Verizon’s Moto G5 Plus Can’t Call 911 With VoLTE Enabled, Fix Incoming

If you use the Moto G5 Plus and you’re on Verizon’s network, it seems that it might be a good idea to disable VoLTE temporarily. This is because it has been discovered that if you have VoLTE enabled, you won’t be able to call out to 911 which is pretty damn dangerous especially in emergencies.

The good news is that according to a post on the Lenovo forums, the company seems to have identified the issue that is causing this problem and will be issuing a fix within the next week. “We have identified a software issue impacting Moto G5 Plus users on the Verizon network. Users with VoLTE enabled may be unable to make emergency (911) calls. We understand the importance of this issue and believe it’s important to disclose to our customers.”

“We will be issuing a fix for this issue within the next week. Please accept and install the software update as soon as it is offered on your device.” In the meantime like we mentioned above, the company has advised users to turn off VoLTE functionality for now until the fix has been patch. This ultimately means that users won’t be able to use voice and data at the same time, but note that this is only temporary so maybe you should go ahead and do it.

Google Removes ‘Free App Of The Week’ Section From Play Store

Last month it was revealed that Google had introduced a “Free App of the Week” section to its Play Store, where users who wanted to see what paid apps were free that week could find it easily. It was a pretty useful feature, especially if you love freebies (who doesn’t?), but oddly enough Google has since removed it.

According to a report from Android Authority, it appears that Google has removed the section from the Play Store without providing any particular reason for doing so. We should point out that apps that are discounted or made free temporarily are still available and is at the discretion of the developer/publisher, but finding these apps now will be a bit harder.

It is possible that the removal is temporary, or maybe Google was testing the feature before and decided that maybe it wasn’t worth keeping there. Either way we’ll just have to wait and see, but if you’re looking for paid apps that have gone free, we guess you’ll just have to do it the old fashioned way, which is to search on Google and look for websites that have compiled the data. In any case are any Android users out there going to miss this feature?

Samsung Galaxy S8 Appears To Survive The Bend Test

When Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were launched, there was a bit of controversy regarding the durability of the phone where it seemed that it could be easily bent. Users were reporting that their phones were getting bent just by being inside their pockets. From then on, bend tests were a pretty common sight whenever a new phone launched.

That being said, how does the Samsung Galaxy S8 hold up under such duress? It turns out that Samsung has built a pretty solid phone for themselves. In the video above posted by JerryRigEverything, he puts the Galaxy S8 through a bunch of tests that puts the durability of the phone to the test.

In the bend test portion of the video, it seems that when pressure was applied, the phone did not bend or crack quite as easily as other phones we’ve seen. In fact the Galaxy S8 held up pretty well and it might have to do with the fact that the phone has a rear glass panel that could offer up some reinforcement.

The video also shows that the phone is pretty durable when it comes to scratches and while we wouldn’t exactly call it fire-proof, it seemed to function like normal even under two 30-second rounds with a lighter held to its display.

Future LG Smartphones Could Sport OLED Displays

A popular rumor that seems to be persisting has suggested that the iPhone 8 could sport an OLED display, and a recent report has revealed that Apple could be encouraging LG to ramp up OLED production so that they can supply to Apple the panels they need. Now in a report from ET News, it has been suggested that LG could be considering the move.

The move won’t be just for Apple’s sake, but it could also be for their own purposes as LG Display could end up supplying these panels to LG Electronics for use in future smartphones, as potentially Xiaomi as well. The report claims that LG will begin supplying curved OLED displays for smartphones during the first half of the year, and that these displays could be used for LG’s upcoming LG V30 which is rumored for launch later this year.

LG isn’t a stranger when it comes to OLED displays as it has used the technology with its smartwatch. The company reportedly produces about 22,000 units a month but with this deal, they are expected to increase that amount to 37,000. We’re not sure if these will be enough for LG’s own purposes, Xiaomi, and possibly even Apple, but we guess we’ll have to wait and see. Until then take it with a grain of salt for now.

Over 1,000 InterContinental Hotels Hit By Data Breach

In recent times we’ve noticed a rather disturbing trend of big name hotels and retailers being hit with data breaches, where customer information like names, emails, home addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases even credit card information have been hacked and leaked online.

Unfortunately this trend does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon because according to a report by Brian Krebs at KrebsOnSecurity, over 1,000 InterContinental Hotels have recently been hit by a data breach where data from cash registers at over 1,000 of their properties have been compromised with malicious software.

In a statement released by the company, “The investigation identified signs of the operation of malware designed to access payment card data from cards used onsite at front desks at certain IHG-branded franchise hotel locations between September 29, 2016 and December 29, 2016.  Although there is no evidence of unauthorized access to payment card data after December 29, 2016, confirmation that the malware was eradicated did not occur until the properties were investigated in February and March 2017.”

Now there is a chance that you could have been affected, so the best way is to keep tabs on your credit card statement to ensure that there are no unauthorized charges made to it. The hotel chain has also created an online tool in which customers can check to see if the InterContinental Hotel they were staying at was one of those affected by the breach.

Digital Game Sales Outpacing Physical Sales In The US

If given the choice to buy a game in physical format where it can be installed via DVD/Blu-ray where it comes with a box and maybe a manual, or a game that’s digitally available where you can purchase and download it straightaway, which would you choose? If you answered digital, know that you are in the majority at least as far as the US market is concerned.

According to recent figures released by the ESA, it seems that over in the US, digital game sales are outpacing that of physical sales. As you can see in the graph above, it shows that in 2016, digital sales accounted for 74% of total sales. This is versus 2010 where digital sales accounted for 31% and was clearly in the minority.

In fact we expect that as time moves forward, the discrepancy will only increase. We doubt that physical sales will ever go away completely simply because there are gamers who do love collecting physical copies of games, and then there are also special collector’s edition of games that are bundled with extra goodies like figures, soundtracks, artbooks, and more that will also appeal to certain gamers.

That being said, the numbers aren’t broken down by platform or device, so assume that they cover all platforms and devices that gamers can play games on, such as PC, console, mobile, and etc. You can read the full report via the ESA’s website.

FTC Warns Of Fake Nintendo Switch Emulators Ads

Gaming emulators are kind of a grey area because it allows gamers to play games that might not have been designed for a particular device, which in turn is kind of like piracy since you didn’t pay for it. For example there are Game Boy emulators that lets players play Game Boy games on their PCs.

Now if you’re seeing ads pop up for Nintendo Switch emulators, we should warn you guys that these ads are for fake software. In fact these ads are blatantly fake to the point where the FTC had to step in and issue a warning on its website where they are telling gamers to steer clear of such software.

According to the FTC, “Online ads for emulators, sometimes with Nintendo branding, say they can run Switch’s games on your desktop. But there is no legit Nintendo Switch emulator. It’s a scam. Even worse, when you try to download a Nintendo Switch emulator, you can install unwanted applications on your computer. These apps give you misleading information about computer problems that aren’t really there, then ask you to pay to fix them.”

The FTC notes that it seems that these ads and fake software are preying on how the Nintendo Switch might be hard to get at this point in time, and that they trick gamers into thinking that these emulators can tide gamers over until they buy the real thing. Basically if you see such ads, just know that they are fake.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Removes Fire-Hopping Trick

Just like how the bunny hop was a controversial move in Counter-Strike back in the day, Mario Kart 8 had a fire-hopping trick where gamers could gain small boosts by hopping left and right while coming out of a boost. It wasn’t really an illegal move but pulling it off wasn’t easy and not all players might be aware of it.

This means that in some instances, more pro players would have an advantage over other players who were playing “normally”. If you’ve hated the move and felt it was unfair, you might be pleased to learn that in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Nintendo seems to have removed the feature which means that now everyone will be “equal”, or at least to a certain extent.

The discovery that the feature could be gone was in a video uploaded onto YouTube by GameXplain where they took the game for a spin to see if it was true, only to discover that it has. We’re sure that there will be more elite Mario Kart players who will lament the missing feature as we guess it separated the pros from the newbies, but at least now the playing field is more or less even.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be released on the 28th of April where it will be an exclusive title for the Switch. Gamers can check out this video if they want to see the difference in graphics between the original title for the Wii U and the version for the Switch.

Facebook Testing Helicopter Drone That Can Provide Internet Access

In the event of an emergency where infrastructure has been damaged, communication is key and one of the ways we rely on communications these days is through the internet, but if the internet is down, how will that work? Granted there are other means, but Facebook is looking at methods to keep the connection alive.

In the past we have seen how Facebook has tried out the idea using drones, but in a recent announcement, Facebook revealed that they are testing out a new helicopter drone that will be able to achieve the same thing, but the main difference is that these helicopter drones will be able to stay afloat for months on end.

According to Facebook, “For situations where a faster deployment is needed — such as a natural disaster, when infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed but some fiber lines still work — we’ve developed what we call Tether-tenna. It’s a small helicopter tethered to a fiber line and power—essentially, insta-infrastructure.”

“If the fiber line is still good to a certain point, we can make a virtual tower by flying a Tether-tenna a few hundred feet from the ground. When completed, this technology will be able to be deployed immediately and operate for months at a time to bring back connectivity in case of an emergency — ensuring the local community can stay connected while the in-ground connectivity is under repair.”

However Facebook notes that this helicopter drone/Tether-tenna is still in the early stages of development which means that we probably shouldn’t expect to see it in action anytime soon.

Facebook Expects AR Smartglasses To Go Mainstream In 2022

For a brief moment it seemed that Google Glass and the concept of smartglasses was a failure given that Google shut down the project (the first iteration), and also based on the hostility towards users with smartglasses. However we haven’t seen similar backlash when Snap launched Spectacles which was basically a pair of augmented reality glasses.

Does this mean that AR-based wearables are due to become mainstream? According to Facebook, yes, but we shouldn’t expect that to happen until at least 2022. Speaking at Facebook’s F8 conference, Michael Abrash, Facebook’s chief scientist of Oculus Research said, “Despite all the attention focused on AR today it will be five years at best before we’re really at the start of the ramp to widespread, glasses-based augmented reality, before AR has its Macintosh moment.”

Abrash also goes on to add, “20 or 30 years from now, I predict that instead of carrying stylish smartphones everywhere, we’ll wear stylish glasses. Those glasses will offer VR, AR and everything in between and we’ll use them all day.” That being said, it is interesting that Facebook is looking into AR tech, especially given that they have a vested interest in VR with their acquisition of Oculus.

However during the conference, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted that the company could have glasses or even contact lenses that could rival Snap’s offerings, although when exactly that will debut remains to be seen.
