Apple Music For Android Gets A Design Overhaul

While Google has had no qualms with bringing over its apps and services onto iOS, the same can’t really be said for Apple who has largely kept itself out of other platforms, at least until more recent times where Apple launched Apple Music for Android as well. For Android users who felt that the app was lacking, not to worry as an update has arrived.

This is a pretty major update because Apple has basically revamped the entire design of the Apple Music app for Android, ultimately bringing it in line with what Apple Music looks like on iOS devices. It is admittedly a bit slow especially since Apple Music’s redesign was announced at WWDC last year, but better late than never, right?

The updated Apple Music will bring more or less the same features as the iOS version, where users can read lyrics to songs as they listen to music, improved navigation within the music library where you can find your downloaded songs much easier. There will be a new “For You” section, a browse section, and radio where users can tune into Beats 1 or listen to stations based on their preferences.

The update is already available via Google Play so if you haven’t downloaded the app yet, you probably should if you want to take advantage of all these new features.

Apple’s New iPads Can Be Repaired With Old iPad Air Parts

While we’re still waiting on new iPad Pro refreshes, back in March Apple announced a new-ish iPad in the form of the 9.7-inch model. This isn’t the refresh that we’re sure many iPad owners have been waiting for, especially when it is both thicker and heavier than its predecessor, but at the same time it is affordable which could help attract new customers.

Also interestingly enough for those who plan to keep their tablets around for the long haul is that the new iPad can actually be repaired using parts from the original iPad Air. This is according to the folks at iFixit who found that for the most part, the new 9.7-inch iPad is basically an update to the original iPad, which means that repairing it should not be an unfamiliar process for repair shops, plus components should already be in stock since you could repurpose parts from the original iPad Air.

However note that not every single component can be repurposed. According to iFixit’s investigation, it was found that most components should be reusable, but there are some that can’t, such as the home button + bracket, the front-facing camera, and the volume and power buttons.

They found that to a certain extent the LCD can also be reused, but not without some trade-offs. “An iPad 5 LCD will work in an iPad Air 1 (and actually give it a brightness boost). An Air 1 LCD in an iPad 5 also works, but the display was very dim (~200 nits versus an expected ~440 nits). And the left edge had weird backlight bleed.”

Amazon Will Soon Begin Refunding In-App Purchases Made By Children

Back in 2016, Amazon was found guilty of illegally billing parents for in-app purchases accidentally made by their children. Unsurprisingly Amazon decided to appeal the decision, but interestingly enough the company appears to have changed their mind and has since dropped its appeal.

What this means is that moving forwards, customers who were part of this can soon expect to have their unwanted in-app purchases refunded to them. According to the ruling back in 2016, the judge found that Amazon had failed to clearly notify parents that while the app might be free for download, it might still include in-app purchases, and that they did not provide enough notice or security measures that could have prevented these purchases.

This is also why companies such as Apple have made changes to their App Store over the years where they clearly label apps that have in-app purchases, and also why apps are no longer titled as “Free”. It has been estimated that in total from November 2011 up to May 2016 that parents might have been billed upwards of $70 million because of this.

The refund program is expected to begin “shortly” where it will be credited back to the customer’s debit/credit card, or via a paper check. This was also after Amazon had originally suggested that refunds come in the form of gift cards.

Qualcomm Wants FTC Antitrust Lawsuit Against Them Dismissed

Earlier this year it was revealed that over in the US, Qualcomm had been hit with a lawsuit by the FTC over alleged antitrust violations. The FTC’s lawsuit isn’t the first that the company has been hit with as previously they were also fined in South Korea, and as it stands Apple has a couple of lawsuits pending against them.

However over in the US, Qualcomm is now seeking that the FTC’s lawsuit against the company be dismissed. In a motion filed on Monday in the US District Court in San Jose, California, Qualcomm wrote, “The complaint does not contain any factual allegations of anticompetitive harm to Qualcomm’s rivals in the supply of modem chips.” Basically Qualcomm doesn’t think that the FTC is able to support their allegations of antitrust violations or competitive harm, and that’s why they are seeking the dismissal.

According to the FTC back when they filed the lawsuit, they claim that the patents held by Qualcomm are deemed as standard-essential patents and must be licensed to the competition under fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory terms, but it seems that Qualcomm had refused to do so which the FTC believes violates its FRAND commitments.

Whether or not the court will grant the dismissal remains to be seen, although recent reports have hinted that Qualcomm’s “abuse” of standard essential patents is the reason why Samsung’s Exynos chipsets aren’t found in non-Samsung devices.

Another year, another Samsung Galaxy flagship. Which means another chance for DisplayMate to review the Galaxy S8‘s screen and rank it among others in the market. Twitter Blasts Kendall Jenner's Cringeworthy Pepsi Commercial

God forgives, but Twitter doesn’t.

A new, cringeworthy Pepsi ad starring Kendall Jenner is making its rounds across the internet, and Twitter users are tearing it to shreds. The commercial, titled “Live for Now Moments Anthem,” co-opted visuals from the numerous protests and marches across the nation in an astoundingly tone-deaf fashion.

To make matters worse, the commercial is trending on the 49th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.

“Capturing the spirit and actions of those people that jump in to every moment and featuring multiple lives, stories and emotional connections that show passion, joy, unbound and uninhibited moments,” the YouTube description for the woeful ad reads. “No matter the occasion, big or small, these are the moments that make us feel alive.”

Although the negative backlash continues, Pepsi told Adweek in a statement: “This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.”

In a strange way, Pepsi did just that — people from all different walks of life came together to rip the commercial on Twitter.
