McCain: Trump Team 'Partially To Blame' For Syria Chemical Attack

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he believes rhetoric from the Trump administration is “probably partially to blame” for Syria’s deadly chemical weapons attack on its civilians last week.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said just days before the attack that it would be up to the “Syrian people” to determine the “longer-term status” of President Bashar Assad, which may have signaled that Assad had nothing to fear from the U.S.

On Sunday, McCain said of the comments: “I think it probably was partially to blame” for the attack. And now Tillerson is “saying basically the same thing — after kind of contradicting himself then saying the same thing,” McCain told “Face the Nation” on CBS Sunday.

McCain also said he does “not agree” with Tillerson’s stance that the U.S. needs to concentrate on ISIS before it can look at Assad’s position. McCain said it’s imperative now to have a clear, carefully devised strategy for Syrian action.

“I believe that the United States of America can address both at the same time,” McCain said. “We can walk and chew gum. We have the capability to do both.”

He added: “I think what the president did” launching an airstrike last Thursday against Syria in response to the chemical attack “was an excellent first step. Now it’s vitally important we develop a strategy, we put that strategy in motion, and we bring about peace in the region.”

The Trump administration appeared divided in statements Sunday over exactly what its Syria policy is now. Tillerson said the airstrike was a one-time response to the chemical weapons attack and did not signal a shift in American policy. But United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said there can be no peace in Syria while Assad is in power.

Assad Allies Say U.S. Attack On Syria Air Base Crosses 'Red Lines'

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

A joint command center made up of the forces of Russia, Iran and militias supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday said the U.S. strike on a Syrian air base on Friday crossed “red lines” and it would respond to any new aggression and increase its support for its ally.

The United States fired dozens of cruise missiles at a Syrian air base on Friday from which it said a deadly chemical weapons attack had been launched earlier in the week, escalating the U.S. role in Syria and drawing criticism from Assad’s allies including Russia and Iran.

“What America waged in an aggression on Syria is a crossing of red lines. From now on we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is and America knows our ability to respond well,” said the statement published by the group on media outlet Ilam al Harbi (War Media).

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, meanwhile, blamed Russian inaction for helping fuel the chemical weapons attack it had reacted to, saying Moscow had failed to carry out a 2013 agreement to secure and destroy chemical weapons in Syria.

He said the United States expected Russia to take a tougher stance against Syria by rethinking its alliance with Assad because “every time one of these horrific attacks occurs, it draws Russia closer into some level of responsibility.”

Rebels and residents in northwestern Idlib province said jets believed to be Russian conducted eight raids on Sunday on the town of Khan Sheikhoun where the chemical attack took place but no casualties were reported.

Raids hit several other rebel-held towns including Saraqeb and Sarmin in the province, where the rebels and activists said incendiary bombs were dropped.

The death toll from an air strike on Saturday on the rebel-held town of Urum al-Joz in Idlib province rose to 19 people, including six children, activists and residents said.

In the southern city of Daraa, jets believed to be Russian escalated strikes on Free Syrian Army (FSA) and jihadist groups on Saturday and Sunday in an attempt to roll back their gains in the Manshiya district where battles have been raging for nearly two months.

PUTIN, ROUHANI SPEAK

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Hassan Rouhani said in a phone call that aggressive U.S. actions against Syria were not permissible and violated international law, the Kremlin said on Sunday.

The two leaders also called for an objective investigation into an incident involving chemical weapons in Syria’s Idlib and said they were ready to deepen cooperation to fight terrorism, the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.

Syrian army forces had been losing ground across the country until Russia intervened militarily in September 2015, propping up Assad and protecting its own interests in the region.

Assad has also drawn heavily on foreign Shi’ite militias sponsored by Iran, led by Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, for his most important gains since the Russian intervention.

The joint command center also said the presence of U.S troops in northern Syria where Washington has hundreds of special forces helping the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to oust Islamic State was “illegal” and that Washington had a long-term plan to occupy the area.

The regional alliance said the U.S. cruise missile strikes on a Syrian base which Washington said was involved in a chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians would not deter their forces from “liberating” all of Syrian territory.

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the U.S. missile strike was a “a strategic error, and a repeat of the mistakes of the past,” the state news agency IRNA reported.

“The Islamic Republic has shown that … it does not back off and its people and officials … do not retreat in the face of threats,” said Khamenei.

Many Syrians opposed to Assad’s rule consider Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iranian-backed troops as occupiers seeking to drive out mainly Sunni Syrians from the areas they live in. They hold Iran and its allies responsible for the displacement of millions outside the country.

They also see Russia as a foreign occupier whose relentless aerial bombardment of rebel-held areas has led to thousands of civilian casualties. Some accuse Moscow of applying a “scorched-earth policy” that targets hospitals, schools and residential areas more than frontlines to break the resolve of the anti-Assad insurgency.

MSNBC Host Lawrence O'Donnell Calls Out Bill O'Reilly: 'Come And Sue Me… I Dare You'

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){‘undefined’!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if(‘object’==typeof commercial_video){var a=”,o=’m.fwsitesection=’+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video[‘package’]){var c=’&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D’+commercial_video[‘package’];a+=c}e.setAttribute(‘vdb_params’,a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById(‘vidible_1’),onPlayerReadyVidible);

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell is calling out Fox News host Bill O’Reilly over legal threats made against one of the women who have accused him of sexual harassment.

An attorney for O’Reilly told the New York Times that “we are now seriously considering legal action” in response to harassment claims from Wendy Walsh, a former regular guest on “The O’Reilly Factor.”

But O’Donnell told Joy Reid on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” on Sunday that if they sue Walsh, they should sue him as well:

“I believe that Bill O’Reilly sexually harassed Wendy Walsh. I believe Bill O’Reilly is a sexual harasser. Now, according to O’Reilly’s thug lawyer, I’m sue-able right now. Go ahead. Go ahead. Come and sue me, Bill O’Reilly, I dare you.”

He predicted that O’Reilly won’t sue because “he’s actually guilty of these things” and also because he wouldn’t want to be under oath answering questions about the case.

O’Donnell also blasted Fox News as a “cesspool of sexual harassment and abuse of women.”

Skype Real-Time Voice Translation Now Supports Japanese

Skype Translator feature comes in handy if you’re trying to have a conversation with someone who speaks a different language. It supports some of the most widely spoken languages and provides users with real-time voice translation. Microsoft continues to improve this feature by adding more languages to the list. The company has now announced that the Skype real-time translation feature has support for the Japanese language.

Skype users across the globe can use this feature to make real-time voice and video calls in Japanese. This is the 10th supported language for this feature which already has support for English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Arabic, and Russian.

If the language you seek translation for isn’t included in the list above, then perhaps you should check out the list of more than 60 languages that Skype supports for real-time translations in text.

Microsoft says that developing Japanese for Skype Translator has been challenging from a technological point of view. Japanese is commonly noted as one of the most difficult languages for native English speakers to learn as it has a completely different grammatical structure and vocabulary.

To try out real-time Japanese translation or any of the other supported languages, users just have to click on the globe icon on the Skype Windows Desktop or the Skype Translator button on the Skype Preview app for Windows 10 and start chatting.

iPhone 8 Pre-Orders May Start In September But Shipments Might Take Time

Apple traditionally launches new iPhones in the fall and it’s expected to stick with that timeline this year as well. The company is expected to launch three iPhones this year including one with a 5.8 inch OLED display. A new report claims that while iPhone 8 pre-orders might open in September, they may not actually start shipping until “several weeks later.”

The report comes from longtime Apple analyst Brian White of the investment banking firm Drexel Hamilton. He writes in his research note to investors that the firm’s contact “strongly believes” that the 5.8 inch iPhone 8 will be delayed by several weeks due to challenges related to the 3D sensing technology.

Apple is therefore expected to start taking pre-orders for the handset in September but may not ship it for several weeks. The analyst mentions that Apple will be able to get the smartphone out well ahead of the lucrative holiday season.

However, this assumption is based on the information available at this point in time. There’s still a long way to go until September and there’s every possibility that the situation could improve in the coming months. If that does happen, there would be no need for Apple to delay shipments after taking pre-orders.

Another expected scenario is that the iPhone 8 might only be available in limited quantities initially with supply being gradually ramped up in the following months. None of this has been officially confirmed by Apple so take it all with a healthy dose of salt for now.

GameStop Investigates Breach Of Customer Payment Data From Website

Things aren’t going that well for GameStop. It recently announced the closure of at least 150 stores across the United States and if that wasn’t enough, the company is also investigating a possible breach of customer financial data from its website. Those who made a purchase via GameStop’s website using their bank card over the past few months should pay attention.

KrebsOnSecurity reports that two sources in the financial industry have informed it that alerts have been received from a credit card processor. It’s possible that customers’ financial data might have been breached from September 2016 till the first week of February 2017. The company’s website may have been compromised around this time.

The stolen information is likely to include credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates, and even the 3-digit security code. Even customer names and addresses are said to have been breached which should be a red flag as that’s essentially everything that’s required to make a card purchase online in most cases.

GameStop has acknowledged that it was tipped off by a third party that information related to payment cards used on its website was being sold online. It says that a leading security firm was engaged to investigate the matter that very day.

“Gamestop has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to eradicate any issue that may be identified. We regret any concern this situation may cause for our customers,” it added.

Carrie Fisher Star Wars: Episode 9 Appearance Confirmed

Carrie Fisher did a lot of work after Star Wars yet most people will know her for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise. It is without a doubt one of the most memorable on-screen characters ever created. Fisher returned to play Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and while fans would have loved to see more of her in the upcoming Star Wars movies, sadly she passed away in December last year. However, her brother has said that she will be making an appearance in Star Wars: Episode 9.

Fisher does have a role in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 8 movie and it has already been confirmed that she had completed filming all of her scenes in the movie prior to her death. Her brother Todd Fisher confirmed to the Daily News of New York that the family has given Disney the rights to use recent footage of Carrie Fisher for the final movie in this new trilogy.

She won’t be brought back in CG, though, as Lucasfilm has previously announced that it’s not going to use computer generated images of Fisher to complete her roles in any subsequent movies.

The next movie, Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi, finished filming back in July 2016. Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that Fisher will appear throughout the movie as originally intended and that no edits have been made after her passing. Star Wars Episode 8 hits the big screen on December 15th.

Google Assistant Shopping Lists Will No Longer Be Saved In Google Keep

Google Assistant makes it very easy to perform a wide variety of tasks using just voice commands. The ability to create shopping lists is one such feature. You can just tell Google Assistant the item that you want on your shopping list and it will add that to the list. Previously, the lists were stored in Google Keep but this is going to change soon. Shopping lists made via the Google Assistant will no longer be said in Google Keep starting April 10th.

A support page on Google’s website reveals that shopping lists created in Google Assistant will be moved from Google Keep to the Google Home and Express apps. This will also be true for all new lists created after the aforementioned date.

It makes more sense to store the lists in the Google Home and Express apps given that they will enable users in supported markets to easily order and track delivery of the items on their list. Those who don’t want to have their lists migrated automatically from Keep after April 10th, they should delete them manually from Keep.

After April 10th, items added to shopping lists using Google Assistant will only be available for viewing in the Express and Home apps. Tap on the list icon to bring them up.
