Targeting Gut Bacteria May Be The Key To Preventing Alzheimer's

Mounting research continues to show the links between the health of the gut and that of the brain. Now, a new study from Lund University in Sweden finds that unhealthy intestinal flora can accelerate the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The report, published Feb. 8 in the journal Scientific Reports, demonstrates that mice with Alzheimer’s have a different gut bacterial profile than those that do not have the disease.

The gut microbiome is highly responsive to dietary and lifestyle factors. This suggests that a gut-healthy diet may play a powerful role in preventing one of the most feared diseases in America.

“Alzheimer’s is a preventable disease and in the near future we will likely be able to give advice on what to eat to prevent it,” study author Dr. Frida Fak Hållenius, associate professor at the university’s Food for Health Science Centre, told The Huffington Post. “Take care of your gut bacteria, by eating lots of whole-grains, fruits and vegetables.”

In the new study, Hållenius and her colleagues revealed a direct causal association between gut bacteria and signs of Alzheimer’s in mice. When a group of bacteria-free mice were colonized with the bacteria of rodents with Alzheimer’s, they developed brain plaques indicative of Alzheimer’s. When the bacteria-free mice were colonized with the bacteria of the healthy rodents, however, they developed significantly fewer brain plaques.

Beta-amyloid plaques between nerve cells in the brain are a central marker of the disease. These sticky protein clumps accumulate between the brain’s neurons, disrupting signals and contributing to the gradual killing off of nerve cells.

“We don’t yet know how bacteria can affect brain pathology, we are currently investigating this,” Hållenius said. “We think that bacteria may affect regulatory T-cells in the gut, which can control inflammatory processes both locally in the gut and systemically ― including the brain.”

The contributions of microbes to multiple aspects of human physiology and neurobiology in health and disease have up until now not been fully appreciated.

The gut microbiome is intimately connected with the immune system, since many of the body’s immune cells are found in this area of the stomach, Hållenius added.

Anything that happens in the digestive tract can affect the immune system, she explained. “By changing the gut microbiota composition, you affect the immune system of the host to a large extent.”

The findings suggest that Alzheimer’s may be more more preventable than health experts previously thought. The composition of bacteria in the gut is determined by a mix of genetics and lifestyle factors. Diet, exercise, stress and toxin exposure all play a huge role in the gut’s bacterial makeup.

Now, the researchers can begin investigating ways to prevent the disease and delay its onset by targeting gut bacteria early on. And in the meantime, anyone can adopt a plant-based, whole foods diet and probiotic supplementation as a way to improve the health of their microbiome.

“The diet shapes the microbial community in the gut to a large extent, so dietary strategies will be important in prevention of Alzheimer’s,” Hållenius said. “We are currently working on food design that will modulate the gut microbiota towards a healthier state.”

The study is far from the first to show a connection between gut bacteria and Alzheimer’s. In a 2014 paper published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, researchers listed 10 different ways that the microbiome may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, including fungal and bacterial infections in the intestinal tract and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier.

“The contributions of microbes to multiple aspects of human physiology and neurobiology in health and disease have up until now not been fully appreciated,” that study’s authors wrote.

Donald Trump Begs The Media For 'Mercy' In This Shawn Mendes Mashup

President Donald Trump just wants some “Mercy” from the media.

POTUS appears to ask the press, who last week he dubbed “an enemy of the American people,” to lay off him in this mashup of Shawn Mendes’ hit ballad.

YouTube channel TrumpSings cut footage of Trump’s speeches with an instrumental version of the Canadian singer’s track.

The parody video kicks off with Trump blasting the media for trying to “attack our administration because they’re not happy for whatever reason.”

“Please have mercy on me, take it easy on my heart,” he then sings. “Even though you don’t mean to hurt me, you keep tearing me apart.”

Check out the mashup above, and the original song below:

Donald Trump: 'Anti-Semitism Is Horrible, And It's Going To Stop And Has To Stop'

President Donald Trump on Tuesday finally addressed an increase in incidents of anti-Semitism, saying it’s “horrible, and it’s going to stop and has to stop.”

Trump spoke about anti-Semitism while touring the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., according to NBC News.

When asked during a press conference last week about concerns over an uptick in anti-Semitic acts in the United States, Trump responded by calling himself “the least anti-Semitic person that you’ve ever seen in your entire life.”

Congratulations are in order for Hoda Kotb ― the “Today” show host has adopted a baby girl!

Kotb revealed the exciting news Tuesday morning, after calling into “Today.” The new mom shared an adorable photo of herself holding her new baby, Haley Joy, who was born on Feb. 14.

Kotb began tearing up while talking about her bundle of joy, whom she called “the love of my life.” Her fellow anchors were overwhelmed with emotion, too, getting misty-eyed as they gushed about Kotb and little Haley.

“This little girl, Haley, is the luckiest girl,” Matt Lauer said. “You’re going to be one of the most fantastic moms I can ever imagine.”

Following the announcement, Kotb’s co-hosts and friends shared their congratulations and well wishes on social media.

Supergirl Just Had a Super Frigid Surprise Cameo

It seems a little weird that a show about a bunch of aliens integrating on Earth would focus primarily on something as culturally specific as Valentine’s Day, but that’s what Supergirl did! But the show also used the opportunity to introduce on of Super-canon’s best villains: Mr. Mxyzptlk. But the fifth-dimensional…

You Can Now Buy Snapchat’s Spectacles Online

If you want to be like the cool kids, Snapchat’s silly looking video and photo-capturing spectacles are no longer restricted to those who can find its vending machines. Now you can also buy them online if you live in the US.

Head to the Spectacles website and you can purchase them in black, coral or teal for $129.99(USD). Only six of the fashionably questionable Spectacles can be ordered per address/person. But not for those who are outside of the states.

They launched last September and were popular in part, because they were cheaper and more approachable than Google’s high-end Glass wearable. They also displayed a clear ring of lights when the user is recording, which puts others at ease. They shoot footage in a circular format that allows other Snapchat users to watch in landscape, vertical, or a mix between the two. Snapchat sold them at a store in New York City at that time, which attracted long lines at first. Lately they have not been so popular, so they are hoping this renews some interest.

George Clooney Says The Sweetest Things About Becoming A Dad

George Clooney isn’t up in the air about he and his wife, Amal, expecting twins.

When French film host Laurent Weil introduced the subject by asking the 55-year-old actor how he would prepare for the role of fatherhood, Clooney joked, “lock yourself in a room.”

But he eventually got serious. “It’s exciting and we’re really happy and really excited,” he told Weil Saturday on “Rencontres de Cinema.” “It’s going to be an adventure.”

Clooney added that they’ve “embraced” the moment “with arms wide open.”

The 55-year-old actor and first-time dad, who spoke with Weil before he was to be honored at the Cesar Awards next weekend, noted that French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo had a child with Nathalie Tardivel when he was 70. “So I”m feeling a little better about being 56 by the time [they arrive],” he said.

The approximate due date is reportedly June.

Clooney told Weil he that when he broke the news to a tableful of friends whose kids are already young adults, they gave him a ribbing.

“It got really quiet, and they all just started making baby crying noises,” he said. “And the whole table just busted up laughing.”

The interview got naturally around to politics and President Donald Trump, prompting Clooney to say: “We have a demagogue in the White House; we need the fourth estate, which is journalism.”

Clooney’s remarks on fatherhood begin below around the 11-minute mark:
