Furious South Koreans Blast 'Ignorant' Trump For 'Distortion Of History'

Many in South Korea are steamed at President Donald Trump for saying their nation was once “part of China.”

Trump told The Wall Street Journal that Chinese President Xi Jinping gave him a history lesson during their meeting earlier this month, which gave him a new appreciation of the difficulties of defusing the situation in North Korea

“And, you know, you’re talking about thousands of years … and many wars,” Trump was quoted as saying April 12. “And Korea actually used to be a part of China. And after listening for 10 minutes, I realized that it’s not so easy.”

But South Koreans say their nation was never part of China.

Arirang News, in the video above, called Trump’s remarks “ignorant” and quoted a government official as saying the comments are “clearly not true and not even worthy of response.”

The nation’s politicians are also making it clear what they think of the American president’s comments.

“The 50 million South Koreans, as well as many common-sensical people around the world, cannot help but feel embarrassed and shocked,” Youn Kwan-suk, spokesman of the main opposition Democratic Party, told The New York Times.

“This is clearly a distortion of history and an invasion of the Republic of Korea’s sovereignty,” Hong Joon-pyo, a conservative Liberal Korea Party candidate, said through a spokesman, according to The Hill.

“It’s a clear fact acknowledged by the international community that, for thousands of years in history, Korea has never been part of China,” foreign ministry spokesman Cho June-hyuck said at a briefing, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.

The newspaper said that since Trump and Xi spoke through interpreters, it’s possible something was lost in translation.

But if it wasn’t, there could be problems with China as well.

“If President Xi really did make such a remark, the Korean public would react sensitively, and because it is a historical issue, the government would need to take stern action,” a diplomatic source was quoted as saying.

The Washington Post reported that a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry didn’t clarify Xi’s comments but said, “There is nothing for South Koreans to worry about.”

Cuba Gooding Sr., R&B Soul Singer, Dead At 72

Cuba Gooding Sr., famed soul singer and father of the Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr., was found dead in a car in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, according to TMZ.

The singer was 72 years old, with a birthday next week.

Gooding was found in a silver Jaguar parked on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, law enforcement officials said. The vehicle was reportedly registered to Cuba Gooding Jr. and wife, Shirley Gooding, according to KTLA 5.

Los Angeles police Capt. Paul Vernon said on Twitter that the cause of death hasn’t been determined, but it appears to be a “non-homicidal death.” Alcohol containers and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle, according to officials. The LA County coroner’s office said it was awaiting results of toxicology tests.

After serving as the backup vocals, Gooding Sr. became the the lead singer of the popular R&B group The Main Ingredient in 1971, according to Billboard. The group went on to release several hit songs, including, “Everybody Plays the Fool,” which rose to No. 2 on Billboard’s R&B chart, and No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart.

Gooding went solo and signed with Motown Records in 1977. He released two albums, which included the hit “Mind Pleaser,” before rejoining The Main Ingredient in 1979.

The singer was married to Shirley Gooding, with whom he had four children: actors Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omar Gooding; musician Tommy Gooding; and April Gooding.

Marlin GPS Swim Meter With Underwater Voice Feedback

Built for swimmers who want to focus on their swimming instead of looking at their smartphones or smartwatches, the Marlin GPS Swim Meter is a hands-free, display-free wearable coach that keeps track of position/distance and speed. This is one of the startups I met at the Global Sources Startup Launchpad in Hong Kong.

Created by the Platyens startup, Marlin differentiates itself from existing bands and smartwatches because it is hyper-specialized in swimming. Created by a hardcore swimmer, Marlin attaches itself to the swim goggles band at the back of the head. From there, it can receive a clear GPS signal (unless you swim facing up), while wearables worn on the wrist will be plunged underwater half of the time, possibly making it hard to get a continuous signal.

A bone-conduction sound system also attaches to the swim goggles band, near the ear. Voice is how Marlin will communicate to the user, the latest swim statistics or directions. Bone-conduction is a proven audio transmission method that doesn’t rely on airwaves to reach the inner ear. It is particularly fit for underwater use because the sound quality should be more predictable and consistent when compared to waterproof earbuds.

Marlin’s voice feedback is to the point; it will let the user know what the speed or last lap time was, for example. In open waters, it is possible to plan a specific path with the Marlin app and a map. As the user swim, Marlin can detect a deviation from the planned path and will tell the swimmer to change directions. Marlin does not require the swimmer to have the smartphone during training.

Some people may point out that it could be possible to attach a smartwatch at the same location, and that’s true, but most watch apps have been designed to be interacted with using the screen. Also, the bone-conduction audio makes a world of difference. Obviously, it’s possible to hack something with a watch, but given that Marlin costs about half the price of a smartwatch, the gain in user experience may simply be worth it.

Class-Action Lawsuit Filed Against Google & Huawei Over Nexus 6P

The other day we reported that a lawsuit was being considered against Google and Huawei over the Nexus 6P’s bootloop issues. Turns out that the law firm that was investigating the case was decided to proceed with the lawsuit and has since officially announced (via Android Central) that they have filed a class-action lawsuit against both companies.

According to the press release put out by Chimicles & Tikellis, “The complaint alleges that Google tells consumers to seek warranty coverage from Huawei for this issue and that Huawei is largely unhelpful and often stonewalls attempts to obtain warranty coverage, telling consumers the problem is not the phone or the battery, but instead it is a problem with Google’s software.”

Basically it sounds like because neither Google nor Huawei were allegedly helpful when trying to find a solution to the problem, that customers got frustrated and thus the lawsuit was filed. If you might recall, LG is also facing a similar lawsuit where the issue customers are having with the company aren’t so much the problem with the phone, but the supposed unhelpfulness when approached.

Neither LG, Google, nor Huawei have commented on the lawsuits, although in LG’s case the company had previously offered Nexus 5X customers full refunds. For those who are interested in checking out the full complaint can do so here.

Google Home Now Supports Multiple Users

The other day it was reported that Google Home could soon be getting support for multiple users. Google did not mention when exactly we can expect the feature, but as it turns out we didn’t have to wait too long because in a blog post, Google has confirmed that the feature is now available to Google Home users.

According to Google, “Starting today, I can—and so can you. We’re adding the ability for up to six people to connect their account to one Google Home. So now when I ask my Google Assistant for help, it can distinguish my voice from my wife’s and I can hear my own personal playlists, my own commute time, my own schedule and more.”

How it works is that Google Home will identify users by their voice to know who they are and what their preferences are so as to offer up a more personalized experience. This is done when users connect their account on a Google Home device, after which they will be asked to say a couple of phrases which are then analyzed by a neural network to detect characteristics in a person’s voice to determine who they are.

Once that’s done, Google Home should have no problems distinguishing between its users. The feature is expected to be made available to users in the US first, but it is expected to eventually expand to the UK in the coming months.

The X-Files Will Return To Fox For Another Season

The X-Files is considered by many to be one of the classic TV shows in history, which is why many were very excited when the show made a mini return last year for what was officially known as Season 10 in a six episode run. It was short and sweet but it definitely left fans wanting more.

The good news is that Fox has decided to oblige because the network has since announced and confirmed that the TV series will be returning for Season 11. The best part is that unlike Season 10 which some felt was a bit short, Season 11 will run for 10-episodes. Granted it isn’t a “full” season compared to the previous seasons, but hey, we’ll take what we can get.

According to David Madden, president of Fox, “Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

No specific dates on when the latest season will air, but production is expected to begin in the summer and will begin airing sometime during the 2017-2018 season. Both the show’s leads Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have since taken to Twitter to confirm the news.

Ranked DotA 2 Matches Will Require A Phone Number

In the future if you plan on taking part in ranked DotA 2 matchmaking games, you will need to attach a phone number of your account. This is according to a recent update posted on the DotA 2 website where users will have to link a unique phone number to their account in order to be able to queue for Ranked matches.

According to Valve, “Players using multiple accounts create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets, so our goal is to add just enough friction to this process that the number of players doing this will be noticeably reduced. Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking.”

Basically there is a problem with regards to “smurfing”, where players create secondary accounts to play ranked DotA 2 matches on. This means that these players are free to do as they wish because it would not be their main account, which means that they can quit halfway or just screw up on purpose and it won’t have an impact on them as they probably wouldn’t care quite as much.

Valve writes, “There will be a two-week grace period from today during which players have time to register a number, but starting on May 4th, accounts without a registered number will no longer be eligible for Ranked play.”

Another Potentially Habitable 'Super-Earth' Is Discovered

It seems like only yesterday when scientists announced the discovery of yet another “super-Earth.” Last year, a half-lava, half-rock world, dubbed 55 Cancri e, was found around 40 light-years from Earth and was determined to be twice the size of our home planet.

And now it has happened again.

Researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) have announced the discovery of a new super-Earth, designated LHS 1140b, orbiting the habitable zone of a small red dwarf star, LHS 1140, about 39 light-years away. (It’s 4.2 light-years from our sun to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri.)

“This is the most exciting exoplanet I’ve seen in the past decade,” Jason Dittmann, a postdoctoral fellow, said in a CfA statement. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science ― searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.”

Dittmann is the lead author of a paper appearing in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature, which states:

Here we report observations of LHS 1140b. … We measure the mass of the planet to be 6.6 times that of Earth, consistent with a rocky bulk composition, placing it within the liquid-water, habitable zone. Because LHS 1140 is nearby, telescopes currently under construction might be able to search for specific atmospheric gases in the future.

LHS 1140b was found by the transit method, in which a star’s light dims when a planet crosses, or transits, in front of it as seen by Earth-bound instruments. The research team estimates the planet is about 11,000 miles in diameter.

The MEarth-South telescope array in Chile detected LHS 1140b. The eight-telescope lineup studies faint red dwarf stars to detect orbiting planets as they transit their stars.

“Right now, we’re just making educated guesses about the content of this planet’s atmosphere,” said Dittmann. “Future observations might enable us to detect the atmosphere of a potentially habitable planet for the first time. We plan to search for water and, ultimately, molecular oxygen.”

With thousands of planets now confirmed, each day we get a little closer to that futuristic “Star Trek” mission credo “to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before.”
