Solar-Powered Device Can Harvest Fresh Water From The Air

If you live in a particularly humid environment, there’s a good chance you might have a dehumidifier. Basically this sucks water out of the air to help make your surroundings less humid, which can be rather uncomfortable as it makes you feel like you’re sweating all the time.

Usually what happens with all that water is that it is throw away or used to water plants or maybe even flush the toilet, but what if you could drink that water instead? Scientists over at MIT and UC Berkeley might have come up with a device that does just that, and to top it off they have made it so that the device can be powered using solar energy.

According to Professor Omar Yaghi who is one of the scientists working on the project, he is calling this device a harvester of “personalized water”. He envisions a future where water could be supplied “off-grid” and there is enough to supply the needs of a household. It even works in not-so humid environments as it only requires about 20-30% humidity to work.

This device could potentially save a lot of lives especially in regions around the world where water isn’t as easily accessible, or it could also be used in times of drought. In a prototype that was built by mechanical engineer Evelyn Wang of MIT, it managed to produce about 2.8 liters of water using 2.2 pounds of metal-organic framework over a period of 12 hours.

Ad Blockers Could Make It Easier For Advertisers To Track You

Ad blockers are great if all you’re looking to do is reduce website loading times and to cut out annoying ads from websites. However if you’re using ad blockers hoping that it will protect your privacy and from being tracked by advertisers, it might not actually be as effective as you think or hope.

According to a group of French researchers (via The Next Web), they have found that using extensions like ad blockers could actually make it easier for advertisers to track you and your activities on the web. It’s not just ad blocking extensions that do this, but basically any kind of extension that uses identifying information could help make you easier to track.

This is because it creates a unique fingerprint for users which means that you might be easier to identify you than you think. TNW tested out the researcher’s tool and found that within seconds, it was able to tell what kind of plugins were being used, the networks that you’re logged into, and more.

According to the researchers, they have suggested that users should use Mozilla’s Firefox which is apparently less leaky compared to other browsers. Other suggestions also include logging out of social networks when not in use and also browsing in incognito mode helps too. However if your use of ad blockers is purely to block ads, then we guess maybe this is something you can live with.

Cadillac Might Have Solved A Self-Driving Car Problem WIth A Camera

When Tesla introduced Autopilot to its car, they made it pretty clear that Autopilot is not a self-driving feature. In fact to ensure that drivers kept their hands on the wheel, they made it so that the feature would not work unless drivers kept their hands on the wheel, otherwise they’d keep getting prompted.

However it seems that Cadillac might have another solution to the problem and this one involves the use of a camera according to a report from WIRED. What the company has done is install a camera directly on the steering wheel itself which will track the gaze of the driver. This means that you can’t really “trick” the system into thinking you’re paying attention.

Should it detect that the driver is not paying attention, it will prompt them with audio alerts, a buzzing seat, flashing lights, and if all else fails, the car will eventually turn on its hazard lights and slow to a stop and summons OnStar under the assumption that there is something wrong which explains why you’re not paying attention.

Speaking about the feature, Bryan Reimer who is an MIT researcher who studies driving behavior said, “I think it’s the only reasonable way to do it. I believe strongly that driver state sensing, though [sic] video-based metrics, is really pivotal to ensuring the driver is capable of regaining control.”

Your Smartphone’s Fingerprint Sensor Isn’t As Foolproof As You Think

Right now one of the common methods at securing a phone involves the use of a fingerprint sensor. Since no two people have the same fingerprint, it sounds like a pretty foolproof solution, doesn’t it? Unfortunately researchers at New York University and Michigan State University have found that isn’t exactly the case.

Basically what the team has done is generate a set of fake fingerprints that consists of digital composites of common features found in the fingerprints of people. Through the use of computer simulation, they were able to get a match at a rate of 65%, which is pretty alarming, although the researchers think that it might not be quite as successful in real-life.

Speaking to The New York Times, Nasir Memon, a computer science and engineering professor at New York University summed it up by saying, “It’s as if you have 30 passwords and the attacker only has to match one.” He adds that in theory, someone could create a glove with five different composite fingerprints and could potentially be successful with half of their attempts made.

For the record Apple responded to the article with regards to its Touch ID security. The report reads, “Apple said the chance of a false match in the iPhone’s fingerprint system was 1 in 50,000 with one fingerprint enrolled. Ryan James, a company spokesman, said Apple had tested various attacks when developing its Touch ID system, and also incorporated other security features to prevent false matches.”

Of course this doesn’t mean that your phone is in danger of being compromised, but it does highlight how the existing technology isn’t 100% foolproof. That being said, newer security methods are being explored, like what Samsung is doing with its iris scanning feature found in the Galaxy S8 (and the Note 7 where the feature made its debut).

Potentially 'undefeatable' ad blocker looks at content, not code

Facebook may have just lost its war on ad blockers. That is, if a new method developed by Princeton and Stanford researchers is implemented into a widely available blocker. Computer scientist Arvind Narayanan and his colleagues detailed unveiled a to…

The ‘Candy Crush’ Fashion Collection Actually Exists

While in-app purchases aren’t new, it’s safe to say that apps like Candy Crush proved just how lucrative the model is. It has spawned different iterations of the game, a TV show, and now it looks like if you’re a fan of the Candy Crush franchise, you will now be able to buy Candy Crush related fashion items.

This is thanks to a collaboration between the app’s developer King and fashion label Moschino. This was created in celebration of Candy Crush Saga turning five years old, and this fashion collection includes an iPhone case, bathing suits for both me and women, and there is even a backpack, but safe to say they do not come cheap. They are priced at $70, $205, $300, and $650 respectively.

These items are designed by Moschino’s creative director Jeremy Scott who might be a name familiar to some of you. This actually wouldn’t be the first time that Scott/Moschino have worked on video game-related merchandize. Back in 2015 they launched “Super Moschino” which included fashion items inspired by the Super Mario franchise.

In any case if you’re interested in wearing some Candy Crush swag, then head on over to Moschino’s website to place an order. Note that these items will be available until they’re sold out, so you’ll want to hurry if you want to get your hands on them.

Hearthstone Collegiate Championship Lets Players Win Free Packs

If you’re someone who follows the Hearthstone tournament scene pretty closely, you now have a chance at winning yourselves some free card packs. With the Hearthstone Collegiate Championship drawing to a close, it seems that Blizzard is letting spectators pick a champion that they can root for, and if you make the right pick you will be able to win some card packs.

According to Blizzard, “Follow the action and cheer your champion on to victory! You will receive Mean Streets Of Gadgetzan card packs as your champion advances in the tournament on their quest for ultimate triumph.” Note that the card packs are for the previous expansion and not the latest release which is the recently released Journey to Un’Goro.

We suppose in a way you are almost betting, except that you’re not actually putting anything on the line so we guess you won’t really lose out if you pick the wrong champion. Given that it has been estimated that Hearthstone will now be more expensive to play if you were to buy card packs direct, being able to win yourself a couple of additional card packs might be a good way to score some freebies and save some money. To find out more about the championship hit up Blizzard’s website for the details.

Sony Displaces Nikon As No. 2 Full-Frame Interchangeable Lens Camera In The US

When you think of cameras, there’s a good chance that brands such as Canon and Nikon come to mind. However it seems that Sony has been catching up because the company has recently announced that they are now the number 2 ranked in the US as far as the full-frame interchangeable lens camera market is concerned.

This was a position that was formerly held by Nikon which goes to show the inroads that Sony has been making in terms of appealing to photographers with their offerings. Sony is attributing this success to their “key models” which includes the Sony A7R II and the A7S II, both of which are of the mirrorless variety, meaning that they are more compact that a traditional full-frame DSLR.

There have been quite a few famed photographers who have publicly announced their plans in the past to make a full conversion to Sony’s mirrorless lineup because like we said, the ability to have a full-frame camera in compact body does have its appeal, especially for those who’d rather not lug around large DSLR cameras.

According to Neal Manowitz, VP of Digital Imaging at Sony North America, “Our commitment to the industry is stronger than ever. We are always listening to our customers, combining their feedback with our intense passion for innovation to deliver products, services and support like no other.”

Possible HTC U ‘Ocean’ Photo Leaked

The HTC U Ultra was announced earlier this year but despite its somewhat high-end specs, the handset wasn’t exactly what you would consider to be compelling. Sure it had the chops, but its features weren’t particularly exciting especially in the face of other flagships like the LG G6 and the Samsung Galaxy S8.

However back in March we heard that HTC was readying a new handset codenamed “Ocean” that would simply be known as the HTC U, and now thanks to a recent tweet by Evan Blass, alleged photos of the upcoming phone have leaked online, although unfortunately the leaks don’t really tell us much.

What they do tell us is that HTC will be maintaining a similar design language as before, which as you can see basically points at a very glossy finish, not that it’s a bad thing. As for features, one of the key features we’ve heard is how the phone will sport a touch-sensitive frame.

The feature would basically allow users to swipe along the frame to control the phone, squeeze it, or perform other gestures that might not necessarily require users to interact with the display. We’re not 100% sure how it works, but it does sound intriguing. No word on when the phone will be launched, but leaked photos/renders does seem to hint that we could be due for an announcement in the near future.
