The path to self-driving cars just promised to get a whole lot more affordable, with one of the biggest expenses in autonomous hardware potentially dropping exponentially. A new sensor from Velodyne LIDAR should not only be a fraction of the price of current laser range-finders, but also blend much more readily into the bodywork of cars and other vehicles. LIDAR … Continue reading

One Drake fan sure was thirsty.
A South Carolina woman who was arrested for allegedly breaking into the rapper’s home and raiding his fridge is expected in court Wednesday.
On April 3, police responded to the Los Angeles residence of Drake, whose birth name is Aubrey Graham, after receiving a call about a possible burglary, according to Sgt. Matthew Dunn of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu-Lost Hills Station.
Drake was not home at the time, and when deputies arrived around 10:30 a.m. they were directed by a property manager to a locked room where the suspect was hiding.
Once inside, police found 24-year-old Mesha Collins. While hiding, she had helped herself to a Pepsi, Sprite and a Fiji bottled water, according to Dunn.
She was also wearing one of Drake’s hoodies.
How Collins entered the home is unknown. Dunn told the Huffington Post there were no signs of forced entry.
Collins made a statement to police that she had permission to be at the residence.
“It was proven to be false,” Dunn told HuffPost.
Collins was arrested, charged with residential burglary and was held on $100,000 bail.
What a time to be alive, guys.

Miami-Dade County To Honor 'Moonlight' Creators With Renaming Of Local Street
Posted in: Today's ChiliMiami-Dade County is celebrating “Moonlight” and the impact of its creators with the renaming of a street in their hometown.
Commissioners announced Tuesday that they would rename a stretch of NW 22nd Avenue in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood “Moonlight Way,” according to the Miami New Times. The Academy Award-winning film, which is set in Liberty City, was co-written and directed by Barry Jenkins and executive produced by playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney ― both of whom are natives of the South Florida community.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Audrey Edmonson told the New Times that she hopes renaming the street will remind children in underprivileged neighborhoods that despite their surroundings, they can go on to achieve their dreams.
“This movie — at least what I got from it — really depicts the life of how a lot of us were raised and what we had to go through and endure as children in the inner city,” she said. “This goes out to children still living here in the inner city that are told they’ll never amount to anything. It shows that it doesn’t matter how you were raised or where you grew up; you can still turn out to be someone.”
Edmonson added that the film’s depiction of a young boy’s struggles growing up in the poverty-stricken neighborhood mirrors actual events that take place in Liberty City.
“To everyone, I’d say it’s still not too late to watch it. It will bring awareness to those not brought up that way,” she said. “It definitely shows what goes on in the city.”
The announcement of Moonlight Way comes ahead of Jenkins and McCraney’s celebratory return to their hometown. This weekend, the pair will attend a ceremony honoring “Moonlight” during an event held at Miami’s African Heritage Cultural Arts Center.

Russia’s most famous campaigning newspaper said on Friday it had appealed to the Kremlin to protect its staff after Chechen clerics said the paper faced “retribution” for alleging that gay men in Chechnya were being tortured and killed.
Novaya Gazeta published an article this month which said authorities in the majority Muslim southern Russian republic had rounded up over 100 gay men or men suspected of being gay and tortured them. It said at least three of them had been killed.
Kremlin critics saw the report as further evidence that Moscow allows authorities in Chechnya to run the region – which has been consumed by two wars since the Soviet collapse – as a feudal fiefdom in exchange for separatist and radical Islamist sentiment being brutally suppressed.
Chechnya’s Moscow-backed president Ramzan Kadyrov denies allegations human rights are routinely flouted. His spokesman Alvi Karimov called Novaya’s report “an absolute lie”, saying there were no gay men in Chechnya to be persecuted.
“Nobody can detain or harass anyone who is simply not present in the republic,” Karimov told the Interfax news agency.
Novaya’s report also caused outrage among Chechnya’s Muslim clerics, who adopted a resolution saying it had insulted the dignity and Islamic faith of Chechen men and society.
“We promise that retribution will catch up with the hate-mongers wherever and whoever they are and with no statute of limitations,” the resolution read.
Dmitry Muratov, Novaya’s editor, said on Friday that the resolution was an incitement to violence and that he was worried about his staff’s safety.
“This resolution is encouraging religious fanatics to retaliate against our journalists,” he said in a statement, calling on the authorities to protect journalists and stop anyone whipping up hatred against them.
Two of Novaya’s reporters specializing in Chechnya – Anna Politkovskaya and Natalya Estermirova – have been murdered in the last decade. Neither case has been fully solved.
Set up with financial help from ex-Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993, Novaya Gazeta is well-known in Russia for its investigations into official corruption, its reporting on Chechnya, criticism of the authorities and coverage of the opposition in a media landscape where most big-circulation newspapers are loyal to the Kremlin.
The Kremlin said it was following the situation closely and that anyone who thought Novaya’s report was false should contest it through the courts.
“We are against any actions that could pose a threat to the safety or lives of journalists,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Peskov said that reports about gay men being tortured in Chechnya could not be regarded as reliable at this stage however, and that the Kremlin was not aware of the police receiving any complaints on the subject.
Novaya said Russian investigators had so far ignored a request it sent to the authorities to investigate the contents of its report.

No need to be in the business of misery anymore, folks. Paramore just dropped their first new song in four years.
Please excuse us while we pop punk jump for joy.
The song, titled “Hard Times,” is a retro take on Paramore’s classic punk-rock-pop sound. The music video has a distinctive throwback vibe, with colorful squiggles and neon illustrations covering the screen.
“Hard Times” is the debut single off of Paramore’s forthcoming album “After Laughter,” due May 12. The single is the band’s first release since their 2013 self-titled album.
“I didn’t even know if we were going to make another record,” lead singer Hayley Williams told The New York Times. “There was a moment when I didn’t even want it to happen. Then it was like, I want it to happen, but I don’t know how we’re going to do it.”
Luckily for their fans, they figured it out.
“Hard Times” also marks the return of founding member and drummer Zac Farro. Farro and his brother Josh left Paramore in 2010 after a bitter rift: Josh later said he and his bandmates were just “riding on the coattails” of “Hayley’s dream.”
Well, it appears Hayley Williams and Farro have put the “Hard Times” behind them. Not only do they have a new album on the horizon, but the band also announced a summer tour in Europe. Grab your Vans and studded belts, people ― this is the moment we’ve been waiting for!
Check out Paramore’s music video for “Hard Times” below.
