Ellen DeGeneres, Matt Bomer and Billy Eichner are just three of the LGBTQ celebrities who are speaking out against reports that gay men are being detained, attacked and even killed in the Russian region of Chechnya.

On April 1, a Moscow-owned Russian opposition newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, cited federal law enforcement officials who said more than 100 gay men, ranging in ages from 16 to 50, had been detained  “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such.”

The initial reports were deemed “absolute lies and disinformation” by a spokesman for Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, according to The New York Times. But on April 4, a second Novaya Gazeta report cited a source who told the newspaper that the Muslim-majority region’s anti-LGBTQ efforts include Nazi-like concentration camps

The Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD and Human Rights First were among the many advocacy organizations to call for U.S. officials to condemn the reports. Celebrities, too, were quick to react to the news, which began picking up steam stateside on Tuesday.

Eichner, who has never shied away from getting political on social media, tweeted:

DeGeneres, Bomer and pop star Troye Sivan also chimed in, sharing links to the news with their own thoughts on Twitter.

Other notables offered similar takes.

Unfortunately, details of the alleged detainments are sketchy at best. Among those to downplay the controversy was Chechen activist Kheda Saratova, who is on Kadyrov’s human rights council. In a Russian radio interview cited by The Guardian, Saratova said she hadn’t had “a single request” on the issue, but also also implied that there weren’t any gay people in the region at all.

“In our Chechen society, any person who respects our traditions and culture will hunt down this kind of person without any help from authorities,” Saratova said, “and do everything to make sure that this kind of person does not exist in our society.”

Another Black Teen Stunts On Admissions Season, Gets Into 7 Ivy Leagues

Black students throughout the U.S. have been making headlines with their multiple acceptances at top colleges and universities. Brooklyn teen Nina Uziogwe is the latest high school senior to make the news for being wanted by several elite schools.

The Stuyvesant High School senior, who plans to study medicine, was accepted to Harvard, Dartmouth, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Princeton and Yale.

The Nigerian teen took multiple AP courses throughout high school and has also participated in a number of extracurricular activities, according to News12 Brooklyn

Uziogwe told News12 that the financial aid packages she’s offered will be the main determinant of the school she decides on.

Recently, The Huffington Post also reported on a Chicago teen who was accepted to 23 HBCUs, black quadruplets who were all accepted into Yale, Harvard and other top schools, a Nigerian teen Ifeoma White-Thorpe, who received acceptance letters from every Ivy League in the nation.

Class of 2021 is looking black and gifted.

The Great Reason You Might Be Bored By Candice Huffine's Elle Cover

Elle revealed six cover stars for its May swimsuit issue this week. They include Bella Hadid, Jasmine Tookes, Hailey Baldwin, Elsa Hosk, Maria Borges and Candice Huffine

Huffine’s appearance marked the model’s first American magazine cover, and the news garnered headlines like, “Model Candice Huffine Hopes Her New Elle Cover Shows Women ‘Their Size Is Not an Indication of What Is Possible’” and “Here’s Why Candice Huffine’s Elle Cover Is So Important.”

Huffine herself even told the glossy that she hopes her appearance can help all women “know that they can become anything that they want and they can have anything they want in this life,” adding, “and their size is not an indication of what is possible for them.”

To be honest, though, this isn’t the first time a plus-size model has graced a cover recently. And that’s a great thing.

At this point, featuring a curvy model doesn’t seem all that revolutionary ― and that’s what’s most exciting about this cover.

Huffine’s appearance signals yet another step forward in the move toward a more inclusive industry. And with an increasing number of brands and magazines following suit, we might dare to say that this is all just becoming … normal. And really, isn’t that the goal? Isn’t true inclusivity achieved when we don’t feel the need to keep talking about it all the time?

If you’re not convinced, consider some of the other magazines that have featured curvy models on their covers in recent memory. There was the Ashley Graham Sports Illustrated cover seen around the world, which paved the way for her to appear on Cosmopolitan, Vogue U.K. and Vogue U.S.

Women’s Running featured plus-size models Erica Schenk, Nadia Aboulhosn and Huffine on its covers over the past two years. Iskra Lawrence starred on Self Magazine’s last-ever print issue. There’s still plenty of room to grow, but it certainly feels refreshingly more common.

Add that to the fact that as Refinery29 pointed out, Huffine is the only cover star whose full body is showing and nowhere does it mention that she is “curvy” or “plus-size.”

This is the best kind of boring we could ever imagine.
