Bone More to Save Your Species, Maybe!

Boning is one of the most important actions in the evolutionary game. Who we bone ultimately decides what traits get passed on to the next generation, and whether we continue along as one species with a diverse set of traits, or if isolation of certain traits eventually turns us into multiple species. But what if we…

Apple Now Hiring More People To Work On Its Own Graphics Processor

It had long been rumored that Apple was thinking about moving its graphics processor design in-house and this was finally confirmed officially a couple of weeks ago when the company decided to stop working with UK-based Imagination Technologies which previously worked with Apple on its GPU designs. Now that it has made this decision, Apple has posted GPU-related job listings as it seeks to bring in more talent to work on its GPU designs.

The Telegraph spotted that Apple’s jobs board for the United Kingdom currently has 12 “Hardware Engineering” job postings. The positions are based at Apple’s UK Design Center with 11 of the 12 listings being connected to GPU design.

One such job posting is for an Engineering Program Manager who will be tasked with working in a “newly formed graphics design team” in order to work on the “definition of the architecture, spec, design, and verification of graphics IP from concept through to silicon.”

Apple certainly needs more talent within its ranks now that it’s going to work on its own graphics technology for future mobile devices. It will no longer work with Imagination Technologies on this even though the two have a partnership going back several years.

The company hasn’t explained why it’s cutting ties with Imagination Technologies but it’s possibly due to Apple’s inclination to get more control over the hardware that it puts out. Moving GPU design in-house will enable the company to further improve the technology as per its vision.

djay Pro For Windows 10 Released Officially

Algoriddim’s popular djay Pro app has long been available for iOS and Mac OS but now it’s finally available for Windows 10 as well. The djay Pro for Windows app has finally been released for everyone a couple of months after it was initially released in beta. The app brings a whole host of features and is optimized for touch input so it’s going to be very easy to use on devices like the Microsoft Surface Studio.

The djay Pro app provides the users with a full digital dj interface which includes up to four virtual decks, sound effects, waveform views, filters, and even a crossfader. Songs stored locally on the computer can be used or can even be pulled from Spotify’s catalog if you subscribe to the music streaming service.

While the apps are more or less the same in functionality across different platforms, one major feature is missing from the Windows 10 version. The video mixing feature that lets users blend visuals with their music is missing from its release.

Algoriddim, the developer, points out that the Windows 10 app hasn’t been built from the ground up for Microsoft’s platform. It has actually used the Windows Bridge feature to translate the djay Pro for iOS app into the one for Windows 10.

The djay Pro app for Windows 10 is live now and available for download from the Windows Store. It costs $49.99. Free trials are being offered.

Every Tornado Siren In Dallas Was Hacked And Fired Up At The Same Time

Sirens aren’t really used to broadcast the announcement of good news. They’re associated with emergency services and warnings. If you were in Dallas, Texas last week you might have heard quite a few of them go off, 18 minutes before midnight on Friday to be precise. That’s when every tornado siren in Dallas was hacked and fired up at the exact same time.

You can see in the video posted below exactly how it sounds like when all 156 emergency weather sirens go off in a city as big as Dallas. These sirens are meant to be used when the purpose is to warn residents about approaching storms or tornados.

Imagine what the city’s 1.3 million residents would have gone through close to midnight with all of the city’s tornado sirens blaring at the same time. They weren’t shut off soon, the sirens were actually blaring for more than an hour and an half which will certainly have terrified some residents who were unaware of what had actually happened.

City officials tried to get the situation under control and after about an hour of trying, they decided to “to unplug the radio systems and the repeater, and pretty much turn the siren system completely off.”

As for who is responsible for the hack, officials believe that it came from the Dallas area. The possibility that someone gained access to a hub that connects all sirens and executed this hack is very likely.

A remote hack has been ruled out.

Google’s AlphaGo Will Take On The World’s Best Go Player Next Month

Board game Go world champion and legend Lee Sedol was defeated by AlphaGo, Google DeepMind’s artificial intelligence, in a 4-1 five-game series last year and it’s going to take up the game once again to go on another best player of this game. Je Je is now considered the greatest Go player in the world and he’s AlphaGo’s next opponent.

The 19-year-old Chinese is now ranked number 1 worldwide so it’s going to be equally as shocking, if not more, should AlphaGo manage to win against him as well.

Jie has made a name for himself in the Go scene. He has been playing professionally since he was 10 and has even beaten Sedol on multiple occasions in the past. He actually won three finals against Sedol in the last three months leading up to the latter’s match with the AI software.

It’s now on Jie’s shoulders to win the contest for the sake of humankind. He’s going to go against AlphaGo in a three-game match at the Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen, China. Another game will take place in which five of China’s top Go players will try and beat AlphaGo.

The Future of Go Summit has been made possible due to a partnership between the China Go Association, Google, and the country’s government. It’s going to take place from May 23rd to May 27th.

Ford’s Hybrid Cop Car Handles Pursuits Just As Well

Police departments across the country have strict requirements to ensure that the cars the cops drive can actually perform as required should they be required to pursue a suspect. That’s one of the reasons why we haven’t really seen hybrid cars being inducted into the pursuit fleet even though some departments have been using them for non-pursuit duties like parking. Ford’s new cop car, called the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, is going to change that.

Ford says that this is the industry’s first pursuit-rated hybrid police car and that it’s going to make its debut in New York and Los Angeles. The company says that this hybrid car is going to provide an EPA-estimated combined gas mileage of 38 miles per gallon which is double that of today’s Police Interceptor that’s kitted with a 3.7 liter V6 engine.

This is the first hybrid sedan with full pursuit capabilities, meaning that it has been certified by police agencies to be tough enough to handle pursuits for longer periods at varying speeds and even being capable of tackling obstacles.

The car is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.0 liter engine hooked up to a single electric motor that takes its power from a lithium-ion battery. It can run in battery-only mode up to 60 mph and when required, it can switch to maximum performance mode in which the engine and battery work together at peak acceleration levels.

Police departments nationwide who order this car will get it next summer, according to Ford.
