Antarctic Researchers Face Bitter Cold To Support The March For Science

Some demonstrators who came out for the March for Science protests faced rain and sloppy weather. Others faced elements much more severe.

A team of German researchers showed their support for the pro-science protests held across the U.S. by enduring below freezing temperatures outside of their research lab in Antarctica on Saturday.

The researchers, who are with the Alfred Wegener Institute, are spending the upcoming Antarctic winter at the institute’s Neumayer III research station. They took the photo below as a show of solidarity with protestors around the world and included a sign with a quote by Marie Curie, the Pulitzer Prize-winning chemist who discovered the elements radium and polonium.

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more so that we may fear less.”

AWI serves as a year-round lab where researchers observe climate changes and study meteorology and atmospheric chemistry.

Scientists with the AWI also joined the demonstration from several other locations, including their research vessel Polarstern at Bremerhaven, Germany, from their larger research vessel Heincke and from their French-German research base in the Arctic.

Karin Lochte, the director of the institute and a climate change specialist, spoke out against manipulative anti-science “populist movements” in a statement announcing their support for the March for Science protests.

“In numerous countries around the globe, populist movements are currently manipulating the facts to support their own views and goals,” Lochte said. “’Undesirable’ research is being hampered and good science is being called into question ― a trend that could seriously jeopardize important achievements like the Paris Agreement.”

Lochte said that “when scientific findings are disputed at higher influential political levels,” it may lead to the public losing faith in science altogether.

AWI research, which has shown that climate change is impacting the Arctic and Antarctic, is especially in danger.

“These are the facts that we have to take seriously,” Lochte said. “It is vital that the scientific community remains a dependable, trustworthy and independent source of information to guide many of society’s most important decisions.”

“That’s something we all have to fight for,” she added. “As researchers and as citizens.”

Grizzlies Evens Series With Spurs Despite Kawhi Leonard's Stellar Performance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ― Kawhi Leonard was making everything, scoring San Antonio’s last 16 points in the fourth quarter and finishing with a career-high 43 points.

The Spurs’ young star hit 7 of 10 shots from 3-point range, made one-legged, fade-away jumpers and put his team on his back while scoring eight of their 12 points in overtime.

It still wasn’t enough.

In the end, it was Marc Gasol’s floating jumper over LaMarcus Aldridge with 0.7 seconds left in overtime that gave the Memphis Grizzlies a 110-108 victory over the Spurs on Saturday night at FedExForum to even their first-round Western Conference playoff series at 2-2.

“(Gasol) made the play that mattered,” said Mike Conley, who led Memphis with a postseason franchise record 35 points and had nine rebounds and eight assists. “It’s scary as hell watching (Leonard). He was unbelievable.”

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said the same of the game.

“Both teams played their hearts out,” he said. “Just a fantastic basketball game. The fans got their money’s worth. Marc made a great shot. L.A. (Aldridge) contested it very well; it (went) down.”

But one key shot right at the rim did not go down. With 1:36 left in overtime and the Spurs up 102-100, Spurs guard Tony Parker stole a pass from Conley and had a fastbreak with Patty Mills. But as Mills went in for what looked like a sure layup and a four-point lead, Grizzlies rookie guard Andrew Harrison blocked him from behind.

That started a fastbreak the other way that ended with a Gasol layup, a foul by David Lee, and a Gasol free throw for a 103-102 Memphis lead.

“That was the play of the game, other than Marc’s,” Conley said. “For a young guy to make a play like that, that’s a five-point swing. We gave it up for him in the locker room, that’s for sure.”

Said Harrison, who also had seven points and three rebounds: “I just didn’t want to give up on the play. I thought I had a chance to hit the ball and I did.”

Leonard added eight rebounds, six steals and three assists to his stat line and his fade-away jumper with 12 seconds left in regulation gave San Antonio a 96-94 lead.

But Conley, who had 11 points in the fourth, answered with a floater in the lane with 4.5 seconds left to tie the game at 96. Leonard then missed a contested 21-footer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

It was a rare miss in the fourth quarter and overtime, where Leonard was 8-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-6 from distance.

“Honestly, I’m taking suggestions on how to guard Kawhi Leonard,” Memphis coach David Fizdale said. “I’ve tried everything and the guy is just tough. Man, is he a superstar.”

The Grizzlies overcame 23 turnovers that translated into 31 San Antonio points.

“You just got to keep playing,” said Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph, who had 12 points and 11 rebounds. “You got to go on to the next play, and the next play after that.”

Gasol finished with 16 points, 12 rebounds and four assists; he also committed seven turnovers. JaMychal Green had 14 points off the bench.

Parker had 22 points and five assists for San Antonio. Aldridge scored 13 points.

The Spurs shot 42.3 percent from the floor and went 9-for-30 from 3-point range (30 percent). Memphis shot 46.3 percent from the field while going 12-for-27 from distance (44.4 percent).

The Spurs had a 10-point lead in the first quarter and an opportunity to take away the Grizzlies’ hope. But passing that first test set Memphis up for all the others that would follow.

“I learned a long time ago if you don’t have mental stability when they punch you in the mouth, you’re in the wrong business,” Fizdale said.

“I thought we played well enough to win the game,” Parker said, and then looking ahead to Game 5 in San Antonio: “It’s a must-win situation for us now.”

Conley says the Grizzlies view Game 5 the same way.

“Of course, we’re in desperation mode,” he said. “According to the media, we were supposed to be swept anyway.”

NOTES: The Grizzlies’ Game 3 victory on Thursday night snapped the Spurs’ 10-game postseason winning streak over Memphis. The Grizzlies had not defeated the Spurs since Game 6 of their first-round series in 2011 when Memphis became just the second No. 8 seed in NBA history to eliminate a No. 1 seed. … Spurs C Dewayne Dedmon missed Game 4 with an illness. David Lee started in his place. … Memphis SG Vince Carter (13 points) became the first 40-year-old to make at least three triples in a playoff game, going 3-for-5 from long range.

WhatsApp Update Now Lets Siri Read Your Latest Messages

One of changes that Apple made with iOS 10 is opening up Siri to third-party developers. Prior to this, one could say that Siri was a bit limited and restrictive in its functionality, but presumably Apple saw how successful Amazon was with Alexa that they decided that maybe they should follow suit.

Now the good news is that if you’re a heavy WhatsApp user, you’ll be pleased to learn that you can now use Siri to read your latest WhatsApp messages. This is thanks to the latest update to WhatsApp in which the app will now let users ask Siri to read their messages to them which will come in handy if you’re driving or if your hands are full.

If you use newer iPhones like the iPhone 6s or better, you can actually enable “Hey Siri” functionality where you don’t need to touch your phone to enable it (and it doesn’t require users to have their phones plugged into a charger either). In addition to Siri integration, the latest update to the app will also introduce some changes like selecting multiple statuses at once and forward/revoke them.

Two-step verification has also been updated and redesigned to make it easier to setup, and the overall interface for group/individual chats has also been changed to make it cleaner and easier to use. You’ll be able to grab the latest version of WhatsApp from the iTunes App Store if you haven’t updated already.

Call Of Duty: WW2 Campaign And Multiplayer Details Leaked

Following a couple of leaks and rumors, Activision has recently confirmed that the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise will indeed be based around World War 2 (which has been done before, so it’ll be interesting to see how they will approach this particular installment).

The official reveal has been set for the 26th of April which is next week, but thanks to a leaked advertisement it seems that some details regarding the game’s campaign and multiplayer have been revealed ahead of time. With the campaign, the ad says that it will be based on “the story of an unbreakable brother of common men fighting to preserve freedom in a world on the brink of tyranny.”

The multiplayer details includes the maps that gamers can expect which are based on well-known locations of World War 2 battles. It also says that there will be “exciting new ways to interact and socialize with their friends and the Call of Duty community.” If the ad is accurate, it also looks like customers who pre-order the game will be able to take part in a private beta.

In any case take it with a grain of salt but like we said, the official details will be revealed next week on the 26th of April, so check back with us then if you’d like to find out more about the next Call of Duty title.

RIAA Sues ISP For Not Disconnecting Pirates

If you have ever downloaded anything illegally before via torrents like a movie or music, you may or may not have received an email from your ISP warning you that your IP address has been detected downloading copyrighted material. However usually this is as far as it goes as the legal stuff is typically handled by the copyright owner, like movie studios or record labels.

Unfortunately these letters of warning aren’t enough for the RIAA because the organization has since filed a lawsuit against ISP Grande Communications in which they allege that the ISP did not do enough to discourage pirates, such as disconnecting them from using their internet services.

The lawsuit reads, “Defendants have been notified that their internet customers have engaged in more than one million infringements of copyrighted works over BitTorrent systems, including tens of thousands of blatant infringements by repeat infringers of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works. Despite their knowledge of repeat infringements, Defendants have permitted repeat infringers to use the Grande service to continue to infringe Plaintiffs’ copyrights without consequence.”

The RIAA is also seeking statutory damages which could go up to as much as $150,000 per infringed work, actual damages, plus profits generated by the ISP as a result of the infringement. Grande could be in trouble because if you recall, there was a similar case back in 2015 involving Cox Communications, where a federal jury ruled that ISPs could be held liable for their users’ piracy.

WhatsApp Group Chat Admins Could Get In Trouble Over Fake News

Being an admin in a WhatsApp chat is for many not a big deal. Basically it allows you to add or remove people from the group. However over in India, being a WhatsApp admin of a group chat could soon mean more responsibility. In a report from the Economic Times (via CNET), the Indian government wants to make WhatsApp admins more accountable.

According to a ruling by an Indian magistrate, WhatsApp group admins could be held liable for factually incorrect or fake news that is being shared within the group, which could in turn lead to a report to the police against the group’s administrator. The goal of this is to help curb the spread of false information.

The ruling states that admins are responsible to remove members in the group that were found to have been spreading the false information, and failure to do so could potentially result in action being taken against them. Given how some are claiming that the spread of fake news impacted the US presidential elections, it is not surprising that more governments are looking to crack down on it.

Recently it was also reported that France was being flooded with fake news created by automated accounts ahead of the country’s elections.

BlackBerry KEYone Delayed Further In The UK

Announced earlier this year at MWC 2017, the BlackBerry KEYone is the company’s latest handset that is meant to appeal to BlackBerry loyalists and fans who miss the company’s QWERTY devices. Unfortunately last month it was reported that the handset’s release would be delayed to early May, but over in the UK customers might have to wait longer.

According to reports, it seems that UK retailer Clove has stated on its website (via PhoneArena) that the KEYone would be shipping out to customers on the 22nd of May instead of the 5th of May which was what we had previously thought. It is unclear why there is a delay, but oddly enough another UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has listed that the phone will still be shipped on the 5th of May.

It is possible that maybe Carphone Warehouse managed to strike up a better deal with TCL (the company making the phone) and might have gotten some units ahead of Clove, but either way if you want the handset in the next couple of weeks and not have to wait an entire month, then we guess Carphone Warehouse will be your best bet.

For our readers in the US, it looks like the handset’s availability is still on track for the 5th of May so you can rest assured that things appear to be still on track.

Man Believes His Video Game Addiction Led To His Divorce

In the past we have seen how some gamers who are so addicted to gaming have resulted in them neglecting their own children, where in some unfortunate cases babies have died either due to frustration being taken out on them, or because they were not fed. If you think that we would have learnt something from all of this by now, it doesn’t really seem to be the case.

Over in Japan a TV show called Ie, Tsuite Itte Ii Desuka? followed a man by the name Kaccho home where he agreed to let them film the show inside of his apartment. It was then noticed that his home was filled with merchandise from the game Dragon Quest, and in the process of explaining his collection, Kaccho revealed that he got divorced four years ago, which he believes could have been the result of his addiction to the game.

He says his wife has since left him and taken their daughter. He also tried to get custody of her but failed to do so. It also seems that he has since lost contact with either of them, but he also hasn’t tried very hard to try and get in touch. However he has created a character within the game that is created after his daughter.

When the cameraman asks if his daughter could still be playing the game, Kaccho replied that it might be possible, and that maybe they could somehow find each other and meet up in the virtual world.

Bill Nye Slams CNN For Putting Climate Change Skeptic On Earth Day Panel

Bill Nye will gladly talk to the media about climate change, but he has no time for climate change skeptics.

The celebrity scientist slammed CNN’s “New Day” on Saturday for including William Happer ― a physicist who thinks carbon pollution is a myth and once compared carbon dioxide to the suffering of Jewish people during the Holocaust ― in an Earth Day panel on the March for Science protests.

When asked about Happer’s skepticism, Nye answered by providing Happer with a few facts about the rising rates of atmospheric CO2, but not before scolding the hosts for doing a “disservice” to their viewers.

“I will say, as much as I love the CNN, you’re doing a disservice by having one climate change skeptic, and not 97 or 98 scientists or engineers concerned about climate change,” Nye said, referring to the widespread consensus among scientists that climate change is real and caused in part by human-induced increases in carbon dioxide.

Happer, a professor at Princeton, had earlier stated that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant.

“There’s this myth that’s developed around carbon dioxide that it’s a pollutant,” Happer said. “But you and I both exhale carbon dioxide with every breath. Each of us emits about two pounds of carbon dioxide a day so are we polluting the planet?”

Nye pointed out to Happer that the amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is rising at a record rate, according to data released this year by the Environmental System Research Laboratory.

“What he claims to not understand is the rate. It’s the speed at which we’re adding carbon dioxide,” Nye said of Happer’s skepticism. “What you got to get is the speed at which things are changing.”

Happer later pressed Nye on climate change, saying that Earth’s “temperature is not rising nearly as fast as the alarmists’ computer models predicted.” He added: “The whole basis for the alarmism is not true. It’s based on flawed computer modeling.”

To which Nye swiftly replied, “That’s completely wrong. Say what you will, but you have it absolutely wrong.”

In the past, Happer has argued that global warming and an increase in carbon dioxide is “good for mankind.” He’s also compared “the demonization of carbon dioxide” to the “demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler.” Rumors that Happer was being considered for the role of President Donald Trump’s science advisor spread after the climate change skeptic met with Trump in January.

During Saturday’s panel, Nye offered Happer a bit of advice.

“Sir, with some respect,” Nye said. “I encourage you to cut this out so that we can all move forward and make the United States a world leader in technology.”
