T-Mobile’s Des Unboxes The Galaxy S8 While Surrounded By Sharks

T-Mobile certainly knows how to draw attention to themselves, whether it be their mobile plans, their outspoken CEO, or their unboxing videos, which in the past we have seen them do all kinds of crazy stunts like unboxing the HTC 10 while at 10,000 feet. The company also did an unboxing of the Galaxy S7 last year underwater.

So with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8, it looks like the carrier has decided to take things to the next level. For starters T-Mobile’s Des has returned underwater once again for the Galaxy S8’s unboxing, but this time Des will be surrounded by sharks while he unboxes the handset (from the safety of a shark cage).

The unboxing shouldn’t really reveal any surprises since we all know what the handset looks like and what kind of accessories it comes bundled with, such as a pair of AKG headphones that comes with every Galaxy S8/S8+ handset. We suppose to a certain extent apart from it being a crazy stunt, the underwater unboxing of the handset also serves to highlight how the Galaxy S8 has an IP68 rating when it comes to water and dust resistance.

The handset is expected to officially go on sale on the 21st of April and are currently available for pre-order from various carriers.

Galaxy S8’s Facial Recognition Apparently Only Intended For ‘Fun’

Yesterday it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy S8’s facial unlock feature was tricked into unlocking using a photo. This highlights one of the problems of facial recognition tech at the moment where several years ago, Android’s own facial recognition system was similarly bypassed.

Now according to a report, industry sources are claiming that Samsung had intended for the feature to be used for “fun”, as opposed to it being a serious security feature that would protect the phone from entry from unauthorized users. The source was quoted as saying, “The phones can be unlocked by the face of a sleeping person, or even just by a photo. For now, the facial recognition technology is only intended for fun. It should not be considered as a foolproof security measure.”

While we can’t confirm if this was indeed Samsung’s intention to make facial recognition a novel or “fun’ feature, during our briefing with Samsung, the company did mention that face unlock isn’t as secure compared to fingerprints or iris scanning. We should also point out that during the briefing, an attempt to trick the phone in unlocking using a photograph was not successful, so we’re not sure what triggered it in the previous post, but presumably it might have to do with the color, lighting, angle, and so on.

In any case like we said, the Galaxy S8 does come with other more secure security measures like iris and fingerprint scanning, so those are some alternatives if you agree that maybe facial unlocking systems aren’t quite there yet.

CD Projekt Will ‘Think About’ Making Another ‘The Witcher’ Game

The Witcher is probably one of the more heralded RPGs in recent years, although with the launch of The Witcher 3, it seemed as though the folks at CD Projekt were done with the series. In fact last year when asked about the future of the franchise, they basically said that there won’t be any new The Witcher titles anytime soon, if at all.

However that tune might have changed ever so slightly. During a recent Q&A session at developer’s management meeting (via VG247), it was asked if The Witcher 4 was ever something the studio would consider, in which one of the executives at the meeting replied by saying, “The Witcher was designed as a trilogy and a trilogy cannot have a fourth part, can it?”

However he also added, “We like this world a lot. We invested 15 years of our lives in it and a lot of money. So, we’ll think about [making another Witcher game].” We suppose a lot of it will have to do with the demand for the game. If there is enough demand (which in turn translates to money that can be made), we’re sure the studio could consider revisiting it again.

Then again there are certain things that are best left finished, and maybe it’s best that The Witcher remain a trilogy, but what do you guys think? Are you happy the way the series ended, or do you think that more The Witcher titles should be made?

Adobe, Cornell AI transfers one photo’s style to another

There is no doubt that artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks have experienced huge strides in progress, but of their applications have been on things with “hard edges”. Those include search results, translation, board games, etc. Recently, however, progress is also being made in areas of computer vision, imaging, and graphics, for applications that are usually considered more “subjective”. … Continue reading

Sylvester Stallone's Tribute To His 'Rocky' Dog Butkus Is Just Beautiful

This throwback of one man and his dog packs an emotional punch. Sylvester Stallone posted a sweet tribute Thursday to Butkus, the bull mastiff who was his training partner in “Rocky” and “best friend” in real life.

Two photos the 70-year-old actor published on Instagram perfectly captured their bond.

Stallone recalled when he was broke and living in a New York City “flophouse” with “hot and cold running roaches.”

Butkus was there for him in the truest sense. “I relied on him for his companionship,” Sly wrote.

Man and beast came out winners. “Rocky” (1976), the iconic story of an underdog boxer, became a hit and earned the Oscar for Best Picture, launching Stallone to stardom.

Butkus (named for the Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus) put in such a strong performance that he returned to appear in “Rocky II.” He died in 1981.

Here’s Rocky Balboa (Stallone) getting Butkus as a gift from love interest Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire) in the original …

And the two training together.

 Good times.

Awesome Teacher Pranks Students With Gibberish-Filled Spelling Test

April Fool’s Day came early for these students in Michigan.

On Wednesday, teacher Joe Dombrowski treated his fourth-grade class at Oakland Elementary School in Royal Oak to a spelling test. But as a lighthearted prank, he asked them to spell a bunch of totally made up words — such as “blorskee,” “tangeteen” and “speekuzslmn.”

The 27-year-old then filmed himself reading out the “correct” spellings, and giving examples of how each of his phony words may be used in a sentence:

“The first word was blorskee, I lost my blorskee at a carnival,” he says in the above clip.

Dombrowski later reveals that “speekuzslmn” is something “actually from somewhere else not here.”

The kids can be heard sighing at getting the answers wrong, as he spells out each of his 10 fake words. Then Dombrowski lets them in on the joke.

“Your next word, number 11, is April Fool’s because this is an April Fool’s joke,” he says. As the children cheer in disbelief, he jokingly asks them to “turn in your tests, this will be on your report card.”

“I absolutely love teaching,” Dombrowski told The Huffington Post on Friday, saying the prank was a great way to connect with the youngsters.

“Students don’t care what you know until you know that you care. So, I decided to have some fun with them and they loved it,” he said. “I was glad to see them smile and enjoying school and collectively we were glad to have brought joy to so many other people.”

He shared the clip to Facebook on Wednesday, where it’s been viewed more than 6.5 million times. Some users suggested other teachers perform similar jokes on their own students.

Samsung DeX Station Dock Now Available For Pre-Order

One of the rumored features of the Samsung Galaxy S8 was that it would come with Continuum-like features, where users could basically use the phone and connect it to a display and it would allow users to use it like they would with a desktop. Following the launch of the handset, the rumor was proven true.

For those who are interested in this feature, you might be interested to learn that the Samsung DeX Station Dock is now available for pre-order in the US via Samsung’s online store. The DeX Station is priced at $150 which is by no means cheap. Combine this with the handset’s price of $750 for the Galaxy S8 and $850 for the Galaxy S8+ and you would be spending between $900-$1,000 in total.

However we guess if you do see a need for the DeX Station, maybe for work purposes, then we guess it could be a good investment. At the moment it’s a bit too early to tell if the DeX Station will be a useful feature or if it is simply a novelty. After all it’s not as if Windows 10’s Continuum feature is being highly-raved about, so we’re not sure how different the DeX Station will be.

In any case we guess only time will tell how well-received this feature will be and if the DeX Station will be worth $150. In the meantime the device has been listed as shipping in late April where presumably it should launch alongside the Galaxy S8 on the 21st of April.

Polar M600 Android Wear 2.0 Rollout Has Already Begun

Polar has been known to put out various health and fitness related wearables and accessories, but it was only in 2016 that the company decided to hop on board the Android Wear bandwagon with the launch of the Polar M600. The good news for M600 owners is that the company is not wasting time and is rolling out the Android Wear 2.0 update.

The rollout was revealed on Twitter by Polar’s official account where a rep announced that the update is beginning its rollout today. The company also expects that the update should make its way to more users within the next week, and that M600 owners will just have to look out for the notification that will let them know when the update is available for download.

This announcement by Polar is good news because if you might recall, Google recently announced that they have halted the rollout of Android Wear 2.0 for some devices. Apparently a bug was discovered at the very last minute which explains the reason behind the delay. However it looks like it did not affect the M600 so that’s a good thing.

No word on when Google plans on resuming the rollout of Android Wear 2.0 for the devices that have yet to get it, but M600 need not concern themselves with it.

OnePlus Teases Dash Charge Related Announcement

With the launch of the OnePlus 3, the company introduced a quick charging feature called Dash Charge. Given that various handset manufacturers have been introducing their own fast charging technology, we guess this didn’t really come as a surprise. That being said, it looks like OnePlus might have some kind of Dash Charge announcement that they could be making today.

This is according to a recent tweet by the company’s Twitter account in which they say, “Meet the future of Dash Charge tomorrow.” We’re not sure what that means although there are some who are suspicious that it could have to do with some kind of April Fool’s joke. This is based on a tweet sent out by the company on the 29th of March in which they asked what they should Dash Charge next, followed by images of a water bottle, a toothbrush, a shoe, and a duster.

However given that the Dash Charge announcement falls on the 31st of March, a day before April Fool’s, maybe that isn’t the case. Then again T-Mobile did go live with their April Fool’s joke a bit early, so maybe OnePlus could be doing the same. Let’s not forget that there are some parts of the world where “tomorrow” would already be the 1st of April.

In any case we guess we’ll just have to wait and see, so do check back with us tomorrow if you’d like to find out the details (or the joke).
