Stephen Colbert Is Turning One Of His Popular Segments Into A Book

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert is a longtime evangelist of new books. During his tenure at “The Colbert Report,” he hosted authors like National Book Award winner Phil Klay, and literary darlings Toni Morrison, John Green and Michael Chabon.

Now, Colbert is coming out with his own book ― his sixth, including a co-written title in 2004, and the 2012 children’s book I Am a Pole (And So Can You!).

Colbert’s latest ― Midnight Confessions ― is based on the “Late Show” segment of the same name, where the host finds time for “one of his favorite Catholic rituals” by sitting in a makeshift confessional and substituting the audience for a priest. The book will include his confessions as well as audience submissions, and will be released by Simon and Schuster on Sept. 5, Hollywood Reporter writes.

Women's Periods Don't Really Sync Up When They Live Together

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Women’s periods don’t actually synchronize if they live together, according to a new study from a period- tracking app.

The study, from the period-tracking app Clue, is one of the largest of its kind to look for evidence of menstrual-cycle syncing among women, according to the Guardian.

The idea that women who spend a lot of time together experience an alignment of their menstrual cycles was first examined in 1971 in a study of female college students. That study found that the start dates of women’s periods got closer together if the women were roommates or close friends. One hypothesis for the results was that women release pheromones that influence each other’s cycles. But the study drew  criticism for using flawed statistical methods, and many subsequent studies have failed to replicate the results. [5 Myths About Women’s Bodies]

In the new study, Clue teamed up with researchers at the University of Oxford to analyze data from their period-tracking app. Of the 1,500 women who responded to the study survey, the researchers narrowed it  to 360 pairs of women who used Clue. Each woman said she had some type of close relationship with the other person in the pair — they were friends, siblings, roommates, partners, mother-daughter pairs or colleagues. The researchers only included pairs who lived in the same city as each other, and about one-third of the pairs lived together. Women were excluded from the study if they used hormonal birth control.

After analyzing at least three consecutive cycles from each of the pairs, the researchers found that 273 of the pairs saw their cycles diverge — that is, they actually had a larger difference in their cycle start dates at the end of the study than at the beginning. Just 79 of the pairs saw their cycles converge. And living together did not increase the likelihood of cycle alignment, Clue said.

This isn’t the first study to cast doubt on the idea of syncing menstrual cycles. A 1993 study conducted by researchers at New Mexico State University, which included about 30 lesbian couples, found no evidence of convergence of periods over time. A 1991 study from the University of Missouri, which included 132 sorority members and their roommates, also found that the start dates of the women’s periods tended to diverge over time. And a 1994 study of women on an Israeli basketball team found no evidence of menstrual synchrony.

So why do women sometimes say that, anecdotally, they’ve experienced their cycle aligning with someone else’s?

It could simply be chance, according to Beverly I. Strassmann, a professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. For example, if two women have cycles that are 28 days long, the maximum they could be out of sync would be 14 days, Strassmann wrote in a 1999 opinion paper on the topic published in the journal Human Reproduction. On average, they will be seven days apart, and half of the time their period start dates should be even closer, Strassmann said. And since a woman’s period typically lasts at least five days, “it is not surprising that friends commonly experience overlapping menses, which is taken as personal confirmation of menstrual synchrony,” Strassmann said.

Nikki Haley Condemns Alleged Abuse, Killings Of Gay Men In Chechnya

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley called for an investigation into disturbing allegations of abuse and murder of gay men in the Russian republic of Chechnya Monday.

The claims emerged April 1 when a Russian opposition newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, reported that at least 100 men had been detained “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation,” with three of those men possibly killed. A second

A second Novaya Gazeta article published April 4 doubled down on those reports, with a source telling the publication that the Muslim-majority region’s anti-LGBTQ efforts include concentration camps.

Despite repeated denials by Chechen authorities, the claims ignited an international media firestorm, which prompted Haley to speak out Monday. “We continue to be disturbed by reports of kidnapping, torture, and murder of people in Chechnya based on their sexual orientation and those persecuted by association,” she wrote in a statement. “If true, this violation of human rights cannot be ignored ― Chechen authorities must immediately investigate these allegations, hold anyone involved accountable, and take steps to prevent future abuses.”

She went on to note, “We are against all forms of discrimination, including against people based on sexual orientation. When left unchecked, discrimination and human rights abuses can lead to destabilization and conflict.”

A number of LGBTQ rights advocates were quick to praise the ambassador’s effort. Among them was GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, who applauded Haley for “taking the right step” days after the queer rights group had urged her to condemn the “humanitarian crisis.”

“This is a powerful sign that the U.S. Mission to the United Nations will continue to prioritize LGBTQ acceptance,” Ellis wrote in an email statement sent to The Huffington Post, “and fight discrimination and human rights abuses around the world.”

Ellis reiterated her support on Twitter Monday.

Human Rights First offered similar words.

“A comprehensive international response to the situation in Chechnya is crucial to asserting the international community’s values and advancing human rights,” Elisa Massimino, the group’s president and CEO, had written in a letter addressed to Haley Monday. “I strongly support your initiative to use the U.S. presidency of the U.N. Security Council to advance international thinking on the clear links between upholding universal values and the maintenance of international peace and security, and hope that you will use this effort to call attention to an ongoing outrage that has no place in the modern world.”

Though details of the Chechen allegations remain frustratingly vague, celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Matt Bomer and Billy Eichner have condemned the reports on Twitter. Meanwhile, former Vice President Joe Biden said he was “disgusted and appalled” by the reports in an April 14 statement

“When faced with such crimes of hate and inhumanity, it is the responsibility of every person of conscience to speak out—to oppose this campaign of violence before it continues further,” Biden wrote in the statement. “Unfortunately, the human rights abuses perpetrated by Chechen authorities and the culture of impunity that surrounds them means that these hate crimes are unlikely to ever be properly investigated or that the perpetrators will see justice. But that does not mean that we should fail to defend basic human rights, fundamental freedoms, and universal values.”

Zoe Saldana Uses 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' To Get Her Kids To Eat Veggies

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Want your kids to eat their vegetables? Just tell them you’re related to the Hulk. It works for Zoe Saldana.

On Monday, the cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” including Saldana, appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” During the interview, Kimmel said the actors’ kids must love seeing their parents save the galaxy on screen. Saldana agreed, explaining that playing the green-colored character Gamora gives her the upper hand when it comes to convincing her kids to eat their vegetables.

“My kids think that I’m related to the Hulk, so I’m using it, and I’m getting them to eat their vegetables,” she said. “I even go as far as I go behind this wall, and I’m like, ‘I’m going to go call the Hulk because you guys are not eating your veggies and he’s going to come and take your toys.’”

Saldana, who has 2-year-old twin boys and announced her third child’s arrival this past February, said she then growls behind the wall like the Hulk, convincing her kids to eat their veggies rather than risk a visit from the big guy.

Chris Pratt, who stars as Peter Quill (also known as Star-Lord) in the film, said the movie has also given him parenting bonus points. He told Kimmel having his son Jack, who is now 4, visit the set with him was his “favorite memory from this movie,” especially when Jack got to check out the spaceship used in the film.

“You saw it in his eyes,” Pratt said. “He thought like, ‘I’ve seen it on TV or in the movie, but I guess my dad really does fly a spaceship to work.’”

No word on whether little Jack calls his dad Star-Lord, though.

This Graph Shows Just How Much Kellyanne Conway's 'Free Commercial' Helped Boost Ivanka Trump's Sales

Few stories about Ivanka Trump’s brand have been quite as controversial as the “free commercial” presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway gave the first daughter’s company on national television on February 9.

Conway’s endorsement, which she offered in response to Nordstrom dropping the label from stores, renewed conflict of interest concerns over Trump family holdings and earned Conway a discipline recommendation from the Office of Government Ethics for using her White House position to sell products.

A graph included in a new Associated Press report about Ivanka Trump’s conflicts of interest regarding China shows that concern was warranted ― by thousands and thousands of percentage points.

The AP compared U.S. sales of Ivanka Trump merchandise at the online marketplace Lyst in February 2017 with the same month the previous year. Lyst had already reported an uptick of 346 percent in sales of Trump’s brand between January and February 2017 alone, bumping Trump from its 550th most popular brand to its 11th most popular brand in one month.

But one day in particular saw a staggering 10,700 percent increase over the previous year: February 9, the day of Conway’s infamous appearance on Fox News.

“Go buy Ivanka’s stuff! I hate shopping, and I will go get some myself today,” Conway said after calling Ivanka “a champion for women empowerment.”

“It is just a wonderful line. I own some of it,” she added. “I fully, I’m going to give a free commercial here. Go buy it today, everybody. You can find it online.”

There was a clear trend in larger support and new support from red states.
a Lyst spokeswoman

While the brand’s sales increased in general year-over-year, “there was a clear trend in larger support and new support from red states,” said a spokeswoman for Lyst. The brand saw an 802 percent increase in February in Kentucky and a 1,173 percent increase in Texas. There was also a 598 percent increase in Florida, which is not technically a red state but did go for Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

There was only a slight increase in sales in blue states, and Washington, D.C. even saw a 10 percent decrease in gross merchandise volume, according to Lyst. Ivanka Trump saw February sales on Lyst from 15 states where there were previously no sales at all, including Arkansas, Iowa, Mississippi and North Carolina.

The November section of the graph shows that sales of Trump’s brand also went up on the day of the election, but “only” by 600 percent. That feels like child’s play compared to the huge spike that followed Conway’s remarks ― remarks over which the White House declined to discipline Conway despite the OGE’s recommendation.

Although Lyst is one of many retailers at which U.S. consumers can purchase Ivanka Trump products, the data above includes millions of registered users. And the trend seems to hold overall: Market research data and the Ivanka Trump company itself confirmed sales surged in February

“In some of the categories it was the [brand’s] best performance ever,” company president Abigail Klem said last month.

Clearly, Conway got the result she was hoping for. And with Trump becoming an official White House employee but still profiting from her business, the concerns about conflicts of interest related to her brand are only getting worse
