Samsung Galaxy S8 Won’t Launch With Bixby Voice

While the Samsung Galaxy S8 is a pretty stunning phone, one of the key features of the handset would be the voice assistant platform Bixby that Samsung will be including in the handset’s software. Given the fierce competition with Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, and Alexa, Bixby represented Samsung’s second chance at the voice assistant market.

However it seems that the second chance won’t be launched together with the handset. As confirmed by Axios by a Samsung representative, it seems that Samsung will not be launching Bixby Voice with the Galaxy S8. Instead the rest of Bixby’s features will be part of the launch, save for the actual voice option which we have to admit is probably the portion that everyone is most curious about.

The good news is that this is merely a delay as the feature will be arriving later this spring. According to Samsung, “Key features of Bixby, including Vision, Home and Reminder, will be available with the global launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 on April 21. Bixby Voice will be available in the U.S. on the Galaxy S8 later this spring.”

Samsung remained mum on why the feature was delayed, but as Axios pointed out, demos of the feature had previously failed to work as intended so maybe Samsung is trying to fine tune it before it is released. In the meantime Samsung has confirmed that Bixby will eventually expand its support for other languages later this year.

Your Phone’s Motion Sensors Can Apparently Give Away Your PIN

The point of PINs and passwords is to protect your device or account being accessed by someone else. You might think that putting a PIN on your phone is a great way to prevent hackers or someone else from getting into your phone, but as it turns out your phone might have already given you away.

According to security researchers at the Newcastle University (via Engadget), they have found that the motion sensors built into your phone can apparently give away your PINs and passwords. How, you ask? Basically through its movements as you type away at the virtual keyboard while you enter the information.

Apparently these motions create some pretty distinct patterns that have been proven to be relatively accurate. Based on the tests conducted by the researchers, they managed to crack 4-digit PINs with an accuracy of 70% on the first guess, and 100% accuracy on the fifth guess, which is actually alarmingly scary.

Of course this means that hackers would need access to the data recorded by your phone’s motion sensors, which would most likely require some kind of exploit on your phone to be taken advantage of. Thankfully companies like Apple and Firefox have patched their software so that sensor data cannot be collected, while Google is said to be aware of the issue and are looking into a fix.

Twitter Testing Out A Bot That Listens To Suggestions And Complaints

Sometimes trying to get customer service to get back to you can be a bit tricky and it can take a while. Or maybe you’re not even sure where to look. However the good news for Twitter users is that it looks like the social network is testing out a new feature in the form of a bot. This is where users will be able to directly send messages to the bot for complaints and suggestions.

According to a report from BuzzFeed News, it seems that this feature is currently being tested out so if it doesn’t function properly or it isn’t quite as feature-rich as you are hoping, not to worry as we’re sure that it is being worked on as we speak. Twitter plans on seeing how its users engage with the bot and will tweak it accordingly.

In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News by a Twitter spokesperson, “We’re testing a new @Support DM tool to make it easier for people to get help with certain support issues, directly on Twitter. This is a very early test and will be limited in scope for the time being.” At the moment the bot focuses on five categories which includes Accounts, Abuse, Impersonalization, General, and #TwitterTips.

As you can see in the screenshot above, users will be able to choose from various categories in which they want to make their report, and from there the bot will reply based on your selection. No word on when it will roll out in full, but presumably this will be based on how well-received the feature is.

The Nikon D7500 Has Been Officially Launched

The other day thanks to a leaked image, it was revealed that Nikon had a new DSLR in the works by the name of the Nikon D7500. If you are in the market for a new DSLR camera, then you might be interested to learn that shortly following the leak, Nikon has officially taken the wraps off the Nikon D7500.

According to Nikon, the specs of the D7500 include a 20.9-megapixel DX-format sensor, an ISO range of 100-51,600, and 8fps of continuous shooting. It will also support 4K video capture at various frame rates which include 24, 25, and 30fps. Unfortunately for those looking for that buttery smooth 60fps, you’d be out of luck as far as 4K video is concerned. However given that 30fps is already pretty decent, you should be able to get by.

The camera will also be powered by the Expeed 5 processor which is used by the Nikon D500, and there will also be a 3.2-inch LCD display that can tilt, along with an OLED EVF. There will also be Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity for those who like the ability to transfer photos and videos without the need for cables.

As for pricing, the Nikon D7500 will be a relatively affordable model for those who are looking for a DSLR. The body-only model will be sold for $1,250 while the version with a kit lens will go for $1,750. Unfortunately there is no mention as to when the D7500 will be made available.

Google AutoDraw tries to make sense of your doodles

They say a picture paints a thousand words, but not everyone is confident they can even paint a picture at all. Almost all, however, would concede they can at least draw stick figures and shapes. The problem is that they don’t think they represent the real thing they wanted to draw. Just as we “google” things we don’t know these … Continue reading

Western Digital G-DRIVE USB-C bring 10TB storage to MacBooks

The new MacBooks, especially the new MacBook Pros, are probably the most controversial MacBooks yet. The smaller models ditched all but one USB-C port while the Pros ditched all ports in favor of all Thunderbolt 3’s. That said, the decision had one positive side effect on the computing industry as a whole. More and more accessory and peripheral makers are … Continue reading

Ex-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Plans To Run Again

LONDON, April 12 (Reuters) – Ex-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad submitted his name on Wednesday for registration as a candidate in Iran’s presidential election in May, state media reported.

The move by the former hardline president was seen as a challenge to the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had ordered him not to run.

Registration for the May 19 election started on Monday and will last five days, after which entrants will be screened for their political and Islamic qualifications by a vetting body, the Guardian Council.

Jimmy Kimmel Rips Sean Spicer For Breaking Key Rule Of 'Press Secretary School'

Jimmy Kimmel unleashed Sean Spicer’s inner monologue on Tuesday.

After the White House press secretary falsely claimed during a press briefing that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons, Kimmel imagined just what was going through Spicer’s mind as he was saying it.

“Did I just defend Hitler?” said the spoof voice inside Spicer’s head. “At press secretary school, the one rule was ‘never defend Hitler.’”

Kimmel later quipped that Spicer, who later walked back his comments, may soon become “the only press secretary who needs a press secretary.”

David Letterman's Pie-Loving Mom, Dorothy Mengering, Dead At 95

Dorothy Mengering, the mother of David Letterman who made occasional appearances during his time hosting “Late Night,” died Tuesday. She was 95.

From her kitchen in Carmel, Indiana, Mengering ― known simply as “Dave’s Mom” ― showed up often via satellite to play a heartwarming pie guessing game, in which her son guessed which types of pie she’d baked. With her sweet temper and charming sincerity, she became an audience favorite.

Letterman also put his mother to work as a foreign correspondent of sorts for the show during the Winter Olympics in 1994, 1998 and 2002. In the first, held in Lillehammer, Norway, she interviewed then–first lady Hillary Clinton, asking a hard-hitting question about the Connecticut speed limit, which nabbed her an invite to the White House.

“After Lillehammer, I couldn’t believe how it all took off,” Mengering told The New York Times about her role on “Late Night” and taste of fame after releasing her cookbook, Home Cookin’ with Dave’s Mom, in 1996. (You can find it on Amazon.)

She went on: “I think it’s about the idea of mom and of a family. People are eager for families to be like they used to be. Even though there are lots of working moms and single-parent families now, you can still be a family in spite of the size and form it takes.”

As Letterman, who turned 70 on Wednesday, prepared to retire from his longtime role as host in 2015, he aired a special Mother’s Day montage honoring Mengering. (Catch the clip, which includes a peek at Dave’s Mom’s beer-stocked fridge, below.)

Late Tuesday, Letterman’s successor, Stephen Colbert, shared a heartfelt note of condolence over Twitter about Mengering, saying he feels “so grateful that Dave shared her with us.”
