Remember what it felt like a couple of months ago when you, as an American, didn’t give much thought to North Korea? I’d like you to try and remember that feeling over the next couple of weeks, because the US government wants that to change. The past month has shown a tremendous shift in news coverage about North…
Samsung’s Facial Scanning Tech Years Away From Being Viable For Mobile Payments
Posted in: Today's ChiliOne of the rumored features of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is a facial scanning system that could reportedly be used to facilitate mobile payments. Unfortunately upon the handset’s launch, it was discovered that the feature could be easily bypassed by using a photo. It was later revealed that the feature was only meant to be for “fun” and not for serious usage.
So what about in the future? Could it eventually become secure enough for mobile payments? According to a report from The Investor, they quote a source from Samsung and industry watchers who are claiming that the company’s technology is nowhere near ready for such use, and that we might be more than four years away from it becoming viable.
The source was quoted as saying, “In order for facial recognition to be solely used for financial transactions, it would take more than four years considering the current camera and deep learning technology levels.” Samsung has also issued a statement in which the spokesperson said, “We do not need to use facial recognition for mobile financial transactions because there are already high-level biometric technologies such as iris and fingerprint recognition. The question that when it will be used is meaningless.”
As it stands over in South Korea, the handset’s iris scanning feature will be used for financial transactions. Prior to this the feature could only be used to log users into their accounts, but it can now be used to verify and authenticate payments.

How tough is the Samsung Galaxy S8? According to a recent video uploaded by YouTuber JerryRigEverything, it shows that the phone appears to be able to withstand some forms of torture, such as bending, fire, and scratches. Sounds good, right? However if you drop your phone onto a hard surface like concrete, that’s a completely different story.
The folks at SquareTrade have decided to put the phone through its paces via a breakability test, and boy it did not fare well. To be fair, Samsung did not design the Galaxy S8 to be rugged in the first place (that’s where the Active version comes in), and the phone was clearly designed with aesthetics in mind where the phone is pretty much covered in glass all over, edge its sides.
This is why it did not really come as a surprise to find that the phone did not fare well when dropped onto hard surfaces. In the drop test where the phone was dropped at various angles from a height of 6 feet, it seems that the first drop was enough to result in cracks and loose glass. Dropping it on its back resulted in spiderwebbing and cracks, and a tumble test did not see the phone fare any better.
What’s the takeaway from all of this? Basically you’ll want to be careful with the phone when you’re out and about. Also invested in a rugged case or a screen protector might not be the worst idea either.

Back in March, the US government announced that they would be banning electronics larger than a smartphone from flights coming out of certain countries in the Middle East. This is apparently due to a threat in which it was believed that explosives could be smuggled on board inside a fake iPad.
However it looks like passengers flying out of Europe could soon experience the inconvenience that passengers felt when flying out of Middle Eastern countries. According to a report from The Guardian, they have heard that the US government could now be considering imposing a similar ban from flights coming out of Europe, although one of their sources told them that the UK could be getting a pass on this ban, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
In a statement made by Gillian Christensen, a spokeswoman for the US Department of Homeland Security, “We’ve said we will continue to evaluate the threat environment and make determinations based on that assessment, but we have not made any decisions on expanding the current restrictions against large electronic devices in aircraft cabins from selected airports.”
It is unclear as to why the US government could be extending the ban to Europe, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see if it does go into effect. So far there have been some airline companies flying out of the Middle East that have offered up various workarounds, whether it be allowing passengers to use their electronics up until the very last minute before boarding, or offering tablets/laptops for rental during the flight.

We get why there are games developed for PC, and why there are games developed for consoles. However if you wished that you didn’t need to swap between devices to play different games, your wish could soon come true thanks to the development of an app called Rainway, an app that reportedly lets you stream PC games onto consoles or other devices.
According to its developer Andrew Sampson, “Rainway’s signature feature is that it’s available on any device with a web browser. You’ll simply visit play.rainway.io, log in, and kick back with your favorite games. Native apps for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and other platforms are being developed to provide an even more seamless experience.”
This means that you’ll be able to enjoy PC-only games on your console, although we guess playing some games using a gaming pad might offer up a slightly different experience. Sampson is also claiming that any modern PC is compatible and that no additional hardware will be required. “The best part is that practically any modern PC is compatible. You don’t need to purchase any additional computer hardware and did we mention that it’s free? That’s right, no more 50 dollar boxes or subscription fees, the Rainway experience will be available free of charge for life.”
The app has yet to be launched but as it stands there will be a beta that will be held on the 5th of May, so gamers who are interested in taking part can sign up via its website.

According to the rumors, one of the popular consensus is that Apple will release three iPhones this year: the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8 (or iPhone Edition). However according to a new report from Micgadget (via MacRumors), they are now claiming that Apple will only launch two iPhones this year.
The report reads, “Some our friends from Foxconn confirmed that Foxconn received an order for two new models. It’s mean that Apple will be released two, not three models.” They add, “But rumors say that Apple will be released two iPhone 7S and one iPhone 8 (or iPhone Edition) models. Today we can tell you , that it’s not true. In this fall we can see only two models with new technology.”
Now this isn’t to say that they are wrong and that the previous rumors are right. After all these are all rumors for now, but as MacRumors points out, Micgadget doesn’t exactly have the most stellar track record when it comes to Apple rumors. Not to mention the report goes against more reputable sources like KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and also Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
In any case these are all rumors for now so they’re still best taken with a grain of salt, but what do you guys think? Could Apple stick to launching only two iPhones this year, or do you agree with the earlier rumors that we can expect to see three new models?

Have you ever wondered what it might feel like to be a self-driving car? To essentially put your fate into the hands of a computer a bunch of sensors? Turns out if you live in Phoenix, Arizona, you’ll be able to try that out for yourself because Alphabet’s Waymo has announced their plans to deploy 500 self-driving minivans in the city.
This will come in the form of a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivan where it seems that not only will these minivans be used to gather self-driving data, but it will also be used to offer up rides to the public. According to John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo, “Over the course of this trial, we’ll be accepting hundreds of people with diverse backgrounds and transportation needs who want to ride in and give feedback about Waymo’s self-driving cars.”
“Rather than offering people one or two rides, the goal of this program is to give participants access to our fleet every day, at any time, to go anywhere within an area that’s about twice the size of San Francisco.” If you are interested in taking part in this trial, you’ll be able to do so by heading on over to Waymo’s website and signing up.
It will be an interesting experience and it should also help the company gather more feedback from the public in the future, which in turn will help further the development of the technology which last we checked, still has yet to become a mainstream feature as the kinks are still being worked out.
