Up To 50,000 Cases Of Cholera Expected In Somalia By This Summer: WHO

GENEVA, April 13 (Reuters) – More than 25,000 people in famine-threatened Somalia have been struck by cholera or acute watery diarrhea and the deadly epidemic should double by this summer, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Friday.

The United Nations is already racing to avoid a repeat of famine in the drought-hit Horn of African nation where more than 250,000 people died of starvation in 2011.

Cholera, which is endemic in Somalia, is an acute diarrhoeal disease that can kill within hours if left untreated. Malnourished children under five years are especially vulnerable.

Already 25,424 infected people have been identified since the start of the year, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said by email, adding: “These numbers are projected to increase to 50,000 by summer.”

The case fatality rate for the disease, spread by contaminated food or water, is already 2.1 percent in Somalia, twice the emergency threshold, he said. At least 524 deaths have been recorded.

Cholera can be successfully treated with oral rehydration solution. Severe cases will need rapid treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics, according to the WHO.

Death rates among Somalis infected with cholera now reach 14.1 percent in Middle Juba and 5.1 percent in Bakool, U.N. spokesman Jens Laerke told a news briefing.

“We still have 2.9 million people in level 3 and 4, level 4 being the step just before we declare a famine,” Laerke said, referring to the U.N. classification. “So almost 3 million in those critical and crisis emergency levels.”

The center of cholera outbreak is Baidoa, David Akopyan, U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) deputy country director for Somalia, told the briefing by telephone from the capital Mogadishu.

Thirteen of Somalia’s 18 regions are affected, he said.

Some 500,000 Somalis have been internally displaced, many in search of water, as well as some 3 million pastoralists who have lost 70 percent of their livestock due to drought, he said.

Akopyan, asked about famine, replied: “We are not exactly there, the fear is that in two months if things are not scaled up we will get there … Hopefully famine will be prevented.”

Jeff Probst Condemns 'Survivor' Contestant's Outing On National TV

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

Survivor” host Jeff Probst was as shocked as viewers when contestant Jeff Varner outed fellow contestant Zeke Smith as transgender in Wednesday’s episode. And not in a good way.

During a tribal meeting, Varner accused Smith of deceiving the others, asking, “Why haven’t you told anyone that you’re transgender?” Other castaways quickly and passionately came to Smith’s defense, before voting Varner off the island.

“I cannot imagine anyone thinking what was done to Zeke was OK on any level, under any circumstances,” Probst told Entertainment Weekly before the shocking moment aired on national TV.

The host, who said he knew Smith was transgender shortly after casting him, voiced his complete disapproval for Varner’s actions, which prompted a statement from GLAAD, the LGBTQ advocacy group. As Probst told EW:

In 34 seasons of ‘Survivor,’ I have rarely, if ever, personally commented on what is said or done in the game. But this is a unique situation that falls outside the normal boundaries. I cannot imagine anyone thinking what was done to Zeke was OK on any level, under any circumstances, and certainly not simply because there was a million dollars on the line. I think the response from the tribe, as it so often does, mirrors what the vast majority of society will feel. You just don’t do that to someone.

Given plenty of time between filming “Survivor” and the episode’s debut, Smith has attempted to make sense of the outing. Writing in a lengthy heartfelt essay for The Hollywood Reporter that he is “not wild” about the reveal, and Varner’s reasons for it, Smith concludes that it ultimately had “nothing to do with me and everything to do with him.”

“In reality, by being Zeke the dude, I am being my most honest self — as is every other transgender person going about their daily lives,” Smith wrote.

Probst, who has hosted the show since it’s 2000 debut, believes Varner regrets his comment ― which was unprecedented in the show’s history.

“It was one of the most raw and painful studies of human behavior that has ever happened on ‘Survivor,’” the host told EW.

Probst went on to praise Smith’s composure after Varner’s comment. Making the best out of the situation, Smith said on the Wedesday night episode, “Maybe there’s someone who’s a ‘Survivor’ fan, and me being out on the show helps someone else, and so maybe this will lead to a greater good.”

But the host said he also worried about Varner, who had just made “one of the worst decisions of his life.”

Varner met with the show’s full-time psychologist, Probst said, in the aftermath of the incident.

MacBook Pro Owners Reporting ‘Popping’ Sounds

If you own Apple’s 2016 MacBook Pro, there seems to be quite a number of complaints regarding an issue that you might want to keep an eye and ear out for. According to these complaints, it seems that MacBook Pro owners are reporting a “popping” sound emanating from their laptops.

It is unclear as to why these sounds are occurring, and what might be setting it off as there does not appear to be any rhythm to these sounds and that they happen at random intervals. However it is noticed that they do occur when intensive tasks are happening, which has led to speculation that the sound might be coming from the hinges where the heat from the laptop is causing the glue or some plastic component to start to lose some of its integrity.

This seems to be more prevalent in the 15-inch MacBook Pro which has a heavier display. One customer writes, “I think the problem is actually from the hinges, as there is some natural flexing in the aluminum back of the display. I think the heat has affected the glue or some plastic mount in the display assembly.”

Another customer has since backed those claims up by saying, “I am able to constantly reproduce the sound by pressing right at the bottom of the screen assembly in the middle.” Now we can’t say for sure what the issue might be, but perhaps you’ll want to keep an eye out for it in the future.

Samsung Confirms Galaxy S8 Pre-Orders Exceed The Galaxy S7

2016 wasn’t too good of a year for Samsung. The company launched the Galaxy S7 handsets which were pretty well-received, but the disaster of the Note 7 pretty much seemed to overshadow the company’s achievements. Samsung is clearly hoping that the Galaxy S8 will fix that, and sure enough it has.

Speaking to the media, Samsung’s mobile business chief Koh Dong-jin revealed that the Galaxy S8 pre-orders have exceeded that of the Galaxy S7. While Koh did not provide any specific figures, last we heard that Galaxy S8 managed to rack up over 500,000 pre-orders within its first two days, and this is only the South Korean market.

This means that combining it with the other markets that the Galaxy S8 is available in, we’re probably looking at possibly over a 1million. It was previously suggested that the Galaxy S7’s pre-orders are about 5.5 times less than the Galaxy S8 which is actually surprising, but it just goes to show that customers don’t appear to be too fazed by last year’s Note 7 mishap, despite the fact that at that time it certainly looked like Samsung was in big trouble.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is set for a release on the 21st of April in various markets around the world, so for those who are interested you still have time to place your orders ahead of its release.

Samsung launches In-Traffic Reply App To Prevent Distracted Driving

When you’re driving and you get a notification, there’s a good chance that you’re probably really curious as to what it might be about. Could it be an important email that you’ve been waiting on all day? Or could it be a message from your family about something urgent? Or could it just be a friend saying hi?

We suppose you’ll only know when you check your phone, which if you’re driving is really something you shouldn’t do. Samsung Netherlands understands that which is why the company has launched an app (via SamMobile) called “In-Traffic Reply”. As the name suggests, this is an app that will reply your messages for you while you are driving.

It seems that the app is smart enough to know when you’re in the car and when the feature is enabled, it will automatically send the other person a message when they send you a text or call and let them know you’re driving and cannot reply at this time. Users can further customize the message if they want something a bit more personal.

The app appears to be in beta testing at the moment and we’re not sure if there are plans to bring it to other markets, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for its release for if and when it does.

Anbox runs Android apps on Linux just like native apps

One of the ironies of life is that while Android and Linux share a common core, there are more ways and tools to make Android apps run on Windows than they are to run them on Linux. That situation might soon change for the better now that Anbox has been made public. A year and a half in the making, … Continue reading

Tomi Lahren Tells Glenn Beck: 'Let Me Go'

Suspended conservative commentator Tomi Lahren spoke out against Glenn Beck and TheBlaze, demanding that the network release her from her contract.

“To my former employer I would just say let me go,” she told ABC’s “Nightline” on Wednesday night. “Let me move on.”

Lahren was taken off the air last month after a TV appearance in which she said she was pro-abortion rights. She was reportedly “banned permanently” by the network, where she remains under contract.

She told ABC that she was “disappointed.”

“But if this is the way that it is, let’s just part ways cleanly,” Lahren said. “I just want to work and have the freedom to put my voice out there and I want to interact with my fans and my followers.”

“Nightline” reported that Lahren is being paid through September, when her contract with The Blaze is up, and has been locked out of her Facebook page by the network.

Lahren is suing for wrongful termination, and describes herself as having been “fired.”

The Blaze sent a statement on Lahren to the Dallas News:

“It is puzzling that an employee who remains under contract (and is still being paid) has sued us for being fired, especially when we continue to comply fully with the terms of our agreement with her.”

In addition, Beck has said that Lahren was not taken off the air for her pro-abortion rights comments.

If you’re pro-choice, you can have a job at The Blaze,” he said on his show last month. “I don’t hire people who are sycophants or don’t have my opinion. I try to hire people who have a different opinion because I believe in being intellectually rigorous.”

But Lahren told “Nightline” she believes she’s been axed because of her views, and she seemed eager to get back to work… somewhere else.

“Something has been stripped from me, and that’s my ability to work, that’s my ability to have a voice,” she said. “That’s been taken from me, wrongfully. So I’m upset by it, I’m hurt by it, and I feel betrayed by it.”

“Nightline” said Lahren’s attorney sat in during in the interview.

Lahren also tweeted about the interview after it aired:

Senator Trolls Donald Trump Over Tax Returns With Nuggets-Style Retweet Plea

A senator is taking a page from a teenager’s viral campaign playbook in his ongoing battle to get President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) was seemingly inspired by Nevada 16-year-old Carter Wilkerson’s mission to gain 18 million retweets in exchange for a year of free chicken nuggets from Wendy’s. He employed a similar tactic to tackle Trump Wednesday:

By early Thursday, Wyden’s lighthearted request for Trump to share his tax returns if his post gained 18 million retweets had been shared more than 11,000 times.

It’s a long way off the 2.7 million retweets of Wilkerson’s post, which is tipped to soon become the most retweeted ever:

Trump had yet to reply to Wyden’s challenge. Even if Wyden’s post did somehow achieve 18 million retweets, it’s unlikely that the president would even pay it any attention.

It has succeeded, however, in bringing the issue of Trump’s tax returns to the fore once again ― as people across the country prepare to echo the call for his disclosure during a protest titled “The Tax March” this Saturday.
