Honor VR Camera is a custom-made Insta360 Air

It’s actually been a while since we’ve seen new equipment that tries to actually create VR-related content rather than just consuming them. Professional VR cameras still cost an arm and a leg and probably more, but there are always cheaper and more portable solutions around. Some of those come from Insta360, a company that specializes in smartphone-compatible 360-degree cameras. It … Continue reading

The Morning After: Friday, February 24 2017

Good morning. We spent two days with the Nintendo Switch and we have feelings. Amazon is citing the First Amendment in defense of its robot Alexa, and we look forward to transforming into cups and bananas in Bethesda’s forthcoming Prey.

8 Foods You'll Be Surprised To Learn Aren't Always Vegan

We live in a very vegan-friendly food world these days. Even Ben & Jerry’s has put out a couple of vegan flavors. Unfortunately, not all foods are so nice.

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but there’s a chance that some of your favorite foods are not as vegan-friendly as you may have thought. You probably already know that honey isn’t vegan and you know the ugly truth about red food dye (it’s made out of crushed beetles), but there are more foods you’d never suspect are made with the help of animal products. We’re talking candy, beer and sometimes even cereal.

If you want to make sure you don’t accidentally ingest an animal product, we suggest you check out the list of these eight seemingly vegan (but definitely not) foods.

Without further ado …

Watch Ellen DeGeneres Give College Scholarships To An Entire Senior Class

So maybe you don’t think higher learning is a precious gift?

On her show Thursday, Ellen DeGeneres surprised an entire high school senior class of students from Brooklyn, New York, with college scholarships provided by Walmart.

The reaction all 41 kids from Summit Academy Charter School will stay with you for a while.

The host had previously given a check of $25,000 to the school when its founder, Natasha Campbell, and principal, Cheryl Lundy Swift, appeared on “Ellen” Feb. 9. But this time, DeGeneres and Walmart did one better to reward a school whose first graduating class boasted a 93 percent college enrollment rate despite being located in a neighborhood in which just 4 percent of adults have gone to college, according to the administrators.

The scholarships total $1.6 million and apply to any state university in New York, DeGeneres said.

At least we think that’s what she said. We’re still tearing up over the video.

Leia vs. Jabba in LEGO, Whoa.

One of the most iconic scenes in the entire Star Wars saga has to be the moment in Return of the Jedi where Princess Leia chokes the life out of Jabba the Hutt. After turning her into his personal slave, dressing her in an uncomfortable metal bikini, and shackling her in chains, Leia had quite enough. Now, this classic moment has been memorialized in LEGO, courtesy of artist Iain “Ochre Jelly” Heath.

This amazing build perfectly captures the moment, from the chains around Jabba’s neck, to the giant tongue sticking out of his mouth as he gasps for his last breath of air. It’s an amazing build, and I wish LEGO would turn this into an official kit, even though I know it’s something they’d never do.

Apple’s New iPads Might Only Be Released In May/June

According to a report earlier this week, it was rumored that Apple is planning on hosting an event in March in which new iPads (and a new iPhone color) is expected to be announced. Typically what happens following these events is that Apple will release the announced product a couple of weeks later.

However that might not necessarily be the case here. According to a report from DigiTimes (via 9to5Mac), it seems that two of Apple’s iPads might only be released in May or June. The iPads in question are the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch models. In case you haven’t been following the rumors, Apple apparently has a new 10.5-inch iPad in the works.

What this means is that if you wanted a new iPad, then either you wait until May or June, or you’ll have to settle for the 9.7-inch model, although we’re not sure if the 10.5-inch iPad will end up replacing the 9.7-inch model, especially since the difference in size isn’t that big compared to the 7.9-inch iPad mini, the 9.7-inch iPad/iPad Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

It is unclear as to why Apple might delay the release of the iPads, or why release them so late if they’re going to announce them so early, but either way take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully we’ll have the official details soon. In the meantime Apple has yet to set an official date for their rumored event in March.

Video Allegedly Shows iPhone 7 Plus Catching On Fire

While we have heard stories of phones catching on fire and exploding, safe to say that it was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s widespread debacle last year that more users are paranoid when their phones start to get a bit hot. Now thanks to a new video surfacing, we wouldn’t be surprised if iPhone 7 Plus users start getting a bit worried.

In a video uploaded by Twitter user Bree, it shows a video of her iPhone 7 Plus alleged catching on fire. As you can see in the video below, it shows how the back of the phone had already expanded and you can see how much smoke is pouring out from the device. Bree later uploaded a couple of new photos which shows how burnt and melted the back of the phone was following the incident.

Now before iPhone owners start to panic, it is unclear as to what might have been the cause of the problem in the first place. Not to mention the iPhone 7 Plus has been in circulation for a while already and while we might have heard of a problem here and there, they don’t appear to be widespread.

Bree has since been in touch with Apple and has turned her phone over to them where they are conducting tests, with the results expected within a week. In a statement provided to Mashable, an Apple rep said that they are aware of the video and that “We are in touch with the customer and looking into it.”

Early Nintendo Switch Reviews Highlight Joy-Con Connectivity Issues

The Nintendo Switch comes with a pair of controllers called Joy-Cons. They are wireless controllers which sound like they’re a great idea, but unfortunately it seems that early reviews of the Nintendo Switch have highlighted how the controllers are currently facing connectivity issues where they occasionally disconnect during gameplay.

The folks at Eurogamer and Digital Foundry claim that they have not experienced the problem themselves with their Switch review units, but there have been quite a few tweets by other reviewers that suggest otherwise. According to Jason Schreier of Kotaku, “The Switch left JoyCon’s sync issues have been so bad for me that I can’t play Zelda on my TV with it – using the pro controller instead.”

Damien McFerran of Nintendo Life is also reporting that he is experiencing similar problems with his unit. “I’ve noticed this as well, happened a few times to me. Assume a software fix is incoming.” It is unclear as to what might be the problem and whether or not it could be a hardware or software problem, but hopefully it is the latter as a software patch would be easier and cheaper than replacing units.

In any case the good news is that the Nintendo Switch will be released on the 3rd of March, 2017 which means that Nintendo has about a week to address the issue, and hopefully when the units are shipped out there will be a fix already, or it will be fixed in the factory. In the meantime a video from GameXplain (see above) shows the problem in action, so check it out if you’re curious.
