Climate Change-Deniers 'Spam' Thousands Of Teachers With Anti-Global Warming Packages

One of America’s most prominent climate-denying groups, galvanized by the Trump administration listening to their claims, has set it sights on a new target: teachers.

The Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank that’s become one of the loudest voices when it comes to climate denial, has sent more than 25,000 science teachers across the country a package of material it hopes they’ll use in the classroom, according to a report from PBS Frontline. Alongside a note from Lennie Jarratt, the group’s project manager for transforming education, the package contains a book called Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming and a 10-minute video about using their guidance.

“I’m writing to ask you to consider the possibility that the science in fact is not ‘settled,’” Jarratt says in the memo. “If that’s the case, then students would be better served by letting them know a vibrant debate is taking place among scientists on how big the human impact on climate is, and whether or not we should be worried about it.”

However, there’s near universal consensus among climate researchers that the planet is warming ― rapidly ― and human-induced greenhouse gas emissions are the primary cause. Earth experienced its hottest year on record in 2016, and officials have warned we’re running out of time to address the threat of climate change.

Jim Lakely, the Heartland Institute’s director of communications, confirmed thousands of copies of the group’s book have been sent out, and more are yet to come.

“The number put out by PBS Frontline might be low before it’s all done. We’ll see,” he said in an email. “We’re mailing out the material because the science is not ‘settled’ when it comes to what are the causes and consequences of climate change.”

The packages have already drawn swift rebuke.

“It’s not science, but it’s dressed up to look like science,” Ann Reid, the executive director of the National Center for Science Education told Frontline. “It’s clearly intended to confuse teachers.”

The National Council for Special Education published survey findings this month that 75 percent of public science educators devote time to teaching about climate change. But around 30 percent of the 1,500 teachers surveyed cast doubt on the cause, disputing scientific consensus about the phenomenon.

Some teachers expressed their dismay on Twitter at receiving the Heartland Institute packages:

Heartland has been riding high since the election of President Donald Trump, a who’s called climate change a hoax invented by the Chinese. The group hosted its 12th annual conference on climate denial this month. The event drew pro-Trump billionaire Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah Mercer, along with Myron Ebell, the man in charge of the Trump campaign’s transition at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Lakely said the group has been “meeting a demand” with the packages and that it’s been “contacted by many teachers who’ve asked us for science-based materials that will help them tell their students the truth.”

However, a Gallup poll published on March 14 found concern about global warming at a three-decade high, with 71 percent of Americans saying they believe the phenomenon is occurring.

Good Thing Disney Changed Nearly Everything About Elsa In 'Frozen'

Elsa, the magical white-haired princess Disney’s smash-hit “Frozen,” quickly became an audience favorite after the animated film’s 2013 debut. And not just because her signature song was catchy. When Elsa sings “Let It Go,” voiced by magical Broadway princess Idina Menzel, she embraces the thing that had made her a social pariah, allowing that unique quality to fill her with confidence instead of oppressive fear and anxiety.

But originally, as Entertainment Weekly reports, Elsa’s character was almost completely different: Her powers made her an evil villain.

Many embraced the version of “Frozen” that made it to theaters because Elsa’s contradictions felt new, and refreshingly human, in animated form. Although she can turn things to ice ― the stuff of cold-hearted evil in fairytale language ― Elsa doesn’t want to hurt anyone. And unlike many Disney princess movies of decades past, “Frozen” allowed its two female characters to be more concerned with the complexities of sisterly love rather than romance ― the absurdity of “love at first sight” is memorably laughed at when Anna meets the handsome Prince Hans. The movie aced the Bechdel test.

Originally, though, “Frozen” looked a lot different. Although the film went through many iterations before its release, producer Peter Del Vecho recalled some common elements from early drafts:

Elsa had turned into a super-villain after being left at the altar.

Yes, evidently, a man so hurt Elsa that she decided to turn her heart to ice, so she could never love again. In her new life as a woman scorned, Elsa became evil.

Elsa and Anna weren’t royals. They weren’t even related.

Non-princess Elsa and Anna might have been an interesting road for Disney, which traffics in princess tales. As newly orphaned royalty in the final version, though, we’re given strong, commanding female characters with a duty to their kingdom.

Elsa has a change of heart, literally, as Anna convinces her to use her powers to save the kingdom.

Having conjured an army of snowmen, Evil Elsa is taking aim at the innocent kingdom when Hans triggers an avalanche. The avalanche would stop Elsa’s army, but also put the whole town in peril ― not that Hans cared ― and so Anna convinces her to use her powers for good, which melts her frozen heart.

Anna’s frozen heart might’ve needed rescuing by a traditional “true love’s kiss.” (Yawn.)

According to Del Vecho, director Chris Buck started to wonder whether another form of love could have the power to save Anna, other than romantic love between a man and a woman. In the final version, as her frozen heart is consuming her, Anna rushes to save Elsa from Hans’ sword, shattering his blade with a frozen hand. Anna’s dramatic act of love for her sister turned out to be the key to thawing herself, and Elsa realizes that love can end winter.

Unsurprisingly, Del Vecho told EW that these ideas were scrapped because it “felt like we had seen it before.” Surely the world did not need any more one-dimensional, frigid Gorgons.

“It wasn’t satisfying. We had no emotional connection to Elsa — we didn’t care about her because she had spent the whole movie being the villain,” he said. “We weren’t drawn in. The characters weren’t relatable.”

We’re glad they made some changes.

Australia Hit by Real Life Sharknado

The Australian state of Queensland was hit hard this week by a vicious tropical cyclone. And while there has been property damage, thankfully no one was seriously injured by Cyclone Debbie. Well, no one, unless you count this 5-foot long shark that was found dead this morning near the floodwaters.

Alleged LG V30 Front Frame Leaked

Following the success of LG V-series of handsets, we can only imagine that LG will want to continue that success with the LG V30 later this year. Now thanks to a recent photo that was uploaded onto Slashleaks (via Mobile Syrup), the alleged front display panel for the LG V30 has been leaked.

Based on the design, it seems that LG will be keeping to the same design as the LG V20. There is a cut out where presumably the front-facing camera and ambient light sensor will go, and there is another cut above the main display where the secondary ticker display will be placed. Last year there were rumors that LG could ditch the secondary display, but this photo (if accurate) confirms that it will be staying.

Other than that it’s hard to tell how big the LG V30’s display will be, or how it will look like, but if this photo is the real deal then it is the first look that we are getting of the LG V30. That being said if you’re wondering about specs, back in February there was a leak regarding the handset’s specs.

For the most part the specs aren’t that surprising as we are talking about the use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and better audio technology, just to name a few. In any case we guess there is still quite some time to go before the LG V30 will be revealed, so take all of this with a grain of salt for now.

Galaxy S8, S8+ Resolutions Are Set To Full HD+ By Default

Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 and S8+ handsets are stunning devices and they sport pretty huge displays, at least bigger than their predecessors at 5.8-inch and 6.2-inches respectively. However interesting enough despite their huge displays, it has been noticed that the default resolution set for the phones is at Full HD+.

Now given that the phones have such huge displays, a lower resolution would technically mean it isn’t as sharp as it could be. For those wondering, FHD+ has a resolution of 2220 x 1080, but the good news is that as we have seen in an earlier leaked photo, Samsung has made it so that resolution on the phone can be changed and adjusted according to the user’s needs.

Users have the option of scaling it up to QHD+ which is 2960 x 1440, or bringing it down lower to HD+ which is 1480 x 720. There are obvious benefits for lowering the resolution, where there will be less strain put on the processor of the phone, which in turn means that you could in theory get more battery life out of your phone.

Whether or not this will make a huge difference also depends on how you use your phone. For example someone who maxes out the resolution but just surfs websites and chats all day will probably get more battery life compared to someone on HD+ who streams videos non-stop. Either way this is something to take note of when you get your phone, in case you do want to bump up (or lower) the resolution.

HTC Reportedly Trying To Land Contract To Build The Pixel 3

Last year’s Google Pixel handsets were built by HTC, and apparently HTC has a contract that will see them build this year’s Pixel handsets as well. Whether or not those rumors are true remains to be seen, but a report from DigiTimes claims that not only is this the case, but apparently HTC is trying to land themselves a contract for 2018’s Pixel 3.

Now the Pixel 2 has yet to be officially announced, let alone released, so we might be getting a bit ahead of ourselves with the Pixel 3, but the report claims that HTC is currently competing against the likes of LG, TCL, and Coolpad, who are allegedly some of the companies that are looking to build the 2018 Pixel phones.

However according to the report, they claim that LG mostly win the contract for 2018’s Pixel handsets, but they did not state why. LG has built some of Google’s Nexus devices in the past, such as the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5, so for LG to return to building Google’s handsets isn’t really that much of a stretch.

It’s also interesting that companies like TCL and Coolpad are vying for that opportunity, but we guess it makes sense since building a prolific handset like the Pixel will help thrust them further into the spotlight. In the meantime this year’s Pixel handsets have allegedly been given the codenames “Muskie” and “Walleye”.

Samsung’s Bixby Will Only Understand English And Korean For Now

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, it seems that Samsung is getting into the voice assistant game (again) with the launch of Bixby. Extensive tests have yet to be done on Bixby so it is unclear how well it performs against the competition, but if you are excited to get your hands on it, there is something to take note of.

According to Samsung’s announcement of the feature, they have noted at the bottom of the page that Bixby will only support English and Korean at launch, but Samsung expects that more language support will come in the future. We’re not sure when exactly that will take place, but we guess it makes sense that Samsung will expand language support.

However for now what this means for users is that if you don’t speak English as your native language or Korean, then using Bixby will be quite pointless as it won’t understand other languages. We’re also not sure how well Bixby will handle accented English, since there are other countries that speak English, but not necessarily American English, so it is unclear if Bixby will run into trouble there.

In any case if you are curious about some of Bixby’s features and what it is capable of, then head on over to Samsung’s website for the additional details.

Galaxy S8’s Battery Will Degrade Slower Than The Galaxy S7

With the mess that was the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s exploding batteries, we’re sure that battery is one of the issues that are on the minds of many Samsung customers. Now we know that Samsung has already put into place safeguards and processes to ensure that the Note 7’s incident won’t happen again, but there is more.

According to a report from Android Police, it seems that Samsung has told them that with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the batteries in these phones will apparently degrade at a slower rate compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S7. From what Samsung told them, it seems that after a typical year’s worth of charges and discharges, the Galaxy S8 will be able to maintain 95% of its capacity.

This is versus the Galaxy S7 which maintained about 80% of its total capacity. This means that in theory, you should be able to keep the handset around longer without having to worry about its battery losing its charge too quickly. Unfortunately Samsung did not detail exactly how they accomplished this, so we guess we’ll have to take their word for it for now.

In case you did not know this, lithium batteries have a natural tendency to degrade over time. This is why you might notice that some of your older devices no longer hold their charges as long as they did when they were new. While there are advancements made to batteries, for the most part lithium ion is still more or less the standard when it comes to portable devices.

Google Publishes Official Android O Walkthrough Video

A little over a week ago, Google officially announced the next major revision of Android in the form of Android O. The update was also made available as a developer preview, and clearly at this stage the preview is aimed at developers as opposed to regular users, but for those who are curious, Google has published a new video that will highlight some of the changes.

However we should point out that this video is once again aimed mostly at developers, but if you are familiar with the Android operating system, we suppose some of the topics covered might be of interest to you as it would signify the changes that Google will be making to Android O, as well as what you might be able to expect from apps in the future with features of Android O that developers could take advantage of.

The video is presented by Google’s Nasir Khan and runs for about 6 minutes so it isn’t particularly detailed, but we guess it should be good enough for developers to get an idea of what they can expect. No word on when Google will release Android O to the masses, but based on Android 7.0 Nougat’s release, Android users will have a bit of waiting to do, especially if they do not own a Nexus/Pixel device.
