North Korea Detains U.S. Citizen: Yonhap News Agency

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea detained a U.S. citizen on Friday, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported, bringing the total number of Americans held by the isolated country to three.

The man, a Korean-American in his fifties identified only by his surname Kim, had been in North Korea for a month to discuss relief activities, Yonhap said on Sunday. He was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport on his way out of the country.

The man was a former professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology (YUST), Yonhap said, citing unnamed sources. YUST, a university in neighboring China, has a sister university in Pyongyang.

An official at South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said it was not aware of the reported arrest. Calls to YUST went unanswered.

North Korea, which has been criticized for its human rights record, has in the past used detained Americans to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations.

North Korea was already holding two Americans.

Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old student, was detained in January last year and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by a North Korean court for attempting to steal a propaganda banner.

In March 2016, Korean-American Kim Dong Chul, 62, was sentenced to 10 years hard labor for subversion.

U.S. missionary Kenneth Bae was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 15 years hard labor for crimes against the state.

He was released two years later.

France Votes In First Round Of Presidential Election

By Ingrid Melander

PARIS (Reuters) – France voted on Sunday in the first round of a bitterly fought presidential election that is crucial to the future of Europe and a closely-watched test of voters’ anger with the political establishment.

Over 50,000 police backed by elite units of the French security services patrolled the streets less than three days after a suspected Islamist gunman shot dead a policeman and wounded two others on the central Champs Elysees avenue.

Voters will decide whether to back a pro-EU centrist newcomer, a scandal-ridden veteran conservative who wants to slash public spending, a far-left eurosceptic admirer of Fidel Castro or to appoint France’s first woman president who would shut borders and ditch the euro.

The outcome will show whether the populist tide that saw Britain vote to leave the EU and Donald Trump’s election in the United States is still rising, or starting to ebb. A high level of indecision adds to nervousness.

Hanan Fanidi, a 33-year-old financial project manager, was still unsure as she arrived at a polling station in Paris’ 18th arrondissement.

“I don’t believe in anyone, actually. I haven’t arrived at a candidate in particular who could advance things. I’m very, very pessimistic,” she said.

Emmanuel Macron, 39, a centrist ex-banker who set up his party just a year ago, is the opinion polls’ favorite to win the first round and beat far-right National Front chief Marine Le Pen in the two-person run-off on May 7.

For them to win the top two qualifying positions on Sunday would represent a huge change in the political landscape. The second round would then feature neither of the mainstream parties that have governed France for decades.

But conservative Francois Fillon is making a comeback after being plagued for months by a fake jobs scandal, and leftist Jean-Luc Melenchon’s ratings have surged in recent weeks. Any two of the four has a chance to qualify for the run-off.

“It wouldn’t be the classic left versus right divide but two views of the world clashing,” said Ifop pollsters’ Jerome Fourquet. “Macron bills himself as the progressive versus conservatives, Le Pen as the patriot versus the globalists.”

The seven other candidates, including the ruling Socialist party’s Benoit Hamon lag behind in opinion polls.

By noon (6.00 a.m. ET), turnout amid sunshine and clear skies across much of France was 28.54 percent, according to official figures – around the same as in the 2012 first round, in which almost 80 percent eventually took part.

Some polls had been predicting a much lower turnout, closer to the 70 percent that took the then National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen into the second round in 2002. Pollsters are unclear about what a low or high turnout could mean in 2017.

President Francois Hollande and his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy have failed through both of the past two five-year presidencies to tackle the high unemployment and sluggish growth.

That issue, and the general trustworthiness of politicians, stands out, polls say, even though security has re-entered the debate since Thursday’s killing of a policeman.

Some argue the incident increases Le Pen’s chances; but previous militant attacks, such as the November 2015 killing of 130 people in Paris ahead of regional polls, have not appeared to have any impact on votes.

Earlier on Sunday a polling station in Besancon, eastern France was evacuated after a stolen vehicle was abandoned with the engine running while voting took place.

”CHEERING MADLY”?

The possibility of a Le Pen-Melenchon run-off is not the most likely scenario but is one which alarms bankers and investors.

While Macron wants to further beef up the euro zone, Le Pen has told supporters “the EU will die”. She wants to return to the Franc, re-denominate the country’s debt stock, tax imports and reject international treaties.

Melenchon also wants to radically overhaul the European Union and hold a referendum on whether to leave the bloc.

Le Pen or Melenchon would struggle, in parliamentary elections in June, to win a majority to carry out such radical moves, but their growing popularity also worries France’s EU partners.

“It is no secret that we will not be cheering madly should Sunday’s result produce a second round between Le Pen and Melenchon,” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said.

If either Macron or Fillon were victorious, each would face challenges.

For Macron, a big question would be whether he could win a majority in parliament in June. Fillon, though likely to struggle less to get a majority, would likely be dogged by an embezzlement scandal, in which he denies wrongdoing.

Pinterest Will Be Killing Off Its ‘Like’ Button

The Like button has become pretty ubiquitous these days, where it provides users with a quick way to show their appreciation for a post or item they see online. However in an interesting move, it seems that Pinterest has decided that they will be removing the feature from its website.

According to Pinterest, it seems that one of the reasons why they’re removing the feature is because they say that users are confused between the Like and Save buttons, where liking a pin simply shows your interest or appreciation, but saving a pin means that it’s something you can always go back to in the future.

A statement sent to Recode also hinted that Pinterest wanted to set itself apart from the competition, such as Facebook and Instagram. The statement reads, “While other companies want you to live in a virtual world, Pinterest encourages people to live in the real world. We like to say, be yourself and not your selfie. There are many services out there with the mission of helping you connect and share with friends; we’re the one app exclusively in the visual discovery business.”

The change won’t be coming into effect immediately as Pinterest will be making the changes over the course of the next few weeks. For those who have liked pins thinking that they were saves, not to worry as Pinterest will be saving pins users liked into a separate private pin board so that you can always go back to them at a later date.

These Smart Glasses Can Refocus On What You’re Looking At

The human body is a wonderment and it’s usually only when it’s too late that we can appreciate what it does for us. For example did you know your eye’s natural lens will automatically focus on whatever you’re looking at? We suppose it might be obvious, but it’s not really something we think about.

However trying to replicate this with glasses can be tricky, but scientists have recently managed to develop a pair of smart glasses that can automatically refocus on whatever the wearer is viewing, thus mimicking the eye’s natural lens. The idea is that eventually we could do away with the need for glasses with different types of lenses, like bifocals or trifocals.

These liquid lenses are mounted onto a frame that has an electromechanical system that causes the membrane to bend and adjust their focus. However the glasses determine where the user is looking is through a sensor that is mounted in the bridge of the glasses that uses pulses of infrared light to not only see where the wearer is looking, but also the precise distance. From there an algorithm is used to instantly adjust the lens to allow the wearer to focus on what they are looking at.

This chance is said to take only 14 milliseconds which is 25 seconds faster than it takes for you to blind your eye. This means that in the future, a single pair of glasses might be all you need for most sight-related problems you might have.

Researchers Use Wearables To Predict When Couples Start Arguing

People argue with each other all the time, whether you’re friends, family, or partners. Heck even strangers get into arguments with each other. However what if you could predict when an argument is about to break out? If you could, do you think you could work towards preventing it or acting in a way that doesn’t let it get blown out of proportion?

This is something that researchers at the University of Southern California are looking into, and they are using none other than wearable gadgets to help them make their predictions. How this works is that researchers gave couples a wearable that can track biodata like body temperature, heart activity, and sweat. Participants in the research were also required to log their feelings towards their partner every hour, which also measured things like content and intensity of speech.

After that through the use of machine learning, researchers were able to capture moments of  conflicts with an accuracy rating as high as 86%. According to the researchers, the next step in the process would be to create a model that could predict conflicts up to five minutes before they occur, which in turn could allow device makers to focus not just on physical health, but emotional health as well.

Speaking to TechCrunch, the study’s co-author Theodora Chaspari said, “The fact that we are capturing bio-signals from wearables – this is a source of information we can get from people that we cannot see with the naked eye. It was a pretty useful source of information.”

Drones Used To Study Bats To Learn In-Flight ‘Secrets’

So we’ve seen how drones can be used for photography, videography, even used to provide internet, and now it seems that drones have found a use in the study of animals. A pair of researchers have used drones in a bid to better learn about the behavior of bats while they’re in-flight that go beyond traditional ground-based monitoring tactics.

It seems that what bats get up to while they are in-flight is still something of a mystery to scientists, according to ecologist Kate Jones from the University College London. Jones claims that traditional ground monitoring tactics might not paint a full picture. “We’re monitoring on the ground and thinking that’s representative of the entire air column – but I don’t think that’s true.”

However with these drones that are built by Tom Moore who works alongside bat enthusiast Tom August, these drones can fly a pre-planned route and can pick up bat calls via an ultrasonic transmitter. Due to the fact that these drones can fly at higher altitudes, it is possible that the data captured could give a more detailed picture of how bats move around.

It could also be used for environmental surveys where the drones can help determine if placing wind turbines in certain areas might interfere with the environments of bats, as it has been found that wind turbines have been linked to the death of bats.
