Woman Sustains Second-Degree Burns After Fitbit Explodes On Her Wrist

We’ve heard of phones exploding, we’ve also seen hoverboards catch on fire, and now if you’re the type that gets paranoid easily, you might have to skip this post because it has recently been reported that our wearables could explode as well. In a report from Associated Press (via Gizmodo), a woman in Milwaukee suffered second-degree burns after her Fitbit exploded.

According to the report Dina Mitchell, the woman in question, was wearing her Fitbit when it exploded on her. This resulted in her suffering from second-degree burns and doctors had to pick pieces of plastic out of her wound. Mitchell claims she was reading a book when the tracker exploded and that there was no indication that anything was wrong. Mitchell said, “The Fitbit itself is totally melted. The bracelet melted, and I got pieces of plastic burned into my arm.”

She also claims to have been very careful when wearing the device, but it appears it wasn’t enough to prevent what happened to her. “If they are exploding or if there’s some type of malfunction with them, I mean, I’m going to have a scare from this probably, can you imagine what it would do to a child?”

To be fair, we haven’t really heard of Fitbit’s exploding so this could be a one-off incident. In a statement provided to Gizmodo, Fitibt said, “We have spoken with Ms. Mitchell and are actively investigating this issue. We are not aware of any other complaints of this nature and see no reason for people to stop wearing their Flex 2. We will share additional information as we are able.”

Did Powermat’s CEO Confirm The iPhone 8’s Wireless Charging Feature?

One of the iPhone 8’s rumored features is wireless charging, a feature that many Android phones already have, and one that quite a number of iPhone fans have also been asking for. However given that it is a rumor, it’s hard to say if it is true, although thanks to a recent statement made by Powermat’s CEO, it might have been confirmed.

According to Powermat’s CEO Elad Dubzinski, “With the recent announcement by Apple that wireless charging will become a standard feature in the next iPhone, we are finally at the threshold of mainstream adoption.” Sounds like quite the confirmation, doesn’t it? However before you get too excited, Powermat has since backed down from its statements.

In a statement provided to Cult of Mac, a rep for Powemat said, “It’s all speculation at this point. We have no inside information. Sorry to mislead.” Whether or not they really were speculating or they’re just retracting their words is hard to tell, but assuming it is the former, it is possible that the speculation could have arisen from Apple joining the Wireless Power Consortium earlier this year.

In any case we’ll just have to wait and see if wireless charging will indeed be a feature offered by the iPhone 8m, but until then what do you guys think? Is wireless charging a feature you think has been missing from Apple’s iPhones?

War Hero Senator Challenges Donald Trump With Patriotic Speech

Many Americans have challenged President Donald Trump’s bleak vision of the country.

But few have the credibility of Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), an Iraq War veteran who lost her legs in 2004 when a rocket-propelled grenade hit her helicopter.

Duckworth delivered her first speech from the Senate floor Tuesday, offering a nuanced but ultimately optimistic perspective on the United States’ past, present and future.

Although Duckworth never once mentioned Trump’s name, her remarks were a clear rebuke to the president and his nativist, “America first” view. It also criticizes Republican indifference to health care coverage and the GOP’s uneven record on civil rights.

Here is a key passage:

“America’s greatness has never depended on the strength of any individual person, but on all of us, working together towards a common goal. But when we’ve failed to stay true to our core values ― when we deny another person our nation’s promise of opportunity ― our national strength suffers.

“When a child can’t access the tools to succeed in school, when a woman can’t afford basic health care, when refugees fleeing terror see the door slammed in their face, when we deny civil rights on the basis of skin color or sexual orientation or religion, and when a working family can’t put food on the table, our whole nation suffers.”

Watch the whole speech above.

Contrast that with a key passage from Trump’s inaugural address:

From this moment on, it’s going to be America first.

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.

We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.

Where Trump sees newcomers and interaction with the world almost exclusively as threats to U.S. prosperity, Duckworth sees them as assets ― and views cutting them as the real threats to the fabric of the country.

Duckworth was elected to the Senate in November, defeating Republican Mark Kirk, 54 to 40 percent. She had served two terms as the congresswoman for Illinois’s 8th District, which includes Chicago’s northwestern suburbs.

Her victory returned an Illinois Senate seat to the Democrats that had once been held by former President Barack Obama.

'Hot Convict' Jeremy Meeks Deported From London

The American lawbreaker who became a viral internet sensation as the “hot convict” because of his visually arresting mugshot won’t get a chance to show England he’s become a model citizen.

Jeremy Meeks, 33, now a fashion model who had traveled to London for a photo shoot, was deported Monday night from Heathrow Airport because of his previous criminal record, according to the Daily Mail.

“I’ve been denied,” Meeks said as he walked through the airport, according to “Inside Edition.” “London don’t want me here. I done served my time. S*** is crazy. Don’t make no sense.”

Meeks, became known as the “hot convict” in June 2014 after the Stockton Police Department in California arrested him on weapons and gang charges, and his mugshot went viral. He spent two years behind bars, and was freed in March 2016.

The “hot con” has been working as a fashion model since February. But he never got beyond the airport for his London assignment.

Meeks’ manager, Joe Jordan, said his client’s paperwork to enter the U.K. was in order. Meeks also had a letter from his parole officer giving him permission to travel, according to the New York Daily News.

None of that held any sway with U.K. immigration officials, who escorted him onto a plane eight hours after he landed in London.

Jordan told the Daily Mail he hopes Meeks’ visa problem is temporary.

“He was on the right track for what we feel was going to be his new life. Now he’s very sad,” Jordan said. “Hopefully this is just a setback and he will be able to come back from this.”

Why Some Young People Combine Smoking And Drinking

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

For young smokers, the pleasure of smoking a cigarette is greater when they are also drinking alcohol than when they are also smoking pot, according to a new study.

The findings could have implications for helping people quit smoking, the researchers said.

The researchers surveyed U.S. adults ages 18 to 25 who regularly smoked cigarettes and also used alcohol or marijuana. The participants were asked whether their pleasure from smoking cigarettes changes when they drink alcohol or when they smoke marijuana.

The participants reported that they experience an increase in the pleasure from cigarettes when using alcohol, but not when using marijuana. [25 Odd Facts About Marijuana]

The findings suggest that the reasons why people combine smoking cigarettes with drinking alcohol are different from the reasons they combine smoking cigarettes with smoking marijuana, said study co-author Johannes Thrul, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education.

“Targeting the increased pleasure from smoking cigarettes when drinking alcohol could enhance effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions among young adults,” the researchers wrote in the April 18 issue of the journal Addiction Research & Theory.

On the other hand, the findings suggest that the participants who smoke cigarettes with marijuana are doing so for reasons other than an increase in pleasure, the researchers said. Therefore, “it may be more important to target other reasons for co-use of tobacco and marijuana,” they said. For example, they may use the two substances together because the nicotine in tobacco may lessen some of the temporary effects of marijuana, including sedative effects and impairments to thinking, the researchers said.

The study found similar responses among cigarette smokers who used both alcohol and marijuana, and cigarette smokers who used only alcohol or only marijuana.

Future studies should also look at what people say they expect will happen when they use cigarettes and alcohol together, or cigarettes and marijuana together, rather than just asking about perceived pleasure, the researchers said.

Aaron Hernandez's Brain Will Be Studied For CTE

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

The brain of former NFL player Aaron Hernandez will be donated to an academic center that studies a brain disorder linked to playing football, according to Massachusetts officials.

Hernandez, who was 27 and serving a life sentence in prison for murder, was found dead in his prison cell shortly after 3 a.m. on Wednesday (April 19), according to a statement from Joseph D. Early Jr., the district attorney of Worcester County in Massachusetts, who aided in the investigation of Hernandez’s death. The death was ruled a suicide, the statement said.

Although Hernandez’s body was released on Wednesday, officials withheld some of his tissues, including his brain, until the cause of his death could be determined. Now that this investigation has been completed, Hernandez’s brain will be released to Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center, which is the wish of his family, the statement said. [10 Things You Didn’t Know About the Brain]

Researchers at this center study CTE, a degenerative brain disease. The disorder is thought to be caused by repeated blows to the head that damage brain tissue, leading to a buildup of an abnormal protein called tau. So far, the center has identified CTE in nearly 100 former football players.

The condition can cause symptoms such as memory loss, impaired judgment, impulse-control problems, aggression, depression, anxiety and suicidality, the CTE center said. Several other former NFL players who committed suicide, including Adrian Robinson, Dave Duerson and Junior Seau, were later found to have CTE.

The condition has also been found in other professional athletes, including hockey players and boxers, as well as military veterans, the CTE center said. Currently, the condition can be diagnosed only after death.

Hernandez’s attorney, Jose Baez, said he hoped the study of Hernandez’s brain could increase researchers’ knowledge of CTE and help determine what happened to the athlete, according to The New York Times.

“We need to leave no stone unturned, and we need to specifically do everything possible to find out what happened,” Baez said.

As part of a class-action lawsuit settlement finalized in 2016, the NFL has agreed to compensate former NFL players for damages related to brain disorders that the athletes develop and that may result from concussions.
