Donald Trump Reportedly Plans To Withdraw From Paris Climate Deal

President Donald Trump plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change, multiple outlets reported Wednesday. This would make the United States one of just three countries outside the historic pact to reduce planet-warming emissions.

Trump pledged during his campaign to “cancel” the deal, but delayed a decision for months amid a split in the administration on the issue. But in recent weeks, the camp opposing the accord apparently convinced the president to abandon it ― despite few political advantages and harsh economic and diplomatic consequences.

Under the terms of the deal, the U.S. cannot officially withdraw until November 2019. But even an announcement that the country is looking to leave the deal shows that the White House has no plans to meet earlier targets for slashing greenhouse gas emissions.

That much was already clear. In March, Trump ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to review the Clean Power Plan ― a sweeping regulation passed by former President Barack Obama to limit emissions from the utility sector, by far the country’s biggest emitter. The policy was already stayed by the Supreme Court in February 2016 as a result of a lawsuit filed by former Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, who is now Trump’s head of the EPA. Without the Clean Power Plan, the U.S. wouldn’t even come close to meeting its goals laid out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Trump vowed to jumpstart the U.S. economy by eliminating environmental regulations he blamed for holding back companies. In particular, he positioned himself as a staunch advocate for fossil fuels, nixing climate change funding from his proposed budget and scrapping rules that discourage pollution and boost renewable energy. But, somewhat ironically, major oil, gas and coal companies ― along with a plethora of other big corporations ― urged Trump to keep the U.S. in the Paris Agreement.

Environmental groups have little legal recourse given that the Obama administration bypassed the Senate to ratify the deal, arguing it did not constitute a treaty. But the Trump administration is still required to regulate carbon dioxide emissions as a public health threat under a 2007 Supreme Court ruling. How it plans to fulfill that legal responsibility that is unclear.

Quitting the Paris Agreement strikes a major diplomatic blow to the U.S. Only war-torn Syria and Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, are not included in the accord. Retreating from the agreement, which the U.S. took a lead role in brokering, brands the nation as a “rogue country” and a “climate pariah,” diplomats said. Without a seat at the table, the U.S. loses leverage over policy action on global warming, and cedes influence to rival superpower China, which has vowed to support poorer countries’ efforts to adapt to climate change.

“Who cares?” Myron Ebell, a top climate change denier who led Trump’s EPA transition team, told HuffPost on Tuesday ahead of the announcement. “If countries are moving in the wrong direction, I don’t think the leader of that movement has much to look forward to. It seems to me that President Trump has a chance to not only turn the direction of the country around but the direction of the world around. Good luck to China.”

Yet few credible, peer-reviewed scientists believe manmade climate change isn’t a major problem, and a growing number of investors are already pouring money into transforming the energy economy.

The economic effects of leaving the Paris Agreement would likely be devastating. The U.S. is poised to lose access to fast-growing clean energy markets as Europe, India and China gain major footholds in an industry estimated to be worth $6 trillion by 2030. Countries that tax emissions could now put a tariff on American-made imports, complicating Trump’s plans to reclaim the U.S. mantle as a top manufacturing hub.

“It’s very clear that the energy economy is heading in a direction that, if you don’t engage with climate change, you’re going to miss out on a large number of jobs that have already emerged,” David Waskow, director of the World Resource Institute’s international climate program, told HuffPost before the announcement. “Withdrawing and retreating would have very negative implications for the U.S. economically.”

It’s unclear what Trump gains politically from the withdrawal. The deal had overwhelming support. Sixty-one percent of Americans said the country should remain in the deal, while just 17 percent support withdrawing and 21 percent aren’t sure, according to a HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted earlier this month. And more than 400 U.S. cities, 37 states, 800 universities and nearly half of all Fortune 500 companies have already set their own clean energy and emissions targets.

Nest Cam IQ With 4K Sensor Now Official

It was reported last week that Nest was gearing up to launch a new indoor camera which would have a 4K sensor. The company has now officially unveiled this product. It’s called the Nest Cam IQ. It has a 4K sensor and a couple of new features that set it apart from Nest’s existing indoor security camera. The new features do come at a price, though, which is why it’s more expensive.

The Nest Cam IQ features an 8 megapixel 4K camera but that doesn’t mean it actually streams video in 4K. It actually uses the sensor to provide enhanced zooming functionality that it calls Supersight.

Those additional pixels are used to power the clear 1080p zooming feature. Supersight is capable of automatically detecting movement and zooming in, it can follow objects as they shift around.

Users can view the live video feed with a full HD picture-in-picture zoom window. The Nest Cam IQ has support for 12x digital zoom as well as High Dynamic Range. A 130 degree field of view means that it provides a wider image of the room.

Advanced objection recognition capability is onboard as well. The camera is capable of telling the difference between a human and an object. It can thus generate a special live feed when it detects people and zooms in on their faces.

This functionality is free but the “familiar face” feature costs extra. This feature pushes alerts to the user with zoomed videos if a stranger walks in front of the camera. This requires a Nest Aware subscription which starts at $10 per month.

The Nest Cam IQ can be pre-ordered starting today in the United States. It will be released by the end of next month. Nest is selling its new camera for $299.

BlackBerry KEYOne Release Takes Place In The U.S.

We started hearing a lot of rumors about the BlackBerry Mercury late last year. This TCL-made handset is called the BlackBerry KEYOne. It may look like a conventional BlackBerry device with its full QWERTY keyboard but since the Canadian company is no longer making devices, it’s actually made by TCL under the BB brand. Those who have been waiting to pick one up in the United States will be delighted to know that the BlackBerry KEYOne release has now taken place in the country.

The handset was actually supposed to release a bit earlier in the country but the company decided to delay the release. It’s now following through with the release, finally, for prospective customers in the United States.

The BlackBerry KEYOne features a 4.5 inch Full HD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 825 processor coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. It also features a 12 megapixel rear and 8 megapixel front camera as well as a 3,505mAh battery. The device is powered by Android 7.1 Nougat.

It does have BlackBerry’s signature full QWERTY keyboard which has a few tricks up its sleeve. There’s a fingerprint sensor embedded below the space key while each of the keys can be programmed as a hot key for quickly launching apps.

The BlackBerry KEYOne is now available for purchase in the United States from Amazon and Best Buy. It’s available unlocked and off contract for $549.99.

Snapdragon 835 PCs Being Developed By HP, ASUS, And Lenovo

Microsoft confirmed late last year that it was bringing Windows desktop apps to mobile ARM processors. The company was making another attempt at bringing over the Windows experiences to devices powered by ARM processors, the kind of chips that you’d find in a smartphone. It confirmed back then that Windows 10 on ARM was made possible due to a partnership with Qualcomm so it’s not surprising to hear that the first PCs that are a result of this partnership are going to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor.

At Computex 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan today, Microsoft confirmed the partners that will be making the initial batch of Windows 10 ARM-powered PCs. It confirmed that HP, ASUS, and Lenovo are the three OEMs that are going to be developing these “mobile PCs.”

On the software side, Windows 10 will be able to emulate conventional desktop applications so that users can get a proper PC experience. Microsoft has made this happen by building an emulator directly into the operating system. These mobile PCs will be able to run powerful x86 win32 apps like Photoshop.

Despite confirming the three OEMS that have decided to take a chance on this, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed as yet when their mobile PCs are going to arrive. It does say that these machines will provide better battery life and LTE connectivity.

Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf previously said that ARM-powered Windows 10 PCs are not going to be released before the fourth quarter of this year.

Felicity” stars Keri Russell and Scott Speedman reunited twice on Tuesday but, alas, it wasn’t to revive their characters’ romance in the 1998-2002 drama.

Russell was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Speedman joined his friend at the festivities. Later, they appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to discuss the old days and the possibility of new times.

Kimmel asked the pair if a Netflix-style reunion à la “Gilmore Girls” could happen.

“I really don’t think so,” Speedman responded. “I would do it.”

Then in a fun jab at Russell’s FX spy series “The Americans,” he said, “Some people are on high-class shows. I’ll do it in a heartbeat. I’ll be on ‘Lifetime’ in no time.”

Russell, whose character, Felicity Porter, chased her crush, Speedman’s Ben Covington, cross-country to college, has maintained an offscreen friendship with Speedman ever since.

She told a funny anecdote about Speedman repeatedly confusing the star-unveiling with the traditional Hollywood practice of showbiz greats placing their hands in concrete at the Chinese Theatre. Finally, she said, “Fuck you, Scott.”

We’re glad those two get along. Just look at ’em below. So ripe for an official onscreen reunion. Sigh…
