t bring yourself to justify paying for the smaller and arguably underpowered 12-inch MacBook, or the 2016 MacBook Pros, you’ll be pleased to learn that Best Buy has further slashed the prices of the MacBook Air down to $900.

What this means is that compared to Apple who is selling the same model for $999, you’ll be able to pick one up for yourself in a similar configuration for $100 cheaper. However note that since the MacBook Air hasn’t been refreshed since 2015, save for a bump in RAM, you’ll be using “old” technology.

In case you’re wondering about the specs, we’re talking about a 13.3-inch 1440×900 display, with an Intel Broadwell dual-core Core i5 processor clocked at 1.6GHz. It will come with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of SSD storage, a SDXC card reader, a Thunderbolt 2 port, 2x USB 3.0 ports, and a MagSafe adapter. If you reckon that this is still a good deal, then head on over to Best Buy’s website for the details.

UPS Is Also Looking Into Drone Deliveries

The idea of using drones to make deliveries isn’t new, and we have seen how companies such as Amazon and 7-Eleven are looking to take advantage of the technology. In fact in some countries such as Singapore, local postal services are also looking into using drones to deliver snail mail.

This is why it doesn’t really come as a surprise to see that courier company UPS is also looking into the technology. In fact just recently the company ran a test in which made use of drones to make “last mile” deliveries. Basically the idea is to increase efficiency where while the driver drives to some of their destinations, the drone can be deployed from the back of the truck to make deliveries as well, thus saving the driver and UPS time in the process.

This is especially true for rural areas which UPS claims are the most expensive to serve due to time and vehicle expenses incurred. According to UPS, even the possibility of saving one mile per driver per day could save the company as much as $50 million. Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability says, “Drivers are the face of our company, and that won’t change.”

He adds, “What’s exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes, helping them save time and deliver on increasing customer service needs that stem from the growth of e-commerce.” At the moment UPS’ efforts are thanks to a collaboration between them and Workhorse Group who supplied the truck and the drones. It is currently in testing and UPS will probably need FAA approval before it actually becomes an actual service that we can expect in the future.
