New Alien: Covenant Footage Teases the Grim Fate of Noomi Rapace's Prometheus Character

We’ve known for a while that Noomi Rapace would be reprising her role as Prometheus’ Liz Shaw in Covenant—but now a rather oblique piece of viral marketing seems to have dropped a big hint about her appearance in the film.

What's the Best VPN Service?

Last week, Congress voted to give internet service providers permission to sell your private browsing data. Huge dick move! The one good thing to come out of it though was a wave of interest in VPN services, which people should probably be using regardless. The problem? There are a lot of them out there, and it can be…

Equal Pay Day Is a Good Reminder of How Much It Still Sucks to Be a Woman in Tech

Today is Equal Pay Day, which is so chosen because it marks, on average, how much longer a woman would have to work to make the same as a man did during the previous year. Women across the country are… well, not quite “celebrating,” but marking the day with events and protests, and probably more than a few private…

The Addams Family LP Is Creepy and Kooky

When I was growing up in the ’80s, I stayed home by myself pretty much all summer. This was in the days before cable and Netflix so you watched what was on TV and were glad for it. Dallas, Texas had a local network that came on channel 11 we could pick up out in the sticks where we lived and all it showed all-day was reruns of old TV shows. I liked I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, and Gilligan’s Island quite a bit.

I also watched my share of The Munsters and The Addams Family, which both gave me the creeps. Fans of The Addams Family can grab some music from the show on a cool ThinkGeek Exclusive vinyl LP.

The record includes 13 songs by composer Vic Mizzy, including the classic theme song. I had no idea there were other songs besides that one. It’s made from a cool black-and-white vinyl, which is perfect since the show was shot in black-and-white too. The Addams Family collectible LP is $29.99 and available now.

Apple Not Discontinuing Mac Mini

It has been a while since Apple talked about the Mac mini. The company has been quiet about this product for so long that many had started thinking that perhaps Apple was going to discontinue it. However, that’s not going to be the case. Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller has confirmed today that the Mac mini remains an “important” product for the company which essentially means that Apple isn’t going to discontinue it anytime soon.

He revealed this in a press briefing earlier today in which more details were also revealed about the company’s plans for the Mac Pro and iMac. Calling the Mac mini an important product in Apple’s lineup, he said that Apple wasn’t bringing it up “because it’s more of a mix of consumer with some pro use.”

He added that the Mac mini will remain a product in Apple’s lineup but the company has nothing more to say about this product today. Apple last refreshed the Mac mini back in 2014 and it remains the cheapest Mac in its lineup.

Schiller’s comments today suggest that the company is open to the idea of refreshing the Mac mini at some point down the line. However, there’s no news right now on what the company is planning on doing next with this product. If it’s going to get a major overhaul of whether Apple is only going to refresh the specs.

We’ll have to wait to find out for sure. Apple has confirmed today that an entirely new Mac Pro will be out next year and that it’s going to launch iMac configurations aimed at pro consumers later this year.

August Home announced today that it has joined the Z-Wave Alliance, which only means one thing: Z-Wave home automation accessories are on the way. Instead, the Smart … Continue reading

Legislator Calls Out Her 'White Male' Colleagues For Skipping Speeches By Women Of Color

On Monday, Minnesota state Rep. Ilhan Omar (D) spoke out against a public safety bill, arguing that its increase in penalties for protesters who block major roads would weaken civil rights and could have blocked historic demonstrations throughout history.

Melissa Hortman (D), the minority leader in the state House, was disappointed that more of her colleagues weren’t in the chamber to hear this speech and others that had been delivered by women opposed to the bill. So she moved to make them come back.

“I hate to break up the 100 percent white male card game in the retiring room, but I think this is an important debate,” she said.

That comment deeply offended some of the white men in the chamber.

“I’m a white male,” state Rep. Bob Dettmer (R) said. “I respect everybody. But I really believe the comments that were made by the minority leader were really not appropriate. Minority leader, would you apologize to the body?”

I’m really tired of watching women of color, in particular, being ignored. So, I’m not sorry.
Minnesota House Minority Leader Rep. Melissa Hortman (D)

Hortman refused to apologize, the Minneapolis City Pages reported.

“I have no intention of apologizing,” she said. “I am so tired of watching Rep. Susan Allen give an amazing speech, Rep. Peggy Flanagan give an amazing speech, watching Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn give an amazing speech, Rep. Rena Moran give the most heartfelt, incredible speech I’ve heard on this House floor, as long as I can remember, watching Rep. Ilhan Omar give an amazing speech … and looking around, to see, where are my colleagues?”

“And I went in the retiring room, and I saw where a bunch of my colleagues were,” she added. “And I’m really tired of watching women of color, in particular, being ignored. So, I’m not sorry.”

State Rep. Greg Davids (R) told the Post-Bulletin, a publication in southeastern Minnesota, that he was “greatly offended” by Hortman’s comment and wants her to resign, arguing that she “created a very hostile working environment.”

Omar, elected in November, is the first Somali-American legislator in the nation. She was born in Somalia and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States at the age of 12.
