iPhone 7 Plus Used To Photograph Conde Nast Magazine Covers

You might have seen videos that show behind-the-scenes of magazine cover photoshoots, where it seems like a lot of expensive equipment like lighting, backdrops, and cameras are used. However if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration that won’t necessarily break the bank, Conde Nast’s magazine covers for “Bon Appetit” and “Traveler” might be of interest to you.

Why is this, you ask? This is because according to the publisher, the latest covers for two of its magazines were shot using an iPhone 7 Plus. Of course this does not mean that things like lighting were not considered, but it goes to show how far technology has come in terms of quality of photos and what not.

According to Bon Appetit’s creative director Alex Grossman, “The iPhone lens is how we look at photography now. It changes the whole process and feel of a photo shoot, making it more intimate, less invasive, more nimble. We wanted to create something our readers would relate to. This is technology completely changing how the publishing and design industries are moving forward.”

This isn’t the first time that we’re seeing how technology these days are changing the way we used to do things. For example earlier this year the cover of The New Yorker was actually drawn up using the iPad Pro.

WASHINGTON ― Immigrant rights advocates were dismayed on Tuesday by reports that the first undocumented immigrant with active Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protections was deported under President Donald Trump.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) had the opposite reaction.

“First non-valedictorian DREAMer deported. Border Patrol, this one’s for you,” King tweeted, with a photo of a beer.

King is an immigration hawk who staunchly opposes the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, and any other protections for so-called Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. He infamously said in 2014 that for every Dreamer who is a valedictorian, “there’s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”

So it’s no surprise he had little sympathy for Juan Manuel Montes, a 23-year-old who came to the U.S. at the age of 9 and was detained and deported by the Border Patrol, first reported by USA Today on Tuesday.

Montes says a Border Patrol agent stopped him in Calexico, California, on Feb. 17 and did not allow him to retrieve his DACA documents or his ID, which he had left in a friend’s car. Lawyers for the Dreamer said in a complaint that Border Patrol agents pressured him to sign documents approving his removal that he did not understand, and they didn’t provide him copies, allow him to see a lawyer or put him before a judge.

DACA does not guarantee safety from removal, and some Dreamers have been deported after losing their protections. About 1,500 people have lost DACA status due to criminal convictions or gang affiliation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

But Montes is the first documented case of a Dreamer with active DACA status being deported. He had past criminal convictions for driving without a license and shoplifting, but his record did not exclude him from the program and his paperwork was not set to expire until 2018, according to USA Today.

Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for comment on his detention or removal.

Trump maintained the DACA program even though he promised to end it ― which King believes he should follow through on. But he also said he would give Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection agents more leeway to do what they thought was right, vastly expanding the scope of who should be considered a priority for deportation.

Still, the president and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly have said DACA recipients would not be the target.

Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), accused the president of breaking his word.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), a longtime advocate for Dreamer protections, said in a statement that he was “disturbed” by reports about Montes’ removal and had demanded an explanation from ICE.

“Just last month Secretary Kelly promised me that no one with DACA would lose this protection unless they violated the terms of DACA,” Durbin said. “I intend to hold him to this commitment.”

Logitech’s POP Buttons Are Now HomeKit Compatible

Last year Logitech launched their POP smart buttons which basically allowed users to control a variety of Bluetooth and WiFi connected devices using the button. This means that you don’t need to drill new switches into your wall, and you could literally place these POP buttons anywhere and they would work.

Now for those who are hoping to see more functionality and compatibility, you’ll be pleased to learn that Logitech’s POP smart buttons are now compatible with Apple’s HomeKit platform. This means that users with iOS devices and HomeKit connected devices will be able to use the POP buttons to control them as well.

According to Logitech’s announcement, “With just a push, POP delivers effortless, flexible connected home control for smart lighting, smart locks, thermostats and more. The next generation Logitech POP Smart Button Kit comes with one bridge and one pre-paired smart button, so discovering and controlling your devices with Apple’s Home app is incredibly simple and secure.”

Of course this compatibility does not take away from the fact that these buttons will still work with non-HomeKit devices, so if you’re not an Apple user not to worry as these button will continue to work just fine. The Logitech POP kit is priced at $60 which includes one button and the bridge, and additional buttons will be priced at $40 each.

Google Assistant’s Speech Tech Now Open to Developers

If you’re hoping to see more apps that offers up the ability to convert speed to text, that could be indeed be happening because Google has announced that starting from today, the Cloud Speed API will be open to third-party developers, which for those unfamiliar is the same tech behind Google products such as Google Assistant.

According to Google’s announcement, “Cloud Speech API is built on the core technology that powers speech recognition for other Google products (e.g., Google Search, Google Now, Google Assistant), but has been adapted to better fit the needs of Google Cloud customers. Cloud Speech API is one of several pre-trained machine-learning models available for common tasks like video analysis, image analysis, text analysis and dynamic translation.”

As Google points out, the Cloud Speech API was actually launched last year where it existed as an open beta, but clearly over the year Google has made some improvements and changes to it based on feedback from developers. This has resulted in improved transcription accuracy for long-form audio, faster processing of about 3x faster than the previous version, and it also now supports more file formats such as WAV, Opus, and Speex.

For end-users this probably won’t affect you too much, but like we said with developers now be able to access the API (for a fee), you can expect that some apps will want to take advantage of it.
