LEGO Mindstorms TrotBot Walks Like an 8-Legged Horse

This TrotBot was created by Ben Vagle. It is an 8-legged robot built out of LEGO Mindstorms and despite its looks, it uses a walking mechanism inspired by the gait of a galloping horse.

You can see it in action in the videos below. It is fun to watch and it really gets around on a variety of surfaces, uphill, downhill and over obstacles. Even though it has eight legs you can clearly see the equine inspiration in its walk.

It even makes a horse-like clip-clop sound in this clip (clop):

Given its all-terrain agility, I think we can expect to see more robots using this unusual walking gait. Ben goes into more detail about the build process on his website and over at Make.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Deluxe Content Can Be Unlocked Normally

If there’s a thing that developers and publishers like to do these days it is to offer up different versions of the game and they are selling. Sometimes this comes in the form of a standard and a deluxe version, where the deluxe version will come with additional goodies like special skins, in-game items, portraits, and so on.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is no different, but the good news is that if you’d rather not fork out extra money to purchase the Deluxe Edition, you’ll be pleased to learn that the content that you get from the Deluxe Edition can actually be earned in the game itself. The main difference is that the Deluxe Edition means you’ll get all the items right off the bat, but if you don’t mind grinding it out and doing some farming, then you could save yourself a couple of bucks.

This was confirmed by the game’s designer Christian Johannesén who answered a question posed by a gamer as to whether the content would be unlockable, in which he replied by saying, “Can be unlocked by playing.” This is great news for gamers who want to save some money, although we guess it does make the Deluxe Edition feel a little less special now.

That being said, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has been confirmed for a release on the 17th of November, 2017 where it will arrive on the PS4, Xbox One, and the PC.

Deadpool 2 Set For A 1st June, 2018 Release

Many fans of the first Deadpool movie are no doubt pretty excited to see if the sequel will live up to the hype. However earlier this year, it was revealed that filming had yet to begin which means that any hope of seeing it in 2017 was lost. Part of the reason why is because they were still scouting for the perfect actor to play the role of Cable.

Now as you might have heard, actor Josh Brolin was recently cast as Cable which means that filming can begin, and with that out of the way, it has been confirmed that Deadpool 2 will be seeing a release on the 1st of June, 2018 as confirmed by the movie studio 20th Century Fox. The movie will see Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as Deadpool, and will also see writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return to pen the script.

However if you recall, director Tim Miller will no longer be helming the movie and instead that role has been given to John Wick’s David Leitch. We should point out that Brolin has also been cast as Thanos in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. We know that there might be some confusion as to how one actor can play two different roles in the Marvel universe.

However due to the fact that Marvel did sell the rights of certain characters to other studios, like Spider-Man to Sony and the X-Men to Fox, while they are technically still movies and characters from Marvel, they exist in a different cinemaverse.

YouTube Workshops Will Teach Teens How To Spot Fake News

Fake news is a growing problem especially when it has the ability to mislead countries and people into making the wrong decision. So much so that in India, the government has stated that admins in WhatsApp group chats could be get in trouble should they not remove group chat members who are spreading false information.

Now platforms like Google and Facebook are doing their part in trying to curb fake news, and over in the UK, YouTube has launched a new program called “Creators for Change”. This is a workshop aimed at teens in the country where it will promote awareness, tolerance and empathy, and also how to spot fake news by learning how to check facts.

According to the workshop’s description, “Google and YouTube want a safe and exciting web where young people can be creative, express themselves and belong. We are organising workshops that walk through some vital tips and skills that can help you do this in a safe and positive way. “

The workshops will be hosted by veteran YouTube creators so if you do follow them and subscribe to their channels, then they should be some familiar faces. The first workshop kicked off on the 21st of April in Liverpool, UK, but there are plans to expand it to other youth clubs in the country over the next few months.

iPhone 8 Mass Production Could Be Delayed To October/November

We have heard reports that Apple’s iPhone 8 could see supply constraints this year, but unfortunately it looks like things could be getting much worse. According to a recent report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he revealed that Apple is expected to begin mass production of the iPhone 8 only in October/November.

This is versus the usual timeframe that we have come to expect from Apple, which is where mass production typically takes place in August/September ahead of the iPhone’s announcement and launch. According to Kuo, the reason behind the delay is due to production difficulties.

The rumors are saying that Apple’s iPhone 8 will be packing a ton of new hardware features such as OLED display, 3D laser cameras, cameras for AR/VR, and also wireless charging. Apparently these “cutting-edge” components which are custom-ordered are harder to manufacture than expected, which is why the handset’s mass production could be delayed.

Note that this is only for the iPhone 8, or iPhone Edition as some are calling it. Apple is expected to launch three models this year: the iPhone 7s, 7s Plus, and the iPhone 8, so presumably things should proceed as per usual with the “s” models, but either way take it with a grain of salt for now, but at the same time if you are considering the iPhone 8, either move quickly or be prepared to wait until next year.

Samsung Launches App For People With Language Disorders

Most of the time we probably take the fact that we can speak, read, and write for granted. However there are people in the world that suffer from illnesses that prevent them from doing that. One of those illnesses is aphasia, which is the result of an injury to the brain that makes doing all of those things difficult or impossible.

However Samsung Italia has since launched a smartphone chat app called Wemogee. This is an app designed to help those with language disorders communicate with others, and this is done through the use of emojis, which according to studies is said to become a universal visual language of the future.

According to Samsung, “Samsung Wemogee functions as a kind of translator between text and emojis. The app includes a library of more than 140 phrases related to basic needs and emotional expressions […] Through a simple and intuitive interface, aphasic patients identify what they want to communicate through a panel of visual options, sending the chosen sequence of emojis to the non-aphasic recipient. The non-aphasic user will receive the message in text form and can then reply using pre-set textual phrases.”

Basically emojis are translated into words, and words into emojis, meaning that both parties don’t need to “learn” how to chat with each other and can do so normally. The app is expected to be made available come 28th of April where it will support both English and Italian.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Could Be Unveiled At IFA 2017

When Samsung first took the wraps off the very first Galaxy Note handset, they did it at IFA. While the company still did reveal the Note series of handsets at IFA, the Note 7 in 2016 was actually revealed ahead of the event at Samsung’s own choosing. So the question is, will the Note 8 see Samsung return to IFA?

According to a report from The Korea Times, they quote IFA Executive Director Jens Heithecker who stated that he expects that Samsung will unveil the Note 8 at the event. We should point out that this seems to be just the opinion of Heithecker as opposed to a rumor or leaked information, but his reasoning makes sense.

Heithecker was quoted as saying, “My personal perspective is that IFA would be the better place (to unveil the new Note smartphone). The big advantage is that we have a lot of media and journalists from all around the world in Berlin. It is not possible to bring them all together in other cities wherever it is, in August. That’s our offer.”

Whether or not that will be happening remains to be seen, but what we do know is that Samsung has confirmed that there will be a Note 8, so the only question is when can we expect it, but either way an August/September timeframe doesn’t seem like much of a stretch.

Elgato M4 Stand now turns your iPhone into the original Mac

There is just something to Apple’s Mac design that has people reaching for it decades after it has gone extinct. No, we’re not talking about the candy iMacs but the original Macintosh. There hasn’t been a shortage of attempts to emulate that computer. There’s even an Apple Watch stand that turns it into a mini Macintosh. Appropriately, Elgato, who made … Continue reading

New Survey Shows Bernie Is Right: Young Americans Want To Reverse Runaway Inequality

A new survey conducted by the Runawayinequality.org Educational Network shows that younger Americans (ages 18-40) overwhelmingly support bold proposals to reverse inequality―- Sanders-type policies such as Medicare for all, free higher education, ending mass incarceration, wealth taxes on multi-millionaires, financial speculation taxes on Wall Street, public banks, immigrants rights, worker rights, a guaranteed job at a living wage, campaign finance reform, and a sustainable environment.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is accelerating inequality. The billionaire appointees, the Goldman Sachs economic advisors, the hollow healthcare and tax proposals all are designed to move more money into the hands of the few.

Unfortunately, the mainstream Democrats are hardly better when in comes to runaway inequality.

  • Over the last 37 years, America’s top 10 percent saw their incomes rise by 115 percent and the top 1 percent saw an incredible rise of 198 percent. Meanwhile, the bottom half of all American earners not only failed to see any gain at all, but their incomes actually declined by 1 percent from 1978 to 2015, according to research by Thomas Piketty.
  • During the Obama years “the top 1 percent of families captured 52 percent of total real income growth per family from 2009 to 2015 while the bottom 99 percent of families got only 48 percent of total real income growth,” reports inequality expert, Emanuel Saez

Most politicians and pundits throw their hands up in despair. They argue there is really nothing we can do about rising inequality because of the powerful impacts of global competition and automation. Those who are falling behind just don’t have the skills needed to prosper in the modern world. Life is unfair. Get used to it.

But these fatalists are dead wrong. There is ample evidence to show that many other nations have far less inequality but also deploy the most advanced technologies, and are even more open to foreign competition. (See here.)

Furthermore, the mainstream Democrats have convinced themselves, that despite the Sanders surge, most Americans do not support bold policies to reverse runaway inequality — too “socialistic.”

Does a social democratic program appeal to most Americans?

We decided to test the mainstream Democratic Party phobias by asking 200 randomly selected 18 to 40 year-olds to evaluate a strong platform aimed at reversing runaway inequality.

(The response choices were “Strongly Agree”, “Neutral,” “Disagree,” “Strongly Disagree.” The results below combine the “Strongly Agree/Agree” categories, and the “Strongly Disagree/Disagree” categories. Given the sample size the margin of error is a 7 percent. The survey was conducted April 20-22 via SurveyMonkey.)

The results clearly demonstrate that these younger people are more than willing to embrace bold proposals. (Please keep in mind that approximately 30 to 40 percent of these respondents were likely Trump voters.)

  • Money and Politics: The right to fair and equal representation, free from voter suppression and the influence of big money. For our democracy to endure, we must overturn Citizens United, enact public campaign financing and enforce the Voting Rights Act. Agree: 65.8%, Disagree: 5.0%

  • Medicare for All: The right to universal health care. Expand and improve Medicare (for All) to provide every American with access to quality, affordable healthcare. Agree: 75.6%, Disagree: 12.7%

  • Environmental Protection: To prevent catastrophic damage to our planet’s life support systems, we must accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy; protect our water and air from pollution; and prevent companies from moving to countries with weaker health, safety and environmental standards. Agree: 84.5%, Disagree: 4.0%

  • Job at a living wage: Everyone who is willing and able to work is entitled to a decent paying job in a safe and healthy workplace. If the private sector can’t provide such jobs, then the public sector should. Agree: 65.0%, Disagree: 20.5%

  • Free Public Education: The right to free public education from pre-K through college or trade school. Pre-K for 2- to 5-year olds should be available free of charge for all families. And everyone who qualifies for entrance to higher education should be able to attend tuition free. Agree: 72.0%, Disagree: 13.0%

  • Impartial criminal justice: Biased law enforcement in poor urban and rural communities must be ended, and we must stop using mass incarceration as a substitute for decent employment and educational opportunities. Agree: 75.1%, Disagree: 16.9%

  • Pathway to citizenship: Every resident of the US should have a comprehensive pathway to citizenship, and be afforded the rights to due process and a fair hearing that the Constitution guarantees to all. Agree: 68.2%, Disagree: 10.4%

  • Worker Rights: To protect and enhance worker rights and fairness on the job, the freedom to unionize, free from employer coercion, must be promoted. Agree: 58.6%, Disagree: 10.5%

  • Public Banks: As an alternative to Wall Street’s predatory lending, every state should charter a public bank, modeled on the Bank of North Dakota, whose first and only goal is to serve its people. Also, like many other developed nations, the US should charter a national postal bank to provide fair and accessible financial services in all our communities. Agree: 59.0%, Disagree: 9.5%

  • Taxing Wall Street: To move money to Main Street, a small sales tax should be imposed on stocks, bonds and derivatives. This also would discourage high frequency computer trades which make up the majority of all stock market activity. Agree: 49.0, Disagree: 10.7%

  • End Stock Manipulation: CEOs and their Wall Street partners should not be permitted to enrich themselves by using corporate funds to buy back their own shares in order to artificially raise share prices. This was illegal before 1982 and should be again. Agree: 71.5%, Disagree: 6.5%

  • Wealth Tax of 1% on those whose net worth is over $10 million: Those who have grown super-rich in our financialized economy must pay their fair share of taxes. A wealth tax, currently used by Spain, France, Switzerland and Norway, is an excellent way to recoup those losses. Agree: 72.1%, Disagree: 10.1%

What will it take to wake up the Corporate Democrats?

The Democratic Party is trying to move “economic issues” into their core message. That’s not good enough. As we see from our survey, younger Americans in particular are hungry for more than platitudes about economic opportunity, public-private partnerships, reduced tuition loans and other half measures.

What the Democrats are offering can be co-opted by Trump’s faux populism. But a strong agenda to reverse runaway inequality cannot.

Rather than embrace these proposals mainstream Democrats are likely to reject our survey because it doesn’t jive with the milquetoast questions posed by their high-priced pollsters, and because it challenges their cozy relationships with Wall Street and corporate elites.

But we can’t afford to sit around and moan this sorry state of affairs. Millions are in motion and eager to get more involved. We need to break through the false narratives and continue to prove that Americans want a much fairer society.

For starters, we could turn this agenda into a circulating petition, get 20 million or so to sign it, and then shove it in the face of every politician. Then maybe, just maybe, we’ll see growing support for real policies to reverse runaway inequality.

Actress Amber Heard and billionaire Elon Musk have taken their relationship to the next level ― showing off their togetherness on Instagram.

On Sunday, the two both posted photos of a cozy moment ― complete with cutesy captions ― at restaurant Moo Moo on the Gold Coast of Australia.

Her arm cradled on Musk’s shoulder and a lipstick kiss clearly visible on his left cheek, Heard went with a one-word punchline: “Cheeky.”

Heard is reportedly in Australia to film “Aquaman.” The two were spotted earlier in the day ziplining and walking arm-in-arm at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, People noted.

Last summer the two were already reportedly “hanging out,” but perhaps their social media sharing confirmed that the romance is more than just that.

Heard’s nasty divorce from Johnny Depp became final in January while Musk, the Tesla co-founder who has six children, reportedly settled his divorce from Talulah Riley in 2016, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
