NES Classic Discontinued In Europe As Well

Nintendo announced the NES Classic mini-console prior to the holiday season last year. It may have underestimated just how popular it would turn out to be as the company had quite a job on its hands throughout the holiday season as it struggled to meet demands. Hundreds of thousands of units of the NES Classic were sold across the globe but it appears that the mini-console’s time has come. Nintendo has discontinued the NES Classic in Europe as well. It did the same thing in the United States just a few days back.

It hasn’t been long since Nintendo pulled the NES Classic from its website as well as from retailers across the country. Just four days later, it has done the same thing in Europe.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed to Eurogamer “We can confirm that we are no longer manufacturing the Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System. If production resumes in the future, an update will be posted on the official Nintendo website.”

It’s not like Nintendo hasn’t been clear what the purpose behind this product was. The company has previously explained that the NES Classic was never meant to be an ongoing, long-term product so it was only a matter of time before it was discontinued.

Those who have not yet been able to get their hands on one will now find it harder to come across one. Scalpers are already selling them at highly inflated prices on eBay so it may not be worth it after all.

iPhone 8 Will Reportedly Tout Curved Glass And Stainless Steel

Another day, another report about the iPhone 8. It’s the iPhone’s 10th anniversary this year so Apple is expected to launch a revolutionary product to commemorate a decade of its most popular product. A new report suggests that Apple is going to launch three new iPhones later this year, two of them will be upgraded versions of the current iPhone models and one will be an entirely new handset.

Bloomberg reports that the iPhone 8 is going to have a new type of screen that utilizes curved glass. The handset is also going to have stainless steel materials and more advanced cameras. The iPhone 8 is reportedly going to have a display that covers almost the entire front of the device.

The size may be larger than that of the iPhone 7 Plus but the increased screen-to-body ratio will allow for the handset’s overall size to be similar to that of the iPhone 7. Apple may also free up more space for the display by integrating the home button into the display itself in a manner not unlike the one we’ve seen Samsung utilize with the Galaxy S8.

Previous reports have already suggested that the iPhone 8 is going to use an OLED display. This will be the first time that Apple will make the shift from LCD panels for its smartphone. Upgraded models of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are said to retain their 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch LCD displays respectively.

Apple is reportedly testing prototypes of the iPhone 8 with slightly curved glass on the front and back. The company is said to be testing versions of its dual camera system for the new iPhone which have the dual camera system positioned vertically instead of horizontally in a bid to further improve the imaging performance.

It goes without saying that none of this is confirmed at this point in time and Apple is unlikely to confirm anything about its new iPhones before the time comes. Apple’s new iPhones are expected to be launched this fall.

Facebook Spaces Beta Launched For Oculus Rift

Facebook today announced that it has launched Facebook Spaces in beta for the Oculus Rift. Spaces provides users with a new way to connect with their friends and loved ones in virtual reality. It enables users to virtually be in-person with friends and family in VR, heaving fun and meaningful experiences no matter where everyone might be.

Users can create an identity for themselves that represents their real self in Facebook spaces. This will help people recognize them when using the app. Once users have decided on their look, they can go ahead and invite their Facebook friends to join in on the fun. They obviously need to have the Oculus Rift headset for this to work.

Together, they can browse Facebook’s cache of 360 videos and photos, relive personal memories from their Timelines, and even explore things from people and pages that they follow all in virtual reality.

Facebook Spaces also enables users to phone in a friend form the real world with Messenger video calling. This allows them to enter the VR space to see what’s going on. There are a wide variety of games that all users can play with each other as they’re hanging out in virtual reality.

Facebook Spaces has been launched today in beta for Oculus Rift. New features will be added down the road and Spaces will also be expanded to other virtual reality platforms in the future.

Facebook Lets Developers Build Augmented Reality Experiences In Its In-App Cameras

Facebook has launched a new platform for developers today which will enable them to build augmented reality experiences for its in-app cameras. The company says that this is going to push AR technology further into the mainstream while also allowing the social network’s users to take advantage of a wide variety of AR experiences. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg formally announced the platform today at the company’s F8 developer conference.

Some developers are being provided access to a closed beta of the platform before more are allowed in. They can start experimenting by creating AR filters for photos and videos, art projects, AR games, and more.

The AR experiences will live inside the in-app cameras of Facebook’s many apps. For example, the recently launched Stories feature in Facebook proper will soon have thousands of AR filters once AR experiences submitted via this platform are linked with the apps. These filters will include three-dimensional text and images.

Some of these effects are going to be fun,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on stage at the developer conference, adding that “others are going to be useful.” He also said that “Even though we were a little slow to add cameras to all our apps, I’m confident that now we’re going to push this augmented reality camera forward.”

Expect these new augmented reality experiences to arrive in Facebook’s in-app cameras in the coming months.

Windows 10 Power Throttling Feature Will Help Save Battery Life

Microsoft today announced that it’s testing a new Windows 10 feature called power throttling which as the name suggests is going to help conserve battery life on Windows 10-powered notebooks and tablets. The feature is being tested in the latest Windows 10 preview build (16176). The company says that this feature will help save as much as 11 percent battery usage.

Many of us have multiple apps running in the background on our computers and they can eat away at the battery life if we’re using a notebook or a tablet. Power throttling will run background apps in a more efficient manner so as to conserve battery life.

When the power throttling feature is active and background apps are running, Windows is going to place the CPU in its most efficient operating modes to ensure that background work is not suspended but is done using minimal possible battery power.

Microsoft’s experiments have revealed that this feature can save up to 11 percent in CPU power consumption for some of the most strenuous use cases. Microsoft is going to release this feature in the next major Windows 10 update that’s due to arrive later this year.

It does point out that the power throttling feature only works with processors that have Intel’s Speed Shift technology, this includes the company’s 6th generation and beyond Core processors. Microsoft is going to expand support to other processors as well in the next few months.
