French far-right National Front presidential candidate Marine Le Pen canceled a meeting on Tuesday with Lebanon’s grand mufti, its top cleric for Sunni Muslims, after refusing to wear a headscarf for the encounter.

Le Pen, among the frontrunners for the presidency, is using a two-day visit to Lebanon to bolster her foreign policy credentials nine weeks from the April 23 first round, and may be partly targeting potential Franco-Lebanese votes.

Many Lebanese fled to France, Lebanon’s former colonial power, during their country’s 1975-1990 civil war and became French citizens.

After meeting Christian President Michel Aoun – her first public handshake with a head of state – and Sunni Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri on Monday, she had been scheduled to meet the Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian

He heads the Dar al-Fatwa, the top religious authority for Sunni Muslims in the multireligious country.

“I met the grand mufti of Al-Azhar,” she told reporters, referring to a visit in 2015 to Cairo’s 1,000-year-old center of Islamic learning. “The highest Sunni authority didn’t have this requirement, but it doesn’t matter.

“You can pass on my respects to the grand mufti, but I will not cover myself up,” she said.

The cleric’s press office said Le Pen’s aides had been informed beforehand that a headscarf was required for the meeting and had been “surprised by her refusal”.

But it was no surprise in the French political context.

French law bans headscarves in the public service and for high school pupils, in the name of church-state separation and equal rights for women. Le Pen wants to extend this ban to all public places, a measure that would affect Muslims most of all.

HARIRI’S VEILED MESSAGE

Buoyed by the election of President Donald Trump in the United States and by Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, Le Pen’s anti-immigration, anti-EU National Front (FN) hopes for similar populist momentum in France.

Like Trump, she has said radical Islamism must be faced head on, although she has toned down her party’s rhetoric to attract more mainstream support and possibly even woo some Muslim voters disillusioned with France’s traditional parties.

After meeting Hariri on Monday, Le Pen went against current French policy in Syria by describing President Bashar al-Assad as the “only viable solution” for preventing Islamic State from taking power in Syria.

Lebanon has some 1.5 million Syrian refugees.

“I explained clearly that … Bashar al-Assad was obviously today a much more reassuring solution for France than Islamic State would be if it came to power in Syria,” she told reporters.

Hariri, whose family has close links to conservative former French President Jacques Chirac and still has a home in France, issued a strongly-worded statement after their meeting.

“The most serious error would be to link Islam and Muslims on the one hand and terrorism on the other,” Hariri said.

“The Lebanese and Arabs, like most of the world, considers that France is the home of human rights and the republican state makes no distinction between citizens on ethnic, religious or class grounds.”

Africa's Elusive Forest Elephants Are Being Poached at a Staggering Rate

The population of forest elephants in Gabon’s Minkébé National Park—one of Central Africa’s largest and most important nature preserves—has declined by a whopping 81.5 percent since 2004 due to poaching. It’s considered a major setback for the preservation of this endangered species, of which less than 100,000 remain…

Pluto Might Be a Planet Again

Some NASA scientists are proposing a new definition of what a planet is to replace the definition adopted in 2006. That change resulted in Pluto being demoted to a dwarf planet. The definition was put forward by Caltech Astronomer Mike Brown.

According to the head researcher for the group proposing the new definition, planetary scientist Alan Stern, listening to an astronomer about planets is “bullshit.” I like this guy. Stern and his crew want to change the definition of a planet and eliminate the need for it to orbit a star.

The proposed definition reads: “A planet is a sub-stellar mass body that has never undergone nuclear fusion and that has sufficient self-gravitation to assume a spheroidal shape adequately described by a triaxial ellipsoid regardless of its orbital parameters.”

If that definition is adopted, we would get over 100 new planets in our solar system including our own moon and Pluto would once again be a planet. I like this idea, but I’m not sure other scientists would go for over 100 new planets.

Verizon Agrees To Buy Yahoo At $350 Million Discount

Verizon announced its intention to acquire Yahoo for $4.83 billion last year. Soon after the deal was confirmed it emerged that Yahoo had been a victim of a massive cyberattack. The company’s image suffered serious damage when reports of one attack after the other kept coming in. It was then reported that Verizon was looking for a discount on the deal and today both companies have officially confirmed the new price.

Verizon and Yahoo have signed a definitive agreement today which awards the former a $350 million discount on the acquisition price. The agreement has now been locked in which means there will be no more discussions about this.

“We have always believed this acquisition makes strategic sense. We look forward to moving ahead expeditiously so that we can quickly welcome Yahoo’s tremendous talent and assets into our expanding portfolio in the digital advertising space,” said Marni Walden, an executive vice president at Verizon.

Aside from the $350 million discount, both companies have agreed to shoulder the regulatory and legal burdens that have surfaced due to the massive hacks that Yahoo suffered in 2013 and 2014. Yahoo is even having to deal with an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission which is trying to figure out if the company took too long to inform investors about these attacks.

The terms indicate that Yahoo is going to foot half the bill for any non-SEC investigations and lawsuits related to the hacks. The company will also have to deal with any lawsuits filed by shareholders.

LG May Start Supplying Samsung With LCD Panels By July

Samsung has long been sourcing LCD panels from Sharp but it has had to make an abrupt change to the supply chain. Foxconn acquired Sharp last year and soon after that, the Japanese company informed Samsung that it will stop supplying the Korean company with LCD panels. Since then, Samsung has been looking for other suppliers and reports have suggested that it’s going to source LCD panels from LG Display. LG’s display affiliate is expected to start supplying Samsung with LCD panels by July this year.

LG Display CEO Han Sang-beom hinted earlier today that the company might be able to start supplying LCD panels to Samsung from July this year. The companies have been in talks about this since last year when Sharp notified Samsung in November that it would stop supplying it with displays.

“Nothing has been set in stone, regarding the supply schedule. I can’t give the exact time frame but it will be safe to say the supply can take place in the early second half,” the LG Display CEO told a local news outlet.

Samsung has reportedly leaned on its own display affiliate, Samsung Display, to increase the supply of LCD panels. It’s also said to be asking for help from other suppliers such as China’s BOE and Taiwan’s AUO.
