First connected Casio G-SHOCK Gravitymaster revealed

gravitymaster-bt-mastergCasio’s obsession with rolling out quality timepieces has not stopped over the years, but rather, it has strengthened. The company has revealed its Gravitymaster G-Shock series in the past, but none of them have been up to the quality of this year’s model at Baselworld 2017 — where it is touted to be the first ever connected Gravitymaster G-Shock that has been released. This all new Master of G model will boast of Bluetooth connectivity that will hook up to your smartphone via an app, making it all the more versatile than ever before.

The Casio G-Shock Gravitymaster GPW2000-1A is the first-ever Bluetooth connected model under part of the Master of G series, where it has been specially built for aviation experts. What makes it so special? Well, it comes with connected GPS capabilities that include Mission Stamp, which is a function that will not only record time and location, it can also transmit the information via Bluetooth over to a special Smartphone Link app. This can then be viewed within a flight log.

The GPW2000-1A also carries the distinction of being the very first Gravitymaster model that comes with a longitude indicator, apart from a latitude indicator. This will add a key function to record travel location and history for pilots when they carry out their missions. Additional premium features that Casio has thrown into the mix include a sapphire crystal for minimal scratching, carbon fiber second hand, carbon fiber insert band and a unique carbon band lock insert, where all of these prevents loosening due to heavy vibrations.

Not only that, the GPW2000-1A will arrive with triple time adjust that is made possible thanks to Bluetooth connectivity and G-SHOCK’s GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor technology. This results in even more accurate timekeeping regardless of where you are, thanks to the receiving GPS satellite signals or terrestrial radio signals from up to half a dozen transmitters worldwide, based on the current location and environment. Don’t expect the new GPW2000-1A to be cheap though, as it has an asking price of $800 when it becomes available from May 2017 onward.

Wreck-It Ralph Sequel Will Focus On The Internet

Some of you guys might recall that back in 2012, Disney launched the Wreck-It Ralph animated movie, which focused on the character Ralph who was based on an arcade game. The premise of the movie was interesting as it took us around various arcade games, and it looks like the sequel will be taking us in a different direction.

Disney had previously announced that the Wreck-It Ralph sequel would be arriving in 2018, and now we finally have a release date as well as the title. In an announcement by Disney, it has been revealed that the sequel will be launched on the 9th of March, 2018 where it will be titled, “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2”.

According to the movie’s co-director Rich Moore, “To take these characters we love and have them enter the enormous world of the internet has given us so much to explore. Our production team has been hard at work designing a world that takes something we all think we know – the internet – but shows it in a whole new, imaginative way.”

Exactly what we can expect remains to be seen, but given the success of the original, many are anticipating the sequel, but either way it looks like we have about a year of waiting before we get to see it. In the meantime is anyone excited to see what the Wreck-It Ralph sequel will bring to the table?

Overwatch’s ‘Orisa’ Is Now Available in Competitive Play

A little over a week ago, Blizzard announced that the latest hero to Overwatch, “Orisa”, is live in the game. However as Blizzard had noted at that time, Orisa would not be available for competitive play just yet and would be available for pretty much all other game modes. Blizzard’s intention was to let gamers learn the character before introducing her to competitive play.

The good news is that if you have been hankering at a chance to play as Orisa in competitive play, you’ll be pleased to learn that the hero is now available for that mode. This is according to a tweet by the official Overwatch Twitter account which announced the character’s availability in Competitive Play.

For those unfamiliar with Overwatch and its different game modes, as its name suggests, Competitive Play is one of Overwatch’s modes that has been designed to offer up a more competitive/serious experience to the game where players can gain ranks on a seasonal basis, and it also rewards players with Competitive Points which can be used towards unlocking certain cosmetic items.

Given the competitive nature of the mode, we guess Blizzard wanted to give players some time to get used to Orisa’s skills and abilities, lest some players cry foul that they didn’t have enough time to master the character’s skills.

Adobe Figured Out How To Copy A Photo Style From One Picture To Another

If you’ve spent a fair amount of time editing photos, you know that you can save your edits as presets and use them to apply to photos in the future, assuming that you want them all to look a particular way. This saves photographers and editors a lot of time, especially if there is a certain theme or style that they want their photos to look like.

However have you ever seen a photo and wonder how that photographer managed to edit their photos in such a way that achieved that look? Some photographers might offer up their presets as downloads, but for those who don’t, the good news is that the folks at Adobe and Cornell University have figured out a way that can actually copy one photo style from one picture to another.

As you can see in some of the sample images above, we’re talking about a complete transformation where a photo taken in the day can be transformed into a photo that looks like it was taken at night, complete with the same lighting techniques and colors. How this was achieved was through the use of deep learning methods to capture the lighting and color cues from the reference image.

It is  then applied to the photo in a natural way so that the end result looks like it was edited that way on purpose, as opposed to just slapping on the various filters that might make it look unnatural. For those interested the research paper can be found here while the code to this photo transfer technique can be found on GitHub.

SpaceX flew a previously used rocket on Thursday in an unprecedented test of the durability of space equipment.

The Falcon 9 booster took off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and landed on an ocean platform called Of Course I Still Love You. The aerospace company founded by Elon Musk said it was the “world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket.”

The Atlantic Ocean landing took place about eight minutes after takeoff.

If such rockets can be used more than once, the cost of orbital flights by SpaceX (and others) could be vastly reduced. The multimillion-dollar boosters had been treated as disposable products after falling from rockets after the first stage of a flight.

The Falcon 9 booster was previously used in April 2016. Thursday’s launch was part of a mission to put a telecommunications satellite into orbit, Reuters reported

SpaceX has previously shown it can land a booster on a platform. The company first accomplished that feat in December 2015 when it landed its intact booster at Cape Canaveral, Florida. It has repeated the accomplishment eight times, Reuters said.

Musk challenged his company to further display its skill by next launching a rocket twice in the span of one day.

A webcast of Thursday’s flight is available on SpaceX’s website.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article misstated that Thursday’s flight marked the second time SpaceX had landed a booster. The company has repeated the feat eight times, according to Reuters.

Progressive Activism Has Surged Since Donald Trump Took Office

President Donald Trump’s first months in office have been marked by a surge in liberal activism that’s persisted long beyond the women’s marches the day after his inauguration. Progressive groups are seeing record donations and renewed interest in running for office, while Congress has been deluged with constituent phone calls.

New polling from SurveyMonkey quantifies just how concentrated that enthusiasm is: Self-described liberal Democrats are more than twice as likely as the public as a whole to say they’ve engaged in some form of activism during the past two months. That ratio extends to a wide variety of actions, with liberal Democrats roughly two times likelier to report having shared opinions on social media, signed petitions, written to Congress, donated money, protested and attended local meetings.

By some measures, progressive women seem to be particularly motivated. Although their overall levels of activism were similar, female liberal Democrats were 7 percentage points likelier than their male counterparts to report protesting, marching or demonstrating in the last two months, according to SurveyMonkey, and 6 points likelier to say they’d written to their members of Congress. In another survey, conducted by The Washington Post in February, they were 13 percentage points likelier than Democratic men to say they planned to get more involved in political causes this year.

“I think there was something really catalyzing about this election, for women in particular,” said Laura Moser, a newly minted activist and the founder of a text-message-based system called Daily Action. The service suggests a daily civic action for subscribers to carry out each morning ― often calling a legislator to register opposition to one of Trump’s policies or nominees. Since the service launched last December, according to Moser, it has garnered more than 250,000 subscribers and logs an average of 10,000 calls per day.

The activists flooding congressional offices with those calls are overwhelmingly female, according to a survey conducted by Democratic pollsters Lake Research Partners and shared with HuffPost. Of the more than 28,000 of the group’s members who responded to a poll sent out by text message, 86 percent were women and more than 60 percent were 46 or older.

Because the pollsters don’t have the demographic information on everyone in the group, there’s no way to know exactly how well the responses reflect the total makeup of Daily Action, let alone other activists. But Daniel Gotoff, the head of Lake Research’s New York office, said in an email that he was confident the result represented the group’s most active users ― “the ones making the calls and showing up at events.”

Two-thirds of those polled said they’d joined one of the women’s marches after Trump’s inauguration ― an event that left many attendees eager to continue their activism. They’re especially fired up about health care and climate change, which 37 percent and 36 percent, respectively, named as their “#1 voting issue.” Far fewer named reproductive rights, immigration or the economy as their priority.

Part of that likely comes down to the timing of the survey, which was fielded March 17-20, just as the debate over RepublicansObamacare repeal bill came to a head amid intense opposition from those who had voted for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Environmental issues also stand out as an area where Trump’s latest policies fall especially and increasingly out of step with public opinion.

The Daily Action users polled don’t intend to give up the fight anytime soon: About three-quarters said they’d be very likely to attend protests against the Trump administration’s policies in the future. SurveyMonkey’s national polling also finds liberal Democrats strikingly gung-ho about carrying their activism through to the next few years.

But it remains to be seen if progressive’s current level of enthusiasm can last through the 2018 midterms. While poor Democratic turnout likely didn’t cost Clinton the election last year, the party does traditionally struggle in midterms, when many of their base voters, such as younger Americans and minorities, tend to turn out in relatively low numbers.

Moser said she hopes the current level of progressive engagement will last through the setbacks inherent in facing off against a Republican-controlled White House and Congress.

“I think that’s a real concern that we’re all grappling with,” she said, noting that the GOP’s failure to repeal Obamacare had helped to buoy activists’ spirits after their failure to prevent the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education.

“I think the energy will return as the midterms approach more…. It’s really hard for people who’ve invested so much of themselves in these battles to confront the reality that we will lose a lot. I do think 2018, as it gets closer, it’s a more concrete thing we can do. I hope people can sustain it, but I understand why the fatigue can set in.”
