Trump Tax Plan To Rely On Future U.S. Growth To Fund Cuts: Officials

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tax reform plan will rely largely on future revenue gains from faster economic growth to justify major tax cuts, top Trump advisers said on Thursday.

As Trump’s first 100 days in office draw to a close, the disclosure is the latest sign that the White House could part ways with congressional Republicans who want to pay for tax cuts by taxing imports and eliminating a business tax deduction for debt interest payments.

“Some of the lowering in (tax) rates is going to be offset by less deductions and simpler taxes,” Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said in a question-and-answer session on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings in Washington.

“But the majority of it will be made up by what we believe is fundamentally growth and dynamic scoring,” he added.

Dynamic scoring is a little-known government forecasting method that uses economic modeling to predict changes in revenues resulting from economic growth spurred by new tax and economic policies.

Republicans believe major tax reform would drive annual U.S. economic growth above 3 percent. But if anticipated improvement fails to materialize, the strategy could rob the Treasury of tax revenue and saddle the economy with bigger deficits and higher debt burdens.

Mnuchin said dynamic scoring could give Trump and Congress a $2 trillion revenue cushion for the first major overhaul of the U.S. tax code since 1986.

Gary Cohn, director of Trump’s National Economic Council, told the same gathering that dynamic scoring would help avoid deficit-funded tax cuts that could not be made permanent under Senate fiscal rules.

“Using dynamic scoring may allow us to get to a permanent solution,” Cohn said. “We would like a permanent solution.”

A congressional tax plan backed by House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan would raise over $2 trillion with a border adjustment proposal to tax imports while exempting exports from taxation, and by eliminating net interest deductions for businesses. But both measures have fierce opponents among businesses and Republican lawmakers.

Mnuchin said border adjustment could hurt U.S. exports by driving the dollar higher, or fuel consumer inflation if the dollar does not rise.

The administration’s goal is to unveil a plan soon that can quickly pass the House and Senate.

“This won’t take ‘til the end of the year,” Mnuchin said. “It will be sweeping, it will be significant and it will create a lot of economic growth.”

Miley Cyrus Is Apparently Secretly In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2'

You can’t stop and you won’t stop “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.”

The movie is already getting a ton of positive buzz from screenings, and now some breaking news is coming in like a wrecking ball: Miley Cyrus is supposedly secretly in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel.

The tidbit was first tweeted out by blogger Sarah Ruhlman, who was at the Los Angeles press junket for the movie.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, confirmed Cyrus has role in the film, saying, “I heard that she’s uncredited and a voice somewhere.” He couldn’t remember the details but added, “I know I’ve heard that.”

According to Ruhlman’s tweet, Cyrus is the voice of Mainframe. In the comics, Mainframe is an evolved technology that’s actually an alternative version of Vision. DenOfGeek explains Mainframe’s history:

In the Guardians future, the Vision had evolved to make up the operating system of an entire planet. Calling himself Mainframe, this hero from the past was tasked with protecting the shield of Captain America and later joined the Galactic Guardians.

If Cyrus is in fact Mainframe, it solves a little mystery from the “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” press conference on Thursday, when Marvel boss Kevin Feige and director James Gunn reportedly teased the role. As ScreenRant recaps:

Kevin Feige: Have you told anyone who Mainframe is?

James Gunn: I haven’t told anyone, yeah. Should we?

James Gunn: Oh I think I actually did. I blew it. I told one person.

Kevin Feige: It’ll get out.

Well, now it looks like it’s out. And it’s a party in the gal-ax-ay!

”Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” hits theaters May 5.

Jason Chaffetz Denies Scandal Speculation After Saying He May Leave Congress Early

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Rep. Jason Chaffetz  (R-Utah) who stunningly announced this week that he won’t seek re-election and may leave office before his term ends, strongly denied he’s quitting because of some as-yet publicized scandal.

Not in any way shape or form,” Chaffetz, chair of the House Oversight Committee, said in an interview with Politico. “I’ve been given more enemas by more people over the last eight years than you can possibly imagine,” he continued. “From the Secret Service to the Democratic Party. I am who I am. If they had something really scandalous, it would’ve come out a long, long time ago.”

Chaffetz made the shock announcement this week that he won’t run for re-election next year, or be “a candidate for any office” in 2018. In the days since, he said he may not even finish out his current term.

“If I do step down early, it will be months from now,” Chaffetz told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s hard for people to believe, I really do want to be with my family more. Maybe it’s more a midlife crisis more than anything else.”

The announcement has prompted waves of speculation about Chaffetz’ future. Some have said he may be eyeing a bid for governor in 2020. Chaffetz told the Journal he was looking at the private sector.

Utah election officials told Reuters they haven’t been formally told about any plans for Chaffetz to resign. Mark Thomas, the state’s director of elections, told Reuters officials have begun gathering information about when and how to hold a special election, but “don’t know what he’s planning.”

“This is more informal, just wanting to know ourselves and be prepared,” Thomas said.

Chaffetz has drawn fierce criticism from Democrats in recent months over claims he’s been slow to investigate President Donald Trump’s ongoing and unfounded claims of voter fraud and wiretapping by former President Barack Obama. He also drew sharp rebukes from Republicans and constituents after saying in February he wouldn’t look into ties between former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn and the Russian ambassador ― a relationship that led to the Flynn’s firing.

“It’s taking care of itself,” Chaffetz said at the time.

Lyft Improves Accessibility For Drivers Who Have Hearing Impairments

Last year Lyft introduced a new feature in their cars called Amp. This is basically a device placed on the dashboard of a Lyft car in which it will glow various colors that will help riders identify their ride. It will also be able to display messages like greetings for when a passenger gets into the car.

However Lyft has decided it could do more with the feature, and in an announcement on its blog, the company has decided to improve accessibility for its drivers who might be deaf or hard of hearing. According to Lyft, “Deaf and hard-of-hearing drivers will now see new ride requests displayed on their Amp device, with text reading “NEW RIDE.” This is just one more way that Amp continues to better connect our drivers and passengers.”

They are also introducing a passenger notification system to let passengers know ahead of time that their driver might be deaf or hard of hearing. “Passengers will also experience a new app feature, letting them know that their driver is deaf or hard of hearing before their Lyft arrives. Through an SMS notification, passengers will be alerted to contact their driver by text rather than by phone, and to be sure to let the driver lead the way with communication.”

The company has also announced that they are partnering up with the National Association of the Deaf, where both organizations will work together to improve upon accessibility features as well as raise awareness.

Apple Thinks Didi Chuxing Could Eventually Eliminate Traffic Jams

Back in May 2016, Apple announced that they would be making a $1 billion investment in local company called Didi Chuxing, which is more or less thought to be China’s equivalent of Uber. In fact Uber themselves have sold their China operations to the company, which pretty much has allowed the company to dominate the Chinese market.

In a recent post in TIME’s 2017 Most Influential People (via MacRumors), one of the people the magazine named is none other than Didi Chuxing’s President Jean Liu. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook even wrote an excerpt about Liu for the magazine, where he praised the company’s innovativeness, and also suggested that they could be on the path to eliminating traffic jams for good.

According to Cook’s excerpt, “She and her team are succeeding with innovative, big-data algorithms that aim both to improve the efficiency of Didi’s service and to ease the congestion on roadways. By analyzing commuter patterns the way oceanographers track the tides, Didi may help traffic jams go the way of the flip phone.”

Given Apple’s massive investment it’s not hard to see why Cook might be so optimistic about the Chinese company’s future and abilities. The company also revealed that they are working on self-driving cars which we can only imagine will go towards easing traffic congestion.

Alexa Will Now Work With Google’s G Suite Calendar

Amazon’s Alexa can work with multiple calendar platforms, whether it be Outlook or Office 365 (just to name a few), but if you don’t use these calendars and instead are using Google’s G Suite calendar, you’ll be pleased to learn that Alexa will now be able to work with it which means that you’ll be able to control and tweak your calendar using your voice.

The basic functionality will be similar to other calendars, where users can ask Alexa to give them an overview of their day. They will also be able to make changes to their calendar or additions to any events that might pop up just by using their voice. With the addition of support for G Suite calendars, it expands Alexa’s abilities which could come in handy at home or in the office since it does support multiple calendar options.

Like we said Alexa has supported multiple major calendars such as Google Calendar which was available since launch, as well as Outlook and Office 365, so with the addition of G Suite, it does help round out some of the more major calendar options out there. The update should already be live and users who want to enable support for G Suite will be able to find the option via the Alexa companion app under “Settings”, and “Calendar” in the Accounts section of the settings page. Once you’ve enabled it you should be good to go.

Huawei Explains Why Some P10 Handsets Are Slower Than Others

Recently it seems that there have been some users complaining about their Huawei P10 and P10 Plus handsets, in which it was discovered that some handsets were only getting eMMC 5.1 memory speeds on their devices, as opposed to other P10 handsets that appeared to have UFS 2.0 or 2.1 chips that were getting considerably faster read speeds.

So what’s with the discrepancies? Turns out that this was because of the use of different chips, and apparently there is a shortage which is why Huawei had to make do with what they had. This is according to Huawei’s Business Group CEO Richard Yu who took to Weibo (via Engadget) and offered the explanation.

However he claims that real-life performance and experience is being maintained through hardware and software optimization, meaning that regardless of which chip you get, you should get the same experience. It should be noted that according to the benchmarks, the handsets with the eMMC 5.1 chips had read speeds of about 250MB/s, versus those with UFS 2.0 or 2.1 that were getting 550MB/s or 750MB/s.

Whether or not you’ll be able to tell the differences will depend on how observant you are, and also what kind of apps you are running. If you’re running something that’s intensive then you might be able to notice the differences, but if you’re just chatting or surfing the web, the difference might not be quite as apparent.

Android Wear 2.0 To Roll Out To Remaining Devices In May

Android Wear 2.0’s roll out has been happening in fits and bursts and recently Google even announced that some devices might see their update delayed due to a last minute bug that was discovered. However the good news is that in May, all Android Wear devices that are eligible for the update should get the update already.

This is according to a recent post on Google’s Support website in which Google posted a list of devices that will be getting the update either by the end of April or sometime late May. This includes devices such as the Moto 360 Gen 2, Moto 360 Sport, LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, Huawei Watch, Huawei Watch Ladies, Asus ZenWatch 2, and Asus ZenWatch 3.

None of these devices have yet to receive their update so if you own any of them, then do keep an eye out for it. Android Wear 2.0 is supposed to represent a pretty major update for the Android Wear platform. It was originally planned for a release last year but Google delayed it due to feedback they got from developers.

We know that it’s been a long time coming but all of the waiting should eventually come to a close by the end of next month, so until then Android Wear users who have yet to receive the update will just have to remain patient.
