In this generation of console wars, the Xbox One has lagged behind the PS4 in both sales and consumer mindshare. In fact, a January report from games intelligence firm SuperData pegged Microsoft has selling half the number of consoles as Sony. To be frank, Microsoft is getting its ass kicked.
I’ve been a big fan of Stephen King since I was a kid and found It on my dad’s bookshelves one boring summer day. Of all the King books I have read, my favorite series is The Dark Tower. I drive a lot for my day job and I listen to the unabridged versions on Audible. I am down to the final book after reading the very first book decades ago.
The Dark Tower series has eight books in it, and this box set is the first time all eight have been gathered together into a single collection.
The thing that I like is how so many worlds King has created come together in these books. If you haven’t read them I won’t give it away at all, but you need to read them. It’s a long read at 4,720 pages total but it’s some of the finest reading you will ever do. A movie is coming based on these books too. I hoped they would choose Clint Eastwood’s son Scott Eastwood for The Gunslinger, but I still think the flick will be awesome with Idris Elba as Roland, even though King makes it clear he’s an Eastwood type in the books
You can get the full box set at ThinkGeek for $147.99(USD).
Raspberry Pi is a great barebones computer for those who like to tinker and create stuff and while it’s unusual for us to see major hardware announcements about it, we do get one once every now and then and the latest one certainly demands our attention. There’s a new credit card-sized board out called the Raspberry Pi Zero W and it offers both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for just $10.
The original Raspberry Pi was launched a few years ago and it was followed up by the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero which promised 40 percent more computing power than its predecessor. The Raspberry Pi 3 was the last major hardware announcement that we had from the Raspberry Foundation and today it’s out with another one.
The Raspberry Pi Zero W brings wireless connectivity, hence the W in its name, but it has the same specifications as its predecessor. You’ll find the same single core Broadcom BCM2835 processor with 512MB of RAM and a 40 pin header. However, the board does feature 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 on the same Zero design.
Raspberry is keeping the original Zero board at $5 but since the Zero W has additional functionality, it’s going to cost $10. The Foundation is also selling new injection molded cases with interchangeable lids. Now that the board has wireless connectivity, the possibilities of what DIYers can do are limitless.

Microsoft has confirmed that it’s going to discontinue the Skype Wi-Fi service next month. This means that it’s going to end the service completely and the apps for iOS and Android will no longer be available for download as well. Those who already have the app installed on their mobile devices won’t be able to continue using the service because Microsoft will simply not let that happen.
Skype Wi-Fi allows users to connect to any supported public Wi-Fi hotspot so that they can browse the internet, make calls via Skype, and more. It doesn’t matter which hotspot they’re connected to because they pay for it using Skype Credit.
The company has confirmed that it’s going to fully discontinue the Skype Wi-Fi service on March 31st. The apps for iOS and Android will no longer be available for download starting April. Users who have the apps installed on their devices already will no longer be able to use Skype Wi-Fi as well.
The iOS and Android Skype Wi-Fi apps will not be able to find and use hotspots after March 31st. However, if users have any remaining Skype Credit, they will be able to use it for calls to landlines and mobile phones across the globe.
Microsoft says that it’s important to discontinue the Skype Wi-Fi service so that the team can focus its energies on providing the best possible user experience through Skype’s core feature set.

Apple appears to be the only big smartphone company that’s not yet done something in the mobile virtual reality space. The company appears to be more interested in augmented reality, its own comments reveal that much, but it hasn’t even shown off an AR product just yet. Apple is expected to do so with the iPhone 8 later this year. According to a new report, the company has around 1,000 engineers working on its augmented reality offering.
Business Insider claims to have seen a UBS research note which mentions that Apple may have more than 1,000 engineers working on an augmented reality project and that the company might come out with its very first AR offering with the iPhone 8 later this year.
The note mentions that the upcoming iPhone might include “moderate 3D mapping” features as well as an AR software development kit for developers which will allow them to build their own experiences by leveraging Apple’s AR technology.
This note is similar to the one shared by KGI Securities recently which mentioned that the iPhone 8 will have a “revolutionary” camera capable of sensing 3D space. It was also predicted that this technology would be used for features like 3D selfies as well as the ability to create avatars for use in augmented reality games.
None of this has obviously been confirmed by Apple as yet so take it with a grain of salt until there’s more information. Apple is not due to launch the next-generation iPhone until the fall this year.

It has long been rumored that the Galaxy S8 is not going to have a home button and that it’s going to rely on on-screen software buttons instead. That seems highly likely now because that’s what we’ve seen in all of the leaked images and renders. Samsung’s own Galaxy S8 teaser hints that much. The question remains, would there be anything special about these on-screen buttons? According to a new report, it’s possible that the Galaxy S8’s buttons might be customizable.
A new report suggests that a fresh leaked photo of the Galaxy S8 shows two different arrangements of the on-screen buttons on the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. On one of the models, we can see that the back key is on the left while on the other one it’s evident that the back key is on the right where you’d normally find it on a Samsung smartphone that has capacitive buttons.
This obviously begs the question that whether Samsung will allow Galaxy S8 owners to customize the on-screen buttons? They’re certainly going to be a big change for users and Samsung would want to make it easier for them to cope with this fundamental user experience change. Perhaps that’s one of the ways it’s going to make that happen.
We won’t know for sure, though, until Samsung makes the official announcement. Samsung confirmed a couple of days ago that it’s going to officially launch the Galaxy S8 at a special event in New York and London on March 29th.
