There's A Major Downside To Going Dairy-Free

If you’re drinking almond and coconut milk instead of dairy, listen up.

A recent U.K. survey from the National Osteoporosis Society shows that one fifth of young adults are reducing dairy or going dairy-free, possibly because of fad dieting trends and not necessarily because it’s the advice of a doctor.

But experts warn that cutting dairy could have potential health consequencesYoung people may be slashing crucial nutrients like calcium during a period when their body needs it most.

“Diet in early adulthood is so important because by the time we get into our late 20s it is too late to reverse the damage caused by poor diet and nutrient deficiencies and the opportunity to build strong bones has passed,” Susan Lanham-New, head of nutritional science at the University of Surrey and clinical advisor at the National Osteoporosis Society in the U.K, said in a statement.

Dairy-based items like yogurt, milk and cheese are typically the easiest way for children and young adults to get their recommended amounts of calcium and Vitamin D. These vital nutrients help with bone growth and tooth health. The nutrients in dairy also help with cholesterol and blood pressure in adulthood.

Adolescents in the U.S., defined as age 9 to 18, should get approximately 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day, according to the National Institute of Health. The recommended goal is about three servings of dairy daily.

There are plenty of perfectly sound reasons for giving up dairy products, as a lifestyle choice or for physical health. It just means you’ll have to be mindful of incorporating other calcium-rich foods into your diet, such as broccoli and kale or fortified options like tofu and cereal.

Another striking finding from the survey? How young people are making dietary choices. Those under the age of 25 were the most likely to follow health and fitness bloggers on social media, suggesting they may get their nutrition information from these sources.

While there’s nothing wrong with consulting the internet for tips and tricks (hi, readers!), information from the web should never take the place of specific medical advice. It’s always a good idea to ask a doctor about any major diet changes. Even if it’s just cutting back on dairy.

House Democrats Rake In Record Donations Amid Trump Backlash

WASHINGTON ― The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised a record-breaking $31 million in the first quarter of the year, the House Democrats’ campaign arm announced on Friday.

The organization’s historic haul, first reported by the Hill, includes $13.2 million in donations in March alone. But the DCCC still trails its Republican counterpart, the National Republican Congressional Committee, which raised $36 million in the first quarter.

The DCCC, nonetheless, massively outpaced the NRCC in online fundraising over the same period, bringing in around $13.7 million compared with the Republicans’ $1.7 million. The digital fundraising total came from 750,000 individual contributions, including gifts from 121,000 first-time donors, according to the DCCC.

The Democratic campaign arm touted the strong fundraising performance, including the online figures, as evidence that the backlash to President Donald Trump is lifting Democratic fortunes.

“Our record-breaking fundraising is a clear reflection of the urgency that people have towards fighting back against a reckless Republican agenda, including ongoing efforts to rip apart the Affordable Care Act,” DCCC spokesman Tyler Law said in a press release. “The massive amount of small-dollar, online donations – much of which came from first time donors – provides another clear sign that the grassroots energy is behind House Democrats this cycle.”

The DCCC’s announcement follows other signs that Democrats are benefiting from high enthusiasm within their base in the wake of Trump’s election. ActBlue, the website that processes donations to Democratic candidates and causes, reported last week that it had processed more than $111 million in online donations in the first quarter of the year. The figure is four times the total haul in the first quarter of 2015, the last non-election year.

Special elections for several open House seats and dozens of posts in state legislatures give Democrats a chance to capitalize on this excitement long before the 2018 midterm elections.

In a special election to fill the congressional seat in Kansas’ deep-red 4th district last Tuesday, the Democratic candidate James Thompson lost by just 7 percentage points, after Republican Mike Pompeo, who is now CIA director, won by more than 30 points in 2016. Thompson benefited from a last-minute infusion of $200,000 raised by readers of the liberal site Daily Kos and other activists, but got only a modicum of assistance from the DCCC.

Democrats now have their hearts set on special elections in Montana and Georgia’s 6th district. The latter race, to fill a seat vacated by Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, has received significant investment from the DCCC and outside groups like Daily Kos.

Jon Ossoff, the leading 30-year-old Democratic candidate in Georgia’s 6th district, is hoping to win an outright majority in the first round of voting next Tuesday. Strong Democratic turnout in early voting looks good for him, but if he fails to gain a majority in the first round, where he is competing with many candidates, he will have to enter a runoff with a Republican on June 20. His chances in the runoff look considerably slimmer.

Joey McIntyre Reveals The Best Advice Donnie Wahlberg Ever Gave Him

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Joey McIntyre can’t help but feel thankful these days.

The singer and actor just launched his own scripted show on Pop TV, and he’s about to release an EP and kick off a tour with New Kids on the Block.

The TV series, dubbed “Return of the Mac,” finds McIntyre playing an exaggerated version of himself alongside his real-life wife, Barrett Williams, and their three children. Loosely based on his life, the show finds McIntyre trying to land a serious acting gig on TV, but settling for a talk show hosting role instead. It features a slew of guest stars, including January Jones, Joey Fatone and Jenny McCarthy. And it’s co-executive produced by a familiar face: fellow NKOTB member Donnie Wahlberg.

McIntyre, 44, says that Wahlberg, 47, was instrumental in getting the series off the ground.

“He was there when I needed him and he wasn’t when I didn’t need him. He would stay out of my hair,” he said jokingly during an interview with The Huffington Post on Build Series. “No, he was very supportive.”

But the friendship goes deeper than that.

“I’ve checked in with Donnie even without New Kids on different career stuff. He has a ton of experience, a ton of success. But I remember checking in with him in real life years ago and I asked him, ‘How do you do it?’ I maybe came from an audition or something like that. I didn’t think he’d have this magical answer but he said, ‘You gotta take your lumps.’ It was so simple but it was pretty wise,” McIntyre said. “No matter what you do you kind of got to go with the ups and downs and take your hits and take your lumps.”

McIntyre and Wahlberg will soon spend a lot more time together when the New Kids kick off their tour this summer with Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul. While at Build, McIntyre got emotional thinking about the longevity of the group, which formed more than 30 years ago.

“It happens, it creeps up on you,” he said about getting sentimental. “Because you get to do what you love to do with people you love and people you’ve grown with and people you learn from. And I know that we kind of represent the getaway for people. And the older you get you realize those getaways are important.”

It’s part of the reason their new EP is called “Thankful.” Due May 12, the album will feature five tracks ― all with a pop, soul and R&B vibe.

And for any fans wondering about NKOTB’s future, it sounds like McIntyre, Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jon and Jordan Knight are in it for the long haul.

“We’re super grateful … The gratitude that we have … It’s easy to get emotional about it,” McIntyre said. “We’re family. Us and our fans are family. We’ve been through a lot together. And because of them [the fans], we’re not going anywhere.”

Thankful indeed.

Ellen Enlists Bradley Cooper To Defeat That Chicken Nugget Kid On Twitter

Everyone please turn you attention to this pressing global crisis that demands your immediate assistance: Ellen DeGeneres’ Twitter game.

Yes, the queen of daytime needs your help to keep the title of the most retweeted tweet of all time, aka that selfie from the 2014 Academy Awards, and ward off her competition.

Earlier this week, high school student Carter Wilkerson edged closer to closing the gap between himself and DeGeneres after his tweet to score a year of free Wendy’s chicken nuggets received 2.8 million and counting retweets.

DeGeneres is still ahead by a couple hundred thousand, but enlisted the help of Bradley Cooper, who took the famous Oscar selfie, to encourage her fans to show her some more Twitter love.

“If you think I’m going to lose that record to some chicken nugget kid, you are out of your cluckin’ mind,” she said on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Friday, later adding in her and Cooper’s PSA, “I was sitting on Meryl Streep’s lap for an uncomfortably long time.”

Choose your side and retweet below.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Chloë Sevigny Want You To Help Fight Climate Change

Fighting climate change isn’t a niche interest for environmental activists ― it’s the patriotic thing for all Americans do to. At least, that’s the message of a new video from the Sierra Club meant to inspire people to march in the streets and raise awareness about the issue.

The Sierra Club released “We Hold These Truths” on Friday to promote the People’s Climate March, a nationwide protest planned for April 29.

In the short video, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Chloë Sevigny read a call to action cobbled together from sections of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, “God Bless America,” the inscription on the Statue of Liberty and the Oath of Office of the President of the United States.

The video shows stunning scenes of the country’s natural beauty and industrial might, as well as destruction and devastation ― a flood swallowing a neighborhood, a boy struggling to breathe as a factory belches smoke, a polar bear losing its home as sea ice melts around it.

“Defending this land and its people has always been the American thing to do,” Sevigny says.

The video encourages viewers to participate in the march later this month, which was organized by groups who planned a similar event in 2014. More than 400,000 people, including Gordon-Levitt, attended the 2014 People’s Climate March in New York City.

Back then, Gordon-Levitt said, he wasn’t convinced that a protest could spur actual change.

“I was pleasantly surprised and encouraged to see it lead to real legislation that could help make a difference,” he said in a statement. “Now those policies are under attack. So it’s time to march again.”

There are climate marches planned in dozens of cities around the U.S., including Washington, D.C., as well as in a few other countries. Activists will rally for “clean energy jobs and climate justice” and call out President Donald Trump’s attacks on environmental protections and the backwards steps he has taken on reducing climate change

Darren Aronofsky ― director of “Black Swan” and “Requiem for a Dream” ― executive produced the video. He is also a member of the Sierra Club Foundation’s board.

“The climate crisis is the greatest threat to our country,” Aronofsky said. “Our voices must be heard.”
