NYC taxi commission wants Uber to add in-app tipping

Uber has long had a complicated relationship with tips. As the company said last year, tipping is not “expected or required” when you take an Uber, and the app still does not provide an option to do so. That might change in New York City before long,…

Raise the horns for Anthrax and Killswitch Engage in VR tonight

There really isn’t anything like being on the floor during a heavy metal show. The smell of sweat, spilled beer and, ahem, greener substances combine to form one of the more unique aromas in live music. But as enticing as that may be, sometimes you j…

Steve Jobs’ custom Apple I and other historic machines are on display at Seattle museum

Long ago, Apple was a handful of people working in an industry that was only just beginning to take the idea of personal computing seriously. In the earliest days of those early days, Steves Wozniak and Jobs made their first device together: the Apple I. Few of these were sold, and fewer still survive — but a museum in Seattle managed to get three. And one of them was Jobs’… Read More

9 Consumer Complaints About Prevagen, the Bullshit Memory Drug

Have you seen those ads for Prevagen, the memory-enhancing supplement? It’s got “a protein originally found in jellyfish,” so you know it has to be good. The company that makes the drug, Quincy Biosciences, is currently being sued in federal court by the FTC and the New York Attorney General for “clear-cut fraud.” So…

R2-D2 Pizza Wheel Slices, Beeps, and Boops

I really like pizza, and we bake it frequently around my house. If you like to make pizza too, you need a good pizza cutter. Sure you could go down to Walmart and get a plain pizza wheel for a few bucks, but why get a crappy one when you can get a Star Wars one?

The R2-D2 Pizza Cutter starts out with the standard spinning blade of pizza cutting. The handle is where the cool stuff is. It looks like R2, and has a cutout for a speaker in the base. That speaker makes R2-D2 boops and beeps as you slice up your pie. Sadly electronics in the handle mean you can’t just toss it in the dishwasher, and you need to handwash it.

You can grab yours over at ThinkGeek for just $9.99(USD).

Microsoft Patches NSA’s Windows Exploits

Mysterious hacker collective Shadow Brokers recently released a cache of NSA tools which include some that have been designed to target Windows-powered computers. This obviously reflects badly on Microsoft as its customers are open to hacking by a state agency. Microsoft has sent out an official statement confirming that the exploits mentioned in the Shadow Brokers have already been fixed by previous updates.

A spokesperson for Microsoft confirmed that the company has “investigated and confirmed that the exploits disclosed by the Shadow Brokers have already been addressed by previous updates to our supported products.”

In a post on its official blog, the company added that at least nine of the disclosed exploits were patched as recently as last month. It wasn’t able to reproduce three of the mentioned exploits on supported platforms so they don’t require patches. All of the exploits that were shared by Shadow Brokers would have allowed attackers to compromise affected computers on several versions of Windows.

Microsoft is not going to fix the exploits that have to do with older versions of Windows that it has stopped supported, such as Windows Vista, so now is a great time for those who are on older unsupported versions to make a switch to a more recent version of Windows.

The relevant patches have already been rolled out so Windows users shouldn’t be at risk as far as these exploits are concerned.

Tesla Model S Price Reduced

Tesla has made its most affordable Model S option even more affordable as it implemented a price reduction overnight. The options have apparently been streamlined ahead of the final unveiling of the $35,000 Model 3 which will be properly revealed in July. Tesla’s cheapest electric car is now the 75kWh Model S which has seen an impressive $7,500 reduction in its price.

Tesla discontinued the 60kWh Model S option just yesterday which was previously the company’s cheapest Model S option at $68,000. The 75kWh option now costs $69,500 after the $7,500 price cut and has become the cheapest Tesla on offer.

The base model also offers more value for money now as Tesla has added the $1,500 all glass roof and automatic rear power liftgate as standard equipment on its cheapest model.

Tesla has also made some other changes. For example, the smart air suspension is no longer offered as an option on the 75kWh Model S while the 72 amp charger is only included with 100kWh models now.

Customers who own an upgradeable 70kWh Model S can move up to 75kWh by unlocking the additional capacity after paying just $500 instead of the $3,500 they had to pay previously.

The company has confirmed that next week it’s going to be implementing slight price increases to its higher end 100D and P100D models but it expects the average selling price to remain almost exactly the same.

Instagram Bookmarks Can Now Be Saved In Private Collections

Instagram already allows you to bookmark a post if you want to view it later but it wasn’t possible to sort those bookmarks into different categories. The Facebook-owned photo-sharing service has announced today that users will now be able to organize their bookmarks into private collections. This will enable them to sort as many saved posts as they like into as many collections as they want to create.

Users just need to tap and hold the bookmark icon underneath any post to save it directly to a collection. They can create and name a new collection when they save a post or they can decide to add the post to a collection that they’ve already created.

It’s also possible to create a collection out of existing saved posts. Just tap the plus icon in the top right corner, give the collection a name, and then select the saved posts that are to be added to that collection.

The collections will be listed under the saved posts tab on a user’s profile. Just like all saved posts, the collections will remain private and only the user will be able to see them.

This feature is included in the latest Instagram release version 10.16 that’s live now and available for download on iOS and Android through the App Store and Google Play Store, respectively.

Sony Shuts Down Servers For Select PlayStation Games

Sony has confirmed that it’s going to shut down servers for some PlayStation games. The servers are being shut down for several PlayStation 3 games, one PlayStation 4 game as well as one PlayStation Vita game. Those who like PlayStation Move will want to pay close attention as these games are mostly titles that utilize PlayStation Move.

Given that Sony will be shutting down servers for these games, players will no longer be able to access their online features. Now that’s certainly going to take the fun out of the gameplay for most gamers, but it is what it is.

This isn’t the first time that Sony has done something like this. It has an entire list of previously decommissioned titles up on its website.

Starting July 1st, the servers for High Velocity Bowling, Medieval Moves: Deadmund’s Quest, Sports Champions, and Sports Champions 2 will be shut down. All of these games are for the PlayStation 3.

Sony is also going to shut down the servers for PlayStation Vita’s Modnation Racers: Road Trip and the PlayStation 4’s Kill Strain.

Players who have been trying to win trophies in some of the games that offer them will have to hurry up if they want to complete their collection because the games won’t be able to dole out any trophies after July 1st, 2017 when the servers are shut down.

Verizon Wear24 Smartwatch Arrives May 11th

It has been a while since Verizon announced that it will soon start selling its very own Android Wear-powered smartwatch. The carrier didn’t reveal much information about the smartwatch at that point in time but it’s following through today. Verizon has confirmed today that its Wear24 smartwatch is going to be released next month, on May 11th to be precise.

Verizon’s Wear24 smartwatch has a 1.39 inch circular display with a pixel density of 290 ppi. Verizon hasn’t shared the actual resolution of the display but it should come out to be 400×400.

The carrier hasn’t revealed much about the technical specifications as well aside from the fact that it features a 450mAh battery with wireless charging and that it’s IP67 rated for water resistance in up to 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

The smartwatch comes with interactive and unique watch faces that users can customize to fit their needs. The watch faces can automatically change based on their location so they can set a more modern watch face for when they’re at the office and a fitness-focused option when they’re at the gym. The possibilities are endless.

Verizon’s Wear24 smartwatch is powered by Android Wear 2.0 so it offers a wide variety of features such as music streaming with Google Play Music, Google Assistant, apps from Google Play, and more.

The Verizon Wear24 will be available in Gunmetal Black, Stainless Steel, and Rose Gold colors starting May 11th. Verizon will sell it in-store and online for $349.99. Customers can pick it up for $299.99 with a new 2-year activation or add it to an existing Verizon Plan for $5 monthly access.
