Now You Can Learn 'Game Of Thrones' Fictional Language… For Real

Even the most dedicated “Game of Thrones” fan probably isn’t fluent in Dorthraki or High Valyrian, the two fictional languages spoken in George R. R. Martin’s epic series. But that’s about to change.

The University of California at Berkeley is offering a summer class in the Dorthraki’s native tongue. And it’s led by Berkeley alum, linguist David J. Peterson, who created both languages for the critically acclaimed HBO show.

Titled “The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention,” Peterson’s class will meet for four days a week during the May 22 – June 30 summer term, according to Berkeley News.

The show’s seventh season is scheduled to return on July 16. And actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister on the show, confirmed this week that many of the leaks about the show’s upcoming season are real.

“Every year, there are huge spoilers online where people find out real stuff and they will post it, and you go, ‘Oh my God, they just spoiled the whole season online!’ But then, because there’s 10,000 other spoilers out there, they’re not real. It just gets lost in the shuffle,” he told HuffPost. “So, it’s all out there by the way … if you can find it.”

This Is How Much Money Food Bloggers Can Actually Make

Pinch of Yum is a successful food blog. But just how successful monetarily? It’s a question we all wonder about food blogs.

Turns out this particular blog is successful enough to be a full-time job for the husband-and-wife team behind it ― plus staff.

Lindsay and Bjork Ostrom, the duo behind the blog, have working on Pinch of Yum since 2009 and they made it their full time job in 2014. The bloggers post beautiful photos of delicious-looking food that inspires us to get back into the kitchen. And they do one additional thing that not many other food bloggers do: they post all of their earnings and expenses online, for everyone to see.

How exactly food bloggers make a living has long felt like a mystery, but thanks to the Ostroms we can see precisely how they function as a business. They make money mostly from ads and sponsored content, but have other avenues for revenue from Amazon partnerships and their e-book.

The Ostroms began posting the blog’s earnings in August 2011, when they made a measly $21.97 that month. They began the public project to see if they could make money food blogging (which they called the Food Blogging Money Making Experience). Folks, they succeeded.

If you go through the months with them over the years, you can see the earnings grow ― sometimes exceeding over $90,000 in one single month. For real.

But of course, more money means more problems and by that we mean expenses. The aforementioned month (November 2016), when Pinch of Yum made $95,197.34, their expenses were $28,505.27. So their profit was closer to $66,692.07 ― not bad for one month’s work.

This is how much they earned during a 12-month period (from December 2015- November 2016): $802,144.55

This is how much their expenses totaled up to during that same time period: $293,014.38

This was their 12-month profit: $483,883.51

We broke it down month by month below, so you can see for yourself. We started in December 2015 and ended with November 2016, in order to show a 12-month earning. (November 2016 is the most recent month in which they’ve released an earnings report.) Here are the numbers.

December ‘15

Income: $86,884.12

November ‘16

Of course, not every blog is this successful ― and possibly some blogs are even more profitable ― but this profit comes only with hard work, determination, talent and a love of good food.

Here's The Real Reason You've Got That One Random Chin Hair

Chin hairs are like stars. You don’t always see them, but every so often they emerge to surprise you in all their bold glory.

Facial hair, of course, is no big deal, but we have always wondered what the deal is with that one thick, long hair that seems to appear out of nowhere, just begging to be plucked.

We took a break from staring at our faces in magnified mirrors to call on the experts. First and foremost, we wanted to know what makes those individual chin hairs different from our thinner, finer facial hair.

Dr. Heidi Waldorf, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital, broke it down for HuffPost.

“These are terminal hairs versus the vellus hairs on the rest of the face,” she said. “Hair differs in its susceptibility to testosterone. Beard and mustache hair are more susceptible. Since [the chin is] considered a masculine area, when hair appears in that area in women, it is referred to as hirsutism.”

Hirstuism is a medical condition that is often caused by polycystic ovary syndrome and certain medications that cause excessive growth. But if you have just one or two terminal hairs that appear in the same place each time they grow, you can usually chalk it up to our unique, complicated bodies.

“Hair follicles have a mind of their own,” Angela Lamb, director of the Westside Mount Sinai Dermatology Faculty Practice, director of dermatology at the Institute of Family Health and an assistant dermatology professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told HuffPost. “Sometimes one or more hairs will grow in thicker or fuller than others. This is the same reason why you may notice different hairs on your scalp that are curlier in some parts more than others.”

It’s not totally random, though. Like most other things in life, you have genetics to thank for the amount of hair that grows in on your face.

“Many cases are hereditary,” Lamb said. “If the women in your family grow facial hair, you may as well. It has to do with how your hair follicles respond to androgens [male sex hormones, like testosterone] that are present in all women’s bodies.”

And while we would bet money that those individual chin hairs grow in at an exponentially faster rate than the other hair on our bodies, Lamb maintains they come in at the same speed. She also assured us that there is no scientific evidence to back up any claims that plucking these hairs makes them grow in thicker.

Waldorf did say, however, that the reason it may appear longer is thanks to the different ways hair grows on the body.

“Hair growth differs in different areas of the body, as does the growth cycle,” she said. “Which is why scalp hair generally grows longer than eyelash hair.”

Both Waldorf and Lamb state that there is no danger in plucking these hairs, aside for the potential risk for infection that comes with plucking any hair. And Waldorf explained that while you don’t ever develop new follicles, more vellus hairs can be stimulated by hormones to become terminal hairs as you get older. “As women age, estrogen levels go down and natural testosterone goes unopposed.”

As far as methods of removal go, both doctors referred to the same three options:

“Laser hair removal, electrolysis, and a topical prescription call Vaniqa that causes hairs to grow in thinner and slower,” Lamb said. “These are not true ‘preventions’ but rather elimination techniques.”

Much to our dismay, Lamb offered no scientific explanation for why those hairs are so darn satisfying to pluck. But what she did say is that plucking is “an easy compulsive behavior that can be deeply satisfying.”

Sounds about right.

The Ultimate Lazy Person's Guide To Making Pancakes On A Sheet Tray

Mornings are rough, but breakfast makes them easier ― especially when that breakfast is pancakes. And now, to make our fluffy, maple syrup-soaked meal even sweeter, there’s an easier method to making them than in the pan. Say hello to sheet pan pancakes:

Sheet pan pancakes incorporate the ease of the sheet pan meal with the beloved qualities of pancakes. They’re easy to make ― simpler than the traditional kind because you don’t have to spend any time sitting over the stove and there’s no risk of flopping a flip ― and they’re even easier to clean up.

Best part is: you can have a seat and sip your coffee as you wait for the timer to go off.

Sheet pan pancakes take roughly 10 minutes to cook, in a 425 degree Fahrenheit oven, so they’re quick. Watch the video above to see how it’s done ― and head on over to Hello, Wonderful for more information.

Listen To Katy Perry's New Single For A Smorgasbord Of Awkward Food Euphemisms

Katy Perry’s next studio album still doesn’t have a release date, even after TMZ spotted her appearing to tease its debut earlier this month. But we seem to be creeping closer. On Friday, the singer debuted another single, titled “Bon Appetit.”

A few months after her last release, the politically aware “Chained to the Rhythm,” this new collaboration with Migos is actually just one long string of conspicuous innuendos veering, perhaps inevitably, into “Muffin Top” territory. After one seemingly honest step in an admittedly cynical direction, Perry is retreating to the happily hollow slice of pop that she usually dominates. (Give it a listen below.)

“You could use some sugar / ‘Cause your levels ain’t right,” Perry croons, before reassuring us that it’s fine to “eat with your hands” because she’s “on the menu” ― wink.

“Fresh out the oven,” the singer continues, “Melt-in-your-mouth kind of lovin’.”

At least it comes with a meme. The cover art, depicting Perry’s disembodied head on a platter of assorted fruits, has been co-opted by fans on the internet, who’ve replaced her head with others, human and not.

For a likely “Bon Appetit” performance, tune into “Saturday Night Live,” where the singer will appear May 20.

The Morning After: Friday, April 28th 2017

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Nintendo Will Not Be Hosting A Live Press Conference At E3 2017

If you were hoping against hope that this year’s E3 will see Nintendo host a live press conference at the event, we guess you must be really optimistic because for the past few years, the company has not done anything like that, and unfortunately for fans who are hoping 2017 will be different, you will be disappointed.

Nintendo has recently confirmed that they will not be hosting a live press conference at E3 2017 later in June. Instead the company announced that they will be sharing their plans at a later date, presumably via a Nintendo Direct video or maybe through Treehouse, but either way we guess a live press conference is pretty much off the table.

It will be interesting to see what the company could announce at E3 either way. Given that the Switch has already been launched and we already know what major games that the company has planned for the future, such Super Mario Odyssey and Super Smash Bros., we have to wonder what else Nintendo has planned for their future.

Either way this is something we’ll just have to wait and see for ourselves, so be sure to check back with us later this June for the details. E3 2017 will be held from the 13th to the 15th of June, so mark those dates down.

Nintendo’s 1-2 Switch On Track To Ship 1 Million Units

The Nintendo Switch did not launch with many games, but this is pretty common whenever new consoles are launched. Now apart from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, another “key” game for the Switch console was the Nintendo-made title 1-2 Switch. Basically these are a bunch of games designed to show off what the console can do.

In a way it is also similar to how Wii Sports demonstrated how the Wii’s motion controllers could be used in gaming. Now we know that some gamers griped about 1-2 Switch at the start and were hoping for something more like Wii Sports, but as it turns out 1-2 Switch is doing pretty well. Nintendo’s latest financials revealed that they are on track to shipping 1 million copies of the game.

According to the company, “1-2-Switch, which was also released at the same time as Nintendo Switch, is likewise on track to ship one million units very soon. This title has become something of a hot topic due to the way it uses Nintendo Switch in some unconventional ways compared to other game systems.”

Nintendo’s financials also confirmed that third-party games were also doing quite well, such as Konami’s Super Bomberman R which managed to ship over 500,000 units. We should remind you guys that shipped units does not equate to units sold, although it does to a certain extent represent the demand for them, so either way it is still pretty good news.
