Verizon Droid Turbo 2 Nougat Update Released

Droid Turbo 2 owners on Verizon should clear up some time this weekend because their handset is receiving an update which brings the latest iteration of Google’s mobile platform. The Verizon Droid Turbo 2 Nougat update release is finally taking place. Verizon has updated its support page for the device to confirm that it has now started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat for this handset.

Google may have released Android 7.0 Nougat last year but OEMs and carriers have taken their sweet time in bringing the update to compatible devices. Over the past few weeks we have been seeing the Nougat update gradually make its way to devices from OEMs like Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony, and others.

Software version 25.11.10.kinzie_verizon.verizon.en.US has been released by Verizon for the Droid Turbo 2. It brings Android 7.0 Nougat and all of the features that are included in this latest iteration such as multi-window mode, quick app switching, bundled notifications, improved Doze mode for enhanced battery life, user interface tweaks, and more.

It goes without saying that this is a pretty hefty update given all that it brings to the table so users should ensure that they are connected to a good Wi-Fi network before they start downloading this update. Verizon has started rolling it out but it may take a couple of days for the update to go live for everybody.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 And 3 Android Wear 2.0 Release Not Due Before Q2

Google was first supposed to launch Android Wear 2.0 last year but the company decided to delay the release as it wanted to take more time to further polish the next iteration of its wearable device platform. It has finally released Android Wear 2.0 and has also worked with LG to launch two new smartwatches that are the first to be powered by it. Some older smartwatches are compatible with the new update but there’s some bad news for ASUS ZenWatch 2 and 3 owners.

It was first confirmed earlier this month that the ASUS ZenWatch 2 and 3 were going to receive the Android Wear 2.0 update. Many would have expected the update to be out in a couple of weeks but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The official Twitter account for ASUS North America has confirmed in response to a query that the ASUS ZenWatch 2 and 3 Android Wear 2.0 release is not going to start until early in the second quarter of this year.

What this means is that anyone who owns an ASUS ZenWatch 2 or 3 should not expect the update to arrive prior to April 1st because the second quarter of this year runs from April 1st through June 30th. This puts the potential release date over a period of three months with no concrete release date from ASUS. The wait begins.

Moto G5 And G5 Plus Official: Specs, Price, And Release Information

Lenovo-owned Motorola took to the stage at the Mobile World Congress 2017 today to unveil the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus. The new handsets try to push Moto’s G lineup into the premium category as far as the look and feel are concerned. Both models aspire to provide the same core experience but do have slightly different specifications. You’ll find the official Moto G5 and G5 Plus specs, price, and release information after the jump.

The Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus feature a 5 inch and 5.2 inch 1920×1080 pixel resolution display respectively. The former is powered by a 1.4 GHz Snapdragon 430 processor while the latter relies on the Snapdragon 625 processor. RAM and storage will vary by market, up to 3GB RAM and 32GB storage for the Moto G5 and up to 4GB RAM and 64GB storage for the Moto G5 Plus. Both handsets support expansion via microSD up to 128GB.

The Moto G5 has a 13 megapixel f/2.0 1.1 micron pixels rear camera while its larger sibling has a 12 megapixel f/1.7 1.4 micron pixels dual autofocus rear camera. Both handsets have the same 5 megapixel f/2.2 1.4 micron pixels camera on the front. The battery sizes are 2,800mAh and 3,000mAh respectively and support fast charging. A fingerprint sensor is also onboard on both models. Even though the Moto G5 Plus has NFC this functionality will be stripped from the units sold in the United States.

Both handsets are powered by Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and feature some software customizations from Motorola such as Moto Display for notifications and the same gesture support that you find on other Motorola handsets. They are also going to get Google Assistant in the near future as well.

Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus will be released globally next month in fine gold and lunar gray colors. Pricing will depend on market and configuration. The Moto G5 won’t be coming to the United States, though. Only the Moto G5 Plus will be released sans NFC with prices starting at $229 for the 2GB RAM and 32GB storage configuration.

Motorola And Amazon Bringing Alexa To Smartphones

Alexa was everywhere earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017. We saw Amazon’s virtual digital assistant being integrated into everything from smart connected devices to home appliances. The company has now teamed up with Motorola to bring Alexa to smartphones. Motorola today confirmed that later this year customers will be able to purchase a Moto Mod with Amazon Alexa for the Moto Z. This will bring the power of Alexa to their handset.

Amazon’s Jon Kirk made a brief appearance on stage during Motorola’s press conference and confirmed the company’s collaboration with Motorola. He showed a short concept video which featured a Moto smartphone connected to a speaker mod made by Harman Kardon that also had Amazon Alexa baked in.

This means that these mods will enable users to do almost everything that they can do with an Alexa-powered device like the Amazon Echo. Features include but are not limited to checking the news, requesting a ride from services like Uber, controlling smart home devices like thermostats and lights, creating reminders and shopping lists, etc.

Motorola has also confirmed today that later this year it will also start integrating Alexa into its smartphones which will enable users to access the digital personal assistant without having to even unlock their phone first.
